G132: Yankees 5, Red Sox 3

Distance to the RF pole at Yankee Stadium? 314 feet. Distance of Johnny Damon's two-run, tie-breaking home-run in the seventh inning? 315 feet.

New York got two runs in the first off Dice, the second on coming on a double by Jorge Posada. After that hit, Matsuzaka retired 12 of the next 13 batters -- and the Red Sox tied it up. Manny Ramirez hit a solo shot to right in the second and Julio Lugo tripled and scored on David Ortiz's fly ball to left in the third.

The teams' captains traded solo home runs (Derek Jeter in the 5th, Jason Varitek in the 7th) before Damon gave the MFY a 5-3 lead.

Facing Joba Chamberlain in the 8th, Kevin Youkilis walked and, with two outs, Mike Lowell singled. But JD Drew fanned against the Hut. Mariano Rivera set down Varitek (K), Coco Crisp (K) and Lugo (L4) in the ninth with a problem.

This was a game the Yankees had to win -- and they did. Nothing to do but brush this one aside -- which is easy, knowing it's August 29 and we have a seven-game lead -- and get ready to humiliate Fat Billy tomorrow.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.76, 120 ERA+) / Andy Pettitte (3.69, 116 ERA+)

Stats 'n stuff.

Da. Ortiz 37 - 0.324/0.378/0.500
J. D. Drew 15 - 0.429/0.467/0.929

Oh! Tim, enjoy the beach. We just got back from the outer banks. So very nice. I'm stuck with YES here. Gotta work a NESN scam one of these years.

Mmmm... steak. Excellent idea. I'm craving pizza myself. Pizza, beer, baseball. What could be better?

Rob said...

Well I just took a two-hour long nap after a long (too long) day, but I'm ready to go!

8. Andy Phillips, 1B

It's funny, last night both Sterling and Kay were trumpeting the Yankee lineup, talking about how it was their best offensive lineup, they need to stick with it for every game for the rest of the season, they need to score runs, win games, etc.

Wonder what they'll have to say tonight about Giambi on the bench. I guess they can score zero runs without him...

Rob said...

There goes the hole on the right side...

:P One of the Globe writers (never heard of him before) jotted down the lineups in the "Extra Bases" blog and wrote "Miguel Cabrera" batting ninth.

How are we doing in the "emotional" standings? I haven't checked those in awhile.

I think he is one of the Globe interns this year.

Hmmm, we should probably ask Susan W. about that!

Hi all, I won't be in the game thread today, but I'm here - allowing your comments to go through as quickly as I can.

"Enjoy the game!"

"Buenas noches, amigos!"

Any hockey fans here tonight? Do you know a former player, Ron Ellis, played for Leafs on their last Stanley Cup team? His nephew had dinner here tonight. My niece and her b/f are here for the week, the b/f plays hockey and one of his friends came down from Barrie, "an Ellis". Big hockey family I guess.

He grew up in New Hampshire but is not esp a Red Sox fan (not into baseball). Oh well.

allan said...

i approve of this sox lineup

Scoring this one by hand tonight.

My penmanship blows. I don't find myself needing to write by hand much.

Zenslinger said...

Ah, shit. I got "My 9" on mlb.tv.

bennymac said...

gameday!!!!!!!! i hate working nights.

s1c said...

Well it would have been nice to see them work him a little bit.

Six pitch innings don't do the Sox any favors.

allan said...

sorry about that, zen.

3 outs on only 7 pitches.

shut 'em down, dice !

bennymac said...

you gotta love technology. gameday now shows a pitch tracer, lists the pitch speed to a tenth of a mph, and shows the break and angle of the pitch. it's ridiculous. this may not be new, but i've never seen gameday do this before. i know, i'm easily amused.

allan said...

fuck you ump. that was a K to abreu.

allan said...

benny, some parks have that, so we see it, some don't.

Ron said...

How I loathe Bobby Abreu.

Does he have a nickname? Does he even deserve one?

Rob said...

Normally I would approve of an A-Rod HBP, but not so much when it loads the bases.

allan said...

slappy acting hurt. idiot.

fuck -- abreu had k'd.

dp pls.

Rob said...

A-Rod went in there pretty hard, didn't he? I hope they get that out of them. No beanball tonight.

allan said...

MFY 1-0.

agggggggg ... the season's over. it's the end. the yankees always win. sox always choke. boo hoooo

s1c said...

Cousins is a squeezer. As for the Gameday - I think that is from the Qstec parks that you can get that info.

