SWEEP!
Tizzle: 4-for-5, 2 HR!, 3 RBI.
In both games, the White Sox starter breezed through the first three innings, but in the second time through the lineup, the Red Sox pounced. Boston scored a total of 9 fourth-inning runs today.
Also: It's 11 PM as I type this and the MFY-Tigers are close to starting.
***
Curt Schilling (4.25, 106 ERA+) / John Danks (5.30, 86 ERA+)
The East lead is 5.5. Magic #: 30.
In Detroit, it's Fat Billy / Andrew Miller at 7 PM.

DP IN THE TWO HOLE.
did i mention that i love lowell in the 5 hole?
yanks in a rain delay...
Teener was wrong. Jeemer's translator Jeff Yamaguchi says they played the Jeemer song "like 30 times last night".
i wish i could hear that sheeeit.
i am addicted to game threads.
i say i'm not going to be there - then i'm there - then i say goodbye like 3 times and can't stop posting.
next week we'll have out-of-town guests for the yankees series, and we'll both be sitting there w/ our laptops. :)
Unless anyone has an objection, I'm just gonna take ThreadSox down. It's pointless.
cakey, appreciate your attempt w/ threadsox. it looked really good and i liked it.
i guess people are just used to coming here.
Cakey what part of Maine are you in....
Northern Aroostook County
no shit, My mom is Fort Farifeild and my aunt still lives in Caribou
I've been at these game threads for a grand total of 3 days.. and I think I've found a home. It's terrific because I have only one friend who is a Red Sox fan enough so that we talk baseball... but she's never around. And then there's my father who's a big fan, but he likes to have his computer time... So this is great, being able to talk to people while the game is going on. Now let's sweep this thing, eh?
Dear Curt:
PLEASE DONT SUCK TONIGHT
Cakey, it was a valiant effort, and it looked great. I hope it didn't use too much of your time.
Cakey... I live down in York--my grandmother lives in Caribou, and I haven't been up to the County since Christmas.
Could ThreadSox still be used for the discussion forms -- just not game threads? You did great work on it.
I'm sorry, but I think games belong here.
ish, welcome home. :)
That is really great to hear, ish!
It'll be fun next week -- and onto into the playoffs.
dear curt: what he said,
signed,
not a fan (of you personally)
Don't you think it's a little early to be squawking at the umpires, el Julio?
So two potential webgems for Chicago today. The first one was that sliding catch late in the first game by Jerry Owens.
ish , my cousins live in york
whats danks' record out of curiousity?
Cakey--Very cool. Well, I can't stand York. Nor can I really stand southern Maine these days (TOURISTS) but hey. I can't complain too much, I grew up here. Fun to hear.
Bob Wickman was just designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves today after he gave up a two-run walk-off home run last night to Adam Dunn and those Cincinnati Reds.
Is the $70 million mistake available off the bench?
nixon33: 6-11
thanks ish
i hope the MFY play tonight...
Glad to see Pedroia back in there.
I hope the Yankees don't because then they'll probably have to do a day-nighter tomorrow. And they don't get a day off before they rendezvous with the Sox in the Bronx. (Okay, I'll stop with the rhyming)
good point...but i still like to watch mulitple games...in case one goes wrong!
First time posting. Red Sox fan in Tampa, FL. My grandparents are from Aroostook County-Eagle Lake.
Radar looks good for Chicago.
Chicago Radar
Not so good, but not horrible either in Detroit.

Remy doing the Sterling/Kay bit: that hit was foul by "six inches".
I've never been to Eagle Lake. Been to Portage Lake...
Someone emailed me during Game 1 about getting a Blogger account to comment. Not sure if he's here.
Don said there are blue skies above the park.
ESPN-Radio is on the station I use to listen to the Yankees.
Interesting tid-bit from Glenn Geffner's notecards: The Red Sox have won all 4 double-header openers they've played all season. Not sure what their record for Game 2 is. I think they've swept one or two of those other ones.
Not me. I modified my wife's account. Otherwise I'd be posting as Petunia.
let's see schill get a K!!!
two strikeouts for the old timer!
There we go!
Danks's MLB picture makes him look more than a little like the redneck from the Simpsons.

Interesting article on the front page of ESPN.com...
After surveying expert opinions and counting your votes to determine which players, managers or executives are the faces of each franchise in baseball, it's time to determine whose visage best represents the entire sport.
