G121: Red Sox 8, Rangers 4

Rangers - 000 000 040 - 4 10 1
Red Sox - 024 020 00x - 8 12 0
Lester pitched at least seven innings for the seventh straight start (7.1-7-3-1-6, 108) and earned his 10th win in his last 10 Fenway Park starts (dating back to April 29).

Two of the three runs charged to Sid scored on a home run allowed by Mike Timlin. Justin Masterson pitched the ninth, allowing a leadoff double and a walk, but then starting a 1-6-3 double play and getting a foul pop-up.

Back-to-back two-run doubles from Kevin Youkilis and Jason Bay gave the Red Sox a nice third-inning cushion. Jed Lowrie added a two-run two-bagger in the fifth.

Yook doubled in each of his first three at-bats. Bay and Lowrie each had a single, double, walk, and 2 RBI. Dustin Pedroia doubled and singled.

The Yankees lost to the Twins 4-2 this afternoon to fall 8.5 GB Tampa Bay and 6 GB the Red Sox in the Wild Card race. ... Tampa Bay leads Oakland 1-0 in the 1st.

Luis Mendoza (7.50, 57 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.23, 139 ERA+)

Mike Lowell has been put on the disabled list.

Terry Francona said Lowell
got looked at today, he got an MRI, and we're going to need to DL him. We're not going to know today or tomorrow the length of this. We're all hoping it'll be shorter, rather than longer ... The things that worry you with the oblique are -- you always hear the doctor say, when it stops hurting, wait a week -- because these things have a way of nagging.
David Pauley has been recalled to work out of the bullpen. Tito:
[W]e had a lot of guys throw a lot of pitches last night. The chances are that after tonight's game, if everything goes according to plan, maybe we'll make another move.
Lineup:
Drew, RF
Pedroia, 2B
Ortiz, DH
Youkilis, 3B
Bay, LF
Lowrie, SS
Casey, 1B
Varitek, C
Crisp, CF

SisWalk ending?

Tony said...

Drat, Youk finally makes an out.

Tony said...

Wow, did the Dustin Diamond business really kill the comment thread?

Benjamin said...

answers.yahoo.com is pretty funny.

"Resolved Question: Is Brandon Boggs of the Texas Rangers related to Wade Boggs?"

"Best Answer Chosen by Voters: "no, and that's racist".

Tony said...

What an awesome start for Lester...not only has he only given up 5 baserunners, including just 1 walk, but he's giving the pen some rest as well. That's the sort of shit a top-end starter does.

Okay, I really *do* have a man-crush on Lester now.

Jere said...

Wade related to Brandon? That'd be like Dustin Diamond related to Mike D.

Benjamin said...

Josh Hamilton's wife just went on the DL?

efd said...

Tony, excellent point - giving the pen a rest was key for tonight, and Lester is delivering and then some.

Jere said...

After a "shaky" start, NESN pulled new-cam after about an inning. Classic-cam has given six strong innings of long relief.

Benjamin said...

Jed's pretty good too.

allan said...

lugo now on his second fifth of gin....

Benjamin said...

Casey's no slouch either.

Jere said...

Okay, headed for the 10-0 win that we should've had last nite.

Tony said...

Thanks, efd! I have my moments.

Question...now that Lowrie has more or less played himself into a job, what (if any) trade value does Lugo have? Should/Can the Sox just cut him loose? Or will he just rot on the bench for the rest of his deal?

Jere said...

GREAT play by that fan

Benjamin said...

I was hoping my Lugo seppuku comment might overtake the lead in the comment-of-the-night runnings, but it's probably ineligible for lack of homosexuality.

Nice catch, fan.

allan said...

Metcalf is no CI.

efd said...

Metcalf pwned by that fan!

Benjamin said...

Not sure where that 0-2 pitch missed, but ok.

Jere said...

Hahaha--that fan's catch is a finalist in NESN's play of the week.

efd said...

maybe Lugo can learn how to catch.
(looks around for Amy)

allan said...

jesus, tek.

Tony said...

Oh, Tek. Tek, Tek, Tek.

Tony said...

That "C" on Tek's chest pretty much stands for "Crap" now, doesn't it? :(

efd said...

Phil, if I could vote by text message for the comment of the game you'd get my vote.

VARITEKKKKKKKKKK

allan said...

TEK

so much for that idea that players turn it up a notch when playing for their next contract...

(or maybe this is turning it up................)

Jere said...

cRLISP

nixon33 said...

