G110: Red Sox 4, Mariners 3

Dice for seven and then Dimmer and Snuffer to nail it down. From a distance, that's how it looked, but upon closer inspection, it wasn't quite as smooth as it should have been.

Matsuzaka (7-6-2-2-10) allowed two solo home runs (while getting out of serious jams in the third and fourth innings) and left with a 4-2 lead. Gagne retired the first two Mariners in the eighth, but then allowed singles to Broussard (who stole second) and Lopez to bring Seattle to within one run. A double from Lopez put runners at second and third, but Betancourt tapped back to the mound.

Papelbon struck out Ichiro and Vidro to start the bottom of the ninth, but both walked Guillen (who was trying to avoid being the first Mariner in history to strike out five times in one game) and Ibanez. None of the pitches were all that wild; in fact, a few balls looked like they could/should have been strikes. But with the winning run at first, Beltre swung at the first pitch and fouled out to Varitek.

So Gagne and Bot faced 11 batters in two innings -- three hits, two walks, one run -- not textbook, but it's a win. Still 7 GA.

(23 strikeouts in the game, 13 by the Sox staff.)

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.75, 120 ERA+) / Jarrod Washburn (4.11, 103 ERA+)

The Red Sox have lost their last nine games at Safeco Field. Their last win came on July 21, 2006. Coco Crisp vs Washburn: 10-for-18 (.556), five doubles, four RBI.

Afternoon finals:
Yankees 16, Royals 8
Toronto 9, Texas 5

Ok - your inane statistic today is :
From today's press pass - 5 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER: Each of Boston’s last 5 losses have come when scoring 4 runs or less…Boston is 2-9 in its last 11 games when scoring 4 or fewer runs (19-37 overall when scoring 4 or less)…By contrast, the Sox are 47-6 when scoring 5 runs or more this season, with wins in each of their last 9 such contests.

So what you're saying is our pitching needs run support of 5 or more in order to be effective?

How does that compare to any other team's records with more or less than 5 runs?

s1c said...

Not sure, am looking at numbers now, but my gut says that the stats for other teams will be closer to their w /l percentage.

The press notes of different teams give different categories, so it's hard. Maybe s1c has a better source.

So, looking at what Sock put up, it appears that maybe those stats aren't a whole better than other teams. So truly it is an inane stat, but not long ago the Sox were like 38 and 0 when scoring 5 or more.

Jere said...

That's like when someone says, for example, "Jim Rice has 25 home runs this season, 13 of those coming at home." Uh, and? If it's close to what it's supposed to be, just let it be and we'll assume that's the case.

About last night--yes, after the one inning, Timlin should've come out, but many people here seemed to act like he's just totally done, after one bad outing, after a full month of great ones. In that first inning he pitched last night, he hardly got hit at all. Granted, he made some non-pitching mistakes of his own...

As for tonight, I'd say we're due to win a game at Safeco.....

Tim, glad you're alive. I'm changing your nickname from Tim Armstrong to Tim's Not Dead.

allan said...

What is it with MLBTV refusing to show NESN on weekends? I don't like it. Not one bit.

allan said...

"Jim Rice has 25 home runs this season, 13 of those coming at home." Uh, and?

It means he has 12 on the road. 12!

That's what I was trying to imply.

I get frustrated hearing stats - or factoids, or coincidences - without any context. OK, so you've just told us a number. Is it a good number, a terrible number, or an average number? How can I know if I don't know how it compares to some other numbers?

Not picking on our venerable s1c here, of course.

Stand by your man, Jere ...I'm right there with ya...none of these Timlin haters were there to rip MDC's poor showing in his Tampa Bay outing.......

laura k said...

And someone here is conveniently forgetting the many months of bad outings before that one month of good outings.

We are acting like he is totally done because the evidence supports it. We're not giving up on the guy out of nowhere. We're seeing exactly what we always expect to see from him. The past month confounded those expectations, but now they are re-confirmed.

laura k said...

MDC is young and full of promise.

Timlin is old and full of...

I don't know what, I can't close the metaphor. He's just washed up, is all.

9casey said...

Holy Shit, a 12 pitch inning, at this pace he can go 14...on gamdeay it says he maxed out at 97.

Edward Lee said...

