G128: Red Sox 8, Blue Jays 4

Red Sox - 100 410 020 - 8 11 0
Blue Jays - 200 200 000 - 4 8 0
Byrd (6-6-4-2-4, 86) hung in there, despite allowing two two-run home runs and not recording a 1-2-3 inning. With two outs in the sixth, he allowed a single and a walk -- putting the tying runs on base -- but got Zaun to ground out to second.

Pedroia hit a bomb to left in the first and the first five Sox reached base in the fourth. Bay singled, Lowrie walked, Varitek walked, Cora was HBP, and Crisp singled. Ellsbury's grounder scored a run, as did FY's sac fly (it also ended Marcum's evening).

Varitek hit a solo home run to start the sixth and was HBP and scored in the eighth. He reached base in four of his five plate appearances and scored three runs. ... Crisp singled three times from the #9 spot. ... Okajima pitched a clean eighth.

Elsewhere: Tampa Bay beat Chicago 9-4, Minnesota beat Los Angeles 9-0, and New York beat Baltimore 9-4.

Jeez. Tied for the wild card. Here we go.

Regardless of the Twins' schedule. It's August 22nd, and we're tied in the wild card. October can go either way now.

It's going to be a fun stretch ride. Really.

Jere said...

We've got the tie-breaker with the Twins already, and (if the Twins win the central), whoever wins our series with the White Sox next weekend wins that season series. If it comes down to that. I still want division, though...

Ortiz on Pedroia: "He's a [expletive] great kid, dude. He's the best. I love him. It's great, man. ... Dude, he comes up with some lines, and you'll be laughing. He hit a ball off the Green Monster once, and he came back to the dugout and said to me, 'Hey, Big Punish, you know it's going to rain, right?' And I was like, 'Why?' He goes, 'Didn't you just see the lightning show?'"

Wow. Tied for the wild card on August 22. Right on Ish...the tension is goning to coil tighter each day. It's kind of Cliche but true. And it will be fun.

I'm sure you all know better than I but I have distinct memories of listining to EEI late at night in August of 2004 and hearing no confidence in the sox whatsever (Not that it's too uncommen I guess). After doing little to impress for most of the season they started winning in August and kept doing it through September and of course...

Well hell maybe they can win some games and throw some strikes this fall. Before Fall of 04 Lowe was no Hero and we prolly even thought of Manny and Ortiz very different.

Go Sox!

Zenslinger said...

Before Fall of 04 Lowe was no Hero

Our Hero...Bartolo Colon?

Bryon Harris said...

Do you mean the game 7 against the Angles was won because of Colon collapsing rather then Lowe winning it? Like I said...you guys prolly got the facts pinned down from 04 better then I. Didn't Lowe get a win in all 3 series winning games that year?

Zenslinger said...

No, no -- I wasn't very clear.

I meant:

2008 Hero for the Sox...Bartolo Colon?

Like, someone unexpected stepping up.

It's a joke. Sort of...

allan said...

Didn't Lowe get a win in all 3 series winning games that year?

Yeah, he did.

You are right about 2004 and the "no confidence" feeling. I wrote at least once that summer that 2004 was shaping up as the most frustrating season ever.

Jays infielders are in a shotgun position.

I don't even know what this is supposed to mean.

allan said...

Castig: Please do not use the word "Moneyball" evey again. You have no idea what it means. NO IDEA!
It does not mean not stealing bases. In fact, it has nothing to do with game strategy.

allan said...

I think it refers to the position of the quarterback and running backs. But everyone can take that phrase and the "no doubles defense" and shove them straight up their ass.

allan said...

Buffy just had an orgasm.

Zenslinger said...

I think it refers to the position of the quarterback and running backs.

Yeah, but what does it mean for the infielders? In football, it's when the QB takes the snap further back, the Center kind of tosses it to him instead of handing it to him.

Zenslinger said...

Fucking hell, man. Can't we hold a lead?

Charlie Parker, my ass.

allan said...

No reason why Castig should know what Moneyball refers to.

It was only a national best-seller and perhaps the most important baseball book of the last 30-40 years.

No reason why he should trouble himself and find out a little bit about it.

allan said...

NYY - 1
BAL - 1

Zenslinger said...

So, the notion is that because Moneyball techniques went against antiquated statistical models that emphasized only power in hitting, people identify it with "small ball"?

The only thing I know about it is that it emphasized OBP in prospects.

Bryon Harris said...

I take back the Charlie Parker Remark. Byrd only gets that title if he's not a F'N STIFF!

A Conformer said...

If the last games are any indication, the C spot might not be a black hole the rest of the season.

allan said...

The only thing I know about it is that it emphasized OBP in prospects.

Only by coincidence.

It means that teams with less $ to spend (like Beane) had to look for advantages to compete with the big boys. So he looked for skills that were overlooked in the mainstream. At the time, most baseball people did not think much of OBP guys (believe it or not), guys who may not have "looked" like baseball players, so Beane went after them.

Soon, of course, everyone discovered that getting on base a lot was a good thing (!!!), so Beane had to look for other factors that are overlooked, like certain factors in fielding.

Moneyball means looking for things that help win games but are either ignored or under-valued by most teams.

I have no idea. I'm trying to imagine how it might have gone down. Anyway, two guys out at home (I can't say thrown out... hehe) in the same inning... I think this is the turning point. The Rays season is done.

Rob said...

I love this first paragraph of this TimesOnline article...

I am often asked if the Olympic village - the vast restaurant and housing conglomeration that hosts the world's top athletes for the duration of the Games - is the sex-fest it is cracked up to be. My answer is always the same: too right it is. I played my first Games in Barcelona in 1992 and got laid more often in those two and a half weeks than in the rest of my life up to that point. That is to say twice, which may not sound a lot, but for a 21-year-old undergraduate with crooked teeth, it was a minor miracle.

Condoms to satisfy needs of "young, strong, single" Olympic athletes

BEIJING -- The Sydney Olympics ran out. Athens doubled the number. So organisers of the Beijing Games are hoping 100,000 condoms will satisfy the needs of Olympic athletes.

While sex is not an Olympic sport it is expected to be an activity in the Beijing village housing 10,500 athletes, all of whom are in great shape and with plenty of free time on their hands once knocked out of the Games. ...

"There are many young, strong, single people in the athletes' village and, like everywhere, some will fall in love or other things so we need to make condoms available," Ole Hansen, spokesman for UNAIDS China, told Reuters.

***

Rob said...

Oh yeah. I read that story a time ago. Beijing authorities, for the entire city. But the sex in the Olympic village is a whole different phenomenon. The general public is not allowed in the village.

nick said...

Is sofa surfing an olympic sport? I'm going for 2012!

There is a famous story from Seoul in 1988 that there were so many used condoms on the roof terrace of the British team's residential block the night after the swimming concluded that the British Olympic Association sent out an edict banning outdoor sex.

I saw the mud-wrestling embracing footage on the Today show when they interviewed them... They showed it three times! Kudos to NBC. Never thought I'd say that.
