Red Sox - 004 000 100 01 - 6 9 0Coco Crisp's home run tied the game in the eighth, Jed Lowrie's second career dong gave the Red Sox a lead in the 11th and Manny Declarmen got the save -- though he needed 26 nerve-wracking pitches -- striking out Jose Bautista with a man on first.
Blue Jays - 200 102 000 00 - 5 9 0
Vernon Wells -- a one-man wrecking crew this weekend (6-for-9, with 3 home runs) -- hit a two-run shot in the first; he also added an RBI double in the sixth.
Burnett had made quick work of the Sox in the first two innings, throwing only 19 pitches, but Boston forced him to throw 32 pitches in the third. With one out, Burnett walked Alex Cora and Crisp, the two guys at the bottom of the order. He got Jacoby Ellsbury on a pop-up for the second out, but Dustin Pedroia blasted AJ's first pitch -- a high and inside 96-mph fastball -- to deep left for a three-run home run.
David Ortiz doubled and Kevin Youkilis singled him in and Boston led 4-2.

Nick Cafardo, Globe:
Your starting shortstop, third baseman, right fielder, and No. 1 pitcher are out with injuries. One of your young starters was so bad he had to be demoted to Double A. You lost to a division rival, 11-0, yesterday as your other top hurler, Jon Lester, was pummeled and lasted 2.1 innings. Your wild-card lead is teetering.David Ortiz:
How are you feeling right about now?
We'll be fine, bro. We go through this shit every year. At the end of the day, we'll take another ring with us.***

Every time I read something by Nick Cafardo I end up liking him even less.
That seems to be the normal reaction.
He also got in a snarky comment on Giles in this Extra Bases post: "The Sox wanted Brian Giles, but he exercised his no-trade clause so he can continue his lifestyle in San Diego."
I understand not wanting to fawn all over the players, but why do so many of these writers go out of their way to be antagonistic?
Is it, as Ofer says, they're bitter (and maybe envious) towards the people they write about?
Or do they think they're just doing their job, being "tough"?
No way to know, but I find it so irritating.
Nice answer from Papi, tho. :)
Plus, when it comes to baseball, he's dumb. Dull and completely devoid of any deeper-than-surface thinking.
In his notes columns, he writes/obsesses about the Yankees a LOT and the only GMs he seems to talk to are J.P. Ricciardi and Brian Sabean. I think he picked the Jays to finish 2nd this year simply because J.P. returns his calls/emails.
Edes's departure gave Benjamin the shot at main beat writer, which is good, but it also meant that Cafardo will hang around the Sox more often.
"the sky is....dangling," says Cafardo.
How does the sky dangle?
God, I hate the Rogers Centre. Hate, hate, hate it. Not only is it a grim and depressing place to watch a game, but the Sox always seem to suck balls there. Since the regime change in 2002, the only Sox teams with winning records in Toronto are the '02 team (the hell?) and the two WS teams. So, take that for whatever it's worth (probably not much).
A win today would be great, heading into the Toilet. Get at it!
Also, he starts his story with:
"Your starting shortstop, third baseman, right fielder, and No. 1 pitcher are out with injuries. One of your young starters ... You lost to a division rival ... as your other top hurler ... was pummeled ... Your wild-card lead is teetering.
How are you feeling right about now?
If the Red Sox were my team, I'd feel a sudden attack of agita. ...
Then six paragraphs later:
"We all got excited Friday night when Jason Varitek homered for the third straight game ... We all love Chris Smith's story of perseverance ... Now Daisuke Matsuzaka, a 15-game winner (is he really or are we making it up?) ..."

Man, up until a couple of days ago, I was convinced that TB would be getting their asses kicked a bit at the end of agust and into September.
But it seems like that team has somehow forgotten how to lose, even with serious injuries to their lineup.
Unless they go a a uber-skid like the 7-game losign streak around the all star break... I'm not so confident in the Sox taking the division away from them.
Soxfan in Fla:
Living down here I have watched them very closely. There have been a number of times that I have wondered how they would react to adversity whether it was injuries of the week long losing streak before the AS break for 2 examples. They have tons of little cross roads this season and barreled right through every damn one of them. I thought they might be in some trouble when Crawford and Longoria went down back to back. Instead Hinske and Aybar have stepped in and hit lights out and Pena has stepped and is now hitting like he was last season. Barring something completely shocking this team is winning the AL East this year. Good for them too. Great story. The people in Tampa should be ashamed of themselves that they only showed up in droves of 15-19K last week when they played 3 against the LAAAAAA. This is a great ball team that is fun to watch.

