G123: Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 1

Blue Jays - 200 001 010 - 4 10 0
Red Sox - 000 000 001 - 1 7 0
Listened to all of this one on the drive home last night.

Spent the first four innings with the Blue Jays crew, who were actually pretty good -- meaning they simply called the game and did not dwell on any stupid shit or cliches. When that signal faded -- it was never super strong to begin with -- I re-scanned the dial, and got the Red Sox team for the last five frames. They were on 1080 AM, which was coming from Hartford.

It was Halladay's eighth complete game of the season. As both broadcasting teams kept noting, that is more than all but two major league teams! Cleveland has nine and the Brewers have eight. Fifteen teams -- half the teams in MLB -- have two or fewer.

The Rangers shutout the Rays 3-0 while the Yankees beat the Royals 3-2 in 13.

Boston is 3.5 GB while the Yankees are a distant 9.5 GB -- quite close to the 4th place Blue Jays, at 11.5 GB. The Red Sox lead the wild card race by 1.5 games over the Twins and White Sox.

***

Roy Halladay (2.72, 155 ERA+) / Paul Byrd (4.53, 96 ERA+)

Bit of a pitching shuffle because of last night... Byrd pitches today against Halladay, Beckett tomorrow against Markum, and Buchholz's next start will end up being pushed back to Wednesday in Baltimore.

whoa - I missed this on thursday. Maybe that is why he is hitting .218? Also Pinto makes a FB comparison.

Wow

I have the feeling that last night's Yanks loss must have been truly demoralizing for the Yankees. Shitty road trip, you come home hoping to beat Kanasas City, at least get a win. Rivera's on the mound, you've tied up the game against a relatively weak team.

Anyone can lose on any given day, but you have to think they needed that one.

Tempted as I am to almost feel sorry for them, I ain't going there. I'll take it easy on their fans that are my friends, but...let 'em rot for once.

Rob said...

I don't know what's more demoralizing for them on that game... Rivera throws a wild pitch. So, the ball can get away from anyone once in awhile.

But look at the bottom of the 9th. Betemit singled, Jason Christian pinch-ran for him, then gets picked off. Damon grounds to the shortstop, so you'd have a man on second with 1 out. What does CI do? He singles to right. That could have scored Christian.

Abreu walked, then Slappy hit an infield single to load the bases, then HGH flies out to center to end it.

What's worse? Wild pitch, or the pickoff?

Rob said...

Matt Holliday would probably tell you the worst getting picked off.

Hall of Famer vs. Rookie...
If you don't want a kid to make rookie mistakes, then leave him on the bench. Rivera's asshole gets so tight in tie games , you had to see that one comin'.

This makes no sense. Pitch Beckett toaday against Halladay. The new guy can wait.....

I think I read this morning that it was Mo's second wild pitch in six seasons.

I'd say the WP was worse.

I feel weird watching the Yanks struggle these past 2 weeks or so. The cautious, pessimistic side of me says that any team with that sort of talent can make a run (after all, they ran off 8 straight after the ASB) and they shouldn't be counted out even at this point. The wilder, more optimistic side says that the Yankees have looked like grim death all month and that both the astounding woes that team has with RISP (seriously, it's incredible how pathetic they've been) and the shaky-at-best pitching staff will doom them to an early vacation.

I guess, in the end, I'll believe the Yankees miss the playoffs when I see it. But this has to be the closest they've been since I became a regular baseball watcher about a decade ago.

Good point. I've seen these guys come back from the dead too many times (21-29 last year, remember?)to totally discount them. But, at this point, I'm cautiously optimistic they really will actually miss the postseason. Too many injuries, too old, too many underachievers. What a waste of the Steinbrenners' $200 million.

laura k said...

But this has to be the closest they've been since I became a regular baseball watcher about a decade ago.

Yes, and a bit longer than that.

I can't imagine how anyone believes the Yankees will see post-season play now. There's no special magic in that uni. If they were any other team, you'd know they were gone.

I also don't buy that they came back from the dead last year. One, they weren't as dead as they are now. And two, they won one game in the playoffs. Some comeback.

I AM LOVING THIS

Rob said...

Not so much when Greinke throws a wild pitch and ties the game.

Zenslinger said...

I think comparing the Yanks this year and last year shows that there is something to Runs Scored/Runs Against. I may be repeating myself from a month or two back, but...

Last year today they were 67-54 with a RA/RS of +146. This year they're 64-58 with a +37. Despite being up and down last year, they were playing much better through the year and belonged in the playoffs. This year, they're not only significantly worse in the standings, they're also just not anywhere near as good a team.

