G130: Red Sox 14, White Sox 2

The first five innings: three baserunners (single, walk, fielding error).

Last four innings: 25 baserunners, 14 hits, 9 walks, 14 runs. Nine men batted in the 6th and 14 more batted in the 8th.

Two of the batting stars:

Lowell: 4-for-6, 2 runs, 2 RBI
Kielty: 3-for-5, walk, double, 1 run, 4 RBI

Wakefield allowed a single to his first batter, then did not allow another hit until there was one out in the 7th inning (7-3-0-3-6, 112).

We are rolling: 11-3, 10-1, 14-2, ... It's the first time the Red Sox had scored 10+ runs in three consecutive games since July 3-5, 2000 (11-8, 14-4 and 11-8 at Minnesota).

***

Tim Wakefield (4.35, 104 ERA+) / Mark Buehrle (3.42, 134 ERA+)

Many of the Red Sox hit Buehrle quite well (stats):
         PA AVG OBP SLG
Kieley 52 .356 .442 .556
Ortiz 43 .375 .419 .650
Crisp 30 .379 .400 .621

Who was the philosopher someone was talking about in here recently? I didn't know who he was and someone posted a bio. Nix or Cakey, maybe?

allan said...

Oh, mornin' Jere. Late night???

Congrats in getting a quote in that article. I got my copy yesterday. No quotes from me, but two people mentioned JoS.

allan said...

I removed the Game Thread poll.

Only 42 people wanted the threads at Threadsox, while 99 said keep them here or had no preference.

I think the ThreadSox board can work -- Cakey did a fantastic job in building it, though I'm not sure if he's going to keep it running -- but the in-game discussions are back at JoS.

Spencer Brown said...

Game is blacked out on mlb.tv due to Fox carrying it along with the Dodgers-Mets game.

Unfortunately, my local affiliate is not carrying the Red Sox game, but the other one.

So I'm SOL. Oh well. Maybe I'll have a life today instead.

Jere said...

"Congrats in getting a quote in that article. I got my copy yesterday. No quotes from me, but two people mentioned JoS."

Thanks. Did you see where he specifically put you and I into a category which consisted of just us? "The musings of well-informed fans."

Jere said...

"Unfortunately, my local affiliate is not carrying the Red Sox game, but the other one. "

That was always a killer being out of town. If your Fox didn't choose the Sox game, even all the $ you paid for Extra Innings didn't get you the game. Truly SOL indeed.

laura k said...

Spencer Brown, that sucks, but that's what Gameday is for. I'm at work, so I'll be using it too.

(Although having a life outside of the Red Sox can be fun once in a while.)

laura k said...

Neat! Although there are a few more than just you two.

So all I got is fraking Gameday?

We'll need some PBP description from those with Faux.

Wang/Bonderman tonight.

laura k said...

yes, pbp pls

Only 27 here.

Of course that's Celsius, but it sounds much cooler.

tim said...

Looks like I'll have to power up the ol (legit) ExpressVu satellite. They have the Boston networks. I wonder what game my cable provider is carrying - I'll be at my grandparents for dinner later and have to periodically skip out to catch half innings and updates :P

In case you missed it yesterday, a quote from Ozzie Guillen:

I snuck that somwhere in the game thread yesterday, but it's one of those quotes that deserves to be posted twice.

Waht article are you guys talking about?

Jere said...

Red Sox Nation 2007 Annual. Lots of bloggers were interviewed for it, though we (at least redsock and I) didn't know what it was for at the time.

Rob said...

spencer brown...

if you have windows media player, go to Here and scroll down to the mlb.tv mosaic. Click the link for "Media Player" and the mlb.tv mosaic will open up in your Windows Media Player. So you will most likely be able to get the Red Sox game... though the picture won't be very good, you'll still be able to watch.

So there's one option.

9casey said...

oh ...Is it viewable online?

Rob said...

95° F / 35° C here in southern Maine. Brutal, but at least it's Summer. The other night it got down to 45°F here.

Certainly ready for some baseball... Maybe we'll have a decent announcing team for the broadcast? (See: Joe Girardi)

Rob said...