COCOCOCKSUCKER

Tony said...

Seriously, Tek and Crisp should just walk out to home plate every at-bat, do an about-face, and walk right back to the dugout. It'll save everybody a few minutes.

Jere said...

Unlike that recent night, this is one where the game's only shown on NESN, not both ESPN and NESN. In the boston area, anyway. I can never figure out how that works.

Joe Grav said...

I like this game a lot better.

nixon33 said...

hahaha, Mets blowing out the nats so kieth and ron are taking phone calls from viewers
hahahahaha

efd said...

here in NJ the game is on ESPN and the NESN feed is available on EI.
I am going to guess (and I think Redsock may know better than me) that it has to do with day/time of the game and when national/local networks have blackout rights or not.

Joe Grav said...

:(

Benjamin said...

Meh.

Tony said...

You know what, Kinsler? F you.

efd said...

nuts.

efd said...

aaaaand Timlin starts to throw.

Jere said...

"here in NJ the game is on ESPN and the NESN feed is available on EI."

That's normal, but I'm talking about on one cable system, where you'd think NESN ha exclusive rights, SOMEtimes, it's also on ESPN, tonight it's blacked out.

Tony said...

Okay, might be time to give Lester the hook. He had himself a great start.

Benjamin said...

Lester apparently contributes by having a big difference between his wins and losses.

Jere said...

because with EI, you can get a bunch of out of market games, that's what it's for. You only can't get NESN in NYC on EI when the game's on YES.

Jere said...

This was huge by Lester after what the pen did to themselves last night

nixon33 said...

You only can't get NESN in NYC on EI when the game's on YES.

this is true, and thats when you are forced to hear michael kay make up lies about the sox.

Benjamin said...

Thankfully foul.

allan said...

dp pls -- and then the ovation

Benjamin said...

Nice sinker. Too bad it was to first.

allan said...

alright no DP -- just ovation!

Tony said...

Thank you, Lester! Now let's hope Burnt Toast & Coffee Time can get to the end of this game.

nixon33 said...

i know beckett would be our number 1 starter for the playoffs, but man, lester is a close 2nd this year.

allan said...

lopez up

efd said...

ball up.... and out.

Benjamin said...

Fuck you, Timlin.

Rob said...

Timlin being Timlin!

Tony said...

October Beckett + '08 Lester + Dice staying lucky + acceptable pitching from Wake/Byrd/HH/whoever + Tito's playoff pitching management + Bot = potential for great, great joy.

allan said...

no - none of that shit tonight.

NO

allan said...

FIVE FUCKING OUTS PLS!

Tony said...

You know what, Timlin? I've loved you on this team. You were part of the great '03 Red Sox October bullpen nobody talks about. You came up huge in '04. You recorded a big out in the '07 World Series. You've had a distinguished career in Boston. And now, when this season ends, you can kindly go back the hell home and never come back.

efd said...

next pitcher pls

allan said...

masterson up too

GET CAMO GONE!

Tony said...

Fucking Timlin. Way to stick those 2 runs on Lester too, dipshit.

Rob said...

Jere, I brought my camera with me tonight but I never ended up taking any pictures. I was too late for the good sunset. Didn't see anything else I liked, even though we were walking the streets of Portsmouth, NH, usually a very picturesque area. But I've taken hundreds and hundreds of pictures there.

nixon33 said...

raspberry cheer for the 1st strike

Rob said...

What I'm not crazy about now is it is the 8th inning, a man on second and Boston's only up by four. And Timlin's still in the game.

NEXT!

Rob said...

Lopez throwing, Bot stretching.

Rob said...

That's what an effective Timlin can do! Squeak outta that one.

Tony said...

Wow. One whole out. Truly a boon upon the baseball team for which we root.

allan said...

up by 4 with 4 outs to get.

this should NOT be a problem

Rob said...

3 outs to get.

Even better.

allan said...

masterson was up - wouldn't mind seeing him in the 9th

Rob said...

masterson was up - wouldn't mind seeing him in the 9th

Me neither.

Tony said...

Can Lopez at least pitch to a few batters in the 9th? I'd like to see him eat up some outs, if at all possible.

Rob said...

Amazing. There are some guys who can throw 89 and make it look 96... this guy throws 94 and makes it look like 86.

allan said...

Lopez in 9th?

Salty a switch hitter, then two RHB (Metcalk, Kinsler) so probably not, according to Tito. Wouldn't be a bad idea either, though.

efd said...

wow, Drew almost beat that one out!

allan said...

