G121: Red Sox 8, Rangers 4

Rangers - 000 000 040 - 4 10 1
Red Sox - 024 020 00x - 8 12 0
Lester pitched at least seven innings for the seventh straight start (7.1-7-3-1-6, 108) and earned his 10th win in his last 10 Fenway Park starts (dating back to April 29).

Two of the three runs charged to Sid scored on a home run allowed by Mike Timlin. Justin Masterson pitched the ninth, allowing a leadoff double and a walk, but then starting a 1-6-3 double play and getting a foul pop-up.

Back-to-back two-run doubles from Kevin Youkilis and Jason Bay gave the Red Sox a nice third-inning cushion. Jed Lowrie added a two-run two-bagger in the fifth.

Yook doubled in each of his first three at-bats. Bay and Lowrie each had a single, double, walk, and 2 RBI. Dustin Pedroia doubled and singled.

The Yankees lost to the Twins 4-2 this afternoon to fall 8.5 GB Tampa Bay and 6 GB the Red Sox in the Wild Card race. ... Tampa Bay leads Oakland 1-0 in the 1st.

Luis Mendoza (7.50, 57 ERA+) / Jon Lester (3.23, 139 ERA+)

Mike Lowell has been put on the disabled list.

Terry Francona said Lowell
got looked at today, he got an MRI, and we're going to need to DL him. We're not going to know today or tomorrow the length of this. We're all hoping it'll be shorter, rather than longer ... The things that worry you with the oblique are -- you always hear the doctor say, when it stops hurting, wait a week -- because these things have a way of nagging.
David Pauley has been recalled to work out of the bullpen. Tito:
[W]e had a lot of guys throw a lot of pitches last night. The chances are that after tonight's game, if everything goes according to plan, maybe we'll make another move.
Lineup:
Drew, RF
Pedroia, 2B
Ortiz, DH
Youkilis, 3B
Bay, LF
Lowrie, SS
Casey, 1B
Varitek, C
Crisp, CF

THE YANKS LOOOOOOOOOOOOSE

Jere said...

Yanks back to 10 back in the loss column as of now. And 5.5 back of us.

Zenslinger said...

Yes, Nix, the Yanks bite the bag 4-2.

The word of the week over at RLYW (where I admittedly lurk more often when they are losing than when they're winning) is "unclutch".

One user said upon Delmon Young's 3-R HR: "Time to get in the fetal position."

Rationally, I ought to root for them against our WC rivals. But I just can't quite manage it.

Sounds like Laptop will also be sent down and start for Paw on Friday. Position player likely brought up (with Lowell out).

nixon33 said...

it took lowell to get hurt for bay to bat 5th.
LETS GO!

Tony said...

Jesus, that lineup just gets worse and worse.

The Lowell signing gets more depressing as the season wears on - ZIPS had him dead to rights (although he's been slightly better than projected, that projection wasn't fantastic to begin with), and there's no real reason to expect him to become less injury-prone or more like his 2007 season. Signing A-Rod was probably never an option, but it's hard to think that Lowell's going to pay off in '09 and '10. At least the contract isn't as horrible as, say, Giambi's or Damon's.

Pepe Lepew said...

Lowell on the DL?
John Henry should start whining about how unfair it all is.

tim said...

w00t to actually being able to watch this one (and the full one!) on real tv! first time in a while!

tim said...

Jesus, that lineup just gets worse and worse.

I don't think it's bad. Glad to see Casey in there. Right now, Casey > Lowell.

Only cog that I dislike is Ococ. And well, V-tech, but its too late to change that. And I guess his BA can be somewhat excusable for being a catcher.

tim said...

* I don't think its that bad.

nixon33 said...

whats the starting rotation going forward then?

Jere said...

I'm not depressed about the Lowell signing at all.

nixon33 said...

niether am i. if he heals up he'll still be pulling those double down the line, and making outstanding play in the field. could be worse, we could have A-rod.

nixon33 said...

(god i cant type or spell, or anything)

Jere said...

And Cash jumps on Allan's suggested # for Zink, 30. (After giving 36 to Byrd...)

Rob said...

I'll never feel bad about the Lowell signing. Not to mention that it was a bit of a deal-breaker to get Beckett as well. But Lowell has been right up there with Beckett in terms of helping the team. Too bad he's on the DL now but that was expected.

