Red Sox Sign Sean Casey

Boston signed Sean Casey to a one-year deal for either $700,000 or $800,000.

This is a solid pick-up for the bench -- good LH bat with some OBP, knows his way around 1B -- and he beats the hell out of Hinske (to say nothing of the Thermos(!)).

Don't forget... he will make one heck of a guy in the clubhouse too!

This signing comes on the heels of the MFY inking Morgan Ensberg.

Why is it that a guy who had a $4M contract last year is signing up for a $7/800,000 contract this off season? Did something go wrong for him?

Kept a solid first baseman away from the MFY too. Do those clowns have anyone who can play 1B yet?

My guess is reality is setting in. He had the markings of an impact player early on, and was for a few yars. But he peaked in his 3rd year, and his production has really fallen off the last few, especially slugging. The only way he was going to remain an everyday player would have been to go to a team that's really struggling, and he probably wouldn't have gotten much more from them.
The one thing I don't understand is this -
How the hell did he NOT end up getting a HUGE offer from the overpaying MFY, who desperately need a real 1st baseman. This deal will make the Ensberg deal look like a complete waste

Why would the yankees sign another aging lefthaned 1b????????

Im sure they showed little interest in him....

Because it's what they do?

Good pickup for our bench, yes.

I wouldn't be so sure Ensberg even breaks camp with them,,,Cashman doesn't get enough grief for the benches he has put together over the last few years.....That used to be one of their strong points, having a guy come off the bench with power.is there anybody out there like that anymore or have they all stopped using....It looks like Ensberg can you use some of what he had in '05 with 36 hr's and 101 rbi's........
