G119: Red Sox 5, White Sox 1

Red Sox - 000 000 203 - 5 7 0
White Sox - 001 000 000 - 1 7 0
Danks had easily set down the first 17 Red Sox batters and was eight outs away from a no-hitter against a lifeless Boston lineup when Kevin Youkilis smacked a single into left-center.

Mike Lowell then walked on five pitches and Danks needed a mound visit. He recovered to fan Jason Bay, but J.D. Drew ripped a double that one-hopped the wall in left-center and scored two runs, giving Boston a 2-1 lead.

After a quiet eighth, five of the first six Boston batters in the ninth inning reached safely. Jed Lowrie's bases-loaded double scored two runs and Jacoby Ellsbury's second single of the night brought around the fifth Boston run.

Beckett (8-7-1-0-8, 104) was stellar. He allowed two singles to start the third and two fly balls brought in Chicago's run. After that, only one White Sox runner reached second base. Bot wrapped things up with a perfect ninth.

The Twins shutout the Yankees 4-0 to drop the New Yorkers 9 GB in the East (they trail Tampa Bay by 10 games in the loss column).

***

Josh Beckett (4.08, 109 ERA+) / John Danks (3.21, 139 ERA+)

After the Angels (who lead the West by 14 (!) games), the next-largest division lead in either league belongs to the FKR, who are up 4.5 games on the Red Sox and 8.5 on the Yankees.

Tampa is off tonight; Yankees/Twins at 8 PM.

Thanks for nothing, Coco.

A Conformer said...

If Coco gets on, FY's streak will live on. I guarantee it.

Why the hell does Coco Crisp fall over the base like that? He's like the anti-Ichiro, instead of staying back he falls forward.

don is huffing the good stuff tonight.

Rob said...

Castig: "It's Pap Time!"

Women all over the world cringe when they hear that.

tim said...

For you, redsock

A little night musing said...

Redsock, you have extra innings? The feed isn't the same for MLB.TV as Extra Innings? Interesting.

Tony said...

All right, Mr. Pap. El. Bot. Nail this shit down, and we'll all go and pound some Budweiser.

Benjamin said...

I've got a crappy gimpshop too, but imageshack's being a bitch.

SoSock said...

So the "streak" is over.

Rob said...

Bot missed badly on that pitch but it was still thrown past Thome.

allan said...

EI not always the same as mlbtv.

We have EI but it is run thru Rogers Cable. Weird thing is, sometimes I have one feed and a EI person in the US has the other.

Anonymous said...

Also, why all the Adam Dunn hate? He's going to have his 5th consequtive 40+ HR year this year. He onbases .380 every year and slugs over .500. And his running and defense are no worse than everyone's favorite Manhattan born outfielder.

tim said...

I've got a crappy gimpshop too, but imageshack's being a bitch.

Picasa ftw. Fuckin' bay really needs to tan more.

Rob said...

Castig said a play-on-words without even knowing it...

"The Red Sox will have two knuckleballers on their staff, well, Tim Wakefield's on the DL, for the first time since 1953."

Go ahead and say that out loud and I dare you not to chuckle.

efd said...

One thing I've noticed recently with my EI package is that they're now offering both feeds for some games.

But I would kill for EI in HD... my Comcast system doesn't offer that.

Benjamin said...

Like I said, crappy.

Anonymous said...

What the fuck, Papelbon. You've got a 4 run lead and this guy has 10 homeruns and is built like one of those "16" year-old Chinese gymnists. Throw strikes.

A little night musing said...

Uri B. pronounces the name "Thom-e"

tim said...

Also, why all the Adam Dunn hate?

I wouldn't call it hate - I was just saying, I thought the headline was a bit over the top.

allan said...

tim: GOLD!

Tony said...

2 away!

I wonder how often Tek just shakes his head and goes "Jesus, Jon, not there!" when Pap's on the mound.

nixon33 said...

ish, THATS gold.

Water.

Hawk is depressed. This job must be really hard for him. To have to go through this at least 65 times a year (in a VERY) good year... hard.

Rob said...

Woo hoo! First round of dirty water is on me!

Jere said...

Yeah, I wouldn't call what happened here "all the Adam Dunn hate." And what's wrong with being born in Manhattan, home of the best Yankee-hating in possibly all the world?

Tony said...

Agua sucia!

I don't think I'm going out on a limb when I say that this was one of, if not the, most satisfying wins of the season. To go from utter gloom at a shitty offensive performance/wasted Beckett start to the utter joy of a big win/great Beckett start is truly fantastic.

allan said...

PERFECT GAME???????????

my fuckin' ass! (/elia)

allan said...

hmmmmmm, EI still giving me the feed, thru TC's babble and then the commercials .........

tim said...

Seashore (GIMP port) is no photoshop.

Ahhh, I just downloaded photoshop :P

Tony said...

1/2 game picked up on TB, a full game on the Yankees. I believe that qualifies as a "good night".

Anonymous said...

I'm not talking about hate from here, but from the media in general. About half of the baseball media seem to regard Jr. as the better of the two former Reds OFs on the move this year.

allan said...

crap - no post-game for me!

tim said...

Great win, COFFEE TIME!!!!!!!!!!

Gotta find the nearest 24 hour timmie's now.

efd said...

well, it was kind of perfect - just not in an MLB Rulebook way.

My EI feed shut off as soon as Don did the toss to the studio.

A little night musing said...

