G132: Rays 8, Red Sox 5

Red Sox - 010 200 110 - 5 6 1
Rays - 131 000 03x - 8 12 0
Beckett (6-7-5-0-9, 104) continued with his uncanny John Smoltz impersonation. Beckett did retire ten of his last 11 batters, but he had dug his teammates a 5-1 hole by then.

They clawed back, though. In the fourth, Victor Martinez walked, Kevin Youkilis doubled, David Ortiz grounded out (5-2) J.D. Drew singled (5-3). In the seventh, Alex Gonzalez doubled and Martinez singled him home (5-4).

A trio of Tampa pitchers gave the Red Sox the tying run in the eighth. There were 33 pitches thrown in the inning, but none of them were put into play by Boston batters. Three walks loaded the bases and a wild pitch brought in the run that knotted the score at 5-5.

And only five pitches into the home half of the eighth, Tampa had regained a three-run lead. Ramon Ramirez, who had pitched a perfect seventh, allowed a double to Carlos Pena and an RBI single to Pat Burrell. Manny Delcarmen came in and his first pitch was crushed to deep left by Evan Longoria.

Martinez drew a one-out walk in the ninth, but Boston went quietly.

(At one point, five consecutive Boston batters were pitched to by five different Tampa relievers:
Garza - Martinez RBI single in 7th
Bradford - Youkilis F9 to end 7th
Choate - Ortiz BB to start 8th
Springer - Bay K, Gathright PR/SB
Balfour - Drew BB, Kotchman BB
Howell - WP, Gonzalez K, Ellsbury K to end 8th
The Yankees beat the Orioles 10-2 (with a seven-run top of the 9th) and the Rangers beat the Blue Jays 6-4. Boston is now 7.5 GB in the East and 2.5 GA in the Wild Card.
Example
Josh Beckett (3.80, 125 ERA+) / Matt Garza (3.95, 116 ERA+)

Dear Josh: You have a 9.82 ERA in your last three starts. In those games, 18.1 innings of work, you have allowed 10 home runs and opponents have a 1.106 OPS. This is completely unacceptable. If you are not hurt, as everyone insists, then kindly get your head out of your ass at once and start pitching properly. Thank you.

Also: Yankees/Orioles at 7 and Blue Jays/Rangers at 8.

Maybe he forgot to take his dose of peyote from the magic cactus for the last 3 games.

If you are in the mood to see something funny, check this out. If you are drinking something, be sure to put it down first to prevent a choking fit.

tim said...

I wasn't drinking but that article is driving me to the bottle. JHC.

Zenslinger said...

No shit. Sarah Palin has more business taking over Ted Kennedy's seat than Curt Schilling.

Ugh -- let me rethink that. That's one of those horrible questions. Like asking a man who is 100% straight, "If you had to choose one, who would you rather fuck, Barbara Bush or Brad Pitt?"

I would take Brad Pitt. How bad can it be?

Don't answer.

Zenslinger said...

Apparently, Rangers' 3B'er Young is hurt, out for two weeks. Not a bad thing for us.

Patrick said...

Furthermore, Beckett, I absolutely hate losing to ADHD spit face Garza.

Today you must sack up.

Zenslinger said...

With a win today, I would consider TB to be more or less vanquished.

laura k said...

Ugh, I can't thread tonight because I have to continue to get ready for our trip while watching the game. I ran out of steam earlier and had to quit.

Luckily I have a Pomtini and a Mudshot to console me. We're in vacation mode!

laura k said...

If you are in the mood to see something funny, check this out. If you are drinking something, be sure to put it down first to prevent a choking fit.

Thank you for the warning! Wouldn't want to waste my Pomtini.

What a maroon.

Anyone have a connection to two tickets for a game on Thurs 10/1 against the Spiders? Am in town on business briefly, and am contemplating catching the game.

Zenslinger said...

Here's to vacation mode!

Kazmir having a rough first inning with his new team (single, single, HBP).

Zenslinger said...

Pomtini. So, Pom prune juice and...vodka, I guess. Shake with ice, serve in an old fruit jar?

Sounds interesting. A lot would ride on what your ratio is there.

Zenslinger said...

Yankee/Red Sox killer Kazmir recovers by striking out the side.

allan said...

It's pre-mixed in a bottle, so whatever the standard % is.

allan said...

espn , so we got sox radio

sox lineup brought to us by jack daniels!!!

allan said...

what is there, 540 people there tonight?

Zenslinger said...

Has anyone been to the Trop?

Is it the case that it's just such a bad or uncomfortable place to be that people don't want to go? Awful when your team is contending and people don't show up.

laura k said...

