G110: Red Sox 2, Athletics 1 (12)

Athletics - 000 000 010 000 - 1 7 0
Red Sox - 010 000 000 001 - 2 11 2
Jason Bay (#44) scored both runs as the Red Sox win in extras!

Bay - who received a long standing ovation when he came to the plate in the second inning -- reached based in four of his six plate appearances.

He walked and scored in the second, was hit in the back by a pitch in the fourth, struck out in the sixth and eighth, walked in the tenth, and then tripled with two out in the twelfth.

After J.D. Drew was intentionally walked, Jed Lowrie chopped a grounder that Oakland shortstop Bobby Crosby could not make a clean play on and Bay scored the winning run.

Wakefield (6.1-4-0-3-4, 108) was superb and the bullpen was solid.

Tampa Bay beat Detroit 5-2 and Los Angeles shutout New York 1-0, so the Red Sox stay 3 GB and the Yankees fall to 5.5 GB.

Justin Duchscherer (2.37, 165 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (3.94, 112 ERA+)

A wise man once said: "The players come, the players go, we stay."

... and so the Jason Bay era begins.

And it begins against perhaps the best pitcher in baseball. In 16 of his 18 starts, Duchscherer has allowed two or fewer earned runs (on May 24, he threw a 8-1-0-0-4 line at the Red Sox).

Duchscherer leads the major league in ERA, WHIP (0.94, one of only two starters under 1.00), fewest hits allowed per 9 IP (6.96), lowest opponents average (.199) and lowest opponents slugging percentage (.309). He is a close second among MLB starters in lowest opponents on-base percentage (.255, with Dan Haren at .253).

In the six games of this homestand, the Sox are 1-5 with a .240/.303/.375 batting line. In the 12 games since the All-Star Game, they are hitting .241/.330/.360 and have slipped from .5 GA to 3 GB.
          Tampa Boston New York
Last 10: 6- 4 4- 6 6- 4
Last 20: 8-12 9-11 13- 7

That goes for you, JerryfuckingRemy.

I am never going to get my stuff done if this guy keeps pissing me off!

At the end of the day it is sport. No-one died.

Remy treats it like affairs of state.

The Dolphins.

Actually, it's more of a pity of the fans. Sorry, Lord.

laura k said...

Maybe Lord thinks I'll attack him for mentioning that other sport.

But nah.

andy said...

Just like most of the past Red Sox players that leave when they are good Manny will most likely be hurt soon.

tim said...

Oh look, that wonderful embarrassment to the organization, Sox Appeal is back for a second year! Yay! Piece of shit, takes away one of those tables from people who actually want to see the game rather than get some tang.

Bay OBP of 1.000!

Lord Lynch said...

Oh great - pre-season proper football on my TV...

Have we signed Jason Bay?

Lord Lynch said...

I am somewhat relieved that Sox Appeal has not made it over the pond, and I fear I am not poorer for its omission from our schedules..

Patrick said...

How well did Bay handle that carom?

tim said...

OMG look at how Bay didn't even TRY to throw the runner out at 2nd! What a joke!

Lord Lynch said...

Garrett Anderson breaks up the ponson fledgling no-hitter....

tim said...

nice catch!

Lord Lynch said...

Manny would have caught that...

efd said...

Whoa, nice sliding catch by Bay!!

And it's *Craig* Hansen, Remy.

Patrick said...

LOL @ standing O. Fenway faithful are losing my respect quickly.

Anonymous said...

Niceeee from Bay

A Conformer said...

So- this is going well so far for Bay

allan said...

And it's *Craig* Hansen, Remy.

He's a little uncertain when it comes to the guys in the minor leagues.

tim said...

I want to eat lobster.

And steam spinach.

Anonymous said...

Why Patrick? They're supporting the new guy...nothing wrong with that surely?

tim said...

Good bunt, even better defensive play.

Patrick said...

It seems a bit excessive, like it's in spite of Manny.

A Conformer said...

Remember the mighty Carrell fist bump?

Now, that was cool. Carrell looked outmatched.

tim said...

It seems a bit excessive, like it's in spite of Manny.

I didn't really think that. I just think they're excited to have Bay and are welcoming him into town for his first game.

Lord Lynch said...

