Since 1901, the Red Sox have finished ahead of the Yankees 31 times.
Not a majority, but it's not 0, either.
I'd like to think whoever was on 'EEI slammed Dent after he said that with some actual FACTS, but I have my doubt that happened.

Besides, it's in October that these Yankees can't win the big one. They look strong for six months, but they always choke on the big stage of October. You can set your watch by it.
A taste of Bill Simmons' latest ESPN magazine article about pink hatters:
Of course, it's tough to ignore three-fourths of a crowd in Tampa screaming for "Yooooooooook" as the alleged Boston fan behind me asks, "Why are they booing?" Back in the old days, we used late-season collapses and crushing playoff defeats to weed out these fair-weather knuckleheads. Now they're multiplying like Body Snatcher pods.
Score early tonight. Get Beckett a lead to work with. This year it seems like Clemens is 50/50. Either on or off. But the Red Sox can grind out at-bats against him.
Not sure how I feel about our lineup, but we've been able to get the job done when it has looked like this.
Manny Ramirez has a strained left oblique muscle (likely aggravated on a swing last night). They say he's day-to-day, but will probably be rested for the rest of the Yankees series.
Some papers say Buchholz will start on Saturday, others say Sexy Lips.
Mirabelli is eligible to come off the disabled list on Saturday.
Also: With a 17.69 ERA in his last three starts, Mike Mussina has been demoted to the pen,
Buchholz start on Saturday? That would be something to look forward to. Of course, the way Jules has been pitching, I wouldn't be surprised if they stick with him.
Sounds like Manny needs to use some "oblique strategies".
I was born in Wisconsin, but moved to Mass when I was 4. For a long time the Brewers were my favorite team (with the Sox close behind). I remember many a call of "Coooooooop" for Cecil Cooper. [just looked him up and saw he's now the Astros coach; I wish him luck.]
Last night I went into Boston to see Spectrum at the Middle East. Listened to the first 1/2 of the game on the radio on the way in and watched the last couple of innings over hummus. Disappointing, but not too surprising. Still, we're looking good.
Glad Pedroia didn't make anything of that beaning.
The Yankee fans were joking about beaning Dusty with Manny out. But I'd be rushing to judgment if I said I thought it was intentional. Though it was a fastball.
I do not give a flying shit about what celebrities are at Yankee Stadium tonight, or last night, or tomorrow night. Or ever. There's a ballgame on. Kthx.
Amy - You are in NESN country, the espn is blacked out in Western Ma and all of CT (except for fairfield, CT).
Well, I guess Dent was right, by the time the spankees come to fenway next month the Sox will be looking up in the standings at them. As Redsock said - see you all in the spring.

Hitless through five. But this is why I don't like the general concept of no-hitters. You could walk eight men, have a no-hitter, and be mobbed at the mound and always be known for throwing a no-hitter.
Justin Verlander had four walks in his no-hitter. Curt Schilling allowed one base runner (on an error) and then gave up one hit. Who's outing was more impressive?
My husband is a die hard Yankee fan. He sold soda at Yankee stadium, grew up in the Bronx, yada, yada, yada. I keep hoping for the same kind of conversion since we have lived in New England since 75, but no luck so far. My two daughters are Sox fans, though.

back now.
did the globe misspell billy's last name?
Yes, looks like they did. I just copied it directly from the web site. Since then the site has been corrected.
WEEI had Bucky Dent on - asked about the race "The Yankees will close the gap, they always close the gap in September. For 100 years the Yankees always close the gap in September".
hopefully they will have the interview on WEEI's web page later.
Bring the bats boys, its time to knock fat billy out of the game early.
second day in a row the Globe has listed Melky Cabrera as Miguel.
Maybe there's a Melky Cairo playing somewhere tonight...
Espn preview on Beckett - He is 9-1 with a 1.90 ERA in 10 road starts, not allowing more than three runs in any of them and winning his last three.
Of course his last road start he did allow three! He needs to come up big tonight.
For 100 years the Yankees always close the gap in September."
Always!
100 years out of 100 years!
Every single year!!!
The Red Sox have never finished ahead of the Yankees. Never. Bucky says so. Obviously, history is not his strongest subject.
And why did WEEI have this nobody on? Trying to get Sox fans to be afraid of the boogeyman? Pathetic.
Since 1901, the Red Sox have finished ahead of the Yankees 31 times.
Not a majority, but it's not 0, either.

Last night's hand-written scorecard didn't go very well. So I'm scrapping it and making a new one. Not sure it'll be done by game time, but we'll see.
Actually one of the hosts asked him about the greatest choke job in the history of baseball!!!! God I love 2004!!!
Manny out tomorrow too. =(
Taste of the NY tabloids.
And tomorrow morning the Yankees will be done.

how true, how true.
i've been at work all day w/o access to news...what is the latest on manny?

Ian Browne of MLB.com says it will be Sexy Lips on Saturday. What are we going to a six man rotation?
I wasn't aware that the division was clinched.

