Wang followed the TCM (5.1 no-hit innings) with six no-hit frames of his own this afternoon before leaving with a 7-1-0-4-5, 103 line.
Cano hit two solo home runs off Schilling (7-6-2-1-4, 88) -- leading off the 3rd and 5th innings -- then the MFY tacked on three more runs off Jeemer in the eighth (an RBI double from Abreu and a throwing error by Varitek (which allowed two runs to cross)).
The bats were non-existent: 13 hits in the three games, only six in the last two. And six runs in 27 innings. ... But as the true measure of the offense was not the White Sox series, neither is it these past three games. There will be panic, but my glass in (at least) half-full. A 80-54 record and a five-game lead at the end of August.
Now we feast on the dregs of the East for 13 games: the Orioles (at Fenway tomorrow), Blue Jays and Devil Rays. Then the Yankees invade Fenway on September 14.

Curt Schilling (4.11, 110 ERA+) / Chien-Ming Wang (3.95, 109 ERA+)
Random notes:
Schilling has allowed five earned runs all three times he's faced the Yankees this season. Twice, the team has won, though the right-hander was long gone on both occasions. ... the Yankees are hitting him at a .372 clip. ...In New York, even after two wins against Boston, they are talking only about the wild card.
Wang has been shaky in three starts against the Red Sox this year, allowing nearly two baserunners per inning, but still managing to win two of his three starts. ...
Bobby Abreu is the only Yankees regular to have never homered off Schilling. But with 14 hits in 37 career at-bats, he also holds a .378 average off the right-hander, tops on the team.
Mark Feinsand, Daily News:
Last night's 4-3 Yankee win over the Red Sox might not have the city of Boston in a panic-stricken uproar this morning. But maybe it kept the Beantowners from getting a full night's sleep while the Bombers were daring to dream.
Yes, the Yankees still trail their rivals by six games in the American League East, a huge margin with just 29 games remaining in the season.

"fan puts the K squirrel upside down for a hinske's called K."
Should be backwards. Terrible job as usual, Yankee fans:)
Leggett's probably at mass right now...Deus ex Machina or something...
mattysox, a bit harsh for a hapless bench player, don't you think? hinske's ok, for his role. no one else is doing anything today.
This is bullshit, man.
Line the guys up in the dugout and shout, "Show us your dongs, dammit!"
[add-free post]
Deus ex McCarver
shit
Yes, definitely harsh...momentary hyperbolic frustration...I'm just tired of guys taking strike 3 right down broadway...doesn't anybody on this team swing? Goddammit...
total bullshit.
another curtain call comin' up.
This is ridiculous.
Top Stepper right there to pat Cano on the head.
This is making me grumpy.
This is freaking ridiculous...
Tuning in late here. Is Wang throwing a no-hitter?
Hey LOOK fates! Wang's throwing a no-hitter!
betemit zipped up his jacket on the 3rd try ... curtain call!!!!!
mattysox, understandable.
sarah gates, YES.
A wang and two dongs, dammit. They've shown us theirs; we need to show 'em ours.
I'd like to see someone sometime throw a no-hitter and lose the game. I still think people need to take walks into consideration when praising a guy for a no-hitter.
I mentioned this last night, but Schilling had 1 hit, 0 walks, and just the one baserunner (on an error), and people are disappointed. They get obsessed with the status of it. The fact that you did not give up a hit. Already Wang's game today isn't as impressive as Schilling's was in Oakland, to me.
Has the squirrel gotten a curtain call yet?
Rob Murphy
we live in hope. we had tickets to a a game that turned out to be one, but didn't go... well, that's an old story. bah.
That DP happened so fast the cameras couldn't catch up. Had to rely on Uncle Joe for the DP call.
easy DP!!!
I had a chance to go to Roger's first 20K game. But I lived 2.5 hrs from Fenway and it was a school night and we were offered THAT day. Oh well. I'm sure I would've burned my ticket stub by now if I'd gone.
ugh, this stinks
Andy Hawkins lost a 8 inning no-no for the Yankees to the White Sox ... 4-0.
Several outfield errors in one inning. 8 innings becuz it was in Chic and they won.
Schilling has 4 K's to Wang's 3... and yet, it's Wang who is pitching the NO-HITTER.
Aaaaaand, Jeter's on base. WTF.
and the immortal matt young lost a no hitter for the sox.
I'm with you ish. Schilling was more impressive.
