G112: Angels 4, Red Sox 2

Curt Schilling (4.20, 108 ERA+) / Jered Weaver (4.00, 107 ERA+)

Schilling returns tonight after missing seven weeks with tendinitis in his right shoulder. The Red Sox went 24-18 while he was out. John Farrell says Schilling pitch limit is about 90.

Schilling faced the Angels back on April 14 and allowed four hits over eight scoreless innings.

David Ortiz is 4-for-5 against Weaver. ... The Angels are 64-46 and lead the Mariners by 3.5 games.

MFY tied with the Tigers for the WC. At least until the Tigers find a way to lose to the Devil Rays.

I think I'd rather face the Yankees than the Tigers in the playoffs...although it does bring the Sox-Yanks-meet-in-postseason stress that drives me up a wall. I'm not sure. Both those teams have good starting pitching, iffy relief, and stellar offense, if I recall.

Remove the "good starting pitching" from MFY and pretty much. I'm more fearful of the tigers than yanks though. But I do I hear ya on the postseason stress...

Final on the Civic Holiday in Toronto:

MFY 5, Jays 4

Yankees with a 4-run sixth got to the Jays 'pen (namely Downs)

Aaarrgh! Rex Hudler on MLB-EI. I cannot listen to him plus watch him caress that goddam baseball. I would pay good Canadian dollars to watch Wily Mo squeeze Rex's head like he squeezes that baseball.

allan said...

not sure how long i'll last with the sound on.

Jere said...

Papi just swung after 5 straight balls. Never a fan of that.

Jere, I believe i am catching on to your philoshpy of baseball..And I concur....

s1c said...

Well, we could give you the Remdawg product updates if that would make you guys feel better!

Jere said...

The one time a runner doesn't cover his face on a steal attempt, and he gets hit in the face.

You could even see O-Cab covering HIS face on the play.

allan said...

god, yook is ugly.

9casey said...

Is he allright?

Jere said...

0-1 pitch was low and away.

Jere said...

He'll be okay.

Jere said...

Schilling takes all this time, comes back--it was almost a given Lugo would ruin the FIRST batter for him.

Jere said...

"Edgar 2: Electric Bugaloogo."

allan said...

that's it. mute after 2 sox batters.

laura says hi!

Jere said...

Watch for the AA joke here.

nixon33 said...

lugo sucks.
is that super-agent scott boras on the stands behind the plate?

Jere said...

Does look like Boras, on the left.

allan said...

fsn on mlbtv too - fuuuuuuuuck.

Jere said...

You're missing bloody sock talk. This was the mound where he first got that injury--in the ALDS.

nixon33 said...

man i hate it when direct-tv doesnt have the boston feed.
also direct tv blacks out anything to do with the sox thats not a game like what if (did anyone see that pedro thing? was it good??) the remys and the like (not that i would want to see sox appeal).

allan said...

You're missing bloody sock talk.

no, i'm not.

if they say it was fake, make sure you email edes!

Jere said...

It was okay--I hadn't thought of that--that this was the mound he was on, and that he hasn't been back since 10/5/04.

s1c said...

Actually this is his first start since that game. He made two relief appearances in 2005.

allan said...

Bonds fouled out to third in his first PA tonight.

Jim said...

Hi to Laura! Happy Civic Holiday, guys, a great Ontario tradition to have a day off in August for no particular reason. We need one in Feb. too.
Schill looks like he's got a clue. Now get the bats out, boys.

Jere said...

"Actually this is his first start since that game. He made two relief appearances in 2005."

Thanks. Terrible job by DO/Rem for not pointing that out.

Jere said...

Wow, catcher didn't realize he was going.

Jere said...

Yeah Youk! HR Puffenstuff.

Jere said...

NESN shows closeup of pitcher on Ortiz' grounder. Terrible.

nixon33 said...

if by ugly you mean the awesome mofo that just hit a 2-run dinger, you are correct!

gojohn said...

Yea!!!!! Up 2-0

s1c said...

WTF - MBM

gojohn said...

Manny gets the boot....

Jere said...

Umpire's ego 1, Red Sox 0. Steinbrenner's wallet, slightly lighter.

Jere said...

Manny did nothing visually to show up the ump anywhere to the point of it being ejection-worthy.

allan said...

we need a transcript of what he said. he said a lot of words.

s1c said...

