G157: Blue Jays 8, Red Sox 7

Blue Jays - 411 010 100 - 8 11 0
Red Sox - 110 000 050 - 7 14 1
The Jays struck for four runs in the first for the second night in a row.

Boston rallied furiously with two outs in the eighth, highlighted by J.D. Drew's three-run home run to right-center (that changed the score from 8-4 to 8-7) and had runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth, but Kevin Youkilis was caught looking at strike three.

Toronto smacked six home runs, including three by Adam Lind. Buchholz (5-8-7-1-4, 79) gave up the first one (to Jose Bautista) on his first pitch of the night, and allowed five of the six.

The first three Jays against Clay: HR, 1B, HR. It was the first time a Sox pitcher had allowed two home runs in an inning before recording an out since John Burkett allowed bombs to Jason Giambi and Bernie Williams in the first inning on July 21, 2002. The last player to belt three taters in a game against Boston was Frank Thomas (all off Tim Wakefield, on September 15, 1996).
Example
Ricky Romero (4.28, 102 ERA+) / Clay Buchholz (3.21, 147 ERA+)

A win tonight clinches the wild card.

And the Red Sox have seriously abused the rookie Romero in four starts this year: 26 hits and 17 walks in 17.1 innings. He's got an 8.83 ERA and a 2.481 WHIP. Boston has hit .377/.506/.652/1.158 against him.

& @ 10 PM: Rangers/Angels.

So, I was sitting with a few friends in this small jazz club in Harlem (the jam session was quite underwhelming, but never mind...) when my friend, who goes to school in Boston, tells me: "oh, hey, remember I told you I was going to the game on the 29th? One of the girls canceled, so there's an extra ticket". So I'm on the Boltbus to Boston (gotta love the wifi on the bus), on my way to see Fenway for the first time, watch HH throw a masterpiece (he's completely abused the BJ's so far this year...) and clinch that elusive playoff spot. Then back to NY tomorrow morning, and back to Israel the day after.
Needless to say, this makes me happy.

allan said...

Very cool!

We used to hear jazz at a small Harlem club, near 145th Street I think. Where were you?

St. Nick's? 149th and St. Nicholas Ave?

nice! have a swell time.

Ofer, I wish you the ultimate reek of champagne and beer on the ride back to NY tomorrow.

laura k said...

Ofer, that's the one. It was especially great because we could go with our then-teenaged nephews and they'd be served w/o ID.

Have a great time at the game! Gamethread represent.

A Conformer said...

L, the place looks great, and my friends tell me other times they've been there the jam session was mouth-gapingly good, and intense. I guess we just fell on a slow night.
And to the rest of you: I will try my best to finish this thing tonight, for sure, but I think HH's got it covered. I expect a no-hitter through six at least. How cool would it be to see the clincher in my first (and probably last for a while) time at Fenway?

Zenslinger said...

Wifi on a bus? Awesome.

Conf getting in a Fenway experience before going back to Israel? Double awesome.

Amy said...

Ofer, that is great! I am so excited for you. There is nothing like a first trip to Fenway. It never disappoints. And if the Sox win--WOW--what a memorable first time to be at Fenway.

My daughter Maddy will be there, if they let her out of work (they'd better or she might quit, which would be bad). Where are you sitting? I am not sure where her seats are, but can find out.

Have a great time!

allan said...

ALC getting tight.

Twins win Game 1 3-2 in 10. Tigers' lead down to 1.

They play again tonight!

Rick (f/k/a westcoastsox) said...

Ofer's in from Israel at the game on 9/29, and I'm in from the West Coast at the game on 10/1. I think the game I'm attending is not going to mean much, but it's my first game at Fenway in 10 years.

I actually don't have tickets yet for Thursday, but am hoping that after tonight's clinch, finding tickets on Thursday won't be hard?

MacLeodCartoons said...

You guys are lucky - I'm so glad for you. I'm still trapped in Indiana. grrrr. But hey if it's the Sox v the Cards again I'll be there for the WS, just like 04! Though I picked game 3 to be at, not game 4 - aargh.

Oh, and Allan, I just bought Infinite Jest yesterday. In the past two years, I've only gone against my decision to never buy new books twice: this one, and A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again.

YAY!

Is the anniversary edition still only $10?

Amy said...

Time for baseball! I hope we clinch tonight for lots of reasons, especially since Maddy will be there to witness it, as well as Ofer. And it makes it more likely that Westcoastsox will get a ticket for tomorrow without having to refinance his house.

