G151: Red Sox 9, Royals 2

Red Sox - 000 060 003 - 9 12 0
Royals - 000 200 000 - 2 12 0
With one out in the fifth, and the Royals having just taken a 2-0 lead, J.D. Drew singled to left. He would be the first of eight consecutive Boston batters to reach base off Hochevar.

Alex Gonzalez singled to right, Jacoby Ellsbury tripled to left-center, tying the game at 2-2. Dustin Pedroia singled, giving him a 15-game hitting streak and putting the Sox up 3-2. Victor Martinez extended his streak to 22 games with a single to center. Kevin Youkilis walked, loading the bases. Jason Bay hit a first-pitch single to left, scoring two runs. David Ortiz followed with a first-pitch single down the right field line for the sixth run of the inning.

Mike Lowell had grounded out to short to begin the fifth. Now, as the tenth man to bat, he grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the rally. A reader named Dan left a comment on my 3 Outs In An Inning post from April:
Mike Lowell came close to making all three outs in the same inning tonight ... he was responsible for all three outs (although he did not represent all three). Has this happened before?
What Lowell did was not all that unique. Now if he had made only the second out, and then the same eight Sox reached safely and then Lowell ended the inning with a third out in his third AB -- that would have been a first in major league history.

Beckett (6-12-2-1-7, 103) allowed a season-high 12 hits, but he stranded two Royals in each of the first four innings. And he was helped by a caught stealing in the fourth. After Martinez threw out David DeJesus, the next two batters singled, but were both left on base. His only perfect inning was the fifth.

Ortiz clocked a three-run dong to right-center in the ninth.
Example
Josh Beckett (3.80, 124 ERA+) / Luke Hochevar (5.79, 75 ERA+)

6.

That is the magic number for both the Red Sox to eliminate the Rangers for the wild card and for the Yankees (who clinched a playoff spot last night) to win the AL East.

Pitchers for this weekend in New York:
Friday: Jon Lester / CC Sabathia
Saturday: Daisuke Matsuzaka / Joba Chamberlain
Sunday: Paul Byrd / Andy Pettitte
Out West: Yankees/Angels at 3:30 and Rangers/A's at 10.

Red Sox Fan Released From Jail To Attend Game

A judge in Iowa has allowed a man to be temporarily released from jail so he can go see the Boston Red Sox play the Kansas City Royals.

Randy Aaron Barker, of Keosauqua, Iowa, was serving a 10-day jail sentence for interference with official acts and violation of a protective order. He is also a big fan of the Boston Red Sox, KCCI.com reported.

Saying baseball games are among the "few pleasures" Barker has in his life, his attorney said Barker had long-term plans to attend Wednesday's game with his father and brother.

The judge said the request was "reasonable under the circumstances" and granted the request.

Win It For Randy!

Zenslinger said...

Angels had them some chances, too. 10 hits, 2 runs.

Rob said...

I don't know what's more surprising... Yankees taking 2/3 from the Angels or the Red Sox dropping the first 2 to KC.

tim said...

Fuckin' V-Mart behind the plate!

This lack of cactus zen is responsible for the two baserunners!

nick said...

Now if only NESN would show Randy in the crowd.

One one level I appreciate the judge's leniency and it was only a 10 day trip, but violation of a protective order and interference with official acts could be some notable unpleasantness. I missed out on things for a lot less. Missing one game may be acceptable as consequence of his actions.

(I, of course, speak knowing nothing of what he did or the circumstances)

allan said...

jump on one, doc

nick said...

Show us your Fire and it's Onness!

nick said...

fuck. Off Fire!

allan said...

seabass says "no, no no-no!"

Amy said...

Hi, all. Looks like another quiet night in JOSville. Perhaps this quiet here is responsible for the Sox losses in KC so far. Where has everyone gone? Resting up for the post-season?

I know I have just been busier, so I am finding it hard to type while watching or listening to games.

allan said...

Dunno. Hope all is back to normal for ALDS1 (or even the MFY on Friday).

nick said...

Emma was complaining that lately all I want to do is watch baseball on friday nights. She wants to watch a movie. In this corner fatherly love, weighing in at bucketfuls, and in this corner freakin' Sox-MFY!, weighing in at oh man. hmm....

I think we may be out saturday. we'll see how it goes.

allan said...

she needs to get online and join the thread! it's non-stop fun and laffs!

allan said...

just explain that there is baseball season and there is movie season. six months of each.

Patrick said...

I'm not appreciating this 0 for red sox runs.

Punks need to sip some green tea.

nick said...

I like the seasons approach. I'll broach it friday.

There's also a really cool noise show in albany that night, starting at 5! that'd I'd love to go to--take her for noise and turkish food. what could be better?

mmm... turkish food.

allan said...

i'm sad no one commented about that video of george brett talking about shitting his pants.

nick said...