It is awful. I think we have to factor in huge unemployment and foreclosures in Florida. I know they never drew really well, but when people are really struggling, they can't go to baseball games.

allan said...

soshers down there say that public transportation is next to non-existent to the park. so that keeps people away.

laura k said...

Yeah, a premixed treat. It has grape juice, pomegranite juice, vodka and a little sugar. It would be better if I made it myself, but it was an impulse buy.

Actually, an impulse buy courtesy of Tim and Stephanie! Those crazy kids.

A Conformer said...

Nice curve there.

Zenslinger said...

Public transportation is next to nonexistent in the whole state. It's often said that if you see someone walking along a road, it's because they must have run out of gas. This is not too much of an exaggeration.

allan said...

just carried and carried, wind blowing out?

Zenslinger said...

Ha. Either that or the long ball is just seeking out our dear Josh.

A Conformer said...

just carried and carried, wind blowing out?

My thoughts exactly.

And another very nice curve. I hope Crawford's dong doesn't mean we're getting last two weeks' Beckett.

Patrick said...

A very Beckett inning.

A Conformer said...

A klanman, but with a dong.

tim said...

Whoa whoa whoa - the LCBO gift card was used to purchase POMTINIS?!

COME ON!

laura k said...

Pomtinis and Woody's Coolers and Mudshake shots!!! And you thought we were classy!

I promise when you come over for dinner we'll have some decent wine. But for pre-vacation mode, the Pomtinis looked so tempting!

tim said...

Here comes the legend of the magic cactus myth again.

Zenslinger said...

the ugliest fucking park I have ever seen.

Since they don't play baseball at Candlestick anymore, I see your point.

Amy said...

Evening, all. So Josh didn't listen to Allan and gave up a HR already, but our guys are hitting the ball. So far, so good.

allan said...

Oh right, Alcatraz. I forgot about that.

allan said...

A Conformer said...

laura k said...

SASAHE

I'm not even watching but I knew what that was.

Pomtini is second to cosmo for me. I like the sourness of the cranberry and lime juice better. But a pomegranate martini comes close, if made strong and not too sweet.

tim said...

*SASAHE - WHATEVER!

I can never get that one right.

Amy said...

I think this is the ugliest park in MLB, especially now that the Toronto park has been somewhat improved. That rug gives me the creeps.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH HIM?????

laura k said...

WTF BECKETT WTF

laura k said...

And since the Metrodome is about to be demolished.

How are you, Amy? Settling in?

I'm in and out of the tread but I will try to come back for your answer. :)

Zenslinger said...

I'm thinking:

"2-2. Burrell better not homer to left."

Then:

"Burrell homered to left."

tim said...

Amy, calling the skydome a "park" is a disservice to all outdoor areas of grass and trees.

Mrs.GotRibe said...

tim said...

Fuck this shit. Fucking ratface.

Amy said...

I do not like this version of Beckett.

Good point, Tim. I will instead call it a 1970s rec room.

BECKETT, YOU SUCK.

tim said...

what the HELL is wrong with our fuckin ACE!?

Mrs.GotRibe said...

But, but, but, the captain is catching. How can this be?

Jeff Polman said...

We won't be winning this one with pitching, that's for sure.

At least we're hitting now. We'll have to put up a 7 spot next inning.

You have no idea how pimped out he is. To the max!

allan said...

i want to fight him for the zorro flash intro on his site. he must have a meth lab in that trailer or something if he thinks that's cool

Patrick said...

LMAO! That Zaun sight is amazing! I think we can fill in Gregg Zaun for all Chuck Norris jokes from here on in.

Dinosaurs looked a Zaun the wrong way...once!

tim said...

He lives with Joba's mom?

laura k said...

Yeah, that Zaun website is something else. Allan and I laughed about for a loooong time one night.

But there are two Barbara Bushes, grandmother and granddaughter. Not to be crude or nuttin' but there's nothing wrong with Bush the junior at all--barring her last name.

Benjamin said...

So yesterday we got playoff Tito. When do we get playoff Beckett?

Man, I would love to see a large dominican dong right about now.

allan said...

how about a pasty white canadian dong?

...
ah never mind

A Conformer said...

A burning dong, maybe? Pretty please?

Amy said...

I will take any dong right now...from the Red Sox.

allan said...

man, john rish does NOT stop talking when he does PBP. jeez.

A Conformer said...

Haha, shifty run.

Rob said...

I was hoping Rish would be an upgrade from Glenn Geffer. I'm not so sure.

Patrick said...

BP 5IP 3H 1BB 0R 1WTF

Amy said...

Only a two run gap now.

Come on, Tek. DO SOMETHING.

A Conformer said...

I will take any dong right now...from the Red Sox.

