G110: Red Sox 2, Athletics 1 (12)

Athletics - 000 000 010 000 - 1 7 0
Red Sox - 010 000 000 001 - 2 11 2
Jason Bay (#44) scored both runs as the Red Sox win in extras!

Bay - who received a long standing ovation when he came to the plate in the second inning -- reached based in four of his six plate appearances.

He walked and scored in the second, was hit in the back by a pitch in the fourth, struck out in the sixth and eighth, walked in the tenth, and then tripled with two out in the twelfth.

After J.D. Drew was intentionally walked, Jed Lowrie chopped a grounder that Oakland shortstop Bobby Crosby could not make a clean play on and Bay scored the winning run.

Wakefield (6.1-4-0-3-4, 108) was superb and the bullpen was solid.

Tampa Bay beat Detroit 5-2 and Los Angeles shutout New York 1-0, so the Red Sox stay 3 GB and the Yankees fall to 5.5 GB.

Justin Duchscherer (2.37, 165 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (3.94, 112 ERA+)

A wise man once said: "The players come, the players go, we stay."

... and so the Jason Bay era begins.

And it begins against perhaps the best pitcher in baseball. In 16 of his 18 starts, Duchscherer has allowed two or fewer earned runs (on May 24, he threw a 8-1-0-0-4 line at the Red Sox).

Duchscherer leads the major league in ERA, WHIP (0.94, one of only two starters under 1.00), fewest hits allowed per 9 IP (6.96), lowest opponents average (.199) and lowest opponents slugging percentage (.309). He is a close second among MLB starters in lowest opponents on-base percentage (.255, with Dan Haren at .253).

In the six games of this homestand, the Sox are 1-5 with a .240/.303/.375 batting line. In the 12 games since the All-Star Game, they are hitting .241/.330/.360 and have slipped from .5 GA to 3 GB.

Did Allan's work all of a sudden block JoS?

tim said...

30 consecutive scoreless innings to start career? I sense this will be coming to an end before it hits 31.

Tony said...

Anybody mind Halos/Yankees PBP from me? It feels like a service I can do for you all.

402, heh. Close.

tim said...

Alright Bay - this is it!

laura k said...

I have efd at 401. No?

Rob said...

This could be the biggest moment right here in Bay's MLB career.

laura k said...

I don't know what happened to Allan re/ JoS. He hasn't figured it out yet.

Patrick said...

I meant going for 401. He obviously wasn't aiming for 02

nixon33 said...

I WANNA SEE THE MUMMY... oh... right...

laura k said...

Trade him!

tim said...

Ziegler heil. That wasn't pretty.

Tony said...

Base hit Hunter! 1-0 Angels.

laura k said...

Oh I get it, the word coincidentally was in quotes.

efd said...

I have me at 401 too! :)

Tony said...

That Ziegler kid is something else. But for right now, screw him.

tim said...

In other news, I'm fucked to high heaven for my exam tomorrow night. Should probably start studying after this game tonight.

nixon33 said...

shit.

in other news, mo just gave up a run in the 9th, so far... no outs. 2 on! HAHA

laura k said...

From A:

"A bay breeze"

efd said...

awesome... and off Fruit Bat to boot!

laura k said...

The man's 1st game thread and he gets the 401. A good omen.

Tony said...

The Tigers need to score some damn runs.

tim said...

Oh god. Remy: "Jason Bay Watch"

Patrick said...

but hey, it's no blown save...

laura k said...

OK, it can't be a work block, b/c he can get to the dashboard and other blogs. Just not JoS!

Tony said...

Anderson strikes out swinging. Yeesh. One away, Kendrick up.

Benjamin said...

LAA - 000 000 001
MFY - 000 000 00

Two on with no outs against Fruitbat.

On the other hand:

DET - 101 000
FKR - 002 002

laura k said...

What's going on w/ the FKR game?

tim said...

Double play in order.

laura k said...

Oops, just saw that, never mind. Shit.

Patrick said...

4-2 rays after 6

Tony said...

One pitch, GIDP. Way to go, Kendrick.

Here comes K-Rod.

tim said...

JOS is too cool for his work's internets.

laura k said...

"Oh god. Remy: "Jason Bay Watch" "

There it is, our first Jason Bay Watch sighting. Yesterday Allan wondered how long it would take. One game.

Rob said...

Anybody hear that CHB of all people has been dispatched to Los Angeles to cover Manny's debut?

tim said...

wtf is with the behind plate camera angle? shitty.

Patrick said...

Sarah needs to come back.

tim said...

L, you must have missed the image I posted earlier in this thread. It was the headline on boston.com earlier today.

laura k said...

Tim, that figures. I did miss it. OK, it took only a few hours!

nixon33 said...

they were using bay watch on boston.com today.

CHB in LA you gotta be shitting me!

Tony said...

