G134: Red Sox 8, White Sox 0

White Sox - 000 000 000 - 0 2 1
Red Sox - 100 024 01x - 8 15 0
Dice was great (8-2-0-2-7, 104), with an excellent slider and a economical pitch count throughout the game, but Dustin Pedroia will get the headlines.

FY was on base five times, with a single in the first, a double in the third, a single, stolen base and run in the fifth, a walk, stolen base and run in the sixth, and a single and sun in the eighth. He also made a couple of diving stops on grounders to his left for outs.

Jason Bay added a three-run double in the sixth that put the game on ice (4-0 to 7-0). Since coming to Boston, he is 3-for-3 with seven RBI with the sacks full.

Other scores: Rays beating Orioles 14-3, Twins leading A's 2-0, and Yankees beat Blue Jays 2-1. ... RHP propsect Michael Bowden gets the start tomorrow. ... Sean Casey put on disabled list before the game.

***

Javier Vasquez (4.37, 103 ERA+) / Daisuke Matsuzaka (2.98, 151 ERA+)

There is nothing but speculation regarding Josh Beckett's right elbow. And until the Red Sox make an announcement -- perhaps this weekend -- all we can do is wait.

Amalie Benjamin, Globe:
All along, Beckett had seemed more concerned about the injury than anyone else. While manager Terry Francona initially attributed the numbness and tingling to Beckett sleeping on his right arm awkwardly before his last start, Beckett said Wednesday, "I think scary is probably a good word for it. I've had some sleepless nights thinking about all kinds of stuff. You generally think the worst."
Tony Massarotti, Herald:
Though the Sox have not specified the nature of Beckett's ailment, recent indications suggest the right-hander has been dealing with irritation or inflammation of the ulnar nerve, which can cause numbness in the pinky and part of the ring finger. The problem can be treated in a non-invasive manner or through surgery, the latter of which requires the nerve to be moved or "transposed" from its existing place in the ulna.
Sean Casey had an MRI on his neck today. ... As this series begins, the Red Sox play 20 of their final 29 games at Fenway Park.

And: Orioles/Rays and Blue Jays/Yankees at 7 PM and Twins/Athletics at 10 PM.

What do we know about Bowden?

ISH SCOOPS ORSILLO ON BOWDEN BY AT LEAST 5 MINUTES.

Rob said...

I call this a very good move to give Bowden the start tomorrow.

Fits the mold for guys like Papelbon, Lester, Masterson, etc.

My cousin is at the game tonight. Sitting behind third base.

laura k said...

I think Don is following the thread and got it from Ish.

I'll never name my sources!

What do we know about Bowden?

He's fucking great. Huge pitching prospect.

SoSock said...

He's a football coach?

laura k said...

Not the cousin who called during the Yankees game?

Amy said...

Amazing how many rookies and sophomores on the team at this point.

allan said...

Even though (of course) TNSTAAPP.

Rob said...

Isn't he a sinkerballer? I really don't know much about him other than he is a top prospect. He's been named in numerous trade rumors, but the Red Sox have held onto him.

Bowden? Exciting times. I'll need to clear out my schedule for tomorrow (as if I really have one...), been hearing about the kid for awhile.

Amy said...

No...her sister-in-law was the one who called.

Only TWO walks for DiceK? Did I hear that right??

allan said...

104 thru 8 for Andrew Daisuke.

Just got tricked by conflicting edits. You press re-load and it says to resend postdata, etc. Then if you reload again it prompts you again for the same message, and you end up double posting.

It's so exciting. That's one reason I'm not too worried about how we do this year. We have a huge future directly ahead.

Castig got the news in between innings from John Blake, Sox PR guy.

You see, there is value in listening to the radio and watching the TV.

