G111: Red Sox 12, Athletics 2

Athletics - 200 000 000 - 2 7 1
Red Sox - 504 010 02x - 12 14 0
1st inning: Pedroia single, Youkilis home run, Ortiz single, Lowell single, Bay home run. 5 batters, 5 hits, 5 runs.

It was a nine-batter, 46-pitch first inning for Eveland. He got the side in order in the second and faced four batters in the third: Lowell double, Bay walk, Drew walk, Lowrie 3-RBI double. Lenny DiNardo came on and pitched the final six innings: 6-6-3-3-2, 89, facing one less batter than Lester.

Lester (7-7-2-1-5, 100) had a first inning hiccup, when Sweeney began the game with a single, Brown bopped a hanging curve for a one-out dong, and Thomas and Ellis followed with singles. After a visit from Farrell, Lester got a double play to end the inning.

And the A's did not get another runner past first base all evening.

Youkilis hit a second home run, a 2-run shot in the eighth, his 20th of the season. All of the starters got at least one hit -- and the entire bench saw some game time.

The standings remain the same as Tampa Bay beat Detroit 9-3 and New York beat Los Angeles 8-2.

***

Dana Eveland (3.88, 101 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.17, 139 ERA+)

But first: Angels/Yankees at 3:45 PM and Tigers/Rays at 6 PM

Hoping to join this thread tonight. Have missed the last few games because a) B-fly surprised me by wanting some father / daughter time which meant wtic on in the background as we played video games etc. b) tried to get on last night before going to work but kept on getting internet explorer errors denying me access to JOS (work laptop does not have mozilla).

s1c said...

And when I say missed I don't just mean didn't get a chance to join in but missed the back and forth of the internet family known as JOS (in which I assume I am the crazy old uncle - "hey, get off my lawn").

allan said...

Sounds like a few people had that IE problem, including me. Happened mid-game.

It seems to have cleared up now. I'm using IE here at work.

allan said...

And even with the problems, we had 847 comments!

Bartman said...

Early this morning the ESPN crawl had something about the veteran players going to mgt complaining about Manny, saying they could not rely on him. I haven't seen that anywhere else, tho.

Amy said...

We are off to Boston to see the game, assuming no rain problem. I hope we get to see the game, but if not, an evening in Boston is okay with me.

Look for me in the RF seats somewhere...probably 50 rows up!

(in which I assume I am the crazy old uncle - "hey, get off my lawn").

s1c, I'm afraid those honours go to someone else.

Maybe you're the wise old uncle who tolerates all the young'uns craziness, and every so often surprises them with how much he remembers from the olden days.

Uh-oh, I see a new theme thread coming on, our family roles...

laura k said...

Yay, we have a JoS rep at the game tonight. I hope it's not rained out.

Ooo yeah! I probably wouldn't have noticed until I heard it on the radio tonight.

girls team > body-of-water team!

s1c said...

Kind words L-girl.

Sock - did you have sitemeter on your site? Am seeing elsewhere that was a possible source of the problem. What was frustrating is I was able to get to some sites (WMTC, mine) and unable to get to other sites. Just a frustrating night!!!

I did see that somewhere today. I have sitemeter as well as statcounter. As long as things are fine now, I'll keep 'em both.

Heh, I just noticed I included myself as a young'un in that comment. Hardly the case on JoS. I have to go to a retirement home to qualify for that!

snort!

So, am down in the dungeon watching the Fox love fest for the MFY's and CI. 4-2 MFY's as Weaver just gave up a single, single, non-rbi dp for CI and a Homer by Abreu.

Not to say the stache doesn't look great. Give me an effing break.

(no aborts right now, and yeah I saw the 800+ comments).

NESN has the line up:

Pedroia, 2B
Youkilis, 1B
Ortiz, DH
Lowell, 3B
Bay, LF
Drew, RF
Lowrie, SS
Varitek, C
Crisp, CF

...

Lowell in July: .215/.286/.290

Lowell since ASG: .182/.237/.200

Not a cleanup hitter at the moment, Tito.

s1c said...

Not a cleanup hitter at the moment, Tito

Got that right. Be bold Terry, you've done it in the past!!!

How about this line-up,

Drew
Ped
Ortiz
Youk
Lowell (ok, I really want Bay here but Tito won't go for it)
Bay
Jedi
Tek
LBJ (c'mon kid snap out of it)

allan said...

He'll never have Drew lead off. I don't think he'd even have him bat 2nd.

Just move Bay and Drew up to 4-5, maybe drop Tek to 9, and we're ready to rock.

s1c said...

Frag - Molina goes deep 5-2 MFY's.

s1c said...