9casey: Not sure it's entirely legal... One of the problems with it is you can't control which game you can listen to the audio of. Last night there were 4 games on the mosaic (including the NYY/DET game) but I could only hear the audio from the PIT/HOU game. So if there are issues about that sort of thing (it's sort of a peer-to-peer live-feed type deal) then Gameday it is.

laura k said...

I think 9C was asking about the article that Jere & Allan are in. :)

The other night it got down to 45°F here.

Mmm, sounds great. I can't wait for fall.

9casey said...

ish...thanks for the info .......I was asking jere if the article was available online.......:)

Jere said...

Well, our in-crowd announcer won't be Ken Rosenthal, as he's reporting live from Shea.

Rob said...

Ahh. Heh. My bad. :P

nixon33 said...

Jere said...

nixon33, why don't you go over to Thom's or something?

laura k said...

I'm psyched to get this weekend over with and have an even bigger lead going into the NYY series next week.

I stand ready for troll patrol.

allan said...

I don't think so. I don't have my copy at work. Maybe Jere can see if a website is listed.

There are a lot of articles in it about Sox fans around the world and a section on Sox bars in the US.

The blog article is pretty short. My impression is that the author turned in something much longer and it got chopped up -- a very common practice.

I went back and looked at his response to the stuff I sent him. Just as I thought:

"I ended up with a lot more material from people than I can use in this article. I'm probably going to try to put together another story, for a different publication, so I can use more of it."

What he asked for was:

"In a general sense, I'm interested in your views of the current state, and future of, Sox blogs and message boards.
On a more specific topic, I'm curious what you think of athletes like Schilling starting their own blogs. Blogs like yours are threats to traditional media -- are blogs like Schilling's threats to not only traditional media, but do they also potentially have a negative impact on fan bloggers? Will blogs like yours be marginalized if a number of players flood the market with their own?"

Unfortunately, what was published didn't really address these topics at all.

Jere said...

Oh, on Fox pre-game, a Vin Scully ad for the official charity of the Dodgers.

laura k said...

It was THAT interview?? You wrote that guy a small book on the topic. Too bad it was mostly (or all) cut.

nixon33 said...

Who has better Italian food?

my mother.

laura k said...

Does the Riv still show RS games? That's easy from Bklyn too.

Jere said...

"
Who has better Italian food?"

Don't let this be a definitive answer, but the North End's feast is this weekend and I'm not going, but I'm thinking of going all the way down to NYC for when Little Italy does the feast of San Genarro.

laura k said...

The great Italian food in NYC is mostly very expensive. The cheaper restaurants are mostly touristy, not very good.

There are some good inexpensive places, but you have to know where to go.

laura k said...

The food at San Genarro is awful!

Jere said...

Long story about the Riv, the details I'm still unclear on. Last time i went, still Sox game, but half the tvs were on some hockey game.

Thom's has gotten huge for Sox, and is a little closer to BKLN

9casey said...

nixon33 said...

The best Italian I had in New York was at Forlini's

laura k said...

I better go get some caffeine before the game starts.

Jere said...

I don't even eat meat anyway, I just like street fair-ish atmospheres. And canolis!!!!

nixon33 said...

yeah that food question is so subjective.

allan said...

Jim, the bartender guy who got the Riv/Sox rolling is somewhere else. Jere might know. (Professor or Pirate or something, maybe.)

Actually, I'm not sure if the Riviera still shows Sox games.

god do I ever know what you mean. most of nyc felt that to me before i left. it's so disheartening.

That's beauty of Italian ......you don't need meat......but I still get it.....

allan said...

Reading over my email to him, I did not write a novella, as I remembered. Some general stuff on blogs (which reads quite well!) and Schilling/media comments.

A little bit:

"To be able to read the thoughts of one of your team's best pitchers as he reflects on his start only a few hours after he walked off the mound -- to have him go into pitch-by-pitch detail, far more detail than could ever be reported on ESPN or NESN or any newspaper -- is astounding.

"It is absolutely a threat to traditional media. That's one of the main reasons why sportswriters constantly make fun of the idea: "Schilling got shelled because he was up late chatting with his "little internet friends"." Stuff like that. (Yet these same writers have their stories up on the web and they offer blog-like posts during the games. So why are they making fun of it? And why do they make fun of computers, when just about every fan owns one?) ...

