G113: Angels 10, Red Sox 4

Another shitty game drops the East lead to 5 games -- which is still the largest first-place margin of any of the six divisions.

Panic? New York better panic -- they have only 49 games to play.

Our magic number is 45.

***

Tim Wakefield (4.55, 99 ERA+) / Joe Saunders (3.10, 138 ERA+)

RedSox.com:
Saunders continued his high-caliber work in dispatching the A's across 6.2 innings, holding them to two earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two. A strike-thrower who keeps his defense involved, Saunders also keeps his team in games. The Angels are 7-0 in his starts since he opened the season with a 4-3 loss to Oakland. He has faced Boston once for a no-decision, going 5.2 innings on August 22, 2006, giving up two unearned runs in a game won by the Angels in Anaheim.
The Yankees (Fat Billy) play in Toronto (Josh Towers) tonight.

The MFY trail the Red Sox by 6 games in the East and are only .5 GB Detroit in the wild card hunt (Seattle is 1 GB).

too bad as we came out looking pretty hot tonight with the bats....oh well.

Wow, one decent thing. Can we please show some life and put together a beautiful comeback? That would make me so happy.

exciting double play to keep us close.

mattymatty said...

Hey, do you guys remember four outs ago when we were winning 4-2? Its now 9-4, and I'm pretty sure the Angels didn't have a damn thing to do with it. Talk about shooting yourself in the balls.

Jesus people , Deep Breaths ...Light one up and refrigginlax

mattymatty said...

Good suggestion, but not going to happen. Sorry.

allan said...

Slugo will start us off.

Jere said...

I'm the type who likes to point out non-Sox fans posing as Sox fans, and I really hate that, but I have to vouch for heybluu here, as his/her comments at my blog have always suggested they're a genuine person. If I'm wrong, you fooled me, heybluu.

9casey said...

People are throwin shit, and killin announcers and talkin about 78 , my word reel it in.....

Jere said...

Doesn't mean I agree with his her '78 comment......:)

laura k said...

Jesus people , Deep Breaths ...Light one up and refrigginlax

Good advice.

Trolls saying 1978 in the middle of all that didn't help.

Come on, comeback time.

Jim said...

The amazing thing was that the game was even televised live in Ottawa back then. This was pre-cable days and the Expos were the only team in the land. Hockey play-offs were still on so it was on an American channel. I had to ask for it in the peeler bar because all the normal bars had hockey on. (Those were also my bar days, in case you wondered).

mattymatty said...

Do you guys know what Lugo is hitting on the road this year? .167... wait, lower now. he just grounded out.

laura k said...

Oh sorry, I didn't see your comment Jere. If you know this person, I'm sure you're right. Then he/she is just stupid. :)

9casey said...

Woti. Whats a peeler bar?

s1c said...

Think Foxy Lady for a peeler bar!

mattymatty said...

I would pay MLB.tv double what I'm paying now if I could listen to NESN instead. This is intollerable. Neither of these guys has a damn clue.

allan said...

mentioning 78 is pretty moronic.

any sox fan saying that seriously deserves to have 2004 erased from their brains.

mattymatty said...

Thats it gang. Keep the midnight oil burning, but I'm too pissed off to watch the rest of this.

s1c said...

Of course some of my best memories of Vancouver were the peeler bars that stayed open til like 4 a.m.

Every sailors dream!

9casey said...

s1c said...
Think Foxy Lady for a peeler bar!

They had a Foxy Lady in Lincoln, Didn't they Jere?

Jere said...

You know, even if heybluu is a fake, I have a spot for him for going out of his way to listen to and transcribe a "Smurfberry Crunch" commercial for me. He just said something, kinda, uh, "that I don't agree with." (And he mentioned his wife in that old comment, so he's either a guy or a lesbian in a state where gay marriage is legal.)

laura k said...

Mattymatty, haven't you heard of the mute button? Whenever we don't have NESN on EI we almost always watch on mute. Why drive yourself nuts?

Heybluu said...

Thanks for the kind words Jere, didn't mean to rile anyone up. They can believe whatever they want about me. I have been a Sox fan all my life and always will be. I probably voiced my frustration in the wrong way bringing up.....that year. Sorry to anyone who was mentally scarrred by that.

mattymatty said...

And yes, 1978 is as irrelevant as 1977 or for that matter 1987.