Fuckin' Rays.
Check out this quote from Pavano:
"This is what I get paid to do and this is what I'm here for. This is all I really know, to go out every fifth day and do your job."
!!!!!!!!!
As you may know, Pavano has pitched in three games (16.1 innings) since June 28, 2005.
Skydome with the roof open isn't too bad. Not great, but not awful. On the grim/depressing scale, it's not as bad as some.
MANY Jays fans are awful, tho. They don't seem to know anything about the team or even about baseball. They seem to think their job as fans is to scream at players whose names they recognize.
The constant booing of Eric Hinske is a great example. It's like they saw Red Sox fans booing Johnny Damon on TV (and other examples), so they think "we're supposed to boo former players who now play for rival teams". No matter that Hinske was traded and had no choice in the matter.
I can't believe people are still wondering if Tampa is the real deal. It's pretty obvious by now.

roof is closed. castig says there is a threat of rain. i drove past skydome an hour ago -- what threat?
Let's win today, mmm'kay?
BTW, yesterday I added something to my baseball wish-list: Carl Pavano, comeback player of the year, 18-game winner for the NY Mets. Sound good?
And yeah, a win would be good. And a long outing by Daisuke.
man, how fucking stiff is casey's neck?
Castig says Red Sox have not faced Burnett this year. Wrong. As I posted, they faced him May 1.
It's a blessing that Burnett will probably opt out. Next year the AL East could be crazy, especially if Wieters is the real deal for the Os and they add Teixeira. 5 possible contenders in the same division...
According to Pythag record, all East teams are .500 or better.
Also -- those expected W-L records have us 1.5 GA of Tampa. We are 1 under, they are 6 over.
I try not to look at that too often. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Thank god for the last two blowout losses against the BJs, then. We would've been 3 GA without it...

Why the fuck Vernon Wells only remembers he's a good player against the Sox?
oh feeble offense, please dont let this game be over in the 1st inning.
Jed's really coming back down to earth.
Why the fuck Vernon Wells only remembers he's a good player against the Sox?
Really! His bloated contract would look even worse without the Red Sox stopping by every so often.
Let's see:
2008 - .265 .409 .559
2007 - .271 .346 .443
2006 - .338 .388 .753
2005 - .227 .289 .427
2004 - .261 .288 .420
2003 - .256 .310 .474
(2008 does not include that dong.)
Does not seem to hit that well against us, actually - except for 2006, when he abused Beckett a lot.
Must be a matter of what we remember or his only hits come in tight spots.
Career vs Boston
.279 .335 .502
Yeah, I think I remember three or four 4-5 games with at least one HR, and some good catches in CF. I'll check that out between innings.
We were at one game where he hit 3 dongs, 2 off Beckett. We actually left early to catch a train, so we missed his third shot.
May 30, 2006
Glaus also hit 2 off JB that night. Bad game.
and you just KNOW the jays will fucking roll over for the rays next week in tampa.

Going back to Vernon Wells, aside from the May 30th one, you've got:
April 12, 06
April 24, 07
Sept 5, 07
And yesterday, of course.
The game you were in definitely wins the shit cake, though.
O'B calls Burnett "one of the top pitchers in all of baseball".
ERA+ this year 94.
...
Timlin: 88
MDC: 103
Aarsdma: 108
shit cake
yes -- that is an accurate description.
one of the best, but not as aawesome as aardsma.
that is a great inning by DICE
Things I Believe #174:
Someone who performs a little bit better than Timlin but not as well as Delcarmen should not be referred to as "one of the top pitchers in all of baseball".
Hey, I just tuned in (was working). Nice to see we got runs back, plus.
Devil Rays vs. White Sox on TBS.
What a weird psuedo-PDA graphic for the lineups on TBS.
The Jays announcers seem to think that Dice-K is getting away with making some bad pitches.
But -- 45 pitches through 3IP isn't bad despite the HR. I'm so tired of Sox pitching giving up runs after they take the lead that that 1-2-3 was very nice.
We were at one game where he hit 3 dongs, 2 off Beckett. We actually left early to catch a train, so we missed his third shot.
I believe we were predicting it on our way to the train.
Back to work, but at least it's work I can do while I listen.
Tek shoulda taken the ball on the knee for the team.
daniel cabrera walks the 1st two to lead off the inning. thats the kind of shit that made leo mizzoni start doing broadcasting after a year as the O's pitching coach. (yes, he still rocks back and forth while doing play by play)

But, b-but, but... 16 wins!
Anyway, it's not a fair comparison because of the IP, but the point stands.
2-run dong for Baldelli in top of first.
Anyway, it's not a fair comparison because of the IP, but the point stands.
Foooey. Well, he is still below league average.
110 for his career, though.
and a 3 run dong for johnny damon, 4-2 yanks
going out with emma for emergency preparedness family day or whatever they call it.