"There is the possibility that fan x will use his short amount of internet time to read 38 Pitches instead of Joy of Sox, but there are things that fan blogs will do -- stats, analysis, historical posts, venting after a loss -- than will not appear in a blog like Schilling's."

Jere said...

I definitely gave the guy a book. Maybe my book was even longer than yours, and that's why one of my quotes made it.... That would be cool if he does a separate article.

allan said...

Good. We get what looks like a good announcing team. When can you say that about Fox?

Never?

Alright, one day we're talkin' about dongs ... now it's street meat.

allan said...

It could be a great article. It's a fascinating subject. And he's -- David Laurila -- a good writer/interviewer.

Jere said...

Thank you. Yeah, I'm gonna keep it going. I wasnt planning on having game threads there but if people keep starting them thats cool.

I hope you don't mind if I spam the address every once in a while, if I actually have something interesting posted there.

Also, I hope you, the users at home, drop by from time to time and check it out.

good going, cakey, i'm glad you're keeping it.

allan said...

let's hope no one calling himself a writer decides what to use based on that

I'll ask this again:

allan said...

his name began with an N? 5 letters maybe.

Jere said...

What the hell happened to Cash?

Jere said...

Lost grip on ball. That's a shame on a pitchout

laura k said...

i assume it wasn't nitzsche, b/c you would know him. (and that is probably spelled wrong)

I don't need some stupid Red Sox Nation card to validate my fanship of the Red Sox. Take a look at these pictures, which I took this afternoon at a specialty foods store I was in for about 5 minutes. These are the types of products that I notice. (There was probably more, but I was only there for a short amount of time, and only want to waste a finite amount of my life taking pictures like this)

laura k said...

allan, i think no one cares but you :)

Jere said...

Look, man, I don't like message boards. That's just me. I appreciate you doing it, I just never had any interest.

Jere said...

Why don't you just TELL me the name of the movie...

tim said...

Fucking weather. Bye bye dish.

laura k said...

Do any of these look familiar?

I wanted to include the name in list I put in the post today. I clicked through all the games in August, but couldn't find it. Ah well.

I was trying to acknowledge that I'm sure he did a good job of it, I just had no interest in it.

I didn't realize that. (Did anyone else?)

I thought you specifically wanted it for game threads because they were too unwieldy here.

I mentioned David Hume, but that was months ago. And he's neither German nor French.

Your first comment was trying to do that? Come on.

Really? damn. Alright, go to my blog and I've posted them there.

laura k said...

laura k said...

Now David Hume, that's a good mention, too. It's not every baseball blog that gets a David Hume mention.

Altho I'm proud to have contributed a South American dictator reference.

Jere said...

After I said the "threatsox" thing I wanted to acknowledge cakey's effort. I wasn't trying to be mean. Like if someone made a steak or something for everyone. I couldn't pretend to like it because I'm a vegetarian, but I'll still acknowledge the thought of it.

ugh

I thought you specifically wanted it for game threads because they were too unwieldy here.

Me too.

Jere said...

My first comment which you thought was funny.

laura k said...

MLBTV workin' fine for me in Canada...

but your stupid satellite crapped out. if you weren't rogers-phobic you could get the game on cable. but nooooo... :)

tim said...

Heh, even if i wanted rogers cable, i couldn't get it here - a local provider is in charge of cable. We don't have rogers (praise jesus).

laura k said...

this was your first comment

But yeah, for what it is, I'm, uh, sure it's a fine board, cakey.

i didn't find it funny, i found it unnecessarily snarky. just my opinion, doesn't have to mean anything to anybody.

tim said...

I'm sure if I plugged in my regular cable, supplying my internet, i could get it too...but then i would not be able to follow this wonderful concoction of thought.

allan said...

Yay - I replaced Zappa with Zizek.

Jere said...

Meaning I took one look at the front page so I wouldn't even know! I just don't like message boards.

laura k said...

well at least jesus is coming in handy for something, keeping rogers out of the tim household

laura k said...

zappa and zizek together would be good alliteration

tim said...