Anyone else having problems with MLB TV?

laura k said...

Who is Chris Hansen?

Anonymous said...

mine's fine lord...sup with yours?

laura k said...

Ah, just scrolled up, got the answer.

tim said...

Very professional camera work there NESN...missed the pitch and hit because they were too busy showing the asshole in a Ray Allen jersey celebrating catching a foul ball.

allan said...

i keep restarting mine, but it goes out for minutes at a time. gdgd to the rescue.

Lord Lynch said...

Keeps freezing, pixellating and buffering - and now I have no picture or sound...

laura k said...

Remy forgets you don't go on Leno because you're in L.A. You go on because YOU WIN THE WORLD SERIES.

Which Manny helped us do TWICE.

Anonymous said...

strange mlbtv usually plays up for me fingers crossed but at the moment it seems fine

laura k said...

So leaving the TV off mute I finally know what ads you guys were singing the other day. I never would have guessed the "people around the world give each other Heinekins" was the lalalalala it's love commercial you were all doing.

laura k said...

usually when I am running out for a few minutes to pick up some food (as I am about to do) I'll put the game on pause so I can catch up when I get back, plus fast-forward through some commercials.

allan said...

Actually, no big traffic. Was checking statcounter, but I think it's about 20-25. And total traffic today is a bit down from yesterday.

tim said...

Seems to be doing alright with the wall thus far.

Patrick said...

I'd like J.D. in a clean up spot but with Ortiz there, he'd be better of batting second or 5/6th.

2nd wouldn't be bad with Ortiz 4th.

laura k said...

I agree that the crowd is going overboard for Bay.

I just thought of another caveat to this whole Manny trade..........

What's the tiebreaker going to be for the W-L contest?

I thought about that too. I figured it should just remain.

laura k said...

Oh shit, the contest!!! Good call 9C.

tim said...

Average of Boston OPS + LAD OPS? Or weight them based on games?

Patrick said...

Number of Dustin hits would be awesome if we had to change it up.

laura k said...

I was watching some commercials for dumb NESN shows, and they interrupted them with a baseball game!

tim said...

Good call 9C.

New nickname?

tim said...

Kinda shitty to have to predict something like that when we're like 2/3 through the season.

laura k said...

New nickname?

Oh shit, I saw the ....... and thought it was 9Casey! I had to scroll back up, I was all confused.

Patrick said...

I just love Dustin.

tim said...

Ahh, L - makes sense.

And yes, we all love the laser show. Was my avatar for awhile actually back at the beginning of the season.

allan said...

Contest:

Do we use only his Boston OPS -- which was/is .927?

Patrick said...

EM DEE SEE! EM DEE SEE!

efd said...

seriously, showing that comedy promo in the middle of an inning is unconscionable. Almost as bad as those in-inning car commercials you have to deal with on Rogers.

tim said...

Remember when starters went at least 7 or 8 nightly? Yeah...

Patrick said...

Boston OPS works for me, even though I lose.

tim said...

Yeah that comedy thing was horse shit. wtf...the amount of ads fuckin EVERYWHERE in fenway is shitty too. i was watching the 75 world series last night, and not one goddamn ad! it was beautiful!

laura k said...

efd, you are cdn, or you pay close attention to game threads?

tim said...

Boston OPS is cool, but I also lose.

laura k said...

There were ads all over the Green Monster all through the teens, 20s, 30s, 40s.

But you know I totally agree about the ads! Do I ever.

tim said...

When did they install chin straps on the hats?

It's good to see Wake on the giving end of one of these 1-run losses instead of the receiving end. Keep it up.

Yeah, I've seen photos of it plastered in ads. It's getting there again.

tim said...

Andruw Jones making sense of investing?

laura k said...

It is nice, but a few more runs wouldn't hurt.

efd said...

efd, you are cdn, or you pay close attention to game threads?

The latter, although sometimes more closely than others. Plus I have the Extra Innings package, so I see the Rogers feed from time to time.

Oh, and belated thanks for your welcome comment earlier - I appreciate it!

allan said...

Contest says OPS, not Red Sox OPS.

I think I may have to use his entire season stats ... keeps the suspense going. ??

tim said...

Speaking of ads...heh, "Giant Ass" when a right handed hitters up

laura k said...

