Red Sox - 000 102 020 - 5 8 0Lester left the game in the third inning after being hit on the right knee (or the inside of the right knee) by Melky Cabrera. He was able to walk off the field on his own. X-rays were negative and Lester has a contusion on his right quad.
Yankees - 104 102 10x - 9 14 0
Lester (2.1-8-5-3-3, 78) had a rough outing from his very first pitch, which Derek Jeter grounded into center field.
Victor Martinez homered in the fourth to extend his hitting streak to 24 games. (Chamberlain had retired the first 11 Boston batters.) Ortiz hit a two-run bomb in the sixth.Jon Lester (3.33, 142 ERA+) / Joba Chamberlain (4.73, 94 ERA+)
Since May 31, Jon Lester has a 2.13 ERA, better than every major league pitcher except Felix Hernandez (1.99) over that time period.
5.5 GB with 10 games to play. Common sense says the Red Sox will not storm back and win the East (Baseball Prospectus puts the Sox's chances of doing so at 1.1%), but it remains possible.
Since August 10, when they were swept by the Yankees in a four-game series in New York, the Red Sox are 29-13 -- the best record in baseball over that span. At 91-61, Boston has the 3rd best record in baseball, after the Yankees (97-56) and Dodgers (92-61).
With Boston's Wild Card magic number at 3, the Red Sox could be the first team to pop champagne at the new Yankee Stadium. David Ortiz: "So we don't have to get our clubhouse dirty."
&: Rays/Rangers at 8.

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 355 of 355I can't imagine how much that hurts! It hit him directly off the bat, not slowed down or deflected by anything. Must be excruciating.
OK, just to be predictable...
WHO THE HELL IS HUNTER JONES?
OH FUCK NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
/Please God nothing torn or broken.
Wow, over 200 this early in the game. Must be the Yankees.
Amy, we can set our clocks by you. :)
Yes, and threads have been slow or nonexistent lately.
Yeah, consistency is definitely one of my "virtues."
Ok Hunter Jones, my new favourite pitcher, let's mow them down.
he walked off by himself, limping. that rules out a lot of very bad things.
(eck does not seem to know this. he thinks his leg could be broken.)
long wait for jobber.
Maybe Lester's knee will become the Schilling's ankle of 2009.
Eck is fixated on the fact that the ball came back towards home plate, meaning it must have hit his kneecap. Given how little Eck knows about English grammar, I cannot imagine he knows anything about physics or medicine.
I'd be willing to bet quite a bit of money that Jeter will steal second in this at bat.
So...who IS Hunter Jones (she says very meekishly and quietly)? A minor leaguer we brought up from somewhere, I assume?
OK, DO tells me. Pawsox.
"WHO THE HELL IS HUNTER JONES?"
He's a less shitty version of Javier Lopez.
DO answering all my questions.
thank dog that inning is finally over.
now

Is that a joke I missed or did Allan just paste all that in with the wrong name?
that is his birth name.
Oh, very good. Like Larry Jones.
shouldn't tek be the "offensive plasyer" of every week?
no-body knock on wood, and craig sager always has funky suits/shirts/ties.......i wonder who dresses him?
Oh come on NESN, no need to show the line score like we're actually in suspense about a no-no.

Here we go! yoooooook
more hitting with 2 outs
Hey, it's one of our standard-issue two-out rallies.
Guess maybe that 30 minute wait got to Joba. Or maybe he's worried about getting hit in the kneecap.
flo needs to go all 2004 on 'em here.
he has officially changed it now.
OK, so it didn't turn out to be a huge rally. But we've hit him now. More like that please.
And go Hunter Jones, my new favourite pitcher (tonight).
Bowden up
bowden up

Gotta head home. Try to enjoy the rest of the game...