OK Satellite's back and is about 15 seconds faster than MLBTV right now....Count is at 2-2 on sat and 0-2 on MLBTV.

Jere said...

coco's got it

laura k said...

zizek isn't french or german. poor slovenians, nobody remembers them.

Jere said...

Red Sox didn't "let" anybody into the race, guy. Girardi corrects, nice.

tim said...

Red Sox didn't "let" anybody into the race, guy. Girardi corrects, nice.

Heh, just about to comment on that. At least one announcer realizes it.

laura k said...

explanation for us poor slobs following on gameday?

Jere said...

nice catch manny. we go 3.

Jere said...

Just that. Guy said we "let the Yanks back in the race." Girardi said, "Sox didn't do poorly, Yanks were just winning like crazy."

laura k said...

cool

tim said...

Aight, after this half I gotta get ready and go do obligatory family shits. Probably will catch parts of the game but this is pretty much it for today.

Jere said...

Cash in now, honey

Jere said...

I actually heard someone say "he gone" on that strikeout, imitating the Hawk

allan said...

Wow. MLBTV is 3 pitches behnd Gameday -- which is usually 1-2 pitches behind the live action.

Jere said...

almost, Dusty

Jere said...

And with over-the-air Fox, I'm probably even further ahead. Should I wait a beat before giving plays away?

laura k said...

MLBTV is 3 pitches behnd Gameday -- which is usually 1-2 pitches behind the live action.

the one time i had mlbtv and regular tv (EI) on at the same time, mlbtv was often a full batter behind. guy was on deck on the computer, had already made an out on tv

Jim said...

Another reason to root for the Yanks not to make the playoffs. They won like crazy after June 1, but still fell short. Therefore ... THE GAMES YOU WIN IN APRIL ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE ONES IN SEPTEMBER! Baseball wisdom is timeless.

laura k said...

hey, what's the minimum number of pitches for you to consider an AB long?

like, allan and i always say there's no such thing as a 5-game hitting streak. gotta be at least 10 to be a streak. that's our own criteria.

what's yours for a long AB? was that a long AB for Ococ, 8 pitches? in your opinion.

Jere said...

wake's lookin' good today

Jere said...

depends. if it's 0-2 with seven total pitches, all foul, before the final pitch, that's a "longer" AB than a 3-2 count with eight total pitches.

Jere said...

but the general 8 zone is about right. 9 is def long.

laura k said...

hmm. context-dependent counting. interesting.

Jere said...

Oh right, Cash wears the regular batting helmet forward while catching. But a flapless one.

Jere said...

nice job this inning wake!

Mike L said...

I'd actually say 8 pitches is right. Once you've got a full count and a couple foul balls, you're workin'.

Ron said...

8 pitches is a long AB, but a short inning. Sounds about right to me.

Jere said...

Damn, Tim's gone. I was gonna ask him to pick up some Mirabelli pesto for me.

allan said...

Fox shows a replay of a Wakefield pitch -- and of course has to have the sponsor's paint roller go across the screen -- and they just about miss Wake's strike 3 pitch to Fields to end the inning. At which point, it's off for more commercials.

Jere said...

Papi about to get tagged by pitcher, turns and just runs to dugout. Awesome.

laura k said...

and of course has to have the sponsor's paint roller go across the screen

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Jere said...

haha, Beueueuehehhrrle was laughin'

Jere said...

sorry to use the word "awesome," Lgirl.

laura k said...

mirabelli pesto, cooked slooooow, the old-fashioned way

laura k said...

sorry to use the word "awesome," Lgirl.

aw hey jere, no worries. context is everything.

anything papi does is awesome.

Jere said...

nice.

Jere said...

Wow, Youk hit both legs with one foul ball, then did the limp on each leg in turn.

allan said...

I posted about a 17-pitch AB recently.

One year I kept a list of long-AB. I fed Jayson Stark some info now and again. I think the cutoff for me was 12 or 13. After a certain number, the number of occurences drops way down.

Only 3 ABs today over 6 pitches:

Yook 7 in 2nd
Richar 7 in 2nd
Ococ 8 in 3rd

I'd say it's gotta be at least 10. Otherwise, you've got 2-3 long AB every game.

Mike L said...