BR Stats!
Last 5 starts v Red Sox for Billy (all in 2003): 27 IP, 38 H, 29 R, 8.67!
Are we forced to endure espn tonight?
Your moderator this evening is trollzapper, a/k/a L-girl. Go Sox!
"For 100 years the Yankees always close the gap in September".
Except for the years they don't, that is.
ok im back.
tonight we will win...and tomorrow old man of the mountain will put his bloody-socked foot on the neck of the yankees.
Game is on NESN also, so we are not stuck with ESPN. But with all this glowing over Clemens, I could hardly tell.
wow our lineup looks like a red-headed stepchild....ugh
well we're stuck with steve phillips and friends.
Wow. I never thought I'd say this, but... Nice play by Giambi.
"well we're stuck with steve phillips and friends."
i'm glad i can't hear him. i hate that guy.
Giambi pulls one out of his *** and Pedroia gets plunked by FB - payback for A-rod?
We need Papi to go deep!
so Remy thinks he hit Pedroia intentionally?
Glad Pedroia didn't make anything of that beaning.
The Yankee fans were joking about beaning Dusty with Manny out. But I'd be rushing to judgment if I said I thought it was intentional. Though it was a fastball.
Looks like he got in there... TWICE! Too bad it was out of the line of sight for the ump.
By the way, did anyone ever hear back from Bradford about that apostrophe? I am still curious.
Re- Dustin - Remy thinks there is no doubt about it being intentional. This is Rahger and he dotted the I in the eye for an eye.
I don't see how it could *not* be intentional.
there's a dh tonight so billy can act tough.
I don't see how it could *not* be intentional.
Agreed. Fastballs don't get away from Clemens very often.
Rushing to judgment? This is Roger Clemens - and the Red Sox. No rush needed.
By the way, did anyone ever hear back from Bradford about that apostrophe? I am still curious.
Nope not a peep.
I did just hear the youk call from the crowd.
Bah. Drew got a bad read on that one. Took a step in.
orel has enjoyed watching slappy's emotions blossom and grow this season.
Josh to Slappy: HA!
orel has enjoyed watching slappy's emotions blossom and grow this season.
Love is in teh air
.... and that was after he gushed like a schoolgirl over CI.
Drew looked bad at first on the double but not so bad on the replay.
The K on A-Rod was awesome.
i like the weak hack by arod
Weird, ESPN here isn't even covering the game. I sure am not missing Orel's commentary.
NESN saying that Manny may miss the next 10 days. Aaaaaargh!
Sounded good off the bat.
8 straight balls from william
MAKE HIM WORK!
Two walks. Is he toying with us or losing control?
who will beckett hit?
I do not give a flying shit about what celebrities are at Yankee Stadium tonight, or last night, or tomorrow night. Or ever. There's a ballgame on. Kthx.
shemp K
roger is no longer good enough to toy with anyone.
dan shulman talking about beckett being more of a thrower this season than a pitcher.
wtf?
come on beckett. stop nibbling
Steve Phillips is without question one of the 5 dumbest people in the world.
damn
strike him OUT
goddamn it.
"Steve Phillips is without question one of the 5 dumbest people in the world."
would joe morgan be in the top 5 as well?
Yikes, what is going on? I cannot bear to watch this....
johnny damon: red sox killer.
we are in for a long night?
orel: "the red sox are not out of this at all."
thanks, idiot.
You know, I never really believed in the ESPN pro-Yankee bias, but man, listening to these guys, you wouldn't know there were 2 teams on the field.
The only thing they say about the RS are Manny's injured and Drew sucks. Other than that, all Yankees all the time.
wow, im glad we stepped it up for this series right?
what a bunch of fucking horseshit.
this team has no balls. we cannot put these fuckers away?
OK, I am really NOT enjoying this. Is Beckett really intimidated by the thought of Clemens his hero pitching tonight?
uh-oh, here comes the gloom and doom. only the 2nd inning folks. take it easy.
How come you people aren't getting NESN? I am in western MA. Where are you all that you are stuck with those guys?
Extra Ininngs package has ESPN feed tonight. We often don't have NESN.
frustration!
sox down 0-3 with 7 innings to go.
sigh ...
i guess i'll be reading books and watching movies in october. oh well. see you guys in ft myers.
I'd hate to be a water cooler in the Red Sox dugout tonight.
frustration, i understand.
You're right, L-Girl. I will take a deep breath. Just too many bad memories...I have to tap into those 2004 memories instead.
yeah Amy!!
hey sox: make billy crytsal cry!
(again)
did you all hear, hilly krystal (cbgb's) died. 75 y/o. lung cancer.
ahh, Extra Innings. I am on regular cable. Our ESPN isn't showing any game at all.
more sad news: billy crystal is still alive.
my daughter consulted her magic 8-ball. WIll the Red Sox win tonight? "definitely yes" There ya go. watch and have fun.
we live outside of nesn area. by a wide margin. :)

