G118: White Sox 6, Red Sox 5

Red Sox - 300 002 000 - 5 7 2
White Sox - 014 010 00x - 6 9 2
I wasn't able to watch much of this one, but after Mike Lowell's three-run home run in the first, there wasn't much to see.

Buchholz lasted only three innings (3-7-5-2-4, 74). Down by one run, Boston loaded the bases in the seventh on three consecutive walks, but Dotel came in to get Lowell to hit into a double play and end the potential rally.

Los Angeles capped their first sweep of New York at home in 13 years with a 4-3 walk-off win (Chone Figgins's single off Mariano Rivera scored Howie Kendrick). Tampa beat Seattle 11-3 for their 71st win, a franchise record.

The Red Sox are 4.5 GB the Rays, while the Yankees fell to 8.5 GB.

***

Clay Buchholz (5.94, 75 ERA+) / Gavin Floyd (3.66, 122 ERA+)

Buchholz has a 6.59 ERA in his five starts since being recalled from Pawtucket. ... Last Tuesday, Floyd went only four innings against the Tigers, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks.

Boston has been either 3 GB or 3.5 GB for the last nine days. Since July 30, the Sox and Rays have mirrored each other almost identically:
Rays - WxWWWLWWLWW
Red Sox - LxWWWLWWxLW
Tampa Bay has won 70 games this year -- tying a franchise record set in 2004. They have 46 chances to set a new record. ... Roughly halfway through a soft early August schedule -- Cleveland, Seattle, Oakland, Texas -- the Rays are 4-2.

Yankees/Angels at 3:30 PM and Rays/Mariners at 4 PM

***

This date in baseball history:
1904 - Jack Chesbro [Highlanders] is knocked out by the White Sox after pitching 30 complete games in a row.

1944 - Red Barrett of the Boston Braves throws only 58 pitches and shuts out the Cincinnati Reds 2-0. This is the major-league record for fewest pitches in a nine-inning game. The game takes one hour, 15 minutes, the shortest night game ever.

1971 - Sixteen baseball researchers at Cooperstown form the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), with founder Robert Davids as president.

1978 - The Red Sox trip the Indians, 6-5, in 13 innings as Butch Hobson scores the tying run on a bizarre play: He lofts a pop fly behind second base and races around to 2B as 2B Duane Kuiper loses the ball in the sun. Kuiper picks up the ball but bumps into 1B Andre Thornton and the ball rolls towards first base and C Bo Diaz. With Hobson motoring towards 3B, Diaz overthrows the base. Hobson, having slid into the third, picks himself up and races home. The throw from the outfield is in time to Diaz, but he can't get the ball out of his glove and a sliding Hobson is home free. A George Scott double and Rick Burleson single then wins the game. [box]

1999 - The Red Sox defeat the Royals, 9-6, as Boston P Tim Wakefield ties a major league record by striking out four batters in the 9th inning. [box]

Bugger.

Well, at least Boston is in better shape in that regard than Chicago, with Contreras' Achilles.

nixon33 said...

what have youk and wake been doing together????

this lineup i like a little more than the others (aside the fact that youk isnt in it and cora). i like drew behind papi, but as i say that, the numbers 0-4 jump into my head. hope i didnt jinx ya there JD.

I CANT BELIEVE THOSE "NEVER SAY DIE" RAYS.

Rob said...

I bet they were pole dancing.

nixon33 said...

HH needs a good start PLEASE

laura k said...

I love Pee Wee, but this "road game hit streak" thing is bogus. Streaks are streaks. There are no home streaks and away streaks. He's just hitting a ton.

laura k said...

In other news, the Rays are incredible. If (when?) they win the division, it will be well deserved.

I think we're looking at the wild card now, and the Yankees are looking at nothing. I can live with it. I'll be happy for Tampa.

Seriously, I will.

Rob said...

DONG!

nixon33 said...

holy shit i didnt think it had a chance, the way the guy was tracking it!
YEAH!

laura k said...

DOCTOR DONG!!! Mikey's back :)

Rob said...

I agree with ya, L. FY doesn't think to himself at Fenway, eh, I don't need to hit here.

allan said...