A good stat from baseball musings David Pinto - The Boston pen posts a 2.93 ERA, while the Yankees are at 4.06. That's a higher ERA than the Boston starters.

Fragging shemp

bennymac said...

can't tell from gameday if that had double play potential.

Zenslinger said...

A lot of crap from these My9 dorks about "sending a message" after A-Rod's beaning by his hard slide into 2nd. As if he wouldn't have gone in hard otherwise.

R-Diddy said...

Hi all. Hopefully this is Dice K's "bad inning" and he recovers to pitch well. A couple of runs shouldn't win this game.

dumbo double.

could have been a dp, but slappy wasn't held so he got a lead and went in hard. lugo leapt straight up and fired, but it was late and wild, yook dove to the rf side to save it.

redsock: "andy phillips?"

Zenslinger said...

Commentary from Girardi about why Matsuzaka threw the ball the ump asked for to the screen. "Was he trying to show Damon up? I don't know. It was very strange."

It was also very obvious Varitek was fooling with his equipment. M. just got sick of waiting for him to receive the ball so he tossed it out of play.

allan said...

slugo gapper to lcf. milk dud kicks it to the wall, easy triple.

allan said...

tucan pitches: 7-25-22 = 54
dice pitches: 26-11 = 37

Rob said...

54 pitches (33 strikes) for Pettitte through 3.

Jere said...

I don't know what made me more frustrated, the fact that they gave Dustin the green light or that he still couldn't hit a fly ball to tie the game. That inning could've been a lot more if he takes a walk. Glad we tied it though.

Rob said...

I was puzzled by the 3-0 green lighter as well.

Jere said...

Number of times Yankee fans cheered because scoreboard/sound effects told them to in first inning: 15.

Number of times Red Sox fans cheered because scoreboard/sound effects told them to since 1912: 0.

allan said...

hey, jere, was manny's hr a short porch toilet cheapie?

:>)

s1c said...

Fast ball hitter will usually get the green light on 3-0 pitches. He hit it up the middle, just not hard enough to get over pettitte.

Jere said...

NESN right on that squirrel, but misses a throw to first by Tek.

Not that I'm not amused by the squirrel:)

Rob said...

I never knew how much info is crammed into these media guides. I printed the Red Sox game notes... 9 pages of very tiny text!

There's a squirrel on top of the right field foul pole. Went down onto the screen, and now is going back up. John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman... THERE he is! They're wondering if the squirrel is scared.

Sterling: Well, I'm not a squirrelologist, so I have no idea. You know what they say, Red Sox/Yankees games are always nuts.

ba dum bum.

Jere said...

Are you kidding, I love it when they have to deal with the other team reaching their short porch... that was a rocket shot, though.

thatdietcokegirl said...

i love the cat av's. i think i'm gonna be a copycat (a-hah!) and find one too ;)

Rob said...

Fast ball hitter will usually get the green light on 3-0 pitches. He hit it up the middle, just not hard enough to get over pettitte.

Good point. :)

Jere said...

"Fast ball hitter will usually get the green light on 3-0 pitches. He hit it up the middle, just not hard enough to get over pettitte."

With tying run on third, ESPECIALLY if you know you're getting a fast ball right down the middle (3-0 count), you should be able to get that run in with a fly ball. Sometimes I wonder if these guys are even thinking about this stuff. But Dustin seemed pretty pissed.

Rob said...

Doc, give me a double shot.

Rob said...

Single works. :)

Unknown said...

WRKO reports that Lowell is over .500 during a 10 game hitting streak. All that and inching us closer to the bullpen, too.

Spencer Brown said...

Drew is just a black hole in that batting order.

Amy said...

drew annoys me

Rob said...

Drew came into tonight's play batting .429 against Pettitte with 2 home runs (6 for 14)

Unknown said...

J.D. is becoming an embarrassment to Drews everywhere. ;-p

Spencer Brown said...

BTW watching the MLB.TV feed which is the MY9NY (WWOR) channel. These announcers are like 20x better than the Red Sox announcers. They actually seem intelligent, and say interesting stuff -- fleshing out the game with pertinent information.

Rob said...

Cano... little glance out to the mound...

allan said...

brown: who are they?

allan said...

canoe: learn the game.

0-2, the next one is often inside

Spencer Brown said...

Golly, that mean, hard look Cano gave to DiceK after the brushback sure intimidated him, didn't it? That is scary stuff.

Rob said...

On the list of things you probably shouldn't say on the radio, I'd say this is near the top:

"You gotta see this." -Suzyn Waldman

Rob said...

good inning from dice-san.