See, that doesn't surprise me that there has been a no-hitter loss. I'm almost certain the Red Sox have had one but I just couldn't tell you who.
I have to be at work at 4...now accepting ideas for excuses to be late...
Yeah!
Fuck you Stay-Puft.
traffic
dog had medical emergency
car won't start
ingrown toenail
shall i go on?
Come on, Ped. Be a lead-off hitter.
Aw, lame. That was hit hard.
This is great. I'll see a no-hitter. We are so lucky. A no-hitter!!!
Go Wang Go!
pls do not swing at the first pitch!
allan, trying a new approach?
Matt Young! That's what I meant when I said Rob Murphy...
Here's the Hawkins no-hitter:
http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1990/B07010CHA1990.htm
I wonder if Remy has made his RemDawg t-shirt pitch again to try to break this no-no up.
I loved how yesterday's no-hitter break up was on a HR, so Roger didn't get an ovation.
i'm gonna try the tantrum approach. if we don't get a hit in, now, i'm breaking everything in my room. twice.
WHAT IS GOING ON?!
come on, jere, you can make a link.
Come on Papi!!!
7/1/90, y'all can look it up.
Come on, Ortiz. Dong time.
here comes a dong!!!!
tito -- NOW is the time to bunt!
... for a fuckin hit.
god this is annoying!
You can see Ortiz is really fighting for it here.
fuck you angel hernandez.
Shite.
"frag"
Oh my Leggett this is bad...

people love to post that onion link here.

just wondering, why is michael leggett a topic of conversation here all of a sudden?
*glares at fan*
prepare to die, fan. and you speakers. lamp, you too.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
"Dongs" aren't likely off a guy who's given up only 9HRs all year. You're more likely to get a "seeing eye" groundball through the infield.
Meanwhile, Cano's drilling Schilling, albeit he's the only Yankee who's drawn blood (albeit Schilling's getting outs on some hard-hit balls).
Nice K of Ortiz by Wang. I didn't want to see the no-hitter broken after a blown no-swing call for Ortiz.
that onion is not that good. article is way too long (as they over are over there) and a super lame payoff at the end.
Yes, but it was cut off:

news/fucking_yankees_reports_nation
I figured that there were some self-described new participants here.
well, lets evaluate:
the old man has kept us innit. (albeit getting out of some trouble)
wang has pitched a no hitter thru 6 via todays pathetic looking red sox lineup (i dont mean the order)
hope we can scratch out some hits...and that tito isnt slow with the hook before it gets/if it gets out of hand.
The Leggett thing is just funny to me...Wang's ground balls made me think of that McCarver quote from the '04 Series, and that made me think of Leggett's obsession with all things McCarver...just a funny guy to pick on...
I'd go after my a/c.... but it's my a/c. I've got some tennis balls in here I could fire indiscriminately. See what gets hit.
Is "albeit" becoming the new "dong"?
Me and Matty know Leggett from our blogs.
So, I'm getting Yankee fan spam, which I'm rejecting, at my blog. The best ones are when they act like they're a Sox fan. Like, this one ripped Curt for being "washed up" and made fun of Youk hitting fourth, not even knowing Manny's injured, and then at the end says "I'm embarrassed to be a Sox fan!" If that didn't prove they were really a Yankee fan, a quick check of Statcounter shows the NY address.
albeit not as funny as the word dong
dissect away...
allan and i both piled on him the other day, on his one and only comment here.
i know how you guys know him, i was just wondering why he was now a theme.
however: there are sox fans in new york. i was one for 19 years.
Okay, we score 10 here. Minimum. On all dongs against the great Wang.
low pc thru 6:
curt - 76
wang - 87
and i for the three i've been livin in this shithole.
jere, statcounter is not reliable for that. my ip address from my workplace in toronto is in ohio. allan's is maryland. you might be right about the rest of it, but statcounter origins mean very little.
lets go offense (?)
Line: 6 6 2 2 1 4
Schilling's done the job; the Sox just haven't been able to capitalize. This might be another game in which they come up just-short or don't make use of a good start and let it get away from them late in the game.
redsock, I just didn't want to mention for the millionth time here how I lived in the NY-area for 29 years and in NYC for 2, all the time as a Sox fan. But I guess I will now. I'm just sayin', when I knew he was a Yankee fan anyway, the NY address didn't exactly change my mind.
nyc is a shithole, eh? i don't want to know what that makes boston.
teams are one thing, but cities, don't even compare.