I have a feeling that manny said the magic words.

allan said...

so the tigers won, up .5 in the WC.

Jere said...

Magic words don't apply when you're walking off the field having not even paused for more than two seconds to argue in the first place.

Jere said...

The point is, the crowd and the TV audience saw nothing but Manny make one "I didn't swing motion," and then walk away.

allan said...

moss in left.

#44

Jere said...

That is so crazy.

Jere said...

Don't use your bare hand, Schilling!

s1c said...

Magic words are Magic words and you don't say MF to the umps.

Every time the Sox visit Anaheim, some one is going to get tossed.

Jere said...

Did Remy just say "pitchers are taught to knock the ball down any way they can"? Every other time I've seen this, I hear, "pitchers are taught not to use the bare hand." (Even though instinctively you want to.)

allan said...

manny never says anything to the umps. this was the equivalent of a state of the union address.

he said a LOT.

great shot when he got to the dugout, the entire bench was staring at him, eyes wide.

Jere said...

"Magic words are Magic words and you don't say MF to the umps. "

I don't know, I think that's only during an actual argument. If you're just walking away, having not even argued in the first place, you shouldn't get ejected from a game, no matter what you say.

Jere said...

But he wasn't standing there arguing, he was walking away....

s1c said...

Remy said they are taught not to use their bare hand, but it is tough for them since it is usually an instinctive reach.

Jere said...

Okay. Sounded like he said they ARE taught.

Shoulda been a DP.

allan said...

If you're just walking away, having not even argued in the first place, you shouldn't get ejected from a game, no matter what you say.

What the fuck?????

Jere said...

Wish that pop up had stayed in play. Schill's breathin' heavy.

Jere said...

"
What the fuck?????"

How did he show up the ump?

Jere said...

That's what I'm talkin' about... and Moss's first mistake.

s1c said...

WTF - why is Moss throwing to third?

gojohn said...

damn....

Jere said...

Saw this coming. Should've already had a guy up after getting hit in the friggin hand.

allan said...

I don't think he did. He clearly said something. He was furious. Mayne NESN didn't show the right angles.

You know, sometimes a Red Sox player does something wrong and gets tossed for it.

Jere said...

NESN showed Manny make the "I didn't swing." The camera stays focused on him. He walks, walks, walks, and it tossed.

Jere said...

Glad to be out of that inning with just 2 given up. I almost always have faith in my team, against all odds, but once in a while you look at a guy and he's got DLowe face and it's a given he's about to implode. We need lots of runs this inning.

allan said...

They obviously didn't show his mouth, then.

He was mouthing off angrily for a while as he crossed over the plate and walked away, turning back to the ump several times as he was yelling.

The ump made the you're gone signal at about the same time Manny waved his bat, in effect saying "ahhh fuck you".

s1c said...

He walks while spewing expletives at the umpire the whole time.

Schilling doesn't have a d-lowe face.

Jere said...

He had it right before those two shots he gave up.

Jere said...

Can we send in a pinch brain for Lugo's brain?

Jere said...

Red Sox: If you get runs here, I'll give up Marshmallow Fluff for the next hour.

Jere said...

Moss on deck.

Jere said...

Jesus tap dancing Christ

Jere said...

At least I get the effing Fluff.

allan said...

weaver was a lit-tle too excited about that play.

was flo running hard all the way on that?

Jere said...

You could barely see it--may have slowed briefly at the point it deflected off 3Bman's glove.

9casey said...

Did anyone mention if Curt is on a pitch count tonight...

Jere said...

I saw on XB I think that it was 90. On pre-game, though, they specifically said how they didn't know what it was.

Jere said...

Shiny new helmet for Moss.

s1c said...

Francona said Schilling's pitch count is common sense.

9casey said...

s1c said...
Francona said Schilling's pitch count is common sense.

Who's he gonna borrow that from?

s1c said...

Who's he gonna borrow that from?

Thats why Mills is his bench coach

allan said...

Varibelli.

Jere said...

Farrell said 85-90. In the Herald. Wasn't XBases.

s1c said...

frack

Jere said...

2 on, 1 out, last 2 innings. No runs.

Jere said...

very nice!

allan said...

s1c said...

Need to get some runs here.

Jere said...

nice, Youk.

Jere said...

Oh no, Renee Russo's there. They will not stop talking about this development.