Emma likes looking over my shoulder at the list. she might enjoy sitting at a second laptop next to me. That being said, I still censor (obscure) a bit for her. Wouldn't expect you guys to behave any different. I fully expect some sailoring during that series.

allan said...

what is a noise show? just people bangin' on shit???

nick said...

word on that stankin' zank. 3 outs here and then blow out the top of the fifth.

allan said...

yeah, friday might be rough sailing. tomorrow will likely be calm!

nick said...

uh.... I just made up zank. then I googled it. According to urbandictionary.com it is "a name given to describe unusally large testicles." with the following example:

His balls were named zank because if each of DooDoo's legs could touch the top of each twin tower then even ants by the ground could catch a good swing.

not exactly what I meant.

fuck. run.

Patrick said...

This series fucking sucks.

The Royals have shit all over my dreams.

allan said...

FUCK Yu(nesky).

nick said...

what is a noise show? just people bangin' on shit???

basically. could mean lots of things, though. droning, clanging, electronic, organic, etc. Here's the description for friday's thing:

Constant rotating 10 minute sets --- Tape manipulation and electronics from G. Lucas Crane (Nonhorse and Woods) and Eric Hardiman (Rambutan, Burnt Hills, Century Plants), guitar improv, vocals and feedback loops from Ray Hare (Fossils From the Sun, Burnt Hills, Century Plants), circuit bent and homemade electronic wizardy from Pete Edwards, modified electric banjo and electronics from Holland Hopson, and improvised percussion and electronics from Matt Weston. Video projections by Jason Cosco.

nick said...

royals shitting like george brett.

tim said...

This commenter wonders how much acid is dropped at your average, run of the mill 'noise show'...

tim said...

I did want to comment on the george brett vid, but only got a minute into it before i had to go out somewhere. I will watch it in between innings.

allan said...

quick sets is a great idea. you might hear some cool shit and anything that you hate will be gone soon. i like it.

now beckett, i'm not liking. will he be gone in 10 minutes?

nick said...

let's see cactus do that...

tim said...

BEEEE-U-TEE!

tim said...

What is turkish food? I'm assuming its what I know as Mediterranean - gyros and all that.

tim said...

Fuck train has been derailed. Ugh.

Patrick said...

fak

nick said...

"Did you do a lot of acid, Miller, back in the hippy days?"

I haven't noticed it of late. Seems like acid's been fairly low on the scene for a decade or so now. Far as I know, but I'm not really hep to what folks are doing these days. I'd guess mostly pot and pills and the old standby of alcohol in quantity.

WTF with the hits? (uh, no pun intended)

Amy said...

God damn it! WTF is wrong with Beckett? And why can't our hitters score runs?

Amy said...

Noise show sounds like instant headache....

allan said...

... unlike this shit show?

tim said...

I haven't heard much about acid. I think the big thing is E...then there's the old classics like cocaine and crystal meth?

No fucking idea about the drug trade.

And I didn't mention pot because its not a drug ;-)

Amy said...

This shit show is instant headache and stomach ache.

allan said...

Time to slam the door of Hochevar's Witnesses.

(...no good?)

tim said...

I wanna see some zank-sized dongs right now.

Anonymous said...

We are losing to the Royals.

Their offense is crushing us.

Yuniesky FUCKING Betancourt, who is like the worst starting player EVER, got a triple.

When did it all go wrong?

Also--a belated fuck you very much to Paul Byrd. He was a bad idea last year, so why did we think he'd be better a year removed from baseball?

tim said...

Took me a while there, redsock...

Still unsure - was that a Jehovah's Witnesses parody?

allan said...

yes it was.

OF!

tim said...

Take that, Yuniesky!

allan said...

then again, if we lose tonight, tomorrow's thread may not be all puppy dogs and lemondrops after all.

allan said...

calling seabass dong

tim said...

My turn...

I wonder how many wrong number calls this KC pitcher gets from pimps looking for grooming services for their ladies...

allan said...

instead -- a "jeter" special.

tim said...

bases-clearing
game-tying
stinking-stanking
ho-shaving
laura-loving
TRIPLE TIME!

Patrick said...

HELL YES!!!!!!!!

allan said...

that's her boy!

tim said...

told ya.

Amy said...

Finally, something GOOD happens.

nick said...

Turkish food is pretty similar to Greek--though neither will readily admit it--and some middle eastern stuff: stuffed grape leaves, baba ganoush, hummus, tzadiki, meats, vegetables, interesting cold salads.

The gyros (doner - umlaut on the o)are so much better than most of the stuff we call that. bread baked to order in the a brick oven, meat shaved off the spit...yum!