So let's see who we've got. I looked at the list and I think I'd agree with all of them:
- Pittsburgh: Jason Bay
- Oakland: Billy Beane
- Houston: Craig Biggio
- San Francisco: Barry Bonds
- Atlanta: Bobby Cox (could have also gone with Chipper)
- Tampa Bay: Carl Crawford
- Milwaukee: Prince Fielder
- Cincinnati: Ken Griffey, Jr.
- LA Angels: Vladimir Guerrero
- Chicago Sox: Ozzie Guillen
- Toronto: Roy Halladay
- Colorado: Todd Helton
- San Diego: Trevor Hoffman
- Philadelphia: Ryan Howard
- Seattle: Ichiro
- NY Yankees: Derek Jeter
- Detroit: Jim Leyland
- Boston: David Ortiz
- St. Louis: Albert Pujols
- NY Mets: Jose Reyes (one of my favorite non-BOS players)
- Minnesota: Johan Santana (could have gone with Hunter as well)
- LA Dodgers: Vin Scully (heh.)
- Cleveland: Grady Sizemore
- Kansas City: Mike Sweeney
- Baltimore: Miguel Tejada
- Arizona: Brandon Webb
- Florida: Dontrelle Willis
- Texas: Michael Young
- Chicago Cubs: Carlos Zambrano
- Washington: Ryan Zimmerman
bad dong.
I don't if would be able to pick Brandon Webb out of a lineup....
(let me know when saying "dong" has gotten old, heh.)
it's either old already or it will never get old
ok lets get some runs for the fat old man of the mound!
Wow! Nice pick Dusty.
Ok, time to start hitting the kid ... hard
I'd have to go with Scott Kazmir for the Rays.
so i'm not the only one who calls him dusty :)
would you look at these people pimping their relationships? geez, you never saw us holding up signs like that when we were a mixed marriage.
(altho we tried to get writing work out of it now and again.)
Some teams don't have a face (Michael Young? He's a great player, but not much of a face.)
they might have a face to their fans, tho, and to rival teams.

Yeah. Teixeira was TEX's face before he was traded to ATL, I'd say. I'd like to see Gabbard become the face of that franchise some day. Big Gabbard fan.
seriously...another shit pitcher making us look bad.
And 27 pitches through 3 IP?
A guy named Danks?
Shit's gotta stop.
It's been 3 innings. Glass if half full. We've been shut out, so far. Heh. But man. I am going to tear my hair out if we don't get to this guy soon.
We stopped them a 1-0 lead this afternoon and that worked out well.
Gotta get dongin'.
Pitches:
Garland in Game 1: 9-11-15 30 ...
Danks in Game 2: 9-11-7 ? ...
Second time through, we pounce.
there goes remy, "campaigning"...
He doesn't sound all that jokey about it, either. The campaigning, that is.
Apparently Joe Castiglione is in the running for RSN president, also. But he has not campaigned once on the air.
It's not to say that Geffner and Dave O'Brien haven't campaigned for him on a couple of occasions.
We have also hit him hard so far, but right at people or not quite hard enough. I sense good things coming. Let's see if we can face Mike "I'm so happy I'm a Yankee" Myers again.
lead off walk usually means good things
Still delayed in Detroit, I see.
Papi Dong
lead off walk usually means good things
More than an out, but as opposed to a single, not really.
PAPI!!!!!
There's a dong. [/kay]
NICE ONE PAPI!
Pedroia's got some armor now. Like Barry Bonds. (Some thing his elbow armor helps him hit the home runs, etc. etc.) Bonds' armor is hinged and everything.
Link (for good measure)
Foul home run, then a single. Didn't he do that in game 1?
I can't believe I missed Ortiz's home run! (Radio wasn't on because Geffner gives me a headache) Don and Jerry it is, I guess.
That's a gap shot... THERE's a gap shot!
Dr. is In.
THE DOCTAH!!!!!
Remy has learned that Manny is "into it". Meaning, he knows the team is good, and knows where they are in the standings.
Don is surprised that Manny knows about the wild card race.
Remy tells us that Manny is aware that his and Ortiz's power numbers are down.
Imagine that.
Wanna hear what Timmy McMoron said on August 12, 2006 about leadoff walks?
"There is nothing that opens up big innings any more than a leadoff walk. Leadoff home runs don't do it. Leadoff singles, maybe. But a leadoff walk. It changes the mindset of a pitcher. Since he walked the first hitter, now all of a sudden he wants to find the fatter part of the plate with the succeeding hitters. And that could make for a big inning."
I guarantee that team scores more runs in an inning that begins with a HR than with a walk. Guaranfuckingtee it.
i dont want to see mike lowell go next yerar.