They should send a shuttle bus down to Pawtucket! They're going to need it to ship all those kids up here!

Rob said...

Michael Kay's voice is nauseating.

allan said...

I was not in favour of the 3rd year for Lowell.

i miss seeing guys named boggs hit doubles at fenway, but not THAT much

allan said...

no - if you put erin andrews's name on the screen, you have to also show her. that's a law.

Rob said...

So I turn my computer on, get ready to chat with you guys, and my sister calls and asks if I want to go for a walk. What do you mean do I want to go for a walk! The Red Sox are on!

But hey, she's my sister. Of course I'm going to go for a walk with her.

Plus, this game's on pace to end in a 0-0 tie, the game being called due to the End of the World.

nixon33 said...

come on jed, keep us loving you!

nixon33 said...

Rob said...

no - if you put erin andrews's name on the screen, you have to also show her. that's a law.

Is there any contest in your eyes between her and Heidi?

I recall reading Stephen King and Stewart O'Nan's Faithful, and King would talk about how he always enjoyed watching Jayme Parker on SportsDesk.

Rob said...

Jedi has 19 RBI since the all-star break, the most of any MLB shortstops.

Close to everyday.

time for crisp to tell the haters in no uncertain terms to stfu

He can begin by catching the ball in CF!

Jere said...

Tek stayed in that rundown quite some time...

allan said...

Maybe next inning for Ococ -- as Tek is determined to cram his head even further up his ass with his baserunning "skills".

Jere said...

Don's call was great on that.

"Varitek on the move, and they notice."

allan said...

manny does that: "space cadet cluelessly running willy nilly"

varitek does that: "gritty veteran trying to 'make something happen'"

Jere said...

hope ish brought his camera along on SisWalk'08. Pretty interesting sunset. At least down here.

efd said...

hi everyone... enjoying the relative rarity (for me) of Red Sox in HD.

NOT enjoying the LD commentary, however.

Benjamin said...

I'm usually happy when I'm "stuck with ESPN" here, because that means I actually get to watch it on cable.

allan said...

L is out tonight. With this thing on mute, I should play a CD or something........

Jere said...

Matt Dillon!

(sorry, just doing narrator-spotting)

allan said...

I'd like my rally extra cripsy, pls.

Jere said...

heck of a bunt Coco. go ahead and shoot for that every time for a while, see what happens.

allan said...

that works.

efd said...

wow, ocoC with the tih FI

Benjamin said...

I missed Tek's swing earlier. Was Drew's weaker?

allan said...

Sut lists his Top 5 AL 2B

the stats he gives:

batting average
&
errors

there are no words

Benjamin said...

Never gets old.

allan said...

I missed Tek's swing earlier. Was Drew's weaker?

No.

FYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!

allan said...

LOVIN THE LASER

Benjamin said...

Announcers assume Boggs could've thrown to second base if he'd tried.

Jere said...

make em pay, Youk

efd said...

92 coming in, 102 going out!

allan said...

Loading them up for the Sultan.

Zenslinger said...

It didn't work real well the last time they walked Ortiz...

Then again, pitching to him hasn't worked out that well either.

Benjamin said...

So basically Tek placed his bat on the ground and rolled it across the plate?

allan said...

hmmm, do we pitch to the guy who hit 2 HR last night or walk him and pitch to the guy who hit 2 HR last night?

Benjamin said...

Youk!

Jere said...

4-zip us.

uhhhhllll

allan said...

BALTIMORE DONG!

4-0

Benjamin said...

"Everyone was hoping for a double there. The Rangers were hoping for a ground ball double play. The Red Sox were hoping for a double."

Yes, those are the same.

Jere said...

"do we pitch to the guy who hit 2 HR last night or walk him and pitch to the guy who hit 2 HR last night?"

Yeah but Youk took MORE than 1 inning to get those 2 dongs last night...

Jere said...

Maybe Sut had a double earlier

allan said...

tek's swing for strike 2 resembled a poor attempt to swipe at a moth flying erratically around his head

efd said...

do we pitch to the guy who hit 2 HR last night or walk him and pitch to the guy who hit 2 HR last night?

To quote Frank Drebin, you're both right.

Benjamin said...

Yes, and those were the only hits Youk managed, last night. Wouldn't want to run the risk that Papi might homer and double in the same at bat there.