Busy with work -- and the team decides to start hitting right out of the gate. Pfft.

Shut 'em down, Laptop!

Zenslinger said...

Go go Mike Lowell!

(All right, I'm a little late).

nixon33 said...

i-girl. i'm with you. they do deserve SOMETHING. they've played great baseball all year.

andy said...

Apparently Youk is going for a better contract. Or perhaps he wants to be traded.

HH needs to be the new wakefield now. Just stop sucking Clay. Just stop it.

I hate when Cora plays.

Rob said...

Wow, that was a cool catch!

Why is Ellsbury such a sexual dynamo?

nixon33 said...

The only thing wrong with the radio broadcast is I can't see LBJ!!

HAHA J-GIRL

Rob said...

Wouldn't you think it'd be weird to play against a team you used to play for, at their home ballpark, and your picture and name are on their wall?

The picture of Frank Thomas reminds me of that. I wonder how he feels about that when he comes to Chicago in an Oakland uniform.

Rob said...

I can't decide if I like Heidi's newly styled hair or if I think it's just a mess.

I think it's a mess.

Benjamin said...

Hooray for TBS's national broadcasts.

Stop making fun of |aura.

Rob said...

HH is weird.

Throwing over to first when the guy's standing on the base.

nixon33 said...

ish, the windy city making heidi look like a wild one.

Benjamin said...

Throw strikes, asshole.

nixon33 said...

ok boy, here comes the "big inning"?

laura k said...

thanks fil and mixon.

Rob said...

Ugh. National Weather Service cut-ins for severe thunderstorms. I don't like living in a big county. You get a thunderstorm 30-40 miles north of here and they cut in to the game.

laura k said...

Remember we were all going to move to Chile so we'd be in the same time zone.

Benjamin said...

Thanks, Ramirez.

A little night musing said...

The SBN guys can't get over that last pitch.

Benjamin said...

44 pitches through two, but at least only one run.

Rob said...

Remember we were all going to move to Chile so we'd be in the same time zone.

China also uses the same time zone throughout the whole country.

The part that doesn't make sense is, China's wider than the US and Canada. Communist thing.

Rob said...

HAHAHAHAHA Tool.

Benjamin said...

You suck, Pierzynski.

Benjamin said...

Chicago broadcasters making excuses.

Tony said...

Afternoon, everybody. Just had some McDonald's, and it's sitting like a lead weight in my stomach. I always tell myself I'm going to stop eating there, and myself never listens.

How has Clay looked so far today?

Benjamin said...

Fuck.

laura k said...

crap

laura k said...

What's the attraction, Tony? I find McD's incredibly easy to avoid.

Tony said...

Oh, Christ. Well, that answered my question.

Tony said...

l-girl...probably just weakness. I grew up eating fast food (accounting for my pudgy adolescence), and even now that I'm older and know to stay away from that crap, sometimes the temptation is too great. Besides, hot McDonald's fries taste great.

laura k said...

Looks like we'll see Rocco Baldelli this season after all. Carl Crawford on the DL, they activiated the second coming of Joe DiMaggio.

Benjamin said...

Fuck you, HH.

Tony said...

Fuck me...Clay gets to 0-2 on Dye and then gives up a base hit. Story of his season.

I really hope his problems are physical and not psychological; a hitch in motion is correctable. Mind troubles are much, much harder.

laura k said...

Tony, if you give it up entirely for a decent amount of time, you might find it makes you sick when you eat it again.

FUCKING THOME

Benjamin said...

Aardvark warming.

Tony said...

And RIGHT as I post that, a 2-run bomb. I hate to say it, but this is a lost season for him. At least Hughes had the decency to get hurt and stay hurt. Running Clay out every fifth day is more or less guaranteed loss territory now.

nixon33 said...

sorry, but clay suchhz

Tony said...

l-girl, it does make me sick occasionally. But then, so does pizza, and Lord knows I can't give that up. It's my favorite food.

At least I eat fast food much, much less regularly now than even 3 or 4 years ago. I don't know how much healthier I am, but I'm sure I'm healthier now than before.

laura k said...

or should I say

FUCKING HH

Tony said...