How was the reaction for Bay, btw?

nixon33 said...

MIKEY LOWELL! (as gerardi calls him)

tim said...

NICE PLAY MIKEY!

efd said...

Shaughnessy at work a few weeks ago: You know, I'd love to get out to LA... what can I to so that the Globe would have to send me out there?

laura k said...

Tremendous standing o. Crowd went wild. He had to step out to touch his helmet.

Then huge ovation for everything he did!

Tony said...

A-Rod gets punched out on a 3-2 change. 1 away.

A Conformer said...

Come on, Paps. We need a fucking win.

laura k said...

Shaughnessy at work a few weeks ago: You know, I'd love to get out to LA... what can I to so that the Globe would have to send me out there?

LOL

Tony said...

Kinda what I figured, l-girl. Thanks for letting me know. :)

tim said...

How was the reaction for Bay, btw?

Standing O for his first AB, which was nice. Standing O when he made a nice catch, also cool. Standing O when he made a quick throw into second, preventing the runner from moving up. This is where I drew the line.

laura k said...

I wish Bot would be Botlike.

tim said...

"Framed by cash" - drink!

Tony said...

Giambi gets under one, pops to Hunter. 2 away.

tim said...

Take that, Bing!

laura k said...

Tony, by the third ovation it seemed a bit excessive, like saying FU to Manny. Or some of us thought so anyway.

But the big welcome was great.

nixon33 said...

its a different crowd at fenway now.

Rob said...

It seems like the way Bot stands at the belt now, that closed stance, it allows his shoulders to fly open.

Patrick said...

Do you want to be a part of that crowd? Well you can, with my one time offer...

laura k said...

Thank you JayBay!

Tony said...

Sigh. That does sound like a bummer.

Cano pops to right. Fucking K-Rod, man...that creep can roll.

Halos keep up their end of the bargain. Now let's get it done, Sox!

laura k said...

its a different crowd at fenway now.

As compared to when?

nixon33 said...

my bro planned a trip months ago to go out to LA this week, his buddys out there bought dodgers tickets weeks ago... hes gonna see manny. funny

Patrick said...

Jacobay, Jaybay, and Jayday

Rob said...

On Fire!

tim said...

Cano pops to right. Fucking K-Rod, man...that creep can roll.

Shomer shabbos!

nixon33 said...

compared to when there were tix available and you didnt have to be rich to get tix! haha, but you know what i mean, its just different. i know that comes with championships... believe me i'm fine with it. its just different.

Tony said...

What's going on in the game? Fucking Yahoo's GameChannel locked up.

laura k said...

Allan is calling an On Fire walkoff

laura k said...

But I posted it too late. Doing double duty here, not easy!

tim said...

Manufacturing that shit!

Rob said...

Casey for Cash. I like this move.

Tony said...

Shomer shabbos!

Ten thousand years of beautiful tradition from Moses to Sandy Koufax - YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT I'M LIVING IN THE PAST!!!!!!

Patrick said...

You don't have to be rich. No sir. Not with Patrick's one time offer. Anyone with a car and some time can find themselves at Fenway...

tim said...

Drew on 2nd, casey coming in to hit.

efd said...

this would be a great time for a proclamation from the Mayor

(?!)

Rob said...

When asked what changes he might make, Ramirez laughed and replied: "I'm going to start maybe stealing some bases. I don't go deep anymore. I just hit line drives to right field."

tim said...

Casey IBB.

LBJ coming up.

laura k said...

I was serious. I don't really know how it's different, b/c I have never been there enough to know.

If you mean pre and post WS wins, yeah, it would have to be.

Hey, even Yankee Stadium in the 80s and early 90s was really different. Super easy to get tix, much different atmosphere.

Benjamin said...

MFYs lose 1-0.

Patrick said...

No DP, LBJ PLS

tim said...

The dude abides.

Tony said...

C'mon Bellsbury!

Rob said...

Torre said he asked Ramirez how important his hair was to him and was told he'd do whatever the manager wanted. Torre said he asked Ramirez to "clean it up a little bit and make it manageable."

"I've got to cut it. I'm going to be looking like a baby," Ramirez said with a smile. "I don't want them to treat me different than the other guys. If they want me to cut it, I'll cut it. It will grow back."

tim said...

LBJ walkoff pls

Rob said...

The dude abides.

:>)

Benjamin said...

I assume you mean "gut shabbos".

laura k said...

Should we be glad he only made 1 out?

(Proclamation by the mayor - nice!)

tim said...

Drew at 3rd....laser show walk off time!

Rob said...

So now we can have a very large FUCK YEAH. Although I think they'll walk him.

Benjamin said...

In play, no out.

Jacoby Ellsbury grounds out

FY GDGD

Rob said...

Interesting they're not walking him.