I spent a semester in college in Istanbul. There's a good, authentic Turkish restaurant in Troy. When I did a radio show out there I'd go 'bout every week. Now it's catch as catch can.

nick said...

hmmm... this is nice.

tim said...

FUCK YEAH!!!!!!

allan said...

meat shaved off the spit...yum!

shaving is everywhere!

Anonymous said...

Thank you for being a motherfucking hero Jacoby.

Now if only I wasn't still morbidly depressed by the fact that our ace has given KC 10 hits in 4 innings.

sarcasm/ Oh, and I'm REALLY looking forward to Byrd pitching in Homer Park, NY. /sarcasm

allan said...

KC TV talking about some slumping team (the Tigers, I think):

"It's not just the losing, it's the complete lack of winning."

tim said...

Yup, sounds like Greek to me! All delicious food that I enjoy. I always wondered what the difference between gyros and doner was, basically the same stuff then eh? Hmm.

Well, let's continue this, shall we V-Mart?

Why thank you.

Yook, you're next. Oblige if you may.

nick said...

Here's what I don't understand. I don't follow the minors closely enough, but we don't have any remotely decent pitchers in the minors? like remotely better than Tyrd?

tim said...

I'm still giddy with myself for calling that triple.

allan said...

Nice to see the Sox bats "Awake" this inning!

(more JW "humor")

tim said...

Sweaty balls. Four of em.

nick said...

ouzo = raki (this time without the dot on the i)...there's paralells for everything.

There's a greek counter place here in Great Barrington that has decent gyros (best around), but still not as good as the turkish ones.

More runs!!!!

Amy said...

This is more like it!

Patrick said...

This is more how I pictured this series.

tim said...

BOO YEAH! JETERIAN STYLE!

nick said...

good quote there RS. I've got to run and do radio again.

tim said...

PAPI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tim said...

lol, V-Marte warming for KC.

tim said...

ugh.

doctor being kevorkian.

andy said...

To Baseball Reference we go to see if Lowell is anything special with his 123 inning.

Anonymous said...

Good inning.

Nice having this shit go right for us for once.

Fucking KC.

allan said...

not so rare for lowell.

i don't count that as him making all 3 outs since forcing ortiz was one of them.

now if he made the first out, eight guys reached, he made the second one, and the next eight reach, and THEN he ended the inning -- that would be unprecedented.

Amy said...

Before the other night, I would have felt confident with a 6-2 lead over KC. Not so any more.

nick said...

y'all got quiet! I've got the GDGD on while I radiorock. game inching along.

tim said...

this thread really fizzled out during the 6 run inning :(

what kind of radio are you doing, nick?

nick said...

noise! :-)

Here's what I've played so far:
jefferson airplane - white rabbit (mono)
abunai! - barbara allen
asteroid #4 - egyptians and druids
spirit - red light roll on
sly & the family stone - into my own thing
the politicians - psycha-soula-funkadelic
hawkwind - the psychedelic warlods (disappear in smoke)

it is gonna get noisier, though.

nick said...

uh.... warlords. psychedelic warlords.

tim said...

wild shit.

allan said...

the most amazing thing about that set list is that amy can say she has heard of two of the bands!

tim said...

...thats all that i can say i know of! jefferson airplane and sly... i just googled a few of the others to see what they are.

allan said...

i know of hawkwind.

allan said...

OH, callaspo, i sing to your spirits ....

Amy said...

Yes, Sly and the Family Stone (my sophomore year in college they were HUGE) and Jefferson Airplane (that one takes me back to high school).

The rest?? NOT A CLUE!

Rob said...

I have been horrible at game threading lately. This will change by the time ALDS1 comes around.

tim said...

I'm pumped as hell for October. Picked out the TV I'm getting and went to check it out at the store today. What a beauty! Can't wait to be watching the Sox on that rather than my dinky slingbox stream!

I even tested the 'mute' button on the remote in preparation for dumb and mcdumber on fox.

allan said...

you think teahen and teagarden have ever met for coffee?

tim said...

you think teahen and teagarden have ever met for coffee?

I literally lol'd. Well, more of a chuckle.

Rob said...

Teagarden: Hey. You know, your last name sounds like how I pronounce mine when I'm drunk.

allan said...

yeah, it'll be sox radio for us all thru the playoffs.

chip caray will be murder (again) if he gets the Sox/LAAAAAAAA series.

allan said...

WE'RE GONNA TOP 100 COMMENTS!!!!

tim said...

omg. i forgot about them. the other buck that sucks! martinez!

"David ORR-tiz..."

SoSock said...

Woo, woo.
1st time I've gotten home before the game's over since before Rosh Hashana.
And I knew a 3rd band on the list!
Well, mostly that 1 song by Astreoid 4, not much of anything else. My son had some of their music and that was on a mix thing he put together or me.
Beckett handling KC. As it should be.
Can we please sweep the MFY regardless of whether it affects the race?

tim said...