Sock - I agree he won't have him lead off, but he did do it last year so I think he might have thought about it. Just throwing some stuff out there to see what others think. (found out why b-fly was in a dad bonding mode, boyfriend was out of town, now that he's back its the usual "hey dad can I have some money for the movies?" I knew I should have found that convent).

No dice on the game tonight. Got my exam from 6:30 - 9:30. On a fucking long weekend. Goddamn you Laurier.

Unless theres a rain delay...in which case...poor Amy. I don't need to see the game that bad.

SoSock said...

I couldn't get on to JoS at all last night. Started trying about the 5th or 6th inning, can't remember for sure. (being as I'm on the edge of senility and all)
Saw on Jere's site that he couldn't get to his own blog, although I believe that's an unrelated problem he's been dealing with for a day or two.
Yet I could get to mine, and tried a couple of others and had no problem.
Ah, technology.
So I watched the Bay era begin on GDGD and posted a rather long disposition (I know, you're shocked) on the whole Manny thing on my blog, which has been neglected entirely this whole month.
Can I possibly write a longer sentence?

laura k said...

I saw you had a new guy come and go as fast as he got here...

I think he means Spencer B. He's not really new, he's been around before.

We do have some new peeps in the gamethread, tho. One guy has been lurking long enough so he fits right in. :)

Hey, don't miss the "let's all annoy Allan" theme from last night. It starts in the 401 section. Search for "Let's all say stuff". Then it continues on into the 601s.

Skankees up 8-2 in the bottom of the 6th. Just watched an inning that ended on a line drive to Nady in LF and, as they went to commercial, they focused on WHO running off the field? Nady needed that intangibility out there to assist in the catch, I guess.

allan said...

His calm eyes guided the ball into Nady's glove.

If they made a new machine that hits into double plays.....They could have Jeter endorse it, and have it come in blazing copper....
17 on the year....ugly

Patrick said...

Who doesn't want CI? The camera men probably pull straws every day to see who gets the privilege to cover him that day.

It reminds me of when female reporters interview CI after a game and it's taking everything they've got not to lose their shit. It's so gross.

s1c said...

Ellsbury - 77

The only sub replacement that makes me wonder wtf. Personally, I think LBJ has an injury problem. It just seems like he is slower, nothing to support it but there have been some ground balls in the holes were he just seems to not be going as fast as we've seen him. If he is injured (ie a strain in the hammy, groin) then Kudos for not making excuses but if he is relative healthy then it is worrisome.

Fox is talking about Manny -

GM says that manny was worst then the steroid users. They were trying to help their teams, Manny was trying to destroy it.

Club house was different atmosphere, players were approached and they said enough is enough.

McCarver - team that will not miss manny the most is the Boston Red Sox.

Buck - Francona was just sick of it. Disgraceful in so many ways the way a guy who took 160 million just caused this.

Mo - Thank god he is gone, I won't miss him at all.

allan said...

CI is 2nd in the AL in GIDP. (Vlad had 21.)

17? Shit, even Always Lazy Manny has only 13.

s1c said...

before any who asks, the GM says was another GM that Rosenthal talked to, not Theo.

Now you are just making shit up.....Kim Jones , I actually think she is good......I have never seen a female reporter "almost lose her shit"...somethings when you type if they sound stupid they most likely are...

allan said...

GM says that manny was worst then the steroid users.

From what he has written, Gammons would totally agree with that. When the Mitchell Report came out, Gammons was livid at the people who spilled the beans about how many players did/do steroids -- NOT the guys who did the drugs.

Lyndon was going to come down to earth eventually. His September/WS stats last year were way over what he projects to be.

When you mentioned an injury, I remembered that Tito spoke to him earlier this season about not sitting out games even though he was not 100%, because everyone plays hurt to some degree.

I wonder if (a) he is bothered by something that needs attention, but (b) is wary of saying anything, both in light of the previous Tito conversation and the just-concluded Manny circus.

I believe its is wrist , hurt on a diving catch , when his hand went underneath them...

Thats why I brought it up, I agree there was no way he would be able to continue the end of last season numbers but that 77 OPS+ is a lot lower than the 95-105 range I thought he would be able to do this year.

The wrist is probably what is keeping him from getting around on the FB, but I think he his having a problem with the legs also. When was the last time he attempted a stolen base, (7/5 vs the MFY's?). 18 games ago? That is why I wonder about a leg issue.

laura k said...

Yep. And only 2 walks in 84 PAs since July 5 and a gruesome .200/.229/.238 line.

Forget about stealing. LBJ can't even get on base.

Are you fragging kidding me. Actually, he was out.

Scully solos on TV no-less!