Amy said...

Finally a K!

allan said...

since dumbo's double, dice has retired 10 of 11 (non-out was a BB).

Spencer Brown said...

The WWOR announcers just said they are Michael Kay and Joe Giordi (sp?).

allan said...

Those are the YES guys (on channel 9). ... Kay is the fucking worst person you want to listen to for a Sox gam.

s1c said...

Drew is just a black hole in that batting order.

During the month of August - J.D.

.324 /.400 /.479

allan said...

why look at that. jeter can't get the roller to his right.

Rob said...

Joe Girardi's a good announcer but I've heard a lot of complaints about Michael Kay. I haven't heard him much at all, though.

Seeing eye for the Dust man. Good night so far for him, eh?

Rob said...

That's one thing about Jeter. He's lost a ton of range, especially into the hole. There are plays he dives at and misses that most guys don't dive at and get.

allan said...

kevin seems a tad perturbed.

allan said...

He's lost a ton of range

You can't lose what you never had.

Rob said...

Radio has the count 1-2
NESN has the count 2-1

Fans were cheering waiting for the strikeout and then they changed the count. Heh.

allan said...

mfy fans too fucking stupid to remember the last 3 pitches.

R-Diddy said...

Well, if Papi is going to K at least he tried to take out a few Yankee fans. Might as well make the K somewhat productive.

s1c said...

unusual sox - yankees game 1/2 done and only 1:40 minutes played.

Rob said...

The Yankee fans desperately want someone to get beaned. One person said Pedoria should get beaned for the tumbling play in the second inning. Strange people.

Amy said...

Wow, that bat went flying...pretty scary.

Sarah Haendler said...

Wow. Commentary from the YES guys now about what a great guy Steinbrenner is. Honestly. I could mute but I like to hear the crowd too much.

allan said...

sarah: he signs their checks, so they love him. that's the rule.

Rob said...

Pettitte had two straight innings of 17 pitches (10 strikes). Interesting things that generally mean nothing, though 17 pitches isn't very economical. Up to 88 now through 5.

Sarah Haendler said...

Oh boo.

Rob said...

Well it's not a Red Sox/Yankees series without a Jeter dong. No worries, mates.

allan said...

CI did not homer in the 2004 ALCS.

...

I wanna pound the Hut -- bad!!!

Sarah Haendler said...

RE: signed checks, yeah, I know it, but it doesn't make it any more enjoyable to listen to! Actually, the part that entertained me was the way they acted as though they were in trouble for talking about him as a good guy - that the reason you don't see that in the media is that he doesn't like it!

Sarah Haendler said...

No, ish, not worried at all! I liked that the my9 fan blog question today was, "Is it still possible for the Yankees to catch the Red Sox." (paraphrased)

Rob said...

Jeter has 19 home runs against the Red Sox. Posada has 27, Giambi has 30, and A-Rod has 36.

Rob said...

Get ready for some Yankee bullpen feasting. Pettitte's at 101 pitches. He'll probably finish the inning.

thatdietcokegirl said...

1-2-3 dice, c'mon.

thatdietcokegirl said...

cameron diaz looking hot ;) but she's prolly a yankee fan (loser)

Amy said...

So Drew is supposed to hit well against Pettite??? Not tonight.

s1c said...

And Drew's career high of GIDP keeps on growing (9).

smithnyiu said...

My God I hate JD Drew. I hated him when he held out for a bigger contract as a rookie, and now we're stuck with this loser. Every single time he comes up, I think automatic out, and he NEVER lets me down.

allan said...

Drew: 9 GIDP

Ortiz: 14 GIDP

Rob said...

Strange play... Not sure anyone thought Posada was going to second. single, E7

allan said...

I think automatic out, and he NEVER lets me down.

His average and OBP is .000?

Huh.

thatdietcokegirl said...

gah, leave drew alone lol ;p

s1c said...

I would expect Papi to have more gdp's. After all, it is not like he has blazing speed :).

laura k said...

I know, enough with the Drew hating.

Rob said...

Looks like Pettitte's getting another inning.

Pettitte, Joba the Hut, then Rivera. Well, best get the run off Pettitte.

thatdietcokegirl said...

TAKE A SEAT.

Cano SASAHE!

Amy said...

OK, let's go ahead here and spare Dice K a loss. Where are all those bats we had in Chicago? (OK, it was Chicago, but still....)

s1c said...

Looks like another fragging game where Daisuke gets minimal run support and the second straight game where he makes one bad pitch that ends up in the bleachers.