Bay!

efd said...

Scoring by the gapper of the Bay!

Jere said...

Un-Bay-licious-able-ievable!

allan said...

Lowell Who?

Benjamin said...

I'd rather have Lowell playing than Casey, but I'm pretty happy Bay's batting 5th now.

allan said...

I think Mendoza forgot his diaper.

Benjamin said...

Does Ron Washington have an eating disorder? He's really scrawny.

allan said...

SALTY BALLA!!!!!!!!

Benjamin said...

"You lose a little offense, and you lose a little defense. But you've got a veteran."

efd said...

Sutcliffe in dreamy Homer Simpson voice: "I love cereal"

Jere said...

With a possible Dustin/Dustin matchup coming up, I'd like to know: Who has the most HR lifetime against pitchers who share his first name? You have five minutes.

Actually, I'd guess Willie Mays or McCovey, since William is way more common than Barry, Henry, Babe.... oh, wait, George....just forget it.

Benjamin said...

There have been more than a few hundred players named John.

Jere said...

But who's a big alltime HR hitter named John?

allan said...

sut on hamilton and the HR derby: "talking with some of his teammates, it was almost by losing, he won even more."

fuck the heck????????????

Jere said...

YOu're saying maybe a John with 400 HR has more against other Johns than George Herman Ruth has against other Georges?

Benjamin said...

Sorry, I thought you were totalling John homers against other Johns, not homers by a single John against other Johns.

Jere said...

Johny Bench is your leading John, with 389. He may very well be the winner. Johnny Mize: 359.

efd said...

Redsock, did Erin trick you into taking off the mute? :)

Jere said...

Bench is officially a Johnny, Mize is a John.

nixon33 said...

SisWalk'08

HHAHAHA

Jere said...

okay, Phil, I see what you thought now... but by mentioning John, you've helped my cause

nixon33 said...

uh oh, gammo.

let the bashing begin!

allan said...

yes, she did. she's quite wily.

Jere said...

"Scoots!" I was getting to the point of thinking maybe I just made up that Remy used to be called Scooter/Scoots. I knew it! Thank you Gammons. None of the baseball sites show it as his nickname....

Benjamin said...

It takes a lot of chutzpa to market lemon malt liquor with homophobia.

allan said...

It takes a lot of chutzpa to market lemon malt liquor with homophobia.

Early leader for comment of the night!

Benjamin said...

I'm guessing transactional data about Johnny Mize's homers isn't available anywhere for free.

efd said...

Jere, it looks like Bench had 5 HRs off John Candelaria... that's the most off any John/Johnny if I'm reading that page right.

Jere said...

Remy, if you're gonna say "all players wanna win," please clarify on behalf of yourself and all other media that keeps telling us "Manny doesn't care about winning."

allan said...

I'm pretty sure this was last night's top comment:

Grant Salzano, 10:47:
"Wanting to make slow, yet passionate love to Dustin Pedroia does not make you gay."

Zenslinger said...

Lester's our freakin' ace. WTF more do you want?

Benjamin said...

Lester's got pierced ears?

Benjamin said...

Guess I guessed wrong.

nixon33 said...

jerry remy needs to market the "self made toupee"

Jere said...

But I mean total Johns, not just one other John. (When using John as an example.) The stat: "most HR against guys with your same first name." That's what I'm lookin' for.

I did notice that you can't get pitcher/batter matchups with Mize.

Jere said...

I see 15 John's on Bench's list--BUT, John was a "Johnny." It has to be exact first name. I really think Ruth would win.

efd said...

most HR against guys with your same first name." That's what I'm lookin' for.

Ah, ok, I get it now.

nixon33 said...

from SoSH:

HAHA

allan said...

Flo seems to have his stroke back.

Benjamin said...

Nevermind, you've got to pay for those baseball-reference event listings.

If Johnny Bench were a John, would his homeruns off Tommy John count?

allan said...

byrd is the guy that is not so keen on porn, right?

Jere said...

uhhhhllll

Benjamin said...

Youk!

allan said...

YOOK - the new Dr. Doubles!!!

3 tonight.

Benjamin said...

Yeah, Byrd is the xian fundy with the porn problem.

Jere said...

first names only. No Willie's HRing of Williams's... ha

Tony said...