The latter, although sometimes more closely than others. Plus I have the Extra Innings package, so I see the Rogers feed from time to time.

That's funny, I wonder if that ever happened to us in NYC and we didn't know it.

I see on your profile you are in my hometown.Even tho I was ready to leave, I still feel envious of everyone there!

andy said...

My personal take on the Manny deal is this, and it's not media inspired.

He is all about the money. He does good in 04 and then wants to be traded. 05 he was good and then wants to be traded. 06 he tanked it at the end after the deadline and then all of a sudden he is happy to be in Boston. He plays very well and they win the Series. He acts like a media darling and is definitely acting un-manny like. Then he plays good and 2 weeks before the deadline he blows a gasket. My opinion is that he wanted to be traded since maybe 2005 so that the new team would try to sign him to a new contract at that time for more money per year then he was making or would have made with the Sox. He was hoping the Sox would just extend his contract for more money this year. They would not play into that so he basically forced them to trade him. The FO would have been smart and dumb to give him a new contract. Smart because he is Manny and dumb because he is Manny. He did not honor the contract he was in with the Sox for at least the last 3 years so why would any team think he would honor theirs? I predict he takes it in the last 2 years of any 4 yr deal he gets. Sure you can attack this and say he has integrity but I say he is all about the money. His actions were perfect all along only if that was his goal.

laura k said...

giant ass :)

tim said...

Isn't this the guy I was curious about acquiring before the deadline? Casilla? I think so. Would've been sweeeeeet!

tim said...

Kevin being Casey

laura k said...

Andy, no offense, but I think you're too late or in the wrong thread.

andy said...

How come on MLBtv I can never hear Tom Caron?

Benjamin said...

That's a pretty crappy third hit of the night.

andy said...

Laura I just had to get it out there and I never look where I am posting.

A Conformer said...

OK, this doesn't have anything to do with anything, but... have you noticed how J-centric the Sox are? 5 players from the lineup (2 Jasons, JD, Jed, Jacoby), 2 in the starting rotation (Jon & Josh) & three in the bullpen (Jonathan, Justin & Javier), And, of course, Julio on the DL... makes you think, who's available this offseason and has a first name that starts with a J?

andy said...

Still relevant since there was discussion here and this is game one without.

tim said...

How come on MLBtv I can never hear Tom Caron?

I've had that issue with MLB.TV too...

laura k said...

Tom Caron only on local feed. They don't pay to be national.

andy said...

What does Tom say?

laura k said...

Just my opinion. We haven't been discussing it here, we've been moving on. And yelling at Remy for not moving on.

But that was just my own opinion, I'm not speaking in any official capacity.

andy said...

Well yell if you will at me. I am over it now. Just wanted my thoughts to be out there. Sorry I was not here earlier to be on time. I deserve some heat for being on it still though I acknowledge that.

Patrick said...

Fireworks going off here sounds like artillery. Dog scared out of its wits. Reminds me of a song:

*I think I heard a bomb! There must be a celebration. If anything was wrong, they'd tell me on TV*

laura k said...

TC says things like, "This is the big baseball story today, this happened with the Patriots or Celtics or Bruins, watch This Show brought to you by This Sponsor after the game."

Tony said...

Boy, do I goddamn hate MLB.com Gameday. And it's by far the best one of those!

andy said...

Tom sucks then and I am glad I don't hear him.

laura k said...

Not heat, not yelling. Simply a calmly stated opinion. Surely you can see the difference.

efd said...

I see on your profile you are in my hometown.

I have to confess, I am actually in NJ about 20 miles outside the city - it's just easier to say NYC, plus I lived there (in the city itself) for about 20 years so I still feel like a New Yorker.

I guess it's like saying I'm from Boston, instead of the suburb I grew up in, when people ask where I'm from originally.

andy said...

I see it Laura. I see it. Hey this Okajima guy looks down when he pitches.

How is that for being late? Late or just being every single away announcer.

laura k said...

"I have to confess, I am actually in NJ about 20 miles outside the city - it's just easier to say NYC,"

I get that.

"plus I lived there (in the city itself) for about 20 years so I still feel like a New Yorker."

Me too! And I'm not even in the country anymore, and we've gone suburban, and I still feel like a New Yorker.