I get some sort of perverse joy out of watching manny run. I will always remember his belly flop into second base.
And all this just as the mlb.tv craps the bed.
Ah, well. I'm happy!
Here's for keeping Mike.
"Second time through, we pounce."
AMEN
Gee, Don and Jerry, please tell us how Manny remembers to eat every day and tie his shoes and keep breathing? Does he have an assistant?
God, these guys are as bad as M'Kay sometimes.
Hell of a lot better than Joe Morgan & Tim McCarver, though.
My scorecards are eerily alike today.
Hell of a lot better than Joe Morgan & Tim McCarver, though.
Generally, but not always.
None of the Red Sox players want to see him go next year either. That speaks volumes. (Whether those volumes reach the front office remains to be seen.) But you look at Dr. Doubles here and how he seems to really be adapting to the 5th slot. He's worth much more than J.D. Drew and Lugo are.
One thing that is being overlooked is how Lowell's having a bad year defensively. This is actually his worst year defensively (15 errors so far... 14 errors in 2002)...
But I'd much rather have his bat and his experience and his baseball intellect than a gold-glove season.
It's funny, but I can't think of a single time when a Lowell or even a Lugo error really lost us a game or ended up being a huge headache. I'm sure there has been a time or two, but in general we just seem to have gotten away with our errors.
I know at least one baserunning play involving Lugo that arguably cost us a game... That's one area that Lowell and Lugo differ completely. Using your head on the basepaths (and not getting picked off)
I'd love to see Lowell back to, for 2 years. It seems like more than that is a pretty big risk given his age.
Oh, and seeya Danks.
This Floyd dude has allowed 46 hits in 29.1 innings and has a 7.06 ERA.
MONEY!!!
And hello Floyd.
Luckily signing decisions are not left to players, or else we'd still have Millar.
I love Mike Lowell as much as everyone here, but his popularity in the clubhouse is not a good reason to re-sign him for more years than he probably has in him.
Was that Cash's 1st ML hit?
At last check I think Lowell said he wants a 4 year contract. I wonder if he'd be happy with 2 in Boston? Then see where to go from there.
First Red Sox hit. I know Cash has ML experience with Toronto (and I think MIN but I'm not sure... I'll look it up)
Absolutely. He's going to want 3 or 4 years, not the 2 years he's got left in him, if that.
CASH!!!
None of the Red Sox players want to see him go next year either. That speaks volumes.
I don't think it does. They are his teammates -- no one is going to say "He's been lucky. He's getting old."
Plus we've all heard what former players say when it comes to analysing games. Most of them are pretty stupid.
Toronto system (up and down) for 3 seasons... then a year in Tampa Bay.
This was his 58th M.L. hit.
If you believe Seth Mnookin (and why wouldn't you, he actually had a desk at Fenway the whole season), Millar had pretty much warn out his welcome in the clubhouse by the end of 2005.
But your point is still valid, that's why baseball isn't a democracy.
love the shot of the dugout cooling off Manny by waving towels -- cracks me up
2 years tops! And not at the $9 per he's making now.
2/14? I don't think he'd go for that.
I don't think it does. They are his teammates -- no one is going to say "He's been lucky. He's getting old."

There's that, too.
Here's a question for you guys... Which former major league player-turned-broadcaster do you like the best? (preferably besides Remy, because we hear him so much.)
And really, why should he? He should go where somebody is going to overpay him. Somebody will (hopefully not someone named George though).
i could see him doing a 2 year to stay with the sox.
true the fact that his clubhouse personality isnt a reason to re-sign him, but his production is.
Chief: I just recently bought Feeding the Monster but I haven't read it just yet. My father decided to start reading it before me, so I'm letting him finish it. But he tells me it's fantastic.
If you believe Seth Mnookin (and why wouldn't you, he actually had a desk at Fenway the whole season),
Because he's an inveterate liar and gossip-monger who is more full of his own press releases than actual information?
hernandez and darling are by far the best out there today, as far as players turned broadcasters.
This was his 58th M.L. hit.
Oh, thanks. First RS hit I guess. Oh well, yawn. :)
To revisit:
Pitches in 1st 4 IP:
Garland: 9-11-15 30
JDanks: 9-11-7 30
:>)
I loved 'Feeding the Monster' but don't know anything bad at about him. Not to say there isn't anything out there, but why exactly is he a liar, etc.?
I like Orel Hershiser. Good commentary. Especially on the pitching side, for good reason.