Sarah Haendler said...

Yeah, if I hear about the damn relay one more time, I'm liable to scream.

Jim said...

Thanks s1c. Or the Brass Rail, where ARod is probably holding court as we type.

laura k said...

I guess Mattymatty packed it in before he read my sage advice about Mr Mute.

mattymatty said...

I have the mute on, but I like to hear the crowd. that way I can do more than just watch the game. Plus, I actually like announcers, or at least the concept of them. Its an oportunity to add to the enjoyment of a great game, but no, these f'ers have to ruin it.

I really need to go to bed...

9casey said...

We might want to sent the whitecoats over to check on Matty

Jere said...

"Mattymatty, haven't you heard of the mute button?"

This is what people would ask me when I'd complain about Michael Kay. And I'd tell them, "Same reason I listen to pop music occasionally---so I know what to make fun of..." It's like the dog, pressin' the thing, or whatever....uh, like the human told "the plate is hot" but they keep touching it. It's like a toothache. Or carwreck. Or cultural trainwreck. You know.

mattymatty said...

At this point I'm just hoping someone fouls a ball off and it goes into the Angels booth and bounces off one annoucers face into the others leaving them both screaming in pain...

I'm feeling a bit better after that thought.

laura k said...

Bluu, no one believes or doesn't believe anything about you. Most commenters here just can't stand that kind of talk. And in the middle of such a frustrating game, it's gonna set everyone off.

Sorry for screaming at you.

Although I stand by what I said. :)

tim said...

The problem here is that people are giving up on this game for the Sox...the faith we had on Mother's Day has been shaken.

It's great to say "Blah blah the yankees are playing shit teams" - but the Sox are playing good teams, playoff teams, and LOSING!

The Sox went through the same teams that the Yanks are going through now, and the Yanks are doing better than the Sox. Dating back to July, Sox dropped 2/3 to KC, and have been dropping 1 to Chi, TB, Tor, Bal.

I'm definitely in concerned mode, almost ready to hit the panic button now. Right before the AS break, that sweep in Detroit was unsettling. The way that Anaheim is exploiting the Sox is also making me uneasy. Sure, they did well against the White Sox and Orioles, but who gives a shit - the reason I'm going to get into panic mode is because they are playing teams they could see in the playoffs and losing. They did alright against Seattle, but they really need to pick it up.

thatdietcokegirl said...

i personally would feel better if the angels would all just leave the park and we could continue to play and score runs at our own accord.

allan said...

bluu, i was 14 in 1978.

but honestly, what the hell do a handful of games from 30 years ago have to do with now?

did the sox-yanks games from 1948 have anything to do with 1978?

it all sounds like more of CHB's tales of ghosts and goblins.

and i fucking hate it.

laura k said...

Mattymatty, Allan says the same thing about crowd noise.

Jere, I don't get that at all. Toothache, car wreck, Michael Kay - all are to be avoided.

Friggin west coast games. Game hasn't even started and I'm falling asleep.

I stayed up last night hoping to see Bonds break the record, so now I'm exhausted.

If I stay up it will be a lousy game, but if I go to sleep I'll miss a gem.

(Yes, yes, good night.)

allan said...

matty sounds like me. would happily pay double for 100% nesn.

i'd pay triple for just the crowd noise.

laura k said...

Human touching a hot plate and keeps touching it? I don't know anyone who does that. I don't know why Jere would listen to Michael Kay or Mattymatty to these horrible Angels announcers. No one can afford that much high blood pressure.

Jere said...

"I'm definitely in concerned mode, almost ready to hit the panic button now."

Tim--best record in baseball. If the Yanks had won a few less games over the last few weeks, I don't think you'd be using the word "panic." Or if the Yanks had been way up on us, and just now fell behind us to 6 back. I could be wrong.

Jere said...

"Human touching a hot plate and keeps touching it?"

There was a funny SNL skit about it.

laura k said...

Yeah, and I'm still awake. My 2nd west coast game in a row, a record for a non-playoff game.

(Maybe it has somethng to do with us not drinking.)

thatdietcokegirl said...

i saw that jere! 'hot plates!!11'

Jere said...

Until I moved up here, I would've pain my entire cable bill for just NESN, no other channels. The fact that that's not an option--to just choose a channel, be willing to pay for it, and get it--is a travesty. What year is this? Give the people what they want! You know you can!