Hithithithithithithithithithit

YES!!! YES!!! Error... WHAT A PLAY BY YOUK! Did he slide under the tag?? He slid under the tag! Heady heady play.
Come on, Doc!
GOOD CALL!!!
I don't know how the ump saw that but he was right.
Error?
E-Jete ... guess we'll take what we can get.
terrekain, let's remember to keep things civil, please.
NYC is great ... if you want to get mugged
maybe nyc was made of roses when you lived here...
i dont really care enough to argue....yawn
lets go red sox, right? or what team are you rooting for...im confused?
phrenile said: "Memo to Michael Kay: being "of the Jewish faith" and being Greek are not mutually exclusive, even if Youkilis is of Romanian extraction."
Kay was talking about Youkilis' religion which is exclusive from the Ancient Greek's polytheistic religion.
HIT!!!!!!!! YEAHHH DOC!
Suck on that, fuckheads. Now we win.
YES! F U WANG
YEAH! FUCK YOU WANG
joe grav, you don't know what the fuck you are talking about
nix33, it was not a bed of roses, never has been, never will be. it's just a great city, with its problems. not a shithole.
COME ON JD YOU BUM
Redsock: Did I say something "uncivil"? *astonished*
"NYC is great ... if you want to get mugged "
That's fucking ridiculous. You're missing out on some fun shit, guy.
Dear JD Drew,
I'll take it all back...Just get a hit...
Your pal, maybe,
Mattysox
well obviously you are very enlightened if you think boston is 'somewhere beyond' a shithole
fact: i've been in new york twice and i have gotten mugged both times
TK: no, but i sense a pinstriped vibe off of your comments. that's all.
lets go red sox, right? or what team are you rooting for...im confused?
FUCK YOU NIX33
i can love the red sox and love new york city at the same time
JD Drew is total crap....Ellsbury now
Uh oh.
I can see this call being overturned.
Torre is a whinebag, if these umps overturn this call I will go ballistic
let's discuss the game, pls.
man denying 2 tags in the same inning.
thoughts on the grassfoot?
fact: i've been in new york twice and i have gotten mugged both times
fact: nyc is not even on the top 10 when it comes to most crime in US cities. if you had bad luck, that's it. it doesn't mean shit about nyc.
He'll be out here. He was on the grass.
correct call -- yook way out on the grass.
we're not the ones who took a pot-shot at the city this team represents
and FUCK the umps
What the hell is going on? Gef and C are not being very helpful...
yeah the game.
this fucking sucks. he was out of the basepath, but man, no breaks.
Redsock: I'm looking around at the comments around me and I feel a little put-off by be singled out there redsock ;).
Anyway, Youkilis is clearly out of the baseline...he's out. The right call.
not the ones who took a pot-shot at the city? go back through recent comments and see who called nyc a shithole. no one said anything before nixon33.
This is where I don't like Youk very much. You should know that you ran on the grass and went out of the base path.
Just get back in there and get one run, uh? Now Tito's gonna get run here... Come on, guys. Get back to the game.
this is a boston red sox blog right? you are surprised someone said something negative about new york?
Remy was saying that Yook wasn't out b/c he was past A-Rod before he hit the grass, but that it was a "really difficult call."
i deleted a nix post, which may have been hasty.
please discuss the game.
the game.
tough one.
lets see if we can gets some runs!
sorry i brought up the whole city thing, i really dont fucking care.
joe, shut up and talk about the game.
i didn't say i was surprised.
i didn't like what i heard and i replied.
i love the red sox. and i love new york city. and i hate rudy giuliani, who is not nyc, he is a person.
redsock said: "TK: no, but i sense a pinstriped vibe off of your comments. that's all."
Good call there too because I am. However, I'm also a Curt Schilling fan so the best outcome for me would be:
1) Schilling has a good outing
2) Wang has a great outing
3) Yankees win
All conditions are being met thus far ;)
The gun at the Toilet can't be right...Wang throwing 96mph?
this is a boston red sox blog right? you are surprised someone said something negative about new york?
it is also a red sox blog written by someone who had 19 wonderful years in new york city and still thinks it's the best city on earth.
so you insult nyc, you insult the place i called home for close to half my life.
now shut the fuck up about cities and talk baseball.
So now we get the Joba the Hut and Rivera again. What a world.
do you think it woud have been better for youk to stop in his tracks and make arod either chase to tag him...or throw to first this way its either 2nd & 3rd or 1st & 2nd.
just and afterthought. ive seen other players do it to force the guy to make a play....
any thoughts?