Player-turned-broadcaster - Al Leiter is good. Joe Girardi is also good. Can't think of too many others... but I'm still thinking.
Lieter was good during a recent post-season.
Most are crap, though, as they talk mostly in cliches (a holdover from their playing days?) and have outdated information on every single team.
I like listening to Joe Girardi, as well.
DOUBLE DONG!
PAPI AGAIN!!!
And believe it or not, 15-20 years ago, no one could touch McCarver! He was excellent!
l-girl i agree with you completely!
flash flaherty isnt that bad either.
Because he's an inveterate liar and gossip-monger who is more full of his own press releases than actual information?
Ouch. Ok, he's certainly pushy about his books, but that's a pretty harsh criticism. Where should I go to learn more about why I shouldn't listen to him?
And, dare I say it, double dong for Papi.
DONG
That is very comforting, seeing Ortiz driving the ball out past the center field wall. Very encouraging.
DING DING
DONG DONG
HOLY SHIT! PAPI!
I can't stand Mnookin, based on what I've read of his blog. It's full of - to be nice - gross inaccuracies, innuendo, unsubstantiated gossip, including about other sportswriters. And mostly full of himself.
I know a lot of people love that book. I'm sure it's very good.
Maybe the ChiSox will have to break-out the knuckleballer again. Charlie Haeger.
i hate mccarver just as much as the next guy. just saying that a leadoff man on base is not a bad thing.
I can't stand Mnookin, based on what I've read of his blog. It's full of - to be nice - gross inaccuracies, innuendo, unsubstantiated gossip, including about other sportswriters. And mostly full of himself.
It doesn't surprise me that he's like this now. You get this exclusive access deep inside of the Red Sox baseball operations programs and you write a best-seller book, and you just... don't quite know when to stop. (I really don't know the timeline for Mnookin but it sounds about right) Then he gets (dare I go southern on you guys) too big for his britches.
He hates Murray Chass. He can't be all bad.
Any updates on the Detroit delay?
Oh yes, Hershiser can be good, too.
* * * *
Yes, harsh criticism of Mnookin. A few of his posts that were brought to my attention infuriated me. Badmouthing contracts signed by other writers, all the while whining about how much money he didn't make from his book, how much self-promotion he has to do to make a penny. He also revealed personal information about other writers which was told to him in confidence.
I can only refer you to his blog. I don't know the exact posts, or if any of it would even bother you. I was looking at it from a writer's perspective. It was very unethical.
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK
Lenny DiNardo (who had a 3.13 ERA coming into tonight's play) started for Oakland against Tampa Bay.... TB is leading 12-0 in the top of the 8th.
YOOOOOUK!!!! DONG!!!
I'm liking this Youk kid a bit.
Ozzie: "I'm gonna bring in Floyd."
Great idea!!!
YOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUK!
From what I hear, all sportswriters hate Murray Chass, or at best pity him.
now that was a big dong
YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOK
DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG
Still delayed, it appears.
Yeah, McCarver used to be good! Really good. That's what's so amazing about how bad he is now.
great sac fly by kielty there..just an at bat too late.
3 dongs in one nights! slut
Tough day at the plate physically for Coco, eh? Remember he hit a ball off his shin in game 1.
3 dongs in one nights! slut
Well hopefully we won't be seeing the Slutter tonight with this big lead, huh? A BAM! Segway.
re: Mnookin.
He's not a big fan of CHB either.
I ready his blog occasionally, and it can be a bit much with the self promotion. I don't remember the posts about other writers contracts though. I usually don't read if it's not about baseball.
Ethical lapses like that are a big deal though, so I will have to watch more carefully in the future.
I really enjoyed Feeding the Monster though.
19 more runs and we match the Ranger's run total for their double header.
Almost there, Chief! :P
(you watch--once I say this they'll put up those 19.)
anybody know what youk was saying when he was grabbing his chin/beard?
I care about worker solidarity, whether that be baseball players or writers. If another writer gets a lucrative contract, I might be pesonally envious, but that helps all writers, not hurts us. If someone's being well-paid, why should I denigrate that? But if I do, I would do it privately, never publicly.
It also turned out that the contract Mnookin was complaining about didn't exist. The post was based on a rumour.
But like I said, I'm sure the book is a good read, I'm sure he's a good writer. I'm not putting him in a class with CHB and Chass!
I think a fan had been giving him shit while he was on deck, so he just wanted to make sure the fan had noticed that he had pounded the fuck out of that ball about 400 feet.