OK, my computer just reposted my earlier post...
Yikes, I hope LBJ is ok. That looked bad.
still sitting,
any replays helping with what happened? right eye? glasses break?
radio guys are wondering if it's eyes, chest or maybe head?
crowd cheering - i guess he stood up.
I hear cheering, he must have just stood up?
This possible injury brought to you by Oakley sunglasses. If you run into a wall, they might cut your eye.
I hope he's not hurt.
sounds like lind has hit 2 pure rockets, one to left and one to right, both caught.
We have a wedding this afternoon, so I have to get ready. I hope he's ok.
right eye, cut on eyelid?
looks like the side of his face hit the fence first. glased rammed into around his eye. looking red and puffy. don't know if there's a cut.
ugh.
This possible injury brought to you by Oakley sunglasses. If you run into a wall, they might cut your eye.
:>)
glased = glasses.
I'm amazed they'd let 'em take this much time on an injury. is tere a rule around that?
getting the contact back in now.
For those who can't see the game, his eye is all red (around his eye), no blood to be seen, but they are still talking an looking at him. He keeps squinting and blinking.
Now using eye drops. Eye looking less red also. He had lost his contact.
Remy: What are those called again?
Orsillo: Contact lenses.
great anti-ad there :)
please don't be hurt... i'll buy a volvo, will that help?
contact popped out, apparently.
sounds like lind has hit 2 pure rockets, one to left and one to right, both caught.
Yep, good over the shoulder catch by Bay, then great catch by LBJ.
Is there a time limit for injury delays?
Nix, are you serious or was a Remy spoof?
ELAINE - where's Tony?
GEORGE - oh..
KRAMER - huh..
GEORGE - Kramer was supposed to tie a knot
KRAMER - whoa ginga, you were supposed to tie the knot
ELAINE - did something happened?
GEORGE - Tony.. took a bit of a tumble
ELAINE - his face, did something happen to his face?
KRAMER - well it all depends on what you mean by.. happen
GEORGE - he..he's alive
KRAMER - yeah
ELAINE - what happened to his face, tell me, what happened to his face
GEORGE - you see he slipped, and he landed on a kinda of a..
KRAMER - rock
GEORGE - yeah.. the ambulance got there very quickly
KRAMER - some big rock
I've never heard of a time limit on a player's injury.
Still trying to get the contact in.
Boy, now I remember why I gave up on contacts!
meanwhile dicek's back is stiffening out there...
what happened to his face, tell me, what happened to his face
I can relate.
remy: this is riveting television.
as they try to put in the contact 6-7 times.
Eye definitely puffy on top.
I can relate.
That's why it's there.
He's staying in and still beautiful!
OK, off to get ready.
Same episode as "flinty" - The Stall
Hey dude, you better step off.
Jays announcers:
"Show me a team that has a low ERA, good defense and a lot of extra base hits, and they're probably succesful".
Yeah. Show me a team that doesn't give up a lot of runs and scores a lot of runs, they'll probably win a couple of games.
OK. game starting up. and I'm truly gone.
have fun all.
I've never heard of a time limit on a player's injury.
That Cuban taekwondo player at the Olympics discovered there is one in taekwondo.
Bleh.
AND WOULDN'T YOU KNOW IT --- LBJ leads off next inning!!!

aw fuck you overbay you cocknugget
He's staying in and still beautiful!

"When you're facing that cocky pitcher on the mound, and you wanna beat him as much as he wants to beat you, it will flow"
BJs announcer in an erotic book moment.
Ha ha, yeah, they were having kind of a dumb discussion about whether adrenaline can be a factor all through the year.
I'd like to know who these dinks are announcing.
Was that Buffy getting all hot and bothered?
When you're facing that cocky pitcher on the mound, and you wanna beat him as much as he wants to beat you, it will flow"
Just grip your stick with both hands and pound one into the hole ....
I think it's the other guy. It's not Rancid Boloney today...
If I can figure who is who, I think Buffy was the one saying that you can't be all amped up 162 games a year. And what Ofer transcribed was someone's reply -- I think they have three guys, Buffy the least annoying so far from what I've heard (not the whole game).
Dice -- NO walks. Only 76 pitches over 5 IP.
But 4-3's a slim margin.
You probably discussed yesterday, but shouldn't we be rooting for the Rays vs. the White Sox? We need either the WSox or the Twins to kind of fall out of it.
If he keeps this up, Varitek could end up at .230, even .235!
You probably discussed yesterday, but shouldn't we be rooting for the Rays vs. the White Sox? We need either the WSox or the Twins to kind of fall out of it.
Unless it's because of the whole heartwarming underdog story, I say no. The division race is not yet over. We're a cold streak away from first place. I will not say I expect it, but I'm hoping for it.
FUCK
Fuck.
vernon. fucking. wells.

Seemed like a standard double down the line, barely fair.
In a word, no.
We're scoring at least 3 this inning.

Where's Dale Sveum these days? Florida, per chance?
7-5 MFY.
ococ laughs at nix again. (quietly)
Shaky inning by Masterson... 3 potential XBH, but the defense keeps it tied.
routine catches dont count either, rs and l-g!
that did not sound routine
when this guy comes in and allows inherited runners, do they call it the downs syndrome?
it looked a little bit more than routine, but just a little.
routine catches dont count either, rs and l-g!
we must've been trooped. radio made it sound outstanding.
downs syndrome - toronto papers use it constantly. but only when he does well, of course.
It's funny to hear Castig call Bay "the native Canadian". In Canada that means something different. Cree, Ojibwa, Inuit, etc.
But I wouldn't expect Castig to say "Canadian-born".
Castig is very big on saying "home and native land".
Gotta hope the recent surge by the bottom of the order continues in the ninth...
susan waldman (sp? who cares) just caught a foul ball.