Sox Prospects:

Scouting Report: Bowden is a big righty starter with a top-of-the-rotation ceiling, but likely projects as a solid third starter at the major league level. He is an advanced pitcher for his age, but still has some room for improvement. He has an arsenal of three pitches that could be big-league caliber: a 93-94 mph four-seam fastball which tops out around 95 mph, a very good 12-6 hard breaking curve, and a developing circle changeup with plus potential. His main pitch, the four-seamer, has a late, heavy sinking movement, and he generally keeps it down in the zone. Also, Bowden has a two-seamer that is a few mph off of his four-seamer with a bit more movement. His changeup sits in the low 80s, about 10 mph off of his fastball, and is very deceptive, with action moving away from lefties. His mid-70s curve is pretty sharp and he keeps hitters at bay with it. However, he can telegraph his curve on occasion. Secondary stuff is really coming along in 2008. Overall, Bowden has an excellent command of the zone. One aspect that should come with more experience is improved pitchability against advanced hitters. Delivery is somewhat unconventional, almost 3/4 style, with a leaning motion while dropping his head a bit - but he's able to maintain it throughout his outings, so the Sox won't mess with it. Bowden is said to be a workaholic and just loves to pitch - another player who just lives and dies for baseball. Very athletic.

Pedroia is amazing. Just amazing. I really never expected that he would be THIS good.

I love our young players.

Laura, did your prediction of last win at Game 162 mean you don't see the team in the playoffs? Or that you think the will be swept in the ALDS?

Our friend Lance Broadway. We don't want to go there again.

Jeff Fagstein.

I guess Lenny Dykstra counts.

laura k said...

It means I'm not expecting postseason play.

Like I keep saying, I'll be thrilled to be wrong, and I'm still watching every game. I just won't be surprised if we don't make the playoffs.

Hi guys
Bowden's not done so great record-wise since coming up to Pawtucket, but that doesn't really mean too much. 6 GS with 3 losses and 3 NDs, no wins. More important tho is the 3.38 ERA and nice 1.18 WHIP

Amy said...

Bye, Laura.

Ozzie: The Red Sox would suffer a mental breakdown after their loss in the Bronx.

My only question would be who gets the WC? Right now there's a very good chance we end up with a better record than the White Sox AND Twins. In the postseason itself it might be hard to win, but getting there... we might end up as the default WC, I think, but we're almost certainly getting it.

He just may have to be my next favorite player, even though he is not a catcher.

Ozzie should guest on that NESN stand-up show. He's funny.

laura k said...

Ofer, that is looking more likely (WC) in the last few days, it's true. It's easier to think that after a good game like this, too. :)

But there are just too many missing pieces. I can't see a lot of postseason success coming from this team.

Rob said...

I'm not sure the Red Sox can steamroll through teams like they did last year... I'm still hoping they'll win the division so they'd face Chicago in the ALDS. But as it is, they'll face LAAAAAAAA.

I'm still trying to decide if facing LAAAAA in a 7-game series is better than a 5.

Rob said...

But I see this year's playoffs as being the biggest test the Red Sox have faced in the last few trips to the postseason.

2004 was Angels, Yankees, Cardinals... Although it was an adventure, still not as tough as this year.

2005 didn't go past Chicago...

2007 Angels, Indians, Rockies...

This year most likely, it'll be Angels, Rays, Cubs. Crazy tough crowd.

A Conformer said...

And the 'first career GS?' was me calling a Lowrie grand dong. Probably after he'd already K'd in real time.

allan said...

I thought I saw "first CG?" for Dice!

allan said...

BAL: 000 000 1
FKR: 120 703 0

Os coming back!!!!!

Rob said...

But as long as we've got our big starters healthy... could all come down to timing, really.

Right now I see this team as a tetering type of team. They could lean one way or another here this month.

As for right now, you've gotta feel great about the last four starts for the Red Sox with Wake, Byrd, Lester, and Dice. Then if Beckett can come back and be 2007 Beckett... Look out. Then can only get better with a healthy Lowell, Drew, and Casey. Jeemer's coming around, MDC's had a few good outings recently... Tek's hitting... It feels like things are starting to come together.

SoSock said...

I didn't come in till the start of the 8th tonight. I saw the 0 runs and just 2 hit. But is Amy right about just 2 BB?
If so I'm extremely psyched. If he can cut down on the walks, he's going to get awful tough to beat.

allan said...