"this is a boston red sox blog right? you are surprised someone said something negative about new york?"
That's what I don't get. You think Mets fans--citizens of NYC--don't hate the Yankees, too? A "New Yorker" is not "a Yankee fan," it's someone who happens to live in New York. They can be a Sox fan, even.
Nix- didn't see the play, just heard it, but I like the theory...force the fielder to come to you...then it's 1st and 2nd with only one out...
this is frustrating... i really thought we were breaking through, there... ugh.
"So now we get the Joba the Hut and Rivera again. What a world."
Joba the Slut hasn't proven anything, and we're the team Mo consistently has trouble with.
do you think it woud have been better for youk to stop in his tracks and make arod either chase to tag him...or throw to first this way its either 2nd & 3rd or 1st & 2nd.

Certainly a better play because it takes the DP away and keeps two men on. With 1 out, mind you. Instead of 1 on with 2 out. There would have been another batter after Varitek, provided he struck out anyways.
We couldn't have asked for better from Father Curt...at some point the sticks have got to get going...
Someone at SoSH called him Joba Chambermaid.
Funny thing is that here in DC I have to explain to my boys that we despise the *Yankees* -- not New York City or its residents. Then again they are all under 10 years old, so YMMV. :)
Yeah, Nix, if he's fairly sure he's gonna be out, he can keep the double play at bay. It makes sense to me, but I doubt I'd think of it if I were in that situation. There's also a reason I'm not on that field.
Glad to see Schilling get into the 7th, heck he might get into the 8th. However, the Yankees are seeing him a 3rd and 4th time around despite his low pitch count. Tito would definitely be pushing his luck if he brought out Curt in the 8th regardless of the results in the bottom of the 7th.
Gagne? I'd love to see some tack-on support for Wang.
As for the Yankees, they're set-up with Viz and Joba.
Joba the Slut hasn't proven anything, and we're the team Mo consistently has trouble with.
You're right. We can certainly get to them, but it's just harder to do so.
Alright kids, gotta go to work...good luck, Go Sox...
man, im not ok with the way things are going.
father curt ( i like that)
chambermaid = even better.
Well, Schilling certainly hasn't had to spend many pitches on Cano, at least.
"Father Curt" stolen from 'Faithful,' I think...
Jere said: "A "New Yorker" is not "a Yankee fan," it's someone who happens to live in New York. They can be a Sox fan, even."
Tell me about it; my brother sent me a fancy Red-Sox shirt for my birthday in 2004.
schilling is doing a hell of a job. run support please
I assume that your birthday is in November or December...?
what was the whole slogan going into this series?
"we only need to win one" right?
jeeeeez, lets go.
Schilling has retired 7 in a row and is at 88 pitches, but I wouldnt be surprised to see Jeemer in the 8th.
If he comes out for the 8th, one baserunner should be it. (it better not be a dong)
torre replacing the gold glover at first with andy phillips. what happened to late inning D?
Impressive season stats from Joba thus far. This series' bullpens are - at the very least - even.
pizza time! let's grab a slice or two.
is keilty dead?
I can't stand listening to these YES guys anymore. Will someone please hit the damn Hutt?!
we're watching on mute. made it into the 5th w/ YES, but couldn't take it anymore.
A-Rod lucked out on that, lifting the glove up early. That could have scooted between his legs.
this sucks... i don't care what the lead is, getting swept by NY is a big deal.
we badly need the september callups to add some depth --- and hopefully get JD Drew out of the lineup as much as possible
DUSTY!!!
Nice job, Dustin!
pedroia is so good...
come on David. come on David. come on David.
Dusty's great! I enjoyed the article Redsock linked to.
They want to avoid using Kielty. He's still quite sore. MRI was clean, though. He'll probably be out another day or two, I'd think.
Yeah Pedroia!
BIG TIME for a DONG.
Base hit to get Big Papi up. Come on, oCoC!
oh
Coco
nm
joe grav: DAMN FUCKING STRAIGHT.
Come on Coco, then...
ococ > aboj ?
coco co. must manufacture rbi.
i agree with nix and grav on that one.
redsock said: "torre replacing the gold glover at first with andy phillips. what happened to late inning D? "
You're being sarcastic, but the Yankees, of course, are very strong at first base.
Giambi: Great offensive Lefty and capable fielder.
Phillips: Great Defensive Righty and capable hitter.
Betemit: Better than average power switch hitter, but principally a Lefty. Converted SS.