9casey said...

On the wagon are we?

thatdietcokegirl said...

manny doubled and i was like 'meh'

allan said...

after 2004 (and mothers day, why not?) don't you feel like any game is within reach?

i do.

they don't always come back, but i always believe it is possible. i didn't use to feel that way. that is part of the legacy of 2004.

laura k said...

A temporary wagon, yeah. A couple of weeks. This is day two.

Uh, not that I'm counting or anything.

Jere said...

"Give the people what they want! You know you can!

Just mean the technology is there, we're willing to pay. Cable/sat. companies--make it happen!

Beginning 3 weeks from tonight:

3 games at the Toilet.

That's gonna be fun!

Wait a second, 9Casey... is this lousy game my fault for staying up? :)

That will be chb's lead story in the Globe tommorrow......

tim said...

I'm sick of the best record in baseball excuse - I realize that, however, if they played like this all season, it would not be the case. If the Sox had won a few more over the past few weeks...if, if, if. Basing my feelings solely on what I'm observing, I'm feeling uneasy about the way this season has been going since the Detroit sweep before the AS break.

PS: "Bootcheck" heh heh heh heh heh

Good job, Ococ with the foul at demarlo. Next time take out his 'waving Lowell around' arm.

laura k said...

A funny SNL skit? I can't imagine what that might look like.

Must be post-Larry David. :)

Jere said...

The weird thing is, some people just are negative. Some are just positive. Nothing seems to change it. I like to think even the most negative person would've seen 2004 and been changed. But no. Personally, 2004 made perfect sense to me because I always thought the Red Sox would win the World Series every single year:)

laura k said...

Ha, CHB lead, good one.

Sarah Haendler said...

"they don't always come back, but i always believe it is possible. i didn't use to feel that way. that is part of the legacy of 2004."

Well said, sir!

laura k said...

Jere, I would agree with you, except our Redsock changed from negative to positive after 2004.

Heybluu said...

You are absolutley right redsock, 1978 has nothing to do with this year, just like 2004 has nothing to do with this year. I always hated tht "curse" crap also. Again, I am sorry I brought it up. I actually read blogs like this one and Jere's to get me feeling more positive about the team. It has worked all year long while this lead has gone from 14 to 6. Now I am not as convinced this thing is in the bag like everyone else seems to be.

Jere said...

That's why I said "some" people.

allan said...

That asshole CHB has got to be loving this game and shrinking lead. Nothing but fun for someone who hates the Sox and hates Sox fans.

laura k said...

Btw, best record in baseball is not an excuse. It's a fact.

9casey said...

and Jere you grew up I assume with a lot of yankee fans reminding you constantly about the bad times

nick said...

Thank Goodness! We almost had a chance to score again. I'm glad we can keep getting out of those situations.

Jere said...

Even all my friends were Yankee fans--there were no other kind of kids! (Except the Met bandwagoners in the mid to late 80s.)

laura k said...

I thought you meant some people are one way and some people are the other, but everyone is one or the other and it never changes.

Nome sane?

But I got you now.

Jere said...

Yeah I Noytch Sane.

thatdietcokegirl said...

tdcg--nice. You seem to know what I'm talking about a lot. Some would find this scary.

if it has to do with pop-culture, i'm kinda there most of the time.
(that is a little scary i guess;))

9casey said...

I hear ya, the one good thing about my friends who are yankee fans is that they are all Italian...And their moms could cook..I would take a lot of a abuse for some nice veal parm......

tim said...

This is why I used the example of people not having faith in a comeback anymore - if Tito really wanted to come back in this game, why would he replace the best hitter with a rookie with 1 game experience?

I personally thought they could've done it, I always have - I completely agree with redsock's post re: post-2004, but when substitutions like Ramirez-for-Moss are made, it shows that the goddamn coach doesn't even think they can do it!

laura k said...

No Tim, it does not show that. It shows Tito manages differently than you would like him to, differently than you think he should. It doesn't mean he thinks his team won't win.

9casey said...

He didn't put in the fat kid holding up the light pole.....they are all major leaguers, granted they are all not Manny but major leaguers nonetheless.

allan said...

Our largest lead was actually 11.5 games (May 27-29), but I guess you meant lead over the CFY (which was 14.5 on May 29).

The lead has gone up and down.