Amy said...

I am glad Tek isn't playing. Not only because he has been totally useless, but also so I don't have to hear all the hate directed at him.

Zenslinger said...

It occurred to me today that we could lose every game remaining and still get the WC. Not that I want to go in like that, but, still. Texas has really pooped it up out there, and there's no other contenders ready to step up.

Say what you like about the Braves, but their run is pretty exciting.

s1c said...

hmm, I wouldn't call it hate as much as a visceral dislike.

I am really NOT enjoying baseball lately... When did we last win a game?

July?

s1c said...

The comeback starts now!!!

nick said...

finally! redemption time.

Win it for Ofer! Win it for Maddy! Win it for my delicious dinner!

Amy said...

It feels that way. Poor Ofer---I hope this game picks up for his sake. It would be terrible to see a rout on your first trip to Fenway (or any trip).

allan said...

dear sox: if this is what you need to get all the suck out of your systems before next week, okay.

otherwise, wake up and play good ball now.

mattymatty said...

4 runs before we even bat once? F! OK, and now my wife just ate catfood.. and she's washing it down with red wine. Wow, this night's not starting out well.

allan said...

radio factoid: last time the sox allowed 2 HR in an inning before there was anyone out?

july 2002, when the napkin allowed dongs to HGH and peanuthead.

nick said...

nice play, fuckhead.

laura k said...

Catfood? Does that go well with red wine?

laura k said...

The word clinch seems related to sphincters to me.

I believe you're thinking of "clench".

Amy said...

That's a start.

mattymatty said...

DP!

Amy said...

Heh, I saw Matty's DP and thought I had missed a double play. Thankfully not.

Amy said...

Score 4 more and I will feel better.

mattymatty said...

I've never eaten cat food before, so I'll have to ask. ... nope, the official word is that cat food does not go well with red wine. Word to the wise, people.

nick said...

Why did FY go home? How are we going to get more runs if there's only one guy on instead of two for Youk? I don't get it.

mattymatty said...

DP = Dustin Pedroia. It's my own little thing.

V-Mart!

s1c said...

Ok, I'll bite - "was the catfood an appetizer?"

nick said...

Amy said...
Heh, I saw Matty's DP and thought I had missed a double play. Thankfully not.

I thought the same thing! I looked up at the TV in a bit of a panic for a moment there.

mattymatty said...

re: DP. Sorry to scare everyone.

The cat food was accidental. There was a bowl of it next to my wife's soup and she absentmindedly took a spoonful from the wrong bowl. (yes the cat eats from a bowl on the counter)

Rob said...

Finally I've decided to stay in and watch a game and THREAD! Although I've just been lurking so far.

Ish lurketh.

Amy said...

So what does cat food taste like? Having had cats all my life, I have often had the opportunity but never the desire to taste it!

s1c said...

Ish - what did you think of the Kessel trade?

mattymatty said...

My wife says the cat food tasted like sardines. She said it was pretty disgusting (no offense to anyone who likes sardines).

Rob said...

Don and Remy's mics aren't working.

This is HEAVEN!! It's baseball, crowd noise, and that's it!!!

Amy said...

Hmm, guess I will continue not to taste the cat food (though my cats eat the dry stuff so it probably is not as gross).

OK, HH, settle down and do not give up any more runs.

Rob said...

s1c, I thought it was bullshit, but it had to be done because of the salary cap.

Hopefully Kessel sucks from now on.

I wouldn't mind seeing Lucic send him through the glass.

Amy said...

Is anyone up in the pen? This is ridiculous.

s1c said...

Ok, do you guys think you could stop giving up the 4b's?

mattymatty said...

My cat eats dry food too (good organic stuff from Canada!), but when I met my wife she started feeding my cat the wet food, and now the cat likes it and begs for it. Exciting, I know.

Fuck! This homer bullshit needs to stop!

allan said...

good thing we're not playing the jays in the playoffs.

allan said...

i ate some of the dogs' healthy treats. hard dry biscuit type things. figured it would go good with tea. was not bad.

Amy said...

Wow, we only gave up ONE run that inning!! Things are looking up!

s1c said...

I wouldn't mind seeing Lucic send him through the glass.

Every time they play his team he should be put through the glass in the 1st period.

Amy said...

The ingredients in my pets' foods all sound good, but still---just NOT tempted.

Amy said...

S1c, Ish: HOCKEY???

laura k said...

There was a bowl of it next to my wife's soup and she absentmindedly took a spoonful from the wrong bowl.