They'll pay.

nixon33 said...

i mean a lot of yuppies (not that theres anything wrong with that) that really use it as a social event instead of people like us who know what the fuck is really going on

laura k said...

Oh god, what did Remy just say? "Between Team USA and Lutherania"??

Tony said...

FY PLZ!

tim said...

Gotta face Yook if they walk DP.

Benjamin said...

Well, pick your poison. Youk's 3/4 tonight.

Rob said...

Bob Geren showing the world his flabby arms.

efd said...

come on, FY!

laura k said...

Nix, yeah, I gotcha now. Same in NY, to the nth degree. One of the many things that drove me away.

Benjamin said...

Detroit has the bases loaded with two outs.

Rob said...

Well, pick your poison. Youk's 3/4 tonight.

For one night, we have FY Ortiz, and Youk Manny.

tim said...

Well, pick your poison.

Yup - and they said we wouldn't be able to use that line now that manny's gone! Fuck you giambi!

laura k said...

I know you're not saying it that way. It was so extreme there.

fuck yeah? fuck no.

free baseball!

efd said...

aw, nuts.

Patrick said...

FN!!! ARGHHHHHH HJOIGFHSGLOHGLISFHGLIFS

tim said...

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

Benjamin said...

Guess they picked right.

tim said...

heh i like this commerical..."one day...i'll play chin music for a-rod"

laura k said...

Bob Geren showing the world his flabby arms.

If you got it, flaunt it.

nixon33 said...

Oh god, what did Remy just say? "Between Team USA and Lutherania"??

HAHAHAHA I SPIT OUT MY WATER!

Benjamin said...

Sheffield squanders too.

efd said...

tigers have the bases loaded with 2 outs

Tony said...

MotherFUCKER.

Ziegler has to eventually give up a run, right? Right?

Patrick said...

PLEASE WIN! PLEASE WIN! PLEASE WIN!

I might cry if we don't.

laura k said...

Sorry Nix! I kid you not, he said Luther-ania.

efd said...

spoke too soon, Phil is on it - Sheffield groundout to end the inning.

laura k said...

You spit out your what? You are really on the wagon, eh.

tim said...

"Foul tip into the catcher's mitt" x 4

laura k said...

I've cried enough from this team this week. WIN THIS GAME

tim said...

At least this bodes well for my dreams of a Bay walk off grand slam.

Patrick said...

"Foul tip into the catcher's mitt" x 4

So four shots then? I have some catching up to do.

tim said...

Is Allan dead?

efd said...

At least this bodes well for my dreams of a Bay walk off grand slam.

But not so well for your dreams of doing well on your exam. :)

laura k said...

If he is, no one has told me yet.

laura k said...

He's following the thread, but he's locked out. It's only his blog!

nixon33 said...

ha, i am a creature of the night so i postposne my tap time til later on in the evening. i usually go to bed WAY too late, early morning.

tim said...

So four shots then? I have some catching up to do.

Hmm, I looked up the drinking game post...that one isn't in there but I think it should be. There was also a "framed by cash" so that makes 5.

And I think we've established that it's sips, not shots....because with Orsillo, you'd be tuned by about the 3rd inning if you were doing shots.

laura k said...

Let's all say stuff to piss him off while he can't say anything back.

I'll start.

What's this pitcher's W/L record?

Oh look, an A is clogging the bases.

tim said...

That's kinda weird. Fuck lowell!

Anyway, yeah that's kinda weird...blogger's been effed up this season with the conflicting edits and all.

laura k said...

Yeah, sips not shots. The DO drinking game would kill you with shots.

A & I used to just pick 3 phrases a night, and that was still a lot.

"Framed by..." should definitely be on the list.

tim said...

HAHAH there it is again!!!

that guy on deck is using frank thomas' rebar to warm up!

Tony said...

Let's Go Yankees!

How can you say Manny's that good? His batting average is under .300, for God's sake!

(/just doing my part to piss off redsock)

Patrick said...

i usually go to bed WAY too late, early morning.

me too. It's going to be hard for me to readjust when I move out to Oregon and start farming again. Waking up when I typically go to bed will be a challenge.

But there will be girls!!! <3

Rob said...

Allan, I hate Pedro.

Patrick said...

sips are wimpy. That is all.

efd said...

Jason Bay on the all-bodies-of-water team?

Along with Mickey Rivers, Brooks Robinson, ...

tim said...

Papelbon should not be in there. He has to come in when the red sox have the lead in order to save it.

Rob said...

Going to Oregon to do farming sounds very interesting to me. How are all the logistics of it going to work? You going to get paid and rent a place? Or are you staying with someone? Curious. Sounds like such a change of pace, it'd be amazing.

Benjamin said...

Longoria homer. 5-2 FKR.

laura k said...

There we go.

Joe Morgan is so intelligent. He knows so much about baseball.