May 29: 11.5
June 14: 7.5
June 24: 11
July 18: 6.5
July 28: 9
August 8: 5

The Yankees were 14.5 GB on May 29, and they closed to within 7.5 on June 14, but it went back to 11.5 in only 9 days.

It could easily be back to 10 in 2 weeks. (The Yanks play the Tigers 7 times this month.)

Jere said...

"the one good thing about my friends who are yankee fans is that they are all Italian"

Me, too! All of 'em. The weird thing is, I'm Italian on my mom's side, so I didn't have the vowel-ending last name like of of those guys.... One of those friends ha a grandpa who told a grandpa-ish joke: "Why are so many Italians named Tony? To New York. ToNY."

laura k said...

Yeah, I didn't mean lead over NYY, I meant in the division. I knew it was never up to 12.

9casey said...

Later peeps.........see ya late night tommorrow

tim said...

No Tim, it does not show that. It shows Tito manages differently than you would like him to, differently than you think he should. It doesn't mean he thinks his team won't win.

If you wanted to come back and win a ball game, who would you rather have up there? Manny or Moss?

Jere said...

Odds are we finally beat the Angels and/or the Jays finally beat the Yanks tomorrow. From there, we go to Bal, and then back home.

Yanks go to Cleve, then have Bal, but then have Detroit, LA, Detroit before taking on us. (while we have TWO D-Rays series.) I think we're gonna gain over that stretch.

thatdietcokegirl said...

the yankees have a tougher schedule ahead than us..(haha, don't you feel kinda desperate when you start to calculate schedules?)
we should be focused on this game. this very next pitch.

laura k said...

I'm out too. G'night all.

Take heart, we're still in 1st place.

tim said...

On another note, has anyone here ever been on the right field roof deck? If so, what's the view of the game like?

s1c said...

Sounds like a lot of us are going night night.

Don't let the bed bugs bite.

allan said...

he put moss in for manny with one inning to go and trailing by 5 runs (now 6).

and moss would be the 7th batter in the ninth.

i have no problem with that substitution. playing the 9 starters all day every day while letting his bench rot is what the gerbil did in, ummmm, year, errr, you know.

Jere said...

L-Girl, don't go! Your facial hair guy is on!!!

Jim said...

We'll all feel better about these guys when we watch them grind out 4 hour games against the Yanks at the end of the month, because we've seen them do it. The only thing that really jolts me awake from a sound sleep is an easy ground ball to Lugo with the game on the line ...

Jere said...

The comeback begins. Albeit it in a negative way. Still 2 outs to go. Ooh, Yankee killer Darren Oliver in.

Jere said...

"The only thing that really jolts me awake from a sound sleep is an easy ground ball to Lugo with the game on the line ..."

This is my biggest playoff worry. That Lugo, you know, plays.

nick said...

alright. I came to this game feeling pessimistic and it stuck through. Tomorrow, I'm ready to face more positively.

Can't say this game was the most fun, but thanks for sharing.

allan said...

and nesn puts up the may 29 standing and then now. way to feed into the myth that sox fans are worried. which fox and espn can now parrot for weeks.

fuck you nesn.

allan said...

another aftereffect of 2004:

i won't fume about this loss for 3 hours before falling asleep.

i'll brush it off, get some rest, do some writing tomorrow, and tune in tomorrow night, ready to see a win.

amazing!!!!!

tim said...

Off to bed, optimistic about the future, concerned about the present.

Let's salvage one tomorrow after Halladay smacks Wang around, then fly back with a .500 west coast trip, and rip Baltimore.

Congrats Barry, and goodnight all.

Jere said...

Yanks will soon be forgotten when the lead goes way up again.

Jim said...

Night folks. Think I'll have EEI on-line for background noise later this morning while perusing the morning news-sites. The level of idiocy from both sides of the mic promises to be legend.

Heybluu said...

You know redsock, you and I agree I one thing. The losses don't absolutly Kill me like they used to since 2004. And I will be back tomorrow hopeful that they can get a win combined with a Yankee loss. Jere, I hope you are right about the upcoming few week, time will tell. Goodnight all.

allan said...

bluu, it's a great feeling.

i'd rather have a 10 game lead than 5, but hey, that's where we are. better than being 5 down.

laura k said...

Panic? New York better panic -- they have only 49 games to play.

YEAH BABY!

laura k said...
