Ortiz Makes His Mark

David Ortiz became the fourth Red Sox player to hit two homers in an inning and third to collect six RBI in an inning:

Two Home Runs In One Inning
Bill Regan - June 16, 1928
4th inning vs White Sox
Ellis Burks - August 27, 1990
4th inning vs Cleveland
Nomar Garciaparra - July 23, 2002
3rd inning vs Devil Rays
David Ortiz - August 12, 2008
1st inning vs Rangers

Six RBI In One Inning
Tom McBride - August 4, 1945
4th inning vs Senators
Carlos Quintana - July 30, 1991
3rd inning vs Rangers
David Ortiz - August 12, 2008
1st inning vs Rangers
It was the 30th time in Red Sox history the team scored at least 10 runs in an inning -- the most of any franchise.

The first four batters in the Red Sox lineup -- J.D. Drew, Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Kevin Youkilis -- went 12-for-19, scored 14 runs, hit four home runs, walked five times and had 14 RBI.

The only two of the game's 22 batters to not reach base were Jason Ellison (F9 as PH in 7th) and Sean Casey (K in 8th in only AB). Jason Varitek caught the top of the 9th inning, but did not bat.

Scott Feldman became the first pitcher to give up at least 12 runs without getting the loss since Gene Packard of the Cardinals allowed 12 but beat the Phillies, 16-12, on August 3, 1918.

At least five teams have scored 17 or more runs and still lost the game:

Athletics 18, Cleveland 17 (18) - July 10, 1932
PHI - 201 201 702 000 000 201 - 18 25
CLE - 303 011 601 000 000 200 - 17 33
Reds 19, Phillies 17 - August 3, 1969
CIN - 113 1(10)2 010 - 19 25 1
PHI - 315 0 0 7 100 - 17 21 2
Phillies 23, Cubs 22 (10) - May 17, 1979
PHI - 708 240 100 1 - 23 24 2
CHI - 600 373 030 0 - 22 26 2
Rockies 18, Marlins 17 - July 4, 2008
FLA - 520 600 400 - 17 22 2
COL - 121 143 402 - 18 21 0
Red Sox 19, Rangers 17 - August 12, 2008
TEX - 0 20 085 101 - 17 20 2
BOS - (10)02 020 14x - 19 17 2

Mike Lowell strained his right oblique during his 7th inning at-bat. He will have an MRI today.
I've never had this happen to me before. ... I can't really stand up really straight. ... I'm kind of - I wouldn't say nervous about it - but I feel like I'm in uncharted waters. I'd like to avoid [the DL].
Ortiz is now in 7th place on the team's all-time home run list with 224, having passed Jimmie Foxx (222) and Bobby Doerr (223) last night.

Charlie Zink was sent back to Pawtucket after the game. Paul Byrd will take his spot on the roster.

Gene Packard

This guy was believed by White Sox management (including owner Charles Comiskey) to have been instrumental in arranging for the Chicago Cubs to throw the 1918 World Series to the Boston Red Sox.

So .... any media up in arms about Youkilis's yell and look into the Red Sox dugout as his ball was sailing over the Wall?

It is pretty much exactly what Manny Ramirez did after belting a dong in Oakland in a do-or-die ALDS game in 2003.

Dave O'Brien -- now one of the Red Sox radio play-by-play guys -- has ripped Manny for that bit of showboating for several years, as late as 2007 (on a national broadcast)!

I'll bet he was quiet about Yook last night, though, right? And I have a feeling we'll hear nothing negative about Yook's happy antics today, tomorrow or the next day -- and certainly not during a random game in 2012.

Gritty white guys yelling at dugout = passion, fired up, how much he cares about the game

Brown player with dreadlocks yelling at dugout = showboating, selfish, disrespecting the game