MASTERSON!

go slider boy!

Rob said...

Second straight night without that CF camera...

Tony said...

That half-inning went by way too fast.

Rob said...

Bot and Everyday Eddie warming.

allan said...

Bot up - will not be needed.

Benjamin said...

Texas annoys me. Also the Rangers.

Tony said...

Well, this is sub-optimal.

allan said...

tito retying his shoes -- but farrell out now.

allan said...

tp pls -- why the eff not?

Rob said...

I'd hate to see Tito fall on his face on the way to the mound.

Rob said...

1-6-3 DP!!!!!

Benjamin said...

Even better than a sac bunt.

allan said...

fuck

yeah

baby

efd said...

NICE DP!!

Benjamin said...

There should be a Rangers exception to the hold threshold.

Tony said...

That, on the other hand, was as close to 100% optimal as it gets.

Benjamin said...

Water.

Rob said...

The first round on dirty water is on me!!!

Next one's on you!

efd said...

Youk makes the water dirty!

allan said...

Doity Water.

and 6 games up on the chokers!

Benjamin said...

"Yankees losers earlier today".

And always.

Tony said...

Agua sucia! Didn't even get to put in my "let's wrap this up and go pound some Budweiser" post.

Timlin's shit-osity aside, a real good night all around. I'm looking forward to a lot more of these in the next month and a half.

Tony said...

Now, let's hope the A's keep up their end of the bargain and help lop off 1/3 of that division lead.

Benjamin said...

Win expectancy never dropped below 92% in the 9th, but it didn't feel that way.

Tony said...

phil...see what happens when you rely on stupid-ass numbers and DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO THE GAME BEING PLAYED BY HUMAN BEINGS????!?!?!?!!!!???!111

efd said...

Yankees now only 2 games out
... of 4th place, assuming TOR goes on to win their game.

Rob said...

2.5 GA wildcard...

Tony said...

I will be happier than a pig in shit the day this season where I can say "the Yankees score doesn't matter" and actually mean it. Thankfully, that day is fast approaching.

Benjamin said...

The Baseball Tonight recap of the MFY game is schadenfreuderific.

Rob said...

Pauley's been optioned back to Pawtucket - Jeff Bailey called up.

allan said...

Pena with a 2-out BOMB in the top 1st off Doucher. Rays 1-0.

allan said...

Jeff Bailey called up

GUMBALL!

efd said...

I'm out, goodnight everyone!

Tony said...

If the Rays keep winning without Longoria the way they won without Crawford, you should start calling them the Tampa Bay Hydras. It's seriously absurd at this point.

Benjamin said...

Doucher? All-orifice team?

Rob said...

It must be the slowest broadcasted game of all time, Phillies vs. Dodgers. Harry Kalas and Vin Scully.

Rob said...

And I'm out too. Goodnight everyone!

allan said...

Hinske dong to start the 2nd.
FKR 2-0

Benjamin said...

Fucking Hinske homer. 2-0 FKR.

Tony said...

I'm out as well. Good night, go A's!

nixon33 said...

the AAA's.
what a bunch of cunts.

Benjamin said...

Rusty Kuntz would be on the all-orifice team.

Rob said...

Now, you all know how much Manny's raking out in LA.

Well well well. You think Manny's hot? Manny has 14 RBI since he was traded.

JED LOWRIE has 15 RBI since Manny was traded!

nixon33 said...

MANNY DONG!

nixon33 said...

TIED IN OAKLAND

Rob said...

There goes that little factoid.

Mr. Lowrie, your serve.

nixon33 said...

NOMAH WALK-OFF

nixon33 said...

fucking baseball tonight.
they do a whole segment on "players disrespecting the game" all because soriano watched a ball that he thought was gone and only got a single cause it hit the wall as he barely jogged. then they SOMEHOW tie in that manny is disrespecting torre because he hasnt cut his hair yet.
"the dodgers have rules, and manny was asked to cut his hair by torre/lasorda, he is disrespecting them 'cause he hasnt yet" or some bullshit to that effect.

can you believe this shit?

hey kruk, do you know that the dodgers are selling hats & doo-rags with dreads attached to them for god knows how much?

more like the dodgers disrespecting the the likeness of a player cause they make 100% profit off of it.
"maybe you dont need to cut that hair just yet, manny"
go fuck yourself. and furthermore john kruk, you are disrespecting humanity with yr mullet, the same way jeter is with his 1996 fade.
kid n play broke up , derek. move on.
