Hank: Wait 'Til Next Year

Hank Steinbrenner claims he isn't writing off the 2008 season for the New York Yankees, but:
If we don't make it this year, I'm not going to explode. Injuries are a part of the game, and in 35 years since we've owned the Yankees, I've never seen a rash of injuries like this. ... It would kill any team ...

Chamberlain had become the most dominant starting pitcher in baseball and Wang has been a 19-game winner every year. You lose those two guys, it's rough. If the Red Sox lost Beckett and Lester, the whole national media would be crying about it. We lose two guys better than Beckett and Lester and you don't hear anything. ...

There's only so much you can do. ... We're going to win it next year. ... Next year we'll be extremely dangerous.
Yeah, that Joba -- he's really being flying under the radar. Fuck the heck? ... And Wang has not won 19 games "every year" (see here). ... Bonus Delusion: JtC was "the most dominant starting pitcher in baseball"?

Mr. Hankee should know that injuries are part of the game -- we all remember August 2006 in Boston -- and a competent front office with $200 million to play with every freakin' year should be able to weather a majority of storms with a minimum of whining.

Red Sox players on DL in 2008: David Ortiz, Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling, Mike Lowell, Tim Wakefield, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Clay Buchholz, Julio Lugo, Alex Cora, Brandon Moss, Sean Casey, Bartolo Colon, David Aardsma, and Mike Timlin (twice).

And down in Tampa, Scott Kazmir, Rocco Baldelli, Carlos Pena, Matt Garza, and Dioner Navarro (and several others) have missed time and the team is now without both Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria.

But let's all have a good cry about the unfortunate and singled-out-to-be-picked-on-by-the-Injury-Fairy Yankees. ... But next year, when everyone is yet another year older, they'll be totally awesome!

But the real question is this: After admitting his biggest beef with the Mitchell Report was that not enough Boston players were named, throwing a fit over the idea of "Red Sox Nation", and then swearing to not talk about the Boston team again this season -- is Hank capable of uttering a single quote without mentioning the Red Sox?

Color me unsurprised: this was the team that was whining about their injury quotient as the '06 Red Sox literally fell apart under the weight of their injuries. And Hank is a douche. An amusing douche, but a douche none-the-less.

Funny how when you look at the statistics - you know, the facts? - Joba's name doesn't seem to appear in the top 5. Or in the top 10. Or in the top...?

Color me unsurprised... And Hank is a douche.

Now there's some surprising news!

Joba Chamberlin is the most dominant 4 and 3 pitcher with twelve career starts in the majors, I'll give him that. His WHIP is barely over 1.2!

I am so happy a guy who knows nothing about baseball is running our biggest rival.

Why doesn't Hank ask the Colorado Rockies about a rash of injuries ruining your season...oh wait, it's not like they made the WS last year or anything.

Not defending Hank - why even bother? - but he's quoted differently on Wang's 19-win seasons elsewhere. I don't know if there's a transcript elsewhere of his remarks, or if he said two slightly different things at different points.

The word here is DEPTH. The Yankees do not have it. Any team that blames the loss of their season does not have depth. What do they Red Sox do when Wakefield goes on the DL and Buchholz can hit everything but the strike zone? They go out and they MAKE A DEAL! They acquire a veteran starting pitcher who is lighting it up after the all-star break! They also look into their GOOD farm system for help as well.

What do they Yankees do? Aside from selling the farm to rent a guy for a couple of months who only adds to the logjam of players at, say, 1B or DH. Or, they whine about it and say they'll get C.C. Sabathia or Ben Sheets next year.

Advantage Boston and Tampa.