Get him the fuck out of there, Tito. Konerko's 3/4 of the way to being cooked and he just got a hit.

A little night musing said...

Angels being angelic.

laura k said...

well, less is good. i guess i just don't understand it. there are plenty of things in my life i'd have trouble giving up. mcd's wasn't one of them. each to her/his own!

Tony said...

Viva la difference, l-girl! :)

One of the hardest things for me to give up was Slurpees, which I loved as a kid but now know are essentially liquid sugar. The fact that I lived for a year in Michigan, where there are relatively few 7-11s, helped greatly.

Tony said...

And thank GOD that inning is over. At least Dice's start last night makes it a little easier to use the pen.

laura k said...

Wow, hard to give up Slurpees! Artifical colour, artificial flavour and HFCS. I've never been anywhere near one of those.

(Believe me, I have my vices.)

A little night musing said...

Fast food is the comestible equivalent of crack. Or porn. Maybe both. Crack and porn.

I guess. It doesn't appeal to me, personally. (Neither do crack or porn, actually.) But I see the effect on people I know...

SoSH:

Crack and porn, now there are some vices I can get behind.

Tony, how old are you? That could be the big difference here. I did eat McD's occasionally in my younger, thinner, less healthy days.

Tony said...

l-girl, I'm 26. I think that probably explains some of it. My generation was not exactly raised to eat healthy, and we've paid the consequences. I know I have, at least; my metabolism is inchworm-slow and I battle putting on weight constantly.

Crack and porn, I will say, are not vices I have. Yet.

nixon33 said...

My generation was not exactly raised to eat healthy, and we've paid the consequences. I know I have, at least; my metabolism is inchworm-slow and I battle putting on weight constantly.

sounds like a cop-out to me buddy-boy.
no offense but i'm a part of "your generation" and i find that our generation was raised to make a lot of excuses for itself.

A little night musing said...

My generation was not exactly raised to eat healthy

Say what?!

My son is, essentially, the same age you are, and my impression when he was growing up was that we (the parents) were all OBSESSED with making sure our kids only ate healthy stuff.

Maybe that was only a local phenomenon, but I'm curious about why you think an entire generation was left untrained in healthy eating.

nixon33 said...

i hope this is the last of clay for a while, but i know it wont be. ugh

Tony said...

Okay, forgive the broad generalization. *I* was not raised to eat healthy. I'm not going to cop out or make excuses; certainly I could've chosen to not eat terribly for most of my life, but did so anyway. Like I said, I've just recently tried to undo years of damage. Believe me, being overweight sucks.

Hey, it's Aardsma. Yay?

laura k said...

I'm 26. I think that probably explains some of it. My generation was not exactly raised to eat healthy, and we've paid the consequences.

Sorry, but that is just plain horseshit. You're of the generation that has put organic, vegetarian and the slow food movement on the map.

My siblings and sibs-in-laws have learned how to eat healthfully from their kids, who are 23, 25 and 27. They are all into eating organic, whole foods, cooking, growing food, etc.

Even if you were raised to eat poorly, you're an adult now. You make your own choices.

Choose to eat unhealthfully if you want, but don't blame "your generation".

laura k said...

Being overweight and eating healthfully are two different things. I eat super healthfully and am overweight. I was much thinner when I ate crappy food.

Didn't mean to pile on there, I was typing my comment before I saw the others!

Or don't have faith, just watch Supersize Me every morning. :)

Tony said...

Thanks! Believe me, it's tough, but I'm giving it a good try. I have nothing but time right now; it'd be stupid NOT to use it wisely.

How great would it be for Aardsma to get out of this pickle unscathed?

laura k said...

And he does it! WHEW. Go Aardvark.

Tony, that's cool. All you can do is try.

Tony said...

Way to go, Aardsma!

A little night musing said...

How great would it be for Aardsma to get out of this pickle unscathed?

That great!

Tony said...

l-girl...have to disagree. Do, or do not. There is no try.

Now THERE'S something my generation can relate to. :D

nixon33 said...

laura k said...

Tony, there is no doing without trying. If you don't try, you don't do.

You might try and not succeed. But if you don't try, you definitely will not succeed.

laura k said...

I don't even understand that sentence "there is no try".