Evening, everybody. I'm just saying...Youk almost has to be a top 5 MVP candidate, right?

Jere said...

Isn't Byrd the born-again who then was on the Mitchell Report?

Zenslinger said...

Yeah, Byrd is the xian fundy with the porn problem.

Didst he incur a scandal?

efd said...

I guess Byrd and Shemp don't have a lot to talk about when they get together.

allan said...

no scandal, i think he wrote a god book and railed against it.

nixon33 said...

COME ON J-LO!

9casey said...

Ron Washington = Buck Swope

Benjamin said...

Byrd has publicly discussed how he would feel hypocritical talking to teammates about Jebus while consuming porn off the field. He also got a Florida dentist to prescribe him HGH.

Jere said...

while cheating at his profession

allan said...

or was hoping to write his story. i may have to do some research,

Jere said...

ohhhh, a dentist. ok.

Benjamin said...

Jed!

Jere said...

could we possibly go up 10-0 2 straight nites?

nixon33 said...

lugo is loading his gun for his honorable suicide.

Benjamin said...

Jebus is apparently cool with HGH. Helps you recover from stigmata faster, I guess.

efd said...

Red Sox working on matching last night's run total!

Texas, not so much.

Tony said...

You are wise in the ways of the Force, Master Jedi!

allan said...

9 hits for the sox

6 doubles
3 singles

Benjamin said...

If Lugo tried to commit seppuku, he'd strike out swinging.

9casey said...

Yook headin up the MVP ladder..

allan said...

so byrd hates porn or loves it too much?

i need to keep better notes. ... and watch some porn.

...

why some xxx blog has not hung out with shemp and wrote about his collection is beyond me. (has this happened?)

Jere said...

Neither Mays nor McCovey was a William. Hurts their causes. I think that clinches it for Ruth.

Zenslinger said...

Whoa -- is he taking Mendoza OUT?

Doesn't Washington have any faith in him?

(Mendoza threw 90 pitches, by the way.)

allan said...

DISSING THE CAPTAIN?!?!?!?!?

...

PH CASH!

Tony said...

IBB? Yeesh.

Benjamin said...

Sean Casey always looks built like a tree to me. 6'4", I guess.

efd said...

I wouldn't rule out Frank Robinson as a possible contender...

nixon33 said...

VARISUCK

nixon33 said...

WOW! HAMILTON

Benjamin said...

Bleh.

Jere said...

Good call on Frank. I never knew Ken Griffey, Jr's first name was George.

allan said...

9casey said...

Everybody listen to me
And return me my ship
I'm your captain
I'm your captain

Tony said...

The bottom of the Sox lineup is almost Yankee-bad. Yeah, I went there.

Benjamin said...

We're still getting outscored tonight by the Mets.

Jere said...

tony really giving it to this lineup today. 27 runs in 15 innings, man!

Zenslinger said...

How do we know about Shemp's stash of porn?

allan said...

and maine has a 1-hitter.

Benjamin said...

If you go by middle names, then the null member wins.

Jere said...

yo no soy vlad guerrero

allan said...

zen: shemp's pron has actually been written about in time magazine!!

i think newsday also reported that HGH has piles of mags spilling out of his locker...

Benjamin said...

Time Magazine article about Matsui's porn.

efd said...

Byrd on porn (from this Oct '07 ESPN interview about his written-but-not-yet-published book):

I've had a real struggle with pornography, from before I became a Christian, when pornography was the good old American way. After I became a Christian, it really began to bother me, but God didn't really take it away. I struggle with porn one night, and somebody asks me a question about Jesus the next day in the outfield, so you feel like a hypocrite trying to share. It's the elephant in the locker room.

nixon33 said...

Benjamin said...

74 through six.

Tony said...

jere, I stand by my statement...Lowell being out of the lineup < Lowell in the lineup, although his injury mitigates that. I didn't say the lineup was BAD, however. :D

I'm developing a man-crush on Lester. All he does is go out there and pitch. It's so great to watch him and remember how much he struggled with control. It's not even the same pitcher anymore.

efd said...

Phil with the Cliff's Notes version of the pitch count.

nixon33 said...

iw onder how much john ferrall (sp?) has to do with lesters progress?

efd said...

It's a Dustin diamond right now.

Dustin's faster than Youk.

efd said...
