Red Sox - 000 001 410 - 6 14 1Dice did not pitch quite as well as his line might suggest (8-4-1-3-4, 106), but his infield mates turned four double plays behind him to limit any possible damage.
White Sox - 000 010 001 - 2 5 0
Matsuzaka retired the side in order only twice -- in the sixth and seventh innings. Yet he never faced more than five batters in an inning -- and that happened only once.
The big bat belonged to David Ortiz, who went 3-for-5, with two singles, a double, a run scored and three RBI. His bases-loaded (and bases-clearing) double to deep left-center was the key blow of the night as it increased Boston's lead from 2-1 to 5-1.
Jacoby Ellsbury was 3-for-4, with two singles and a home run; J.D. Drew walked three times from the leadoff spot; and Dustin Pedroia singled twice, giving him a hit in 28 consecutive road games. Kevin Youkilis and Mike Lowell also singled twice.
The Rays beat the Mariners 8-7 in 11 innings. The Angels scored eight runs in the eighth inning to pound the Yankees 11-4. We stay 3.5 GB, New York drops to 7.5 GB.
***
Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.04, 146 ERA+) / Jose Contreras (4.60, 97 ERA+)
Will Mike Lowell (.202/.265/.277 since July 1 and clearly playing hurt) get a day off?
Will Terry Francona move Jason Bay (.400/.471/.633 in a Red Sox uniform) up in the lineup?
Will Dustin Pedroia hit safely in his 28th straight road game?
Will the Red Sox find their bats and pound Contreras (just off the DL after right elbow tendinitis) as they did in their last meeting (7.1-10-10-3-2, including a Julio Lugo grand slam)?
Also: Yankees/Angels at 3:45 PM and Rays/Mariners at 10 PM.

I rule.
I was going to make a comment on seeing Dave Roberts at bat, but I wanted to let someone else get 201...
:)
Roberts gets a double. Nice baserunning.
Allan
You may remember last year someone e-mailed you after seeing a video about Cathy on you-tube and getting linked back to you, probably thru WMTC since Laura posted the video. You forwarded it to me. I think I told you it turned out to be one of Cat's very best friends from school days and later, whom she hadn't seen in 10 years or so following a big spat.
They reconnected and mended old wounds and a few weeks ago Cathy went to her place in Rock Hill, SC for the weekend. Friday she drove up from her home, about 3 hours away, to hang out in the hospital room and give me a break for a while. She's been here ever since and is sitting here in the room with me right now. Tonight she insisted I get out while she stayed here, so I went to a Warthogs game with a couple of friends. When I got back and went to pull up JoS to check on the night's action, I was telling her about our community and she said "is that the people who connected me to you?" I had forgoten that detail. When I confirmed it was, she said to thank you profusely.
Beast friends for 20 odd years, living 3 hours apart, and it took an internationally populated blog site to bring them back together.
Strange world, eh?
Thanks for your part in it.
Maybe I should have e-mailed this just to you, but I thought the rest of the gang would enjoy it.
So cool!
Thanks for letting me know.
Crazy thing, this internet.
Cool story, So
Got back from a wedding. Looks like we won, MFYs lost, and FKRs are losing. Good job.
Cool story, Sosock. There are some strange connections being made via the internet indeed.
I managed to locate my first boyfriend (from about 35 years prior), quite by accident, a few years ago. Turns out he didn't have long to live :( But I managed to get a message to him before he died, and it was a bittersweet time. (Also wonderful to find out that he was still the same person I knew all those years ago, still doing the same great stuff.)
Going to extra innings in the LAD/SF game.
SF's one run so far was pretty much Dave Roberts baserunning all the way. It was pretty to see.
Roberts just got another double-through-baserunning.
Huh. Dave Roberts scores the second run. On baserunning sillz. Man.
Seattle ties it with 2 in the eighth. We go to the ninth, TB 7, Sea 7.

You *never* have to apologize for animal love here! Just because I'm allergic to cats doesn't mean I don't understand how much you love them. My dogs aren't "like" my babies - they ARE my babies. Allan and I both totally get it.
Yeah, I knew that, and I knew it was a dumb comment to make soon after making it (hence, my later comment about being intoxicated and not making sense!). Thanks so much for your support. It was really sort of strange (in a good way) that when we got home and I went to the game and JOS, I realized that I had a community here that would understand my reasons for being upset and for the celebration, even though it had nothing to do with baseball.
As SoSock's story even better illustrates, the Internet is a magical thing...but only because of the human beings using it.
Sosock, what a great story! Wonderful for both those women. Got me all choked up.