They've tied it up 2-2 at the end of the 7th. I kept Greincke out of my fantasy team thinking the Yanks would be due offensively. Not a good decision -- the Yanks' runs were unearned -- but he won't be getting the win.

Rob said...

Heh. Bottom of the 13th.

Well poo. Brent Gardner singled home the winning run in the 13th. 3-2 Yanks win it.

That's all right. They're still not going to make the playoffs.

I love how the Red Sox use their own private weather service, and the Boston Globe always mentions that.

The current weather forecast (provided by the Red Sox private weather service, Meteorlogix) in the vicinity of Fenway Park calls for the possibility of scattered showers during the late afternoon hours. At the point, Meteorlogix predicts mostly dry conditions for the evening hours.

So Byrd pitches tonight against Toronto... His next start is scheduled to be against Toronto...

The team he pitched against in his last outing before being traded? Toronto.

Heh, I was having a discussion on the way to work with a guy I work with, Jays fan, and he was bitching about how Gibbons would leave his starters in for too long. At which point I mentioned Tito, and the awesomeness of (JoS phrase I think) "Playoff Assassin Tito"

/random anecdote about using internets-words in real life

wooo lbj with the wheels! even though replay looks like he was out.

if this was in toronto, cito would have a great view of tit, as their dugout is on the first base line (still yet to figure that one out)

tim said...

Pedroier with the lack of wheels :(

Oh I see how it is, one-manning this game thread! Dammit, it all falls apart without Allan!

I'm leaving shortly too, to finish cooking my racks of lamb and potato/cauliflower dauphinois (yeah I have no idea wtf that is....its what the cookbook calls it, but it seems like it will be fantastically gratinated!

Rob said...

Don and Remy talking about Sox Appeal, and how one of the guys is a self-proclaiming playah.

SoSock said...

Hi Tim
You are not alone.
Although I too will be leaving shortly.
"Watching" the game on GDGD up in a hospital room while conversing with the occasional nurse.
I'll be leaving for a while myself about 8:30. Hopefully come back to a comeback.

laura k said...

I'm leaving shortly too, to finish cooking my racks of lamb and potato/cauliflower dauphinois

Now why would you want to go and ruin yummy lamb and potatoes with yucky cauliflower?

(lamb + potatoes = my favourite foods. cauliflower = the one food I intensely dislike)

Please steam us some spinach while you're at it!

Rob said...

Sosock, how's Cathy doing today?

Rob said...

You'd have to pour that steamed spinach over Halladay's head.

WHAT A CATCH!!!

SoSock said...

Injury?

Rob said...

Theo's in the booth... when Scutaro made that great catch, neither Don nor Remy said it was a good catch.

Remy: "That's the kind of bad luck you encounter when you face Halladay."

SoSock said...

Cat has had a couple of rough days, but hopefully we're on an upswing. Took the chest tube out Wed., then things turned ugly about 3-4am Thur. and the tube is back in now. We're in a holding pattern for the weekend.

Tampa/Texas game should be getting underway about now...

It'll be interesting to see how the games are scheduled in Tampa (if they're there) on Monday/Tuesday for the hurricane. They might be on the road, though.

Terrible terrible call at first!

Rob said...

Luckily for that first base umpire that bad call means nothing now.

Hey folks...I'm a regular reader of 'The Joy of Sox' since I live in Oregon am well away from the beating heart of RS Nation. Do you all know my best option for follwing games live on the web? I thoght I remember their being a pay service to actually watch the games but is their a free way to follow?

laura k said...

Bryon, you picked a slow day to de-lurk. Hopefully folks will come by to answer you.

Also, since you're new around here, you might want to make your profile visible. The blog owner is away right now (I'm filling in for him), but he would say the same if he were here.

laura k said...

Nix, your avatar is hilarious. But I miss Lou & Nico.

Bryon Harris said...

Thanks I-girl. The first thing anyone says to newbs at the other Forum I use is also "Fill out your profile," So I should have known. I can tell from the comments things aren't good. Do you dare to type the score?

laura k said...

Thanks Bryon. You weren't following? We lost 4-1. But it felt worse than that. We were never really in it.

You can follow the game online at MLB.com - or as we call it, GDGD - Goddamn Gameday - and other places like CBS Sportsline, ESPN Gamecast.

You can get MLB Audio and listen to any broadcast for $15 for the entire season and postseason - a very good deal.

Some people watch games live for free through international broadcasts. I don't know how that is done, but I'm sure someone here can tell you.