80% of people polled on the New York Daily News' website think Mike Mussina is "done"
they should take a poll here, we'll give 'em 100% :)
Weather still winning in Detroit.
(I re-read this one to make sure I didn't have any spelling or grammatical errors. Boy was my last comment poor).
Ten again, a smart baseball fan who doesn't like Chass or CHB -- not too rare.
And Remy stumbles on the word "bobble desk"!!!! You notice he never trips over his words when he's talking about his own shit?
if nyy doesn't play today, how many GA will we be? (assuming we win tonight, which we will.)
...he had pounded the fuck out of that ball about 400 feet.
LMAO.
Ten again, a smart baseball fan who doesn't like Chass or CHB -- not too rare.
good point
6 right?
I also have inside information (i.e. gossip) about Mnookin which I am not at liberty to reveal. Another writer told me. :)
Looking at 6 GA after this one is done.
six is good. 9casey's friends will need two hands to wave fingers at him.
Ortiz 3 for 4 tonight. Very encouraging.
Is anyone else unable to hear the word "dong" without thinking of "Dong Work For Yuda" from Joe's Garage?
"Bartender, bring me a colada and milk...
yes! all this hitting and lots of runs are encouraging too.
Long game, long day
The Central Scrutinizer? Anyone?
Zappa, but I only knew because of Google.
I had a friend who was completely obsessed with Zappa, but I never got into him. Maybe I should try again.
I never did either, but way back in the stone age, I knew someone who was similarly obsessed.
I got the impression (small sample size) but for those who liked him, they LIKED him!!
looks like i missed 2 slugfests. was schill was as good as the score reflects?
jeez, took me like 10 minutes to get in. i have too many passwords and don't write anything down. it's not good to rely on your own brain.
Yeah, small sample size here too. But the couple of people I knew who followed him where devoted. Or maybe DEVOTED.
Radiohead maybe a modern equivalent? After their first couple albums, they sorta gave up on the 3:00 Rock song format in favor of an experimental approach.
Wow, off topic. Sorry.
the velvet underground
the velvet underground
Good one. But more contemporary with Zappa.
There's a lot of Zappa out there and I haven't gotten into it as much as some folks I know, but the first Mothers of Invention album, Freak Out is one of my favorites (not just of Zappa). Released in '66 it's take on the hippy/freak scenes is great along with hypocrisy in general along with great lyrics and killer music that isn't wanky (like some of his later stuff).
The Grateful Dead.
Nice!
We've reached the Late-Stages-of-a-Laugher where it gets harder and harder to pay attention to the game.
i wonder how long thet are gonna wait in detroit. they must be holding out this long if they know they are gonne get in in...or its hell on the fans.
There must have been some hope because they would have called it by now. Last night for our game it was central time. But this is 10:19pm in Detroit. There's got to be some hope.
Freak Out. I'll add that to my list (along with the two book suggestions from Redsock and L-Girl yesterday.
Zappa, as I remember, was really critical of the hippie movement - especially the mind-altering aspect of it.
This in stark contrast to the Dead, who completely embraced that life/life style. I love the Grateful Dead, but couldn't stand "the scene." Same thing with Phish. Great music. The people following them around, not so much.
Gameday has Manny Delcarmen relieving current White Sox pitcher Matt Thornton.
2nd strike out for the Sox, and 2nd by Crisp. Did it look like he was limping walking off?
MONEY!
MONEY!
Detroit's current weather is stated as "Clear" Meaning... No clouds.
So they must be getting ready to start this one. You'd think. Radar looks better.
Oh geez, speaking of Money. They should some video of Eddie Money giving Schilling a guitar for some reason earlier today. Did anyone else see that?
Eddie Money looked EXACTLY like Schilling, they could be brothers. Creepy.
Zappa was very anti-drug. He was also way out in front of opposing censorship during the mid-80s and warning of the ultra-conservative (and right-wing religious) creep of US politics.
A very interesting blend of tremendous musical sophistication and potty mouth humor in his music.
it's so hard to understand the hippie culture. i went to a ton of phish shows and festivals. it's really funny/sad/entertaining to say the least to spend extended amounts of time with these people.
No Yankees radio yet.
Hot Rats is also a very good FZ album.
I know of Zappa's opposition to druggy mind-altering, but Freak Out is quite the little mind trip itself. My recommendation is asterisked by my fondness for psychedelic weirdness (though I never got into the Dead). Fair warning, but I still love it.
A very interesting blend of tremendous musical sophistication and potty mouth humor in his music.
That's why I think I should like him!