Leadoff BB. Good AB. Good start.
from 1977 to 2006, the home team has had a 3-0 lead after 2 innings 3119 times.
they won 2572 of those: 82.5%.
"we live outside of nesn area. by a wide margin. :) "
Well, Red Sox Nation is everywhere. (How do you folks quote a prior post here? I had to improvise.)
Giambi wins a footrace against Lugo. picture that.

kidding? who?
i was kidding. i can't stand the "woe is us, the game is lost" stuff. so i was making fun of it.
(i assume s1c knew that, too.)
Giambi actually looks relatively slim.
sorry amy. we should watch the sarcasm, i guess.
allan (redsock) always posts those ".... is throwing a shut-out..." (or whatever). it's supposed to be a jinx.
SLAPPY OUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT
7-4-3!!!!
fuck you aprod.
PEDORIA! My man! And big props to Hinske for getting that one back in quickly. Good play all-around!
FUCK YOU A-ROD!!
[if there are big delays in comments, it's because i keep losing my connection to blogger... very annoying]
I saw that ball leave A-Rod's bat and let out a resigned "oh, fuck!" then "OH FUCK!" nice turnaround by dusty.
it's supposed to be a jinx.
it always works.
espn saying alex showing leadership, he was hustling, not a mistake. god the mfy cannot made a mistake to these guys
(they did mention almost as an afterthought that the sox have the best mlb record)
(i assume s1c knew that, too.) of course, he says in his best stooge voice.
Amy - Sarcasm here is used as a safety valve. No matter what, the lead won't be less than six in the morning, but I have faith that the boys with the red numbers will pull this out.

Superman couldn't have gotten that one, oCoC. Hope he didn't hurt himself.
pointless dive for ococ.

phillips saying giambi must bunt here
That a boy!!!!
Remy is trying to jinx the no-hitter by giving away 20 tees at the rem report. Go sign up now!!!
then thank goodness we don't have nesn tonight
when the sox go bad, remy always does a commercial for himself, thinking that will get them winning.
so why don't the sox go 162-0 every year?
WE CANNOT GET A HIT!

Ok, I am feeling better. I sort of assumed you were all being sarcastic (as I can be), but you never know for sure!
Had a phone call during the last inning, so didn't get to scream about that ARod putout. What a move!
People answer the phone during baseball games???
well this is annoying.
My mother...what can I say? Even at my age, I have to answer a call from Mom
Nixon, is your caplock stuck? lol
thank god the mighty damon didn't slam the dagger in any deeper. :<#
If my mom called during a red sox - yankees game, i'd know something big had happened. :)
moron phillips says jeter will get 4000 hits without fail.all 3 of these guys are polishing ci's knob like there's no tomorrow.
i admit it: i need remdawg nation!!!!!!!!
phillips says if jeter doesn't play his whole career with mfy it'll be "a disservice to everybody".
everybody!
i admit it: i need remdawg nation!!!!!!!!
give in to the dark side, it will make you powerful
OK, let's get a hit. Beckett has settled down.
My parents live in NY...need I say more? I am the family rebel, having become a Red Sox fan when I moved to Boston in 75. My husband is still a Yankee fan. That's why I need this blog! I need the support of other fans while I watch the games. Glad I found you all. :)
BB Tek.
let's go crispy.
amy, you know about l-girl's conversion in 03?
(we had a mixed marriage too)
dear anyone on the red sox: get a hit off of this FAT MOFO!
Remy says Clemens tonight is the 35 year old version. Why are these guys so kind to this arrogant blowhard?
Why are these guys so kind to this arrogant blowhard?
It's ESPN.
He is a Yankee.
Wow, Amy, cool. Is your husband really into baesball?
Allan and I were diehard fans on each side of the rivalry for 15+ years. Then I had a religious experience.
That's why I need this blog! I need the support of other fans while I watch the games. Glad I found you all. :)
Yay, me too!
When we were in NYC, SOSH was Allan's lifeline.
this is bullshit. i'm not buying any of it. fatty roger pitching a no-hitter against us when he's been CRAP elsewhere this season?
Just got back from dinner... Did anyone else get annoyed at Youk when he went to play that ball hit between first and second? And then it looked like he had some choice words for Beckett.

Holy Crap, I am going to blow a gasket! I want to see killer instinct.
amy, you know about l-girl's conversion in 03?
Nope---are you two married? Like I said, I am a newbie here.
Another man LOB. So annoying.
espn shows 1978 and you-know-what - and that's it. no footage exists from 2004, i guess.
We need to wake up here!
No hits agains the fat turd. C'mon!
espn ad for baseball tonight:

It CAN"T be that hard to hit that bastard.
(Note to self - shut the hell up, you couldn't do it if your life depended on it)
It's ESPN.
He is a Yankee.
No, I was talking about REMY on NESN.
Allan and I were diehard fans on each side of the rivalry for 15+ years. Then I had a religious experience. Is that why you hate the Mets?
ENOUGH WITH THE CELEBRITIES! Radio won't shut up about them and the TV keeps showing them.
Phew. I needed that.
its gatting late early boys...

Whoops. Looks like I missed something.
My bad.
Go Pedroia!