Other than that, I only know MLB.com, which is expensive, but you can watch every game, pretty great.

Hope that helps. Welcome to JoS! I hope I didn't just let in a troll. It won't look good on my watch. :)

Bryon Harris said...

Too bad...Well hopefully the momentum won't fizzle for the comming days.
Do you have troll problems here or something?

laura k said...

Do you have troll problems here or something?

We used to. That's why we use moderation now, except for game threads, then someone is always monitoring the thread.

Of course your question makes me think you are our favourite troll in a new disguise. But we'll see.

Bryon Harris said...

Which question is that? Asking for a way to follow the game online? Or asking about the score which no one had typed yet? Anyway...must be some troll :-s

tim said...

I did steam spinach, and it did not work :(

Also the cauliflower thing was fucking great. I'm not a big fan of it either but this thing I made....fantastic!

Bryon, yes, this troll has hung around a loooong time and taken many different IDs. It's made us a bit paranoid!

So how do you usually follow the Red Sox from Oregon?

laura k said...

Tim, if you could cook something that would get me to like cauliflower, you would be the world's greatest chef.

Nix, gotta keep the avatar for a while now, til Allan comes back. Unfortunately I don't know how he is because the boy will not carry a cell phone.

At my request, he called when he got to VT last night and called again today when he was leaving, for about 2 seconds each time (using someone's home phone).

It's a lot of driving for 2 days - 8 hrs each way. He probably listened to the game on the way home. Which might have made it feel even longer!

laura k said...

Hey Bryon, I just checked out your website (couldn't from work), so now I see that you are definitely not our other "friend".

So: welcome!

I keep thinking your name is Byron. Do other people do that, or just me?

Pepe Lepew said...

Hey, Texas won. Way to bounce back from that three-game Boston thrashing.
Damn Evil Rays. They hardly ever lose. It's annoying. But, like Skip Bayless said on the Show Formerly Known as Cold Pizza, "stick a fork in the Rays, they're done."

laura k said...

The Rays are done? You're dreaming.

Pepe Lepew said...

Hey folks...I'm a regular reader of 'The Joy of Sox' since I live in Oregon am well away from the beating heart of RS Nation.

Where in Oregon? I've lived in Newport, Corvallis and La Grande.
And boy, there aren't three more divergent places on the planet than Newport, Corvallis and La Grande.

Pepe Lepew said...

The Rays are done? You're dreaming.

Not me sayin' that! Skip Bayless. 'Cuz they have too many injuries, he said.
And Skip Bayless knows everything. If you have any doubt, just ask him.

Bryon Harris said...

I-girl,

I usually read the box score in the paper and check this and a few other blog's. It's a world apart from having NESN and WEEI. I was way into hearing the games on the radio when I lived in Maine so 15$ for the whole year sounds like a good deal (It might be a bit late this season.) Playoffs are on cable of course so I can go to a Bar and get growled at buy disgruntled Mariners and Angles fans.

And yea I get alot of Byron...

Also...Fenway getting wired for instant replay...good!

Sounds like a GREAT week.
Of course I AM an old fogey, so.....
Love live music, although most of what I see these days is small venue/street scene type stuff.
Don't know how old you are - did you see any of the "Further Festivals" after Jerry died. Ratdog and various configurations of the old band members, plus Bruce Hornsby, Los Lobos, and some others. Fun Stuff!
And somehow, I've never seen Bob live. Numerous Allman Bros. concerts, first time in '73, last time '06, but never Bob. I should correct that. I really should.

Musical Morons , that may be I just think peoples music tastes change with age, and I also beleive some people listen to music for entertainment not to find any genius behind it, There has been alot of music that just goes over my head , and i just don't get what the fuss is all about, don't you feel that way about the beatles , but there are people who would think you were a musical moron for not liking them,..........

laura k said...

There's a huge difference between changing tastses, not liking a kind of music, and not recognizing it's greatness.

I don't care for the Beatles, but I know they were one of the best and most influential bands, ever, and Lennon/McCartney were one of the greatest songwriting teams, of all time, ever.

I said I don't like the Beatles. I didn't say the Beatles suck. Big difference.

You said these folks don't know what all the fuss was about Dylant. If they don't know what all the fuss was about, either they've never taken the time to find out, or they don't know anything about music.

Not liking him any more because their tastes have changed is separate from that.

That could all be true, I think a lot of those people growing up in the 60's were some of the biggest phonies of all time, yet there are some who are still the same way today. I think you know who and what I am referring too.
