G116: White Sox 5, Red Sox 3

Red Sox - 000 000 030 - 3 5 0
White Sox - 001 020 11x - 5 7 0
Pedroia's three-run home run brought the Sox to within one run with one out in the eighth. Before FY swung, no Boston runners had advanced past second base.

But then Ortiz grounded out (and merely jogged down the line, not that the Boston sportswriters noticed or, if they did, thought it worthy of comment), Youkilis walked on four pitches, and Lowell (ahead on the count 3-1) fouled out to the catcher.

Delcarmen allowed a solo home run to Quentin in the bottom half to make the task a bit tougher. In the ninth, Bay flied to deep right-center, Lowrie was hit by a pitch, Varitek was allowed to bat and flew out to shallowish center, and pinch-hitter Casey (who should have hit for Tek) grounded to shortstop on an oops check swing.

***

Jon Lester (3.14, 142 ERA+) / Mark Buehrle (4.07, 109 ERA+)

The last time the Red Sox played in US Cellular Field (late last August), they scored at least 10 runs in each of the four games (11-3, 10-1, 14-2, 11-1), sweeping the White Sox by a combined score of 46-7. As I wrote at the time, it:
was the first time in major league history that a road team has swept a four-game series with 10 or more runs scored in each game.

Also, it has been 85 years since an American League team had scored 10+ in each game of a four-game series (the other three times: St. Louis Browns 1920, St. Louis Browns 1922, Colorado Rockies 1996).
X-rays of Kevin Youkilis's right hand were negative and he may return to the lineup tonight.

Jason Bay -- 11-for-26 (.423) since the trade with at least one hit in all six games -- is settled in. ... Sean McAdam, ProJo:
According to research by the Elias Sports Bureau, the last midseason acquisition to begin his Red Sox career with a hitting streak of at least six games was third baseman George Kell, who hit in 10 straight after coming over from Detroit in June of 1952.
Michael Silverman (Herald) looks at the remaining schedules of the three AL East contenders.
          Home Games Games v 1st-
or 2nd-place teams

Red Sox: 25 of 47 19 of 47
Rays: 23 of 48 19 of 47
Yankees: 19 of 47 25 of 47
Also: Tampa Bay lost last night, so they lost a bit of their lead to Boston (2.5 GB) and New York (5.5 GB). Rays/Mariners and Yankees/Angels, both at 10 PM

Red Sox minor league pitcher Victor De La Cruz (Dominican Summer League) was immediately suspended 50 games after testing positive for the steroid Stanozolol.

lets see what the yanks can do with their AAA rotation this weekend.

lester for 11, yes please.

nixon33 said...

about a week ago mike and the maddog breaking down numbers and records of what teams records for the remainder of the season would be to have "enough" wins to make it to the postseason. i think the goal number was 92 wins or so. i think that mean the yanks had to go something like 42-19 (im a little fuzzy on the numbers so dont kill me for it). i do remember that the loss column was around 19...
theres no way they lose only 19 games the rest of the way.
redsock has been right this whole time about them not making the post season. its sad it took maddog russo to tell me so.

I'm back. Got the internet back, and we learned the car is not totaled. Let's just say I hate rental car companies from the very fiber of my being. Because a large number of people within the 18-25 age group are stupid and did stupid shit with rental cars, people aged 21-25 have to pay an underage surcharge - and people under 21 (I'm 20 for another six months), cannot drive at all.

So I'm going along, minding my own business last Thursday, have a one-ton pickup truck run a red light and smash into the side of the car, and a week later I learn it is me who is the one who has to go a month without driving. Through no fault of my own.

So, the moral of the story is, if you're under 21, or if you don't have a major credit card - don't have a crash. Just, don't. Is it your fault? Doesn't matter.

Wow, that sucks.

Good: Weekend series with the White Sox mean I can watch on mute at work and am not stuck at home with the Hawk on TV during weeknights.

Bad: Short-staffed at work. Hard to say how much I'll be able to watch tonight.

tim said...