NY 1B:
whatever.
rubbish
damn
WE ARE ON THE VERGE OF BEING SWEPT
lets go!
11 shutout innings for Joba and it forces Ortiz to lead-off. I'll be dissapointed if I don't see Jeemer in the 8th, he needs the work not to mention a SERIOUS correction to his stat-line. The top of the Yankee order is capable of doing that.
So, Ortiz, Youk, and Lowell in the 9th. Let's get Oki a clean 1-2-3 and try our best against the bat.
if we don't come back in this game, it is extra extra extra important that the yanks don't win the wild card. a yankeeless october, all i want for christmas.
Can you believe it? Robinson Cano is the difference in this game. 2 mistakes. 2 runs. And here we are.
jere: i am perfectly capable of deciding which comments to approve and which to delete.
feel free to ignore those comments which annoy you.
that's what i do (most of the time).
How is terrekain being accepted on this blog?
I don't think I've ever seen Mariano Rivera come in to close three Red Sox games in a row before, let alone get all three saves.
How is terrekain being accepted on this blog?
I am reading his comments as they come in and deciding whether to post them or not.
If I feel he has crossed the line, I'll act accordingly. Non-Sox fans can post here, as I have said before.
Jeter - 4 for 4.
As long as you don't get fooled on the motion, Jeemer has "only" a good fastball with a better-than-average split. It's not something you can stamp an under-two ERA on once MLB hitters get used to it.
Jere, I think his comments are within the rules I've set up.
Admittedly, NYY fans will have a higher standard to uphold, but I'm fine with it so far.
you can be the biggest optimist in the world and still have to admit this was a sad display of offense this series.
the yankees staff is not this good.
we got/are getting embarrased.
I agree with nixon, wtf is going on with our offense?
you can be the biggest optimist in the world and still have to admit this was a sad display of offense this series.
the yankees staff is not this good.
we got/are getting embarrased.
yup. it sucks.
personally, i'm not going to brood on it, i'm gonna leave it behind as soon as the game ends.
but it sucks. a sad display for sure.
Well Okajima is in the same company as guys like Glavine, Maddux--even Kason Gabbard. You could also make the argument for San Diego's Chris Young, who all can survive on fastballs in the upper 80s and rely on hiding the ball and your other pitches. And Okajima usually is a one-inning guy, as opposed to four others mentioned above, among other pitchers. Look at Schilling today, allowing just two runs with a high 80s fastball.
It can be done. It's risky to pitch to major league hitters without the gas, but it can be done.
3-1 Yanks.
FINALLY Jeter doesn't get stranded.
Does anyone know if Tito would use Papelbon in a 2 run game considering lack of work? I don't know his tendencies that well.
you can be the biggest optimist in the world and still have to admit this was a sad display of offense this series.
while we still have the 9th, i agree. i'm going to take the long view -- 5 GA.
i dont understand that. we got swept. via the yankees. we had a chance to put them away, and did the complete opposite.
5 games yeah i know...but jesus christ.
awesome the Yankees just clinched the AL East. oh wait they are still 5 games back.
Man, I feel like I have a target painted on my back in here ;)
Not that I wasn't expecting it: part of the fun of posting on baseball blogs (including the ones that don't feature your own team).
no pap, imo. even tho he has not been working much lately
snyder up.
Orsillo said earlier "The Yankees needed this series in a big way. Much more than the Red Sox" (or something close to that).
I'd have to agree. 5 games isn't 8, but it's still a healthy lead at this point in the season.
This is ebb. Flow will return (or maybe Flo).
i dont understand that.
i know. i don't understand the way many fans act. everyone watches the game differently.
chief, i agree.
(but go seattle)
TK: I suppose you do!
I do not allow any trolling or baiting here and most NY fans who have visited can't help themselves.
(Actually, some people have been trying to bait you, and I have deleted them.)
...
fragging fucking game
right...and gor forbid we voice our OWN opinions!
haha
so is everyone ok with the fact that we got swept?
im not.
nice arm, capt.
It's just something that hangs over your head. Getting swept. By the Yankees. It's these games that do make me feel nervous about October, with or without the Yankees. There's still Seattle, Anaheim, Cleveland, Detroit, and then New York. So three of those teams would be in the playoffs. It's Seattle, Detroit, and New York that really concern me. Though if we played Seattle we'd have home-field advantage. Safeco is a house of horrors.
And so is Yankee Stadium, for that matter.