Now if the A's can beat the Twins, we'll be 3.5 GA in the WC.

s1c said...

I'm still hoping they'll win the division so they'd face Chicago in the ALDS

Don't count out the Twins. It would not surprise me if they passed the White Sox.

I have not given up on the division, especially since they have to play six more games. 19 home games left, 9 road games left.

The Rays? Three games left vs the MFY's, Blue Jays, Red Sox, and Orioles and 4 games left vs Tigers on the road.

Hope ever springs eternal.

Rob said...

What amazes me about Tampa tonight is Kazmir only went 5 1/3 innings, throwing two fewer pitches than Dice-K did in 8 innings! Yet, they're still bludgeoning the O's.

laura k said...

As for right now, you've gotta feel great about the last four starts for the Red Sox with Wake, Byrd, Lester, and Dice.<

Seriously? You do? I don't. It's good briefly, then it goes back to mediocrity.

I can't imagine anyone is still think ing we're winning the division. It would be close to miraculous.

Rob said...

Actually there are 6 games left against the Rays. Even better!

Rob said...

L, you string together starts like the last four we've seen, against the Rays, and the Sox will be right there knocking at the door. I still hold out a lot of hope as long as there are more games against Tampa than there are games back to them.

laura k said...

BAL: 000 000 1

laura k said...

Fair enough. I don't see it happening, but I'll be glad to be wrong. I'll be here enjoying every second of it whatever way it goes.

s1c said...

Eck - I'm telling he's an MVP candidate (fy).

Yep, he is indeed an MVP candidate.

Rob said...

The rest of the season: 2 vs. CWS, 3 vs. BAL, 3 @ TEX, 3 vs. FKR, 3 vs. TOR, 3 @ FKR, 3 @ TOR, 4 vs. CLE, 3 vs. MFY.

laura k said...

All the games left vs the Rays is a big part of the reason I think the season is a dream. A split leaves us in the same place. We'd have to sweep to make up the games - and our record against them sucks. (Because they're the better team.)

SoSock said...

I wrote last night after everyone was gone that I feel very good about the division myself. I guess only RS saw it when he put it through later.
Satanic Rays have 17 road games and 13 home left. (This was after last nights games) We have 18 home and just 9 away, 3 @ BJs, 3 @ Rays, 3 @ Texas. Their last 8 are away, our last 7 are at home. Not that H/A means everything, it doesn't. I just think if we can get 4 of 6 from them head to head, we have a pretty good chance, and we've got a shot even with a split.

Rob said...

Red Sox season record against remaining opponents...

CWS: 2-2
BAL: 9-6
TEX: 7-0
FKR: 6-6
TOR: 4-7
CLE: 2-0
MFY: 8-7

Rob said...

I think it's 3-2 record against the White Sox after tonight.

SoSock said...

How bizarre that of all those teams, several of which are at LEAST contending, the only team we have a losing record with is Toronto.
Guess we'll have to fix that in Boston :)

Rob said...

FKR schedule (season record)...

3 vs. BAL
3 vs. NYY
3 @ TOR
3 @ BOS
3 @ NYY
3 vs. BOS
4 vs. MIN
4 @ BAL
4 @ DET

Season record against opponents...

BAL: 8-3
NYY: 5-7
TOR: 11-4
BOS: 6-6
MIN: 1-1
DET: 3-0

Needless to say, you can't count on the Rays to lose against these teams.

SoSock said...

BTW - Dice has top billing on ESPN.com's Top Performers header

Rob said...

Six games I'll be a big Yankees fan in September.

A Conformer said...

BTW, that 6-6 record against the FKR? Sweeps all the way.The home team won all 12 of those games.

Rob said...

Here's perhaps the easiest way for the Red Sox to win the division... (by the way, I'm going by loss column. Tampa's played 1 game less so far. Assume they win that 1 extra game)...

Red Sox need to gain 3 games outside of the Red Sox/Rays series, then win 4 out of the 6 to make it 1 GA.

Looking at it that way, what I see is a long shot.
