Sox Reach Agreement With Bartolo Colon

ESPN:
The Boston Red Sox have reached preliminary agreement on a minor league contract with right-hander Bartolo Colon, a source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

If he makes the Opening Day roster, Colon would provide rotation insurance for Boston, which will be without Curt Schilling ...

Colon suffered through an injury-marred 2007 for the Los Angeles Angels, posting a 6-8 record and a 6.34 ERA -- the worst of his career.
Small risk, possible reward. Why not?

I'm just curious why another team didn't make this move. Colon has been out there for a long time and there are numerous other teams that need pitching. Good deal by Theo for sure, but sometimes you have to wonder about the competition's competence level.

I'm sure other teams pursued him and he hasn't been right since '05............seems more like a project than insurance i.e. Wade Miller ,granted Colon has had a better career but hasn't been the same since he ate that small village.....

This is a classic move from the Dan Duquette playbook, with the odds against it paying off being---what,5-1? 7-1? Steve Avery and Ramon Martinez come to mind. (Duke's one clear success with this kind of gamble: Bret Saberhagen.) Theo whiffed when he tried it with Wade Miller.

I never liked Colon much when he was at his peak, and last year he looked cooked. But it's a defensible tactic for sure.

But, this is a minor league contract. Add a little bit of depth and if he's still not well, then he's still not well. I don't see anything wrong with this move as long as it's a minor league deal.

It would be strange seeing Bartolo Colon pitching in AAA, though. But that's what happens.

Maybe he can box Curt and Papi out at the buffet line. That'd be worth something.

It is starnge that teams with less in there current staffs didnlt take a flyer on Colon.

If he gets the chance to start in the majors, it means we're in big trouble... and if he grabs a win or 2 it will be worth the measly million bucks...

My biggest fear? He accidentally eats Dustin Pedroia...

I guess I don't think it's all that strange that other teams didn't bite---somebody must be giving Theo different readings than the other teams are getting. Colon looks washed up. The Globe says he might coast on his finesse---what finesse? the big deal with Colon was that he threw 100 mph. The more I think about it the more pointless it seems--a worse bet than Jason Johnson, for example. And if he DOES eat Dustin, there will be hell to pay...

HAHAH!

Although, it's not fair to call Papi fat. The guy is a monster, to be sure. He makes Willy Mo look normal, but I think he's in good shape.

Curt could've used a Bartolo, or a Cabrera stealing his dessert the past 4 seasons.

Bartolo has to pass his physical for the deal to be finalized. Presumably the tests will include a Colonoscopy.

Okay, Theo, admit you really got the guy as a psychological experiment to watch the evolution of jokes among Red Sox fans upon finding out the team got a fat dude named Colon.

I'm just waiting for someone to point out that between Bartolo and Lester, out rotation's got colon cancer. Ironically, many people who find that funny would be fans of another rotation tandem plus our right fielder, Dice/Clay, an' Drew.

Given that Bartolo has been much diminished by arm woes, it's clear that that he is not a question mark, but rather a Semi-Colon.

Theo on Bartolo:

"On an out clause in his contract: "There is. There is one day, but I don't want to reveal it. That gives us ample time to get him into shape and fully evaluate him."

Let's try to figure out what Theo isn't revealing....

One K = One slider at White Castle?
One W = something involving a combination of the words "buffet" and "free"
Perfect game = 12 hours at a restaurant, no questions asked

Thoughts?