Good: No exams sunday or monday.
Bad: Exams today and tomorrow (and tuesday) so no games for me.
Ugly: No motivation to study.
Sloppy: After tomorrow's exam - the final summer kegger, entitled "Fuck 3B". The softball league's putting it on with the hopes of hitting 300 kegs for the summer. (3B is the school term I'm in...part B of 3rd year)

Anyhoo, yeah I hear what you're saying ish. Basically anyone under 25 gets fucked before they even get behind a wheel of a car. And if you get in an accident...look out. I can tell you that first hand. It sucks.

Ish, my condolences on being caught in the young driver gulch. (At least it's a time-limited stereotype, so you can look forward to shedding it soon.)

But the "Legendary Assholes" link was pretty good!

The writer is a bit careless with the facts, though. The story about Comiskey promising a pitcher $$$ for 30 wins (it was Eddie Cicotte) and then benching him is fiction.

A little night musing said...

redsock: That kind of thing is why I only gave it a "pretty good".

Pretty good beats out some (most) of the rot I've read recently. Sad.

It's from Cracked, so I didn't really take everything they said as facts. I'd heard some of the other things before though, so I knew that it was at least part-truth. Humorous, at least, I thought.

I think I read some speculation (though I don't remember where) that rising gas prices will lead to a re-urbanization of the US for exactly this reason.

Shit, it's already the case that some wealthy people have their vacation home in the downtown areas.

I've read that too. But it can only happen if people can afford housing in cities, and if there are jobs. Since the cities have been de-industrialized, I'm not sure how that would work.

I don't really know how much they're known outside Israel, but I'm a very active pursuer of the Middle Eastern scene here in NYC. They've performed here more than once. They're pretty well known in that community (as a group and as individual musicians.)

for the longest time i've been looking to see live sitar music, endless searches and nothing comes up. do you know of regular spots where this sort of entertainment occurs?

amen, its all good in theory. but i know more and more people moving away from the city because its so expensive. hell, im going to be one of them soon. car expenses and gas $$ will be a piece of piss compared to the rent i pay, not to mention the other expenses they bend you over for around here..

A little night musing said...

Nix, there used to be a restaurant on E6th Street that had live sitar music some nights, but it's been years and I don't know if they still do. I'm moderately sure that there is live Indian music somewhere in the city (one hears things).

nixon33 said...

ALNM, i'll poke my head around E6th to see if its still a-heppenin'.

oh im sure there's live indian music going on, i just can't find it! sometimes thats almost a disadvantage to living in NY. you know EVERYTHING is here, its how to go about looking for it. and sometimes it can be very frustration.

Jere said...

Actually, if you can't tell which place has the live music, just ask the dudes out on the sidewalk, they're always out there trying to get you to choose their place. In fact, I bet if you asked, the guy would be like "Yeah, sure we have music!" and then go run out and find a sitar and bring it back and start playing while you eat... so you'd have that at the very least....

As far as actual Indian/sitar clubs, I have no idea.

nixon33 said...

ha, thanks jere. yeah looking for more of a small concert setting, if you will.

Did I mis-hear, or did Heidi ask Nick Swisher how it feels to be in his "first pennant race"?

Jere said...

Macha just said he once told Swisher he'd give him $100 if he hit a ball over the left-center field fence, and he did. So I Googled it to see if this was a known story, and I found this similar story from 9/06:

"Swisher has more homers (33) than doubles (23) this year, and Macha told him earlier in the week he'd give him $50 for every double he hits the rest of the season. "I'm trying to get him to hit the ball to the opposite-field gap," Macha said. "Since then he's hit two doubles. I called Milton (Bradley) over in the clubhouse and said, 'I want you to be my witness,' and I gave Swisher $100." "

Did Ken "mis-remember" or was he regularly handing out bills?

Do you mean two pitchers who have thrown no-hitters? Or two pitches who throw no-hitters?

I'm sure the first thing is yes, the second? Not sure. I know of a pitcher who's thrown a no-hitter and lost...