100!

nick said...

SoSock totally wins with the Asteroid #4!

I'm getting psyched for October baseball, but it also means it's all gonna end for another year. What am I gonna do, hang out with my kid?

tim said...

I gotta say, I AM looking forward to seeing what kind of outrageous jackets obvious hairpiece announcer dude has found in his grandpappy's closet and busts out for the broadcast.

nick said...

oh, and I'm totally down with sweeping the MFY. yup.

allan said...

what was that guy's name?

allan said...

woodward sighting!!!

tim said...

although that might ruin the TV with the HD and 120hz....guess i'll be picking up the extended warranty.

as for his name......good Q.

SoSock said...

It IS a little strange to be stoked about breaking 100.

That time of year I guess. I myself have been doing the music scene heavy around here lately. Not even coaching a fall team this year. Very weird.

tim said...

Just went to their website, any network that gives George Lopez his own sitcom deserves to be shut down immediately.

CRAIG SAGER, there it is.

SoSock said...

mmmmm.....Billy Wags Willie

nick said...

Craig Sager. I remember him. hmm.. yes. In high def to boot, tim! awesome!

I just played the wrong song. a 10 minute wrong song. at 5 minutes to the top of the hour. Do I interrupt for a station ID? does this count as program continuity? Since the last 5 minutes sound like the first do I just fade it out and go on to something else? OTH, OTH.

allan said...

meh - do the ID at 5 after.

allan said...

you can't fade it out, it might be someone's favourite song!

tim said...

Can you just do the station ID overtop of the song during a lull in the lyrics?

SoSock said...

My thoughts essackly!
There are songs about which I would I would have a kaniption fit if they were interrupted.
Almost like coitus interruptus.

tim said...

Tex up 4-0 if anyone gives a shit.

nick said...

no lyrics. just motorik drums and phasy layered distorted guitars for 10 minutes. there was a drum roll the start the second half right at 11pm! epicker and epicker!

I meant to play a zappa song, instead I played another Faust track--one called "krautrock" that I was going to play a bit later.

one of the guys from Faust was a high school exchange student in Schenectady in '68. It might be his first time back.

tim said...

hahaha sosock, coitus interruptus. i love it.

Amy said...

Did you get a tv with HD, Tim? We have our first HD tv. It's quite cool.

Amy said...

Nick, is that more noise? :)

allan said...

PAPI SAYS HELLO!

Amy said...

Papi! Lots of insurance now!

tim said...

BIG FUCKING DONG! HELLS YEAH!

SoSock said...

PapIIIIIIIII!

allan said...

flo bringin' some noise - he calls it "clout rock"

tim said...

Amy, I've done a fair bit bit of research and went to look at it today. I've been living without any TV since January, so its time to step it up with NFL and NHL starting up and most of all, OCTOBER!

The picture on this thing is phenomenal, can't wait to buy it and set it up with the HD cable.

So you guys are liking yours?

---

We are rollin'!

tim said...

time for your seabass dong, allan.

nick said...

"clout rock" -- excellent!

now playing live improvised banjo and electronics.

I think it's reasonably safe to say we might win one in Kansas City.

Amy said...

At least we won't be swept.

SoSock said...

Who's "closing" tonight?

allan said...

SNUFFER

Amy said...

We really love the picture, especially for baseball! (Of course, Harv has not see any Yankee games yet, so this weekend will be his first chance since he watches the Yankees on his laptop.)

nick said...

I'm rooting for Harvey (to keep in good humors as he watches the yankees dee-stroyed in glorious high def).

tim said...

LOL amy, rightly so. no point in muckin' up the picture of a nice new TV with ugly ass pinstripes!

Amy said...

Perhaps I am also threading less because it is harder to turn away from the picture.

SoSock said...

Nick - re Banjo.
The banjo player for my favorite local band and new running buds, Big Daddy Love, just bought himself a new electric banjo. It is suuuuwheet! Sounds almost like a piano at times. They play mostly their own stuff, but have added Bela Fleck's "Big Country" just for the occasion. Closed with it Monday. It just sends me.

Amy said...

I am not sure I want to see all the pores in the skin of the Yankees!

Zenslinger said...

Sorry to be tardy, but --

LARGE PATERNAL MEMBER!

allan said...

And we won't be swept in KC!!!

The water is Muddy!!!

SoSock said...

I am not sure I want to see all the pores in the skin of the Yankees!

LOL - a scary thought indeed

Amy said...

Dirty mid-west water.

Amy said...

Good night, everybody!

allan said...

I am not sure I want to see all the pores in the skin of the Yankees!

Shemp'll give you nightmares all winter.

SoSock said...