This sounds very amusing.

nick said...

I once read that pet foods have a higher salt content than necessary because the humans owners who taste it like it saltier. No idea if that's true, though.

s1c said...

S1c, Ish: HOCKEY???

yep, bruins, opening game this week.

Busy week, clinching of play off spot, opening game of the bruins and oh yeah, saturday the big 25 for bh and I

laura k said...

i ate some of the dogs' healthy treats. hard dry biscuit type things. figured it would go good with tea. was not bad.

I was about to mention this.

This wasn't regular store-bought Milk Bones, which they eat every day. It was high-end doggie baked goods that we occasionally succumb to. They smell great, but I still wouldn't eat one.

Allan was happy to chomp away.

allan said...

the table is set.

"I once read that pet foods have a higher salt content than necessary because the humans owners who taste it like it saltier. No idea if that's true, though."

I think that's why you'll never see mouse flavored cat food.

laura k said...

s1c, congrats, that's very cool. i remember your anniversary is during the post-season.

mattymatty said...

I love that the Red Sox are rallying and we're all more interested in the content of cat foods.

re: Wife eating cat food. Yes, it was quite amusing. I try not to make a practice of laughing at my wife, but in this case I made an exception.

OK, two on for... do we have a nickname for Kotchman?

laura k said...

"I once read that pet foods have a higher salt content than necessary because the humans owners who taste it like it saltier. No idea if that's true, though."

This is true for crappy dog food. It's thought that higher salt content will get them to eat more.

High quality dog food is salt-free.

nick said...

grrrr...

allan said...

those yummy dog treats also had some yogurt-based icing. should have bought a dozen for myself.

s1c said...

actually according to IIams the salt content is based on keeping the cells healthy fluid level.

laura k said...

Amy, our excellent dogwalker is moving out of the area. :(

She's terrific - we love her. She's moving in December, possibly temporarily, but possibly permanently. Boo hoo!

mattymatty said...

Kotchman better not play much in the playoffs. And for the sake of all of your sanitys, I don't suggest you look up Adam LaRoche's OPS since he was traded.

Alright, keep chipping away.

laura k said...

actually according to IIams the salt content is based on keeping the cells healthy fluid level.

Maybe that's true for Iams. I know the really low-budget dog foods are highly salty, to an unhealthy degree.

allan said...

while i am intrigued at the fact that there have been runs scored in every half inning, i'd like to see a 0 for the jays now.

Amy said...

Laura, that's terrible. Did she let you know from the start she would be moving?

S1C, congrats on the anniversary.

Ish, hockey is not a sport I follow. Sorry.

As for the pet food, I am still not interested in tasting it!

Amy said...

Did we just get the leadoff guy out? Yay!

nick said...

'at's my kid. "sigh, another in-game commercial?"

laura k said...

Amy, she gave us plenty of notice - told us now for late December - can't ask for more than that. She's young and is figuring out what direction she wants to go. I wouldn't have expected her to tell me this when we first hired her.

Fortunately she does want to stay over when we're away for US Thanksgiving. That's a huge help. But shortly after that I have to find someone new.

We've had SO many dogwalkers over the past few years! We're lucky both our dogs are so agreeable and adaptable, unlike some earlier family members.

laura k said...

"sigh, another in-game commercial?"

Yay Emma

laura k said...

Boo Buchholz

Amy said...

OK, I have had it with HH.

nick said...

utterly unhumorous.

mattymatty said...

FUCK! This needs to stop!!

I'm getting way too worked up about a game that doesn't really matter...

Amy said...

I hope you have as good fortune finding her replacement. I shudder at that the thought of having to replace Maggie, who has been our sitter since some time in the 1980s. Boy, are we spoiled. She is taking Cassie to her house this weekend, since we no longer live down the street. She will come check on the cats once a day. Not ideal, but at least we know she is reliable and loves our pets as if they were her own.

mattymatty said...

re: hockey. I'm a Caps fan (grew up in DC). Hope you won't hold that against me. Actually, I'm going to be at the Caps opening night this Saturday. They're playing Toronto, so you're boy will be there. Maybe Ovechkin can crush him for you.

Seriously, whats the deal with all the homers? This is ridiculous!

s1c said...

amy and l-girl, thanks for the congrats. This year we get to spend our anniversary in that scenic little town called poughkeepsie (parents weekend)

Rob said...

Caps fan? No worries.