Joe did one game alone this season, when Entercom didn't feel like sending Dale or Jon out to the west coast and Dave had an ESPN game.

Gotta wait until the morning.

Manny: I want to even buy a house in Los Angeles. My kids go to school in Miami, and I'd like them to move with me [to L.A.], but there will be no move until my future here is confirmed. I don't want to be here for two months and then end up in another city.

I told him that if the rule is to get a haircut, then I'll get one because I don't want any special privileges. But Joe replied by saying that I should get an apartment and take care of my personal stuff first, after which I should see a barber.

The thing I hate about Joe is when he gets the disappointed tone in his voice for a pop up or GIDP or whatever squander happens.

Doesn't help me follow a losing game.

Which is of course part of the problem with Arnold, not enough work in baseball to really make great jumps in improvement.

By the time you're in the majors, you should have plenty of experience. They don't hire people right out of broadcasting school.

Or do they?

But only Scully works alone. He's the master.

They said today that Yankee stadium cost 2.5 million to build and that 28 of the players in that game made more than that...

Is there a proffession in the world where the pay differs so much for doing the same thing..I know some do more than others but they are all still baseball players....As I think about it all of entertainment is like that...

allan said...

I think he'll still have the dreads, but Torre wants it cleaned up a bit. Manny said okay, it'll grow back.

It's true. It's a lot like coming up as a player - the assumption would be you come up through the minor leagues, etc. If you're only baseball. Most of these guys do multiple sports. O'Brien does college basketball in the offseason.

Dale's actually now the only person to have broadcasted games for all four of Boston's major teams. His most recent broadcasting job was home play-by-play man for the Bruins on NESN.

I'm suprised the Red Sox never asked him , or did they?

9C, it's true, there are musicians working for a share of the door, losing money on gigs, and there are musicians who are gazillionaires. And sadly it's not even based only on talent.

Actually he has lots of experience doing games. Hockey games. He has no experience doing Baseball games, which I think is a different animal all together and requires a good give and take.

As I was watching the game last night I couldn't help thinking (since I hear him all the time) that I bet John Sterling chafes at having to have a partner... I'm sure he feels like he's on Scully's level and that only his voice should be heard during Yankee games.

Rob said...

I'd think so, but he calls the game on TV like it's on the radio. You could close your eyes and follow the game.

I would be very sad to see Manny be made to cut his hair. He's a grown man, he should be able to wear his hair however he likes.

I am absolutely **astounded** that some baseball fans/people care about a player's hair!

Crap. 5 straight outs.
WE"RE DOOMED, I tell you!

Just recapped that 1st inning - nice. Hits by the first 5 batters, closed out with a dong by the newbie to get them all in.

The ass-whupping begins!

allan said...

GDGD says Bay's dong was #23. I do not like combining AL and NL stats, but I guess that point is moot with interleague play.

efd said...

Just to clarify, they were saying that Yankee Stadium cost $2.5 million to build originally in 19whatever, and that 28 players *today* are making more than that annually.

Which is kind of a useless pairing of pieces of information, imho.

laura k said...

Efd, no way. Sterling loves having a partner. It's such a big part of his game.

I know you guys hate him, but that doesn't strike me as a valid observation.

I'd think football would be different. I love seeing guys with long dreads running into a scrum. That's gotta hurt!

All players should be bald.
Put it in the CBA.
Fucking hippies ruining America.

Can't Wake hook Lowell up with a box of Just for Men....

Lowell looks cool with his salt and pepper look. It's like he's flaunting his age, I like it.

I remember when gas costs 17 cents a gallon. Seven loafs of bread was a dollar. And men didn't grow their hair like girls.

He just didn't like Steiner. Of course I don't mind Sterling its Suzyn "Oh I'm having an orgasm just seeing Clemens with George" Waldman that makes me grind my teeth.

Maybe they'd combine the stats when the home run is hit, but usually when a player changes leagues mid-season the stats start over when you see his name on the screen.

I'll be back in a few minutes - time to wolf down some food.

He doesn't strike me as someone who wants to work alone, nor would we want to split PBP time with someone else. Never heard Suzyn do pbp.

allan said...

I don't think the Red Sox cared that much. Bill James did a study -- hair style has *no* effect on creating runs. Who knew?

laura k said...

He absolutely did not like Steiner! They did not get along at all. I loved when Steiner would make some godawful stupid player-bashing "joke" and Sterling would meet it w/ total silence! Then just change the subject.

I just meant that he works with a partner and I think would prefer it that way.

Yeah I like Lowell's natural handsomness. Dude is very confidant but not arrogant.

You statheads, all you care about is run production.