Unlike those statheads in their mother's basements.

tim said...

sips are wimpy. That is all.

with a name like patrick and an occupation like farming...yeah, i suggest the shots for you.

for those of us whose livers are unable to parse a distillery's worth of booze in a night, sips are good.

Patrick said...

I sleep in a bed in the people's house. They feed me. When I was healthy I was working for them every day, up to 80 hours a week. I got no pay, and I loved every day of it.

I won't be working half that to start. They know I'm a sickly. But I'm getting better!

tim said...

The Yankees are a respectable, formidable foe.

I think this post took it too far.

laura k said...

Jason Bay on the all-bodies-of-water team?

Along with Mickey Rivers, Brooks Robinson, ...

Excellent!!

Bobby Seay (is that his 1st name)?

laura k said...

Tim Hudson
Marcus Thames

Tony said...

2-3-4 coming up. Let's close this game out and pound some Budweiser!

Or, in my case, water from the fridge.

tim said...

You got Laura rollin!

tim said...

Any player named Charles?

Benjamin said...

Orlando Hudson?

laura k said...

Patrick, you've done this in several places, right?

I have a nephew who did it in NH. The brother of the niece you won't meet.

efd said...

Bobby Seay, yup.

Ed Charles, if we're gonna get specific! :)

Tony said...

What about little-known utility man Billy Fjord?

laura k said...

Yeah, that's all it takes, an all-something team, and I'm off.

I wonder if there's been a player named Ocean. When Jere is here he uses Baseball Reference.

Patrick said...

The brother of the niece you won't meet.

LMAO.

Yeah, I've done it in Hawaii, NFLD, California, Virginia, Vermont, Oregon and Maine.

efd said...

You got Laura rollin!

Rollin' on the river, I reckon...

laura k said...

Yook is really controlling himself lately. It's amazing he's been able to make such a big change, and stick to it.

tim said...

Doug Creek

Benjamin said...

A few guys named Lake from the early 20th century.

Tony said...

Yeesh. Not Youk's all-time best AB.

laura k said...

Papi, wtf? Take a pitch or two.

tim said...

When Jere is here he uses Baseball Reference.

lol, thats what i'm on.

Rob said...

Simon Pond played 16 games for Toronto in 2004.

laura k said...

I was wondering about Creek, too.

Benjamin said...

A few Ponds.

tim said...

woooooooooooooooo

laura k said...

I think the game is to thikn of them yourself, but whatev.

OK, Lowell on!!!

Doug Pond, that's good.

Patrick said...

Bay time. Will he rise to the occasion?

Lowell ok?

Rob said...

Yeah, I've done it in Hawaii, NFLD, California, Virginia, Vermont, Oregon and Maine.

Why is it you do this for no pay?

efd said...

OK, time to capitalize on that error -- and look who's coming up?!

shit, sucks that Lowell is hurt though.

Tony said...

Time for Bay to be the hero!

laura k said...

And my Doug Pond I mean Simon.

Rob said...

That could have been an oblique.

laura k said...

Lowell hurt?

Bay's 1st chance to be a hero at Fenway.

Rob said...

But now it looks more like a hip injury. Blast.

tim said...

story of the night for papi back there, so many popouts to LF.

lowell blew a tire hustling that one out...ococ in, i guess lowrie to 3rd, cora to ss?

A Conformer said...

You have to think a lot of people wanted Bay to have a chance. Let's see what he does with it

Patrick said...

Paul Simon?!? Sweet.

Benjamin said...

Several Marshes.

laura k said...

What kind of farm in Hawaii?

It's great that you've gotten a chance to travel through farming. Makes me envious.

tim said...

here's allans chance for the DJ Werd walk off!

Rob said...

Curt Flood (56-71) and Tim Flood from the (1899-1903)

Tony said...

Well, at least we now know Bay's got a good eye.

Benjamin said...

Bay's GDGD photo reminds me a little of Olerud.

Patrick said...

I lived on a commune in Hawaii for a few months, and also a coffee farm with 100+ year old coffee trees with Jaxson Chameleons in them.

laura k said...

"Several Marshes" and "Several Lakes" do not count. Names. We need names, or how are they going to play on the team?

tim said...

Hurry this up! I'm hungry! I want tandoori chicken!

laura k said...

From the piss-Allan-off thread: one runner in scoring position and one on 1st.

tim said...

Thats sweet, patrick. Very cool.

Benjamin said...

Greg Tubbs.

tim said...

Huston Street has 18 saves this year...that must mean hes not that good

laura k said...

Curt Flood!! Very good. Wish I'd thought of that one.

Bay does look like Olerud a bit.

Loaded!!!

Rob said...

Time for some Jedi Magic.

Benjamin said...

They're dead, L. You aren't impressed by baseball-reference guys from the 1890s anyway.

tim said...

STEAL HOME!