Three NHL teams I really don't like: Canadiens, Rangers, and Red Wings.

laura k said...

re: hockey. I'm a Caps fan (grew up in DC). Hope you won't hold that against me.

Last time I checked this was not a Bruins blog, so I wouldn't worry.

s1c said...

Three NHL teams I really don't like: Canadiens, Rangers, and Red Wings.

Can understand the Canadiens and Rangers but what do you have against the Wings?

c'mon, get this train moving.

Rob said...

Those three teams are all Yankee-esque. Rangers for being in New York and Madison Square Garden... Canadiens for the HISTORY and the TRADITION and all the friggen championships, and the Wings because they seem to always put an uber-team on the ice.

nick said...

off to prepare for emma's bedtime.

What does it mean when there are more hockey comments than baseball comments?

a - boredom
b - hockey season is coming
c - laugher in either direction
d - all of the above

you can vote

mattymatty said...

I have gamecast on so, please, someone tell me that Dustin Pedroia didn't just get thrown out trying to steal third base with two outs and David Ortiz at the plate?

Amy said...

Sorry, Matty. Gameday did not lie.

mattymatty said...

L-girl: I vote for "hockey season is coming"!

Amy said...

I will take option D.

mattymatty said...

That was the first half inning where nobody scored.

allan said...

mattyx2 - i see you are in good position in the W-L contest, though it would go to the 2nd tiebreaker.

s1c said...

What does it mean when there are more hockey comments than baseball comments?

It means the Sox are losing to a team that they have no business losing a game to and instead of bitching and moaning we are using our time productively.

Or boredom

laura k said...

productive boredom :)

Amy said...

ish - 96, same as matty, but your SB guess was 55, and there are others who are closer to 66, so you are out.

s1c said...

I can take you for a ride on my big green tractor.

Score some fucking runs. NOW

Amy said...

If the wind is carrying their balls out, why isn't it carrying our balls out?

Rob said...

Ah FUCK. Oh well. And I thought I was being generous with the SB guess.

allan said...

i had 53 SB. and 98 wins, which is now not possible.

allan said...

L had only 49 SB! Not much faith.

laura k said...

No offense, but I spent about 2 seconds thinking about my contest entry.

allan said...

LBJ has stolen more than anyone but one person guessed. That was 69.

laura k said...

Amy, I see you're not reading wmtc. :)

We're soon due to sign our new lease, so we're going to push for it then. I want one-third off for every month we don't have the whole house, based on having one-third less living area.

s1c said...

it's a quarter after 1 and i'm a little drunk.

This game stunks

Amy said...

Actually, I did see that on wmtc, just forgot the details. I thought the LL was checking his insurance??

(I have been reading more than commenting lately. Just too busy to get much time on the laptop at home or the desktop at work.)

Amy said...

What was my entry, Allan? I am sure I was too optimistic....except perhaps on the SB.

allan said...

mirror needs only the triple

laura k said...

I'm only kidding Amy. He was checking with his insurance but that's his question, whether or not it comes out of his pocket. Either way, I'm asking for the same thing.

s1c said...

mirror needs only the triple

And two hours from now he will still be needing the triple.

Amy said...

Don't yell at me for being negative, but I am really wondering whether this team has what it takes for the post-season. I am just not feeling it lately.

Rob said...

Looks like Ofer and I might have something in common.

Our first ever games at Fenway? Would-be wild-card clinchers if they won, and they lose!

allan said...

amy: 97-65, 49, .325

(last one was tek's obp)

laura k said...

Amy, I sure can't yell at you, since that's how I felt last year. I questioned whether we were even going to make the post-season last year, then was pretty sure we weren't getting past Tampa. Allan wasn't too happy w/ my attitude.

But it's not good to judge too much by current mood and game.

allan said...

the contest link is in important stuff on the right, btw.

s1c said...

This team is going to the WS. The WS!!!

Amy said...

At least I wasn't ridiculously optimistic about Tek (though still optimistic, compared to where he is). And I figured LBJ would have sophomore slump.

laura k said...

And if we go to the WS, of course we win in 4 games. Therefore this team is winning the 2010 WS!!!

allan said...

and then to disneyland(tm)!

Amy said...

If we win the next five games, I am sure my attitude will change. Right now, this team just seems so blah.

Amy said...

Actually, it would be (R), since I am sure Disneyland is a registered trademark. :)

laura k said...

Anyone else listening on the radio? OB & Castig are talking about what breakfast cereals they like.

laura k said...

But on the internet it's always (TM). More of an expression than a fact.
