Speaking of the media, I'd be amused to hear your comments on this piece of crap from Newsweek ..

Sounds like this idiot did his "research" by tuning into sports radio for 30 minutes and reading a few CHB columns.

Wow, daniel. What a find.

"You might think that Boston Red Sox fans would finally be a bit more secure, even somewhat sanguine about their team, after the 2004 miracle comeback against the New York Yankees and that curse-busting romp over the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. You would be wrong."

I would be wrong? I guess I'm the asshole here. They have the biggest division lead out of all six divisions in the MLB, the Yankees have been playing .800 ball since the break, you all know the rest of the reasons. And I'm somehow wrong.

" And the Red Sox still own the best record in baseball.

But none of that matters now that the Yankees have carved some 10 games off what once appeared to be an insurmountable lead in the American League East for the Red Sox."

So it doesn't matter that the red sox have the best record in baseball, because the Yankees have played a plethora of crappy teams and thrived on it, while the red sox have played halfway decent teams, and done well, but haven't dominated the way the yankees have. But none of this matters, children! run for the hills! The lead only appeared insurmountable to the visually impaired - how could you expect the red sox to keep playing .750 ball for the rest of the year, along with the yankees playing .350 ball? anyone with a brain would have seen that the race would get tighter. it's still the least tight race out of any of them, so stfu dumbasses.

"And nobody here welcomes any reminder of the epic collapse of ’78, a succession of events that turned a journeyman shortstop, Bucky Dent, into an eternal four-letter word in this city."

I've got a few four letter words in mind for this guy right about now. Bringing up 78, psft. Not going to waste my time talking about this one.

"Last weekend you could feel the mood escalate from tense to borderline hysterical."

I couldn't. Probably because I wasn't surrounded by morons like you.

"For several weeks fans here had consoled themselves with the notion that New York had been feasting on the weak part of its schedule while Boston was still playing solid ball."

It wasn't any sort of consolation, it was reality.

"Then this past weekend the Yankees went into Cleveland and swept the [previously]contending Indians"

Fixed that one for ya, buddy. They feasted on a team which is currently struggling and falling out of the playoff race.

"You don’t need much grasp of baseball, Freud or history to understand how this perpetual runner-up status gnaws at a city that never got over ceding to New York its once-upon-a-time standing as economic and intellectual capital of the nation. But it’s past time for Boston to get over that."

You're providing the fangs for the gnawing you speak of.

He goes on to talk about trends for awhile as if he's astute in the field.

He also has this to mention:
"So while it’s only natural for Red Sox fans to look back over their shoulder at the Yankees (or, quite possibly, ahead at them soon)"

And you call yourself a fan? (I'm assuming he is, having credited himself with living in Boston for most of his life)

You wonder why there's Panic - mediots like this guy are saying shit like "quite possibly, ahead at them soon" - stick it up your ass, we don't need no propaganda!

I notice he has an email address:

First of all, I grew up with pennant races and I like my team to win it.

Secondly, every major professional sport in North America has playoffs. Why do baseball fans still have to be lectured about the Wild Card? I think we all got it in the first year.

Thirdly, since New York is the intellectual capital of the US, I guess that explains why the YES Network always leads off with that classic hair-restorer commercial. Them smart folks must be burnin' up the phone lines.

Meh. Last time I emailed a mediot to complain, I received a reply saying that my comments were in consideration for being published!

Idiots are the WEEI folks who are having a couple of yankee fans host the morning show right now (6-10).

This morning all I heard about was the inability of this team to come from behind. Well, here are a few stats for the idiots:

29 come from behind wins, they have trailed after eight innings 43 times, next fewest are the Angels at 46. When they trail after 8 they win 5% of the time which is 6th best in the AL (Cle-leads at 10.64 (5/42).

One last stat - If tied or leading after 8 they are 70-6. Which is 5th best in the AL (thanks to a 68-1 Record when Leading after 8).

s1c said...

Oh, yeah, that vaunted Yankee team has came back 3 times in 53 games when trailing after 8.

one of our comebacks was a thrilling victory over the yankees.

Maybe this will make everyone feel better. The Onion is probably just as reliable as Newsweek on this point, but at least it's funny. Especially the last line.

s1c said...

hell the onion might be more reliable, lmaoapmyp

tim said...

lmao, great onion read.

Reasons to put away the panic button. A column I missed by Bill Burt of the eagle tribune. Good read.

chokers 0

s1c said...

Yankees and tigers are playing?

Actually, I have NESN classics on - a game vs the Orioles in 2003. HMMM, wonder how it will turn out?

Who started for the Yankees?

tim said...

Mussina-Verlander...we both have 4 game series this weekend, only diff is that ours has one make up game...theirs was always a 4 gamer.

Ron said...

Yanks somehow gave up 4 runs in the top of the first. Works for me.

Ron said...

Ah, it was a Grand Slam. Nice way to start the game. Fly out, single, error, walk, grand slam.

tim said...

6-1 tigres now, bottom 2.

Ron said...

Using Murray Chass logic, Detroit should win this game 27-9.

Here's your winner. Nice call, s1c. I knew some people who were listening to EEI the day after Gagne's blown game and they said the callers were acting like the Sox had just lost the division lead.

s, did you notice the difference in Papi's swing on the game winner in that '03 game. The viloence is gone must be the pain......

Jere said...

Mussina finally out after 5. 7-3 Detroit. I love that the Yanks finally have some competition this next stretch. We should pull away.

Jere said...

Verlander threw 119 pitches in 5 and a third. Which is why he's out. But Tigers still lead 7-3 after 6.

The sox are playing the Angels, With a rookie throwing tommorrow, who will most likey only throw 70-80 pitches.........and how come no sunday starter yet...Isn't that Wakes spot? We will have are chance to put them away in the Bronx......

Ron said...

Looks like HGH struck out swinging to end the game, Tigers win 8-5.

Woohoo! 5.5 GA.

Let's pile on tomorrow.

Jere said...

9casey--included in "this stretch" for them is 8 with DET and 3 with LAA. We have Tampa and Chicago after our 4 with LAA, who we play at home while they play them way out west. Pull away!

Re: Papi's swing, yes he had a lot more, and its the legs, he also was able to crouch more.

laura k said...

Use that email address, folks! Don't be shy!

Tim, you've GOT to email him - you've got it all written out here, just slap it into an email and fire it off.

5.5 this morning, soon to be more!