Jere said...

Red Sox: LOB Champs, for period covering 1901-2007.

Jere said...

Bullshit call. You could tell it was foul without the replay.

nixon33 said...

great glad that rehab worked out

Jere said...

Wow, I've always wondered about this...why can't a fielder purposely bobble while running in all the way to the infield. I guess they havea rule to prevent that. (Not that he did it purposely, I'm just sayin'.)

Jim said...

How does that cliche go? Something about needing perfect command because you don't have the stuff to get away with mistakes. Shit. Although a bit of buzzard luck (to quote he who must not be named) involved.

Bats must get going.

Joe Grav said...

ouch

allan said...

Wow, I've always wondered about this...why can't a fielder purposely bobble while running in all the way to the infield. I guess they havea rule to prevent that.

They used to. I read that Sox RF Harry Hooper used to bat the ball in the air with his glove until he was near the infield, since the runner couldn't leave third until he actually caught it. It is now against the rules, obviously.

allan said...

Mrs. Garret down by way of the K.

Jere said...

I probably could've guessed there was a rule that you couldn't intentionally do it, but I figured if it was clearly accidental--I mean, especially if you bat it and it goes behind you--you had to wait til the catch was completely made before you could run.

I wonder what Mirabelli would've done if he'd been on third in that situation...

Jere said...

Why do I get the feeling that at some point in my life, the Yanks (probably A-Rod) will do that in the field in a really key situation, and the umps will call the guy out?

2 on, 0 out. This time we score.

s1c said...

Freaking NESN goes black!!!!! AAAAAggggh

Jere said...

For all these calls they're missing, they should have to allow Manny back into the game....

Jere said...

My NESN's fine, but I did have an Emergency Alert System deal to start the inning.

s1c said...

Freaking cable company - everything went black!

Jere said...

Tek fly out to left. 2 on, 2 out.

Jere said...

1-1 to Coco.

Jere said...

Low, 2-1.

s1c said...

everything is back now

Jere said...

Frustration-causing half-wave at a pitch for strike 2.

s1c said...

frack

allan said...

what a bunch of pathetic fucking at-bats. just fucking horrible.

Jere said...

Question: Why wouldn't you swing at a pitch right down the middle in a very, very important situation that we're all staying up very late for?

Jere said...

Even if touching third got you a run, we still would've amazingly not scored that inning.

tim said...

time to kiss this one goodbye.

thatdietcokegirl said...

coco not swinging at strike 3 was fucked up. right down the middle, no swing. nice work pal.

uh, this page is in russian for me. don't quite know whats up with that..but, yah. all russian ;)

Jere said...

Don't say that

allan said...

Laura wants to know why everyone freaks out if a batter "shows up" a pitcher, but when a pitcher like Weaver or Beckett yells and bangs his glove and pumps his fist after a K, he's called a tough competitior.

Jere said...

Is scoring two in an inning harder than coming back from a three-game deficit in a 7 game series? Even if it's AS hard, this one's not over.

Jere said...

Batters do get pissed if pitchers do that--sometimes. But, yeah, good point.

Jim said...

Castig just said that Angels have kept 138 ninth-inning leads in a row. Time for the reverse lock.

thatdietcokegirl said...

good question.
i think cause the pitcher is like alexander the great, and the batter is just another warrior on the battlefield.

thatdietcokegirl said...

Castig just said that Angels have kept 138 ninth-inning leads in a row. Time for the reverse lock.

we just had the reverse lock and we blew it.

thatdietcokegirl said...

oh wait, 9th inning leads. hey, i'm there :)

allan said...

i wish there was more taunting and pointing and trash talking btw pitcher and hitter.

Jere said...

Here we go, Papi.

allan said...

Surprised that after the DI, they don't BBI Flo and go after Moss.

Jere said...

Moss looking to become a true Yankee.

allan said...

god, frod goes nuts yelling at the sky. what a dooche.

Jere said...

Yeah, you just struck out a guy in his first game. Stop celebrating like you're---Jered Weaver. Stop pointing at your fake-ass god. If there was a god, she'd definitely be rooting for the rook, not you.

Final score prediction: Jays 17, Yanks 14

And yea, wtf was up with frod celebrating like he'd just won the world series, by striking out a rook in his first MLB game...pointing to the heavens. puh-leeze!