Lotsa fastballs from Dice-K. Me likey.

allan said...

Looks like Bonds hit 755.

Jere said...

I wanna see who ended up w/the 755 ball! Replays I've seen show a fight, but we never see who wins.

Bonds did his best to overshadow A-Rod.

allan said...

Tiz on 2nd with 1 out. It would be nice to get him home.

Jere said...

Bonds up again.

Jere said...

Wow. Selig declines invitation to speak to ESPN anouncers! As said by our own Dave O'Brien. Wow.

Jere said...

Sorry about the two wows.

allan said...

Bonds BB.

Jere said...

Bonds walks, but as Hershiser points out, he was swingin' for the fences, not letting up and waiting to get back to SF to break record.

Jere said...

Tek: hoping for HR. Let's say center field.

Jere said...

I'll take it!!!!

Jere said...

Manny will get no credit here.

allan said...

MBM beats the throw!

Tek with 2 RBI. Wow.

Zenslinger said...

And Manny is NOT thrown out at the plate!

Jere said...

Did Seattle network show Manny chugging all the way from first? Or are they saying he just was running for a pizza and happened to run along the basepaths?

allan said...

I have FSN on mute, so I don't know, but they did show the slide from about 4 angles. I assume they are saying he missed the plate with his hand?

Benjamin said...

Though Drew was, for all intents and purposes.

Jere said...

Well NESN showed MBCarllewis. All the way around. They made no mention of a possibility of missing home.

allan said...

Just saw footage of Slappy hitting 500. He stands stock still at the plate watching it, then takes a few little steps towards first. I wonder if Manny ever stood at the plate that long.

Jere said...

I'm writing about that right now, actually....

Edward Lee said...

FSN NW gave Manny credit for running hard and making a good slide.

Good call sending Manny home with The Artist Formerly Known As JD Drew on deck and 2 out, I think.

Jere said...

Key DP!

Dice is doing his own Houdini impression tonight.

from dictionary.com venerable - extremely old or obsolete; ancient

I said it was inane - but it did spark discussion?

Good two out hit by tek - now lets get some breathing space.

Jere said...

Dice has stayed out of the "bad inning." I want more runs, so we don't have to worry about that....

Jere said...

Nice. Freakin' nice.

Jere said...

Papi gets third, too.

Jere said...

Tina almost got thrown out on that one!

Jere said...

4-1! Ask and I shall proverbially R.

allan said...

I like doubles.

s1c said...

A break for the Sox, lets add some more though!!

allan said...

Guess I'll head home when this half inning ends. Should be able to catch the 8th and 9th.

Jere said...

What? No third for Manny? Remy says it's the right play? He's running toward the wall!! If he misses it and you're tagging, you still score!

Jere said...

Yeah, Dice! Awesome. 4-1 after 6.

9casey said...

Is Dice done with 99?

Jere said...

Under 100? He ain't done. Let's take him out ourselves by adding like six runs here, though.

Jere said...

Ryan Rowland-Smith in. Who's next, Billy Jim-Jensen?

(NY-area, 80s, reference. And yes, I know it was Roland Smith, but close enough.)

Oka up. Smart. Have him at the ready.

Jere said...

G'night Ms in 7th. We go 8th. Great job by Dice tonight.

They don't in Montreal. They do in the rest of Canada.

9casey said...

Tito would have taken any other pitcher out in that situation.....Lets not handle this guy with kid gloves

Jere said...

"Why what did he do"

I don't know, but the ball traveled through the air, as if by magic. Canadian magic. I woulda just bowled it over there.

I don't know. Third base.

Jere said...

Is s1c's dad named Steve One Charles? And they call him s1 to differentiate, even though they're both s1? But dad goes by Steve?

Nice K, Pap.

9casey said...

Jere...........STOP......PLEASE

Jere said...

Ok. One more out and you norms can go to bed, and we owls can continue to stay up later than this as usual.

Pap hitting 90 is like Wakefield to these Ms. Oh, except these guys weren't up last inning.

Oh! That was a swing! And a strike! Ok, maybe not. Should've got the call oe way or the other...

s1c said...

s1c is for something else, my dad's name was charles though!

One more strike then I can finish my audit!

Jere said...

great, Jones pulls a Roberts and a single can tie it. But Pap will get this guy.