No duel-no-no's tonight.

Yes. Once.

Fred Toney (Reds) Jim Vaughn (Cubs)
Weeghman Park (later Wrigley field)

There was a 10th inning hit & run
details (scroll)

allan said...

ofer is correct!

A Conformer said...

Per Wikipedia:

On May 2, 1917, a game between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds reached the end of nine innings in a hitless scoreless tie, the only time in baseball history that neither team has had a hit in regulation. Both Hippo Vaughn of the Cubs and Fred Toney of the Reds continued pitching into the tenth inning. Vaughn lost his no-hitter in the top of the tenth, as the Reds got two hits and scored the winning run. Toney retired the side in the bottom of the tenth and recorded a ten-inning no-hitter. This game was long considered a "double no-hitter," but Vaughn is no longer credited with a no-hitter under the current rules.

Rob said...

Oh I bet.

Wow I got messed up with that liner to Lowrie. Looked like it was way over his head then he casually jumped up and caught it.

The jedi controls his emotions, remains steady, and uses the force.

JCal76 said...

Yeah, meant both throw a no hitter in the same game.

Actually, both starters tonight each have one.

Rob said...

It would have been a HUGE stretch for either of these teams to have been no-hit tonight.

JCal76 said...

Papi's numbers post Manny are horrible. I figured his walks would go way up but his K's are what's gone up.

Granted he's still getting his timing back...

Lau's method. I actually didn't know A-Rod benefitted from it. Screw it!

Jere said...

understandable, ish

Jere said...

Lester pitching well enough to have people say "he pitched well enough to win" at the end of the game.

That's almost as bad as ARods "Pete Rose Text hitting method". (I'd put the link here but I'm not smart)

Could it be they actually fell for the big swing and posturing by the hitter, and thought it was gonna be deeper.

Gah. Bermuda Triangle in the outfield.

Lester is pitching well. Not crazy awesome, but he's only allowed one run - it's up to the bats now. Although now Lester's now in a jam and he's got to put his Houdini costume on.

Benjamin said...

When I said "runs", I meant for us.

nixon33 said...

he fucking stopped at third, even!!!

Jere said...

yeah but Remy, if Pedroia keeps running at the runner... or if Lowrie catches it and throws home... we had a chance, I htink

Rob said...

Jere, I agree. They were running after Pierzynski while Cabrera broke for home, and no throw. They didn't even look.

Remy: "It's hard to fault the Red Sox."

Pierzynski started for second, Cabrera stopped - Pedroia had to get rid of the ball either to go after Pierzynski or hold onto it and deal with second and third. The second Pedroia threw over to Lowrie, Cabrera started home.

Didn't look like Lowrie had a chance of getting O-Cab anyways.

Here comes the Chicago bullpen. Can we greet them with some bats?

allan said...

Okay, make it moot, boys. 5 runs!

JCal76 said...

Something that will never happen to Pedroia again.

Rob said...

I wasn't really expecting Cabrera to come home so quickly. AJ was so caught in the basepaths that Pedroia couldn't just hold the ball.

But if he did, the inning would have continued without the run scoring and runners on second and third. We'd still be pissed about it, I'm sure.

nixon33 said...

i dont give a fuck what remy says, even run the ball back in, we cant afford another run there the way our shit lineup is hitting.

allan said...

Manny, are you watching that Pedroia play??????

allan said...

Now pitching: Don't ask, Dotel.

Jere said...

as soon as Lowrie catches it, Cab is only a few feet off of third.

and FY: he threw when he thought the runner was going to 2nd, knowing the runner at 3rd had stopped. Unfortunately, the instant he threw, both things changed--runner stopped between 1st and 2nd, and OCab bolted for home. So had he held it and kept running, they would've got the guy btwn 1st and second since he stopped heading toward second right at that moment. I guess run still might have scored--BUT, if he's still holding it, he SEES OCab heading home, and throws there.

allan said...

This cannot be squandered.