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
alright, guys, stop talking about nascar, we got a game to win.
drewble!
fire.
Can we PH for Tek in the 5th inning?
I want to.
nice at-bat, cactus
Well, that was fucking predictable.
Fuck you, you worthless cactus.
boooooooooooooooo
2 men on and he hacks away
i didn't notice if it was SASAHE or just SAS
Ugh
don't waste this, lbj.
squanderiffic
You've got to be fucking kidding me...
LOB-otomy.
You know, I understand the loss of faith, even affection, for Tek. And I certainly agree that he has outlived much of his usefulness here. But the guy has served the team well for many years---why the hatred??
for me, it's frustration at having him in the lineup as much as he is. it's knowing there will be an out as he's walking to the plate. (and hearing how great he is at stuff that is impossible to measure (so who really knoiws?) only pisses me off more.)
i guess we should see him as the back-up now and simply expect what we expected from kevin cash.
Bowden K's the side
SCORE RUNS
CI fanned on purpose to help Joba get back on the mound. CI knew it was the right time for the inning to end. So he gave himself up for the team. That's why he is the greatest human ever.
Or Bowden totally smoked his ass with a fastball.
One or the other.
Speaking for only myself, I don't hate Tek, but I was never very attached to him, always felt he was somewhat over-rated.
Add to that his terrible performance for the past 3 years, maybe 4, and I don't have any positive feeling for him at all. I won't say hate, that's too strong, but I resent that he his contributions to the team are all negative.
ESPN chat yesterday:
Bones (Boston): When Brad Penny went to SF, he said he liked Molina calling more breaking balls early in counts. Obviously, many Boston writers either fainted on the spot and/or were outraged. Is it possible the Captain DOESN'T know everything?
Keith Law: Varitek is a lousy game-caller and has been for years. I'm pretty sure he lost his thumb, middle, ring, and pinky fingers on his right hand, since he calls for so many fastballs.
***
ouch.
I wouldn't be nearly as frustrated with Tek if he were actually treated like a backup catcher. But he's still getting almost half the starts at catcher, and Tito doesn't PH for him nearly often enough.
Also, he's sucked way more lately than earlier in the year, so the dramatic suckage is more prominent in our minds.
Went to the gym and saw Lester get hit while on an elliptical. That was hard to watch, but it shows you just how strong he is. He made sure to not put any weight on it as he lowered himself to the ground - he made sure to only use his left leg.
there is a decent case to be made to leave him off the playoff roster. he cannot hit and he cannot throw.
if he is not good enough to start -- and he's not -- what can he do? pinch-hit?!?!!?
i'll be furious if he gets a start against the angels.
but there is no way in hell the sox leave him behind, even for the alds.
Way to work the count...
Well, the anger should be directed at Francona and/or the front office for continuing to use Tek as much as they do.
Now I know that if I were not a Tek fan, I would be on his case just like all of you, just as I was all over Timlin and Gagne and others when they were useless. I just feel badly for the guy. Clearly he does not want to be sucking at his job.
ALL RIGHT, PAPI!!
PAPI DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree re Tito and the FO. Tek can't help it.
FLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The best case for not leaving Tek off the playoff roster is that Kottaras isn't any better offensively, and Tek has more experience.
FLO!!!
east shit, joba.
No one wants to suck at their job. Timlin, Gagne, Renteria. But when a player sucks, it's the player that draws the heat, as you say.
Or west shit, Joba.
well, i see tek in the lineup in the afternoon and i get pissed at tito, not tek.
why not play kot or brown for a game?
When I see Tek in the lineup, I get pissed at Tito.
When I see Tek at the plate, I get pissed at Tek.
east west north south shit joba
You know what? We are going to continue to creep up... then creep right past them. And win the game.
Cactus...
another one...
Do they always steal bases like this? Somehow I don't remember it from prior games this season.
I think that's the first ball hit to that area that didn't carry out.
re tek: that must have been the worstest divorce in history.
it's a free base -- why not take
it?
even when he throws, runners are safe 92% of the time.
Ugh
*sigh*
Could we please get out of this inning right NOW???
This game is frustrating...
fuck
I have to get away from the computer.
Keep the faith.
Stupid Shemp, but nevertheless, we are down 5 runs again.
don't worry - mdc will shut 'em down.
Delcarmen in, looks like we've given up on this game
Heh, you two had quite different reactions to MDC coming in!
i was rolling my eyes.
Thank you for actually pitching well, MDC

Sigh.
TBR: 003 000
TEX: 210 110
Oh, no, the GBA guy.
If Tek goes 0 for his next 16, his average will be below .200
Eck STILL insisting it was Lester's knee. Eck---better eyes than an x-ray machine.
sweet curve.
Or 4 for his next 36
Note that right now he's 4 for his last 42.
Eck obviously got his medical degree from Frist University.
Yeah, they're probably going to get to 8
Ugh...
So how did we beat this team a bazillion times in a row before the ASB? Were they that much worse, or was our team that much better?
This is damn depressing.
it all evens out.
Red Sox have thrown 204 pitches in 7 innings!
ALIVE!
WTF LBJ?
Blue-light single!
we need the sultan.
kill this rally, yook! kill it good!
Don't be raising our hopes.
1-out rally time?
tiz dong can make it 9-7.
We still have a chance
we need to creep a bit faster than our current pace.
Oh great, the AAA team is on the field...
Ah. See this is the Playoff Assassin Tito we all know and love...
Anderson, Gathright, Lowrie, Woodward and Kotchman?
Fucking offensive POWERHOUSE!
Who else thinks they steal here?
Like that.
Or is that DI
DI
Somehow Varitek is going to be allowed to hit for himself this inning.
I just know it.
I think Varitek is indifferent every time they steal on him.
Rico BBaldy
And look, Varitek is somehow being allowed to hit here.
WHY?!?!?!?!
'cuz he gets to hit RH?
didn't expect that.
Entirely predictable
Ugh
Clean water
Time to listen to Fall Out Boy with the lights out
bah
time to wrap up work and get home.
had my one comment of the game! didn't miss much by the looks of it. balls game.
looked like a solid thread, full of anti tekitism, wish i could've joined in but had to be a socialite tonight. caught score updates and part of the game at a friend's house but other than that was in a dead zone about what was happening at the toilet.
get em tomorrow. and october.
ahh! damn you evil tim!