Bla bla bla 10 foot pole.

allan said...

someone should tell rish that it's okay to go more than 0.8 seconds without yakking.

A Conformer said...

Yep. The magic cactus is not hitting well because he's too smart and intangibly.

Amy said...

LOL, Ofer. It seems I will be stuck with that one for a while.

WOW, Tek got on base! OK, just a BB, but he did not make an out!!

A Conformer said...

Fuck, that looked nice off the bat.

Amy said...

Orsillo, you gave me false hope. NOT nice.

Unknown said...

well, you have to understand how he feels, noone else could possibly know as much about the game of baseball as rish does, so he's trying to serve you up some knowledge ( even though he's really just blabbering like a fucking retard)

allan said...

he is also making stuff up a la sterling.

pitches that are outside are actually just low. he said that there was some question whether drew's hit would roll out of the infield. that is a lie. it was hit fairly well.

Amy said...

Who is this Rish you all are talking about? A Tampa announcer?

Patrick said...

Rish and Castig sounding like old men, complaining about the noise (even though it's quiet).

laura k said...

Rish does Red Sox radio. Usually he just gives the scoreboard, but when O'Brien is not there, he fills in. Tonight O'B is on ESPN.

laura k said...

I think all radio announcers sound like old men no matter how old they are. They're always complaining about the weather, how late they got in, how tiring the schedule is.

Amy said...

Thanks, Laura. Guess I have not heard him, just OB and Castig on the radio, and that annoying Glenn guy.

laura k said...

Hey Scott, you are new to gamethreads? Welcome. Are you the proverbial long-time reader, first-time threader?

Amy said...

First game I am watching on our new TV, which arrived today. Very cool. But it doesn't make Beckett look any better.

laura k said...

Amy, you've undoubtedly heard him give out of town scores. His name just probably never registered.

I must force myself on to the next task now. Must finish before I completely run out of energy.

laura k said...

Oo, the new TV! What did you end up getting?

A Conformer said...

56

laura k said...

Nice throw, Zorro.

Benjamin said...

Is the audio on anyone else's NESN commercials completely garbled like mine? The in-game broadcast audio is fine, but all the commercials and promos have some terrible reverb.

Patrick said...

BP: 6IP 4H 1BB 1K 1WTF?

Is the NL THAT much different? He is facing the Phillies.

Bah.

allan said...

Benjamin said...

TIZ = POTENTIAL GO-AHEAD RUN

In 2007 :(

laura k said...

Is the audio on anyone else's NESN commercials completely garbled like mine?

Wish I could answer that.

laura k said...

If I didn't know better, I'd think Amy was ignoring me.

Amy said...

We got the plasma, 42 inches. Not huge, but big enough for us. It's a nice clear picture. So far, so good.

A Conformer said...

What the hell was that 3-girl ass shot there?

Amy said...

I would NEVER ignore you. Just a bit distracted. We still have so much to do around here. Sitting and watching a game feels so good, but I keep thinking of things I need to do!

Amy said...

As for Rish, yeah, the name meant nothing to me. As usual, I tend not to pay close attention to the non-players. On the radio it is even harder since there is no visual cue as to who is speaking. I always recognize Castig's voice though.

laura k said...

I know that. :)

Earlier I asked how you are and if you're settling in. Still very busy, obviously!

42" plasma sounds great. Big without being completely obnoxious.

Amy said...

Sorry I missed your earlier question. I am lucky I can keep track of the game. Today I stayed home to "do work" and ended up almost falling asleep as I read. So I just got up and did more unpacking.

Man, Tek ALMOST had it out.

Amy said...

But we love the house and are starting to settle in. Sitting down to watch a game feels almost decadent!

Rob said...

Brad Penny has a four-hit shutout through 7 against the Phillies - 84 pitches so far.

...Why can't we get guys like that!??

allan said...

rish has twice said an outfielder caught a ball "shy of the warning track"

the first one was 20-25 feet "shy", that one to LBJ was maybe 40 feet.

Unknown said...

i almost hate it when the game is on espn, i usually have to watch on mlb.tv which doesnt quite give me the picture i get on espn hd, but i dont have to deal with espn announcers. they black out the nesn broadcast when it's on tv

laura k said...

I'm glad you love the house!

Moving sucks. So much work.

A Conformer said...

Lyndon is putting up a clinic in CF.

laura k said...

Another nice catch from My Boy!

Yeah, ESPN always has exclusive for out of market. We have Red Sox radio on MLB Audio to avoid the ESPN announcers.

Unknown said...

I get home and I have two immediate thoughts

Lyndon is an awesome center fielder

Beckett is still sucking

allan said...

feels like 8-2 to me, but it is only 5-3.

very very winnable. but we need run(s).

Unknown said...