Tony said...

Gee, thanks, Tek. God damn it.

Rob said...

Is that an RBI?

No - First base was occupied, even though Casey went to second base. If Tek reaches first base it'd be an RBI, but he was called out as first base was occupied.

Tony said...

Spoke too soon, I guess!

laura k said...

ALNM, was he knocked down?

nixon33 said...

HEIDI

Rob said...

Carlos Pena was put on the DL... sublimation of a tendon in his finger, apparently. He said he felt something "pop", and the Rays think he could be done for the season.

A little night musing said...

L-girl, it knocked his helmet off. Weirdly, he was actually ducking when it hit him. He didn't even seem very shook up, just kind of shook his head and took his base.

laura k said...

Another good thing about radio: no Heidi!

laura k said...

That's Pena and Crawford on the DL.

Tony said...

Siddown, punks! Justin's your master, son!

laura k said...

thanks alnm

are you following both teams now, sox and dodgers?

Rob said...

L, actually it was Crawford I was talking about. Don't know why I thought Pena.

A little night musing said...

Hmm, I missed it, but I think Dave Roberts and his mad baserunning skillz just got SF another run.

That's 3 out of 4 of their recent runs.

laura k said...

Ish, that makes more sense. I posted that a while back. They've activated Baldelli.

Tony said...

Angels have tied it at 2 in the 3rd, two men on, no outs.

A little night musing said...

I'm following Manny. (And Yoyo, as efd well knows.) The net effect is that it's opening up a whole new world of baseball enjoyment to me. I'll have to write about it someday. (But I promised a friend that my next blog post would be about mathematics!)

A little night musing said...

Go to it, you angelic Angels!

A little night musing said...

For the record, it doesn't take much for Manny's hat or helmet to fall off his head.

True, but it got hit pretty solidly in the middle of its target area.

I think it was the fact that he was on his way down at the moment it hit that kept the energy of the contact from being transferred to his head, and instead it just pushed the helmet off his head (assentially, he was ducking out of the helmet at just the moment of the hit). Quite something.

laura k said...

For the record, it doesn't take much for Manny's hat or helmet to fall off his head.

The KC anncrs who were making me puke the other night were using that. "At least Jason Bay's helmet will fit over his head..."

A little night musing said...

That's *essentially*, of course.

What my subconscious kicks up...

Well, it doesn't matter how you feel about whether his hat/helmet stays on - the fact is it's not easy for them to come off somehow.

A little night musing said...

But I can't imagine trying to follow more than one team at a time.

It would help a lot if I had more than one brain.

I think I've said this before... oddly, one thing that makes it possible to follow two things at once seems to be that I'm listening to the Spanish broadcast of the Red Sox game. It's as if one part of my brain is paying attention to one game in Spanish and another part is paying attention to the second game in English. I find this fascinating in itself. (and, for the record, my Spanish isn't all that great. I can just about follow 70% of the discussion at this point. But I've had the same kind of experience reading in English and listening to a conversation in French at the same time, for example. It's very weird.)

nixon33 said...

its hard follwing everything. ive got 5 channels going back and forth: SOX/MFY/FKR/MANNY/METS (i like it when they win as the MFY fans get in a tizzy)

laura k said...

Getting 70% of a Spanish-language broadcast is very good. I'm closer to 40%. I can get the gist, but actual conversation, closer to 40-50%.

That was in NYC. We don't have Spanish-language baseball anymore.

Joe Grav said...

yeah, that 3 run HR in the 1st really hurt us today.

Lowell's had his struggles recently - shit, he ain't the only one - but something needs to be done with Clay, first and foremost.

All our parts are not clicking, for sure. But what's up with "something must be done"? This is the team. What else you got in mind?

Tony said...

l-girl...honestly, I have no idea. Just frustrated with Clay, that's all. They're not sticking him in the pen, they won't DFA him at this point, but the thought of him every 5th day worries the hell out of me.

allan said...

Frack. Work.

Pls get multiple runs in my absence.

laura k said...

it's frustrating. but if we lose him, who takes his spot?

laura k said...

I have to work too. The annoying kind of work that I can't listen to a game during.

RUNS PLEASE