And what's wrong with being born in Manhattan,

Indeed. Who said something bad about being born in Manhattan? Because my (rather large) son would like to have a word with you...

A Conformer said...

So the Sox come out of Ulysses Stanton Cellular field with a split. 4GB.

allan said...

ish, i opened that and it was very faint and washed-out. hard to see.

Tony said...

james, while I share your utter disdain of the MSM, I really find it difficult to believe anybody could be saying Griffey is having the better year than Dunn this season. I mean, I could be wrong, but I like to have SOME faith in the human race.

Anonymous said...

There's nothing wrong with being born in Manhattan! I love Manhattan! Home of the Filmmaker's Cooperative, Anthology Film Archives, and Millenium Film Workshop! The Mecca of experimental film! Plus the Polo Grounds!

A little night musing said...

SBN cut out too (they often let us hear the postgame wrap-up) but I've another game to monitor now...

allan said...

manny up now

efd said...

and Manny hits a 2-run double with the bases loaded!

allan said...

loaded for manny - rip in lcf gap, one hop the wall, 2 RBI double. LA up 2-0!

Jere said...

Okay, I thought it was a criticism of Manny to say that he's a New Yorker. Sorry. And I thought you meant that people here were badmouthing Dunn.

A little night musing said...

So close... aiiiiii!

But double for Manny!

Rob said...

In other news, this is the time where not being able to drive really kills me the most: Thunderstorms in the area, at night. There are a couple really good ones coming in off the ocean but I'm shit outta luck because anyone who could drive me doesn't want to because it's late. Maybe I'll get lucky and not have to go too far.

efd said...

Scully: "You have to marvel at what Manny Ramirez has done!"

Jere said...

There was some really good cloud-flashin', like, two nights ago.

allan said...

We saw that with BAL-CLE tonight!!! Have not noticed it up here before. We were hopeful we might find both of tonight's game if we got stuck with the Hawk, but it turned out we got NESN!

A little night musing said...

Okay, I thought it was a criticism of Manny to say that he's a New Yorker.

???

I missed the original comments, so I have no idea what you're referring to. But Manny was not born here. He lived here for about 6 years IIRC. (I could look it up, it's on my blog in fact.)

I'm confused.

Rob said...

Well, since I can't watch or listen to that Dodgers game, I'm going to, as Hawk might say, duck on outta here. Goodnight everyone!

Anonymous said...

Very poorly worded post, I suppose. I haven't been in the gamethread for long, I just got back to work, so if y'all addressed Dunn earlier, I missed it.

And I really do love New York. I've spent a whole lot of time there over the last year or so. I don't know if I could live there, but it's a really remarkable place.

The Yankees suck, though.

A little night musing said...

I love love love listening to Vin Scully go all fanboy on Manny.

In fact, he pretty much goes all fanboy on the game, and I love that.

Tony said...

I'm out as well. Fine win tonight; one to savor, for sure. Now let's kick some Ranger ass next!

Benjamin said...

Still mostly nothing.

Jere said...

NESN calling the Twins-Yanks game a "wild card battle," yet the Twins, with the win, are now a division leader.

SoSock said...

Getting clser Phil :)

efd said...

Yeah, it seems pretty random as to which games they offer both feeds for... tonight on my system it was TOR-DET, STL-FLA, SFO-HOU and MFY-MIN, in addition to BAL-CLE. Obviously it helps when there's a light schedule.

I can't stay up for Manny's next AB so I am checking out as well... see you all later in the week, hopefully Wednesday.

10:55 PM: The first Manny/Dunn/Manna-Hatta comment. But it's been solved so it doesn't really matter. But that's where the topic started.

A little night musing said...

OK, Manny was born in the DR and moved to the Heights in 1985, lived here until 1991.

That'll take care of my OCD for today. ;)

SoSock said...

Slugfest in LA - Dodgers bat around and get 7 hits in the 3rd. Phils start 4th with a hit.

A little night musing said...

Bye, efd, till tomorrow!

I just watched the ESPN highlights of our game, and the host guy kept referring to Youk, in the loud, dumb-guy stereotype, Boston accent, as:

"The Youkah!"

Have you ever heard him called "The Youker"? Ever? By anyone, in print or in person? I go to Fenway a lot. Never heard it.

A little night musing said...

Are they playing Hava Nagila?

nick said...

man! I get home. get to see manny for the first time in ages (and in a dodgers uniform) and they IBB him. bah.

nick said...

but, that's ok. a game up over the mfy is a very good thing.

Rob said...

WLRHFTKLFY. I just realized that the Phillies/Dodgers game is on ESPN!

Rob said...

Talk about a Red Sox flashback watching that Dodgers/Phillies game tonight. Derek Lowe pitching, Nomar in the dugout, Manny holding up the show getting a new glove, and Jimy Williams flashing signs in the dugout.

nixon33 said...

jere, i've also heard BBT refer to him as "the youk dog"... never heard that one either, but i guess it goes with the "dirt dog" theme?

what is the club song that they are playing all around the MLB parks last year and this year, kinda sounds like the beginning of under my thumb and Hava Nagila (is that what you were hearing ALNM?)

my friend tells me it some cheezy club song, now i wanna know how HE knows that... hmmm.

A little night musing said...

Dunno. They were playing it just before Manny went to bat for the third (?) time and it sounded a lot like Hava Nagila.

And that IBB? That's happened more than once since he joined the Dodgers. NL pitchers not loving pitching to him so far. Hee hee hee.