And fucking Penny is firing a shutout

Amy said...

Huh, I didn't even know the game was on ESPN. I guess NESN is not blocked out in all markets. Where are you watching, Scott?

Amy said...

LBJ sure is showing his stuff out in the field these days. Magical.

Unknown said...

Sea Bass!

allan said...

SEABASS shall lead us.

Unknown said...

SEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAZBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

A Conformer said...

Sea Bass keeps impersonating a big league hitter. Nice.

allan said...

beckett sans jacket on the bench. may be ramram in the 7th

laura k said...

Yeah, Lyndon has been amazing out there. He is such a fun player to watch. I mean besides other reasons to enjoy watching him.

Unknown said...

amy im in new jersey, grew up in new hampshire but i cant get nesn down here

A Conformer said...

Texas is in the lead, 4-3. Let's win tonight, eh?

laura k said...

Where are you in NJ, Scott? Just curious as much of my family lives there.

Amy said...

Oh, I thought you said the NESN broadcast was blacked out for you when ESPN had the game.

Where in NJ?

Amy said...

Can we please score some runs? Even just ONE run? Please?

Unknown said...

near philly. nesn broadcast is blacked out for me, i normally watch it over the internet with mlb.tv, but if it's available on tv for you locally, you cant get it on mlb.tv

laura k said...

NESN blacked out on MLB TV

A Conformer said...

Motherfucker, 3 hard hit balls in the inning and we might end up with nothing to show for it.

I want my extra-mart.

allan said...

don't waste the double.

laura k said...

Scott, your first gamethread here?

Amy said...

OK, now I get it. The NESN broadcast is what is shown on MLBtv normally. I should have understood that, but feeling dense tonight.

Unknown said...

Blue Light RBI

allan said...

blue fuckin' light special.

Unknown said...

Finally into their pen

laura k said...

I don't know if you all are aware of this, but

WE ARE GOING TO WIN THIS GAME

laura k said...

Anyone have an update on the various birds against our various rivals? I can't open another tab right now.

Amy said...

Boy, that deal for Martinez looks better and better.

Unknown said...

not first but first in a while L-girl. mlb.tv isnt bad usually, they let you pick between the home and away broadcast of both tv and radio, but they check your ip and find out your location, i think t's some kind of deal with the cable companies so that they can have the service and dont steal viewers

Unknown said...

Baltimore and Toronto are still being useless.

laura k said...

Yes, it's a deal with the cable and internet providers. Some law firms I worked at did contracts like that, it's insanely complicated.

I must have missed your thread debut, then. I usually remember names of gamethreaders - forever. :)

allan said...

you need the premium to choose feeds, though. basic mlbtv will not get that, you get whatever feed they choose. like ei, not always nesn.

Amy said...

That sounds right, Scott. I should have known...my husband watches all the Yankee games on MLB.com and gets blocked out if we are in the NY market. I am spoiled, getting to watch almost all games on regular cable tv, so I forget how MLBtv works, despite the fact that it is running on his laptop right now in the next room!

Unknown said...

One run deficit

We can easily do this

laura k said...

Useless, yes, but do you have scores?

andy said...

Schilling for Senator? WTF?

Unknown said...

it could have been quite a while i like to look at these posts, but usually im watching on mlb.tv fullscreen on my pc, so i cant use computer at the same time, so it's a rarity

Why can't we get pitchers like that?

laura k said...

That's why when the Sox are in Toronto, we watch Buffyvision (aka local broadcast) and/or have MLB Audio.

Amy said...

Yeah, does Schilling really think he can replace Ted Kennedy in ANY way? Does he think the people of Massachusetts are stupid enough to vote for him just because of his bloody sock?

I am glad I don't have to cheer for him any more on the field.

A Conformer said...

That Pizza Hut ad jackpot guy is extremely annoying. Why would they think that would sell?

Unknown said...

3-2 MFY over Baltimore, Bottom 8th

(it had been 3-1, so they're at least trying not to be useless)

5-3 Texas over Toronto, Bottom 6th

laura k said...

Plus I'm never here on Wedsnesdays (except for tonight). So if a new gamethreader shows up on a Weds...

A Conformer said...

Why can't we get pitchers like that?

Why can't we get rivals like that? The NL does wonders for your pitching career.

Unknown said...

that's jim brueher(sp?) in the pizza hut commercials, he's funny usually, but i also couldnt believe he was willing to appear in that kind of commercial it's awful

Unknown said...

"Why can't we get rivals like that? The NL does wonders for your pitching career."

Smartest thing the Brewers ever did was move to the NL

laura k said...

The NL does wonders for your pitching career.

As the radio announcers have been repeating all night. It's tonight's radio obsession.
