G114: Red Sox 9, Angels 6

The bats rescued Jon Lester (3.1-8-5-3-3, 93) and the Sox moved 6 GA in the East.

Mike Lowell reached base five times: single, three doubles, walk;

Dustin Pedroia had two singles, one home run, three runs scored;

JD Drew and Julio Lugo each had two hits; and

Brandon Moss got his first career hit and scored his first career run.

Tonight's game tied the Angels record for longest nine-inning home game: 4:02 (also set on September 30, 2000 against Seattle).

***

Jon Lester (5.09 ERA) / Dustin Moseley (4.43 ERA)

JD Drew will play center field tonight.

And Brandon Moss gets the start in right.

It's hard to argue with WMP:
I want to be traded. I want to play. They know I want to play. I'm surprised I wasn't traded before the deadline. ... They want me to perform, but how can I perform when I have just a couple of at-bats, then they take me out, and I don't play again for days? They said I would be given a chance to play, but it hasn't happened. ... I am not a guy who has caused any trouble, but I want to play.
Check out Pena's home/road split this year:
       PA AVG OBP SLG OPS
Home 90 .138 .233 .200 .433
Away 74 .324 .378 .632 1.010

Remember last summer when some of us (moi, aussi) here at JoS were trying to mount a palace coup to get Tito to insert Wily Mo into the 5-hole? Those were heady days. They should have listened--the opportunity was there and he was ready. Wily Mo seems like such a genuine, likeable guy, I hope somebody (in the NL) gives him a chance. When he connects, he's pure fun. The other times ... well...

Moss getting the start in RF since Drew is playing CF...

Patriots Film said...

he should've been traded already, but it looks like he will be very soon anyway. I don't care if he's the second coming of david ortiz for the royals, because it wasn't going to happen here. time to face the facts and suck it up if he's awesome, right?

sparky said...

Let's not forget they traded away a starting pitcher for him. They wasted a good opportunity with WMP in my opinion.

allan said...

They could spare Arroyo, though.

And in 2007, he's a league average pitcher who is allowing a career high number of baserunners. And who I think the Reds were shopping.

But the deal didn't work out, that's for sure. It's time to let him go for *something* and move on.

laura k said...

Arroyo is long gone. There's no use even bringing him up. Some deals work out, some don't. Time to cut bait and move on.

How WMP performs once he leaves Boston is also irrelevant.

Why did they call up Moss and not Ellsbury? i know Ellsbury was hurt but he was activated I think on Monday

laura k said...

I thought they wanted to leave Ellsbury put so he can play every day. Like they did with Yook.

laura k said...

But Ellsbury is almost sure to be called up in September. Yay.

Jere said...

8-2 Jays! All off the great Wang, all earned! Hold this lead, Canada!!!

Yeah ,but we need someone who can score from first on a sac fly now....

No Papi in the lineup tonight.

The Hinske's had a girl! Natasha! Not really--but close! Ava.

Jere said...

Did someone say "in play, run (s)"? Yes! At least 11-2 Blue Jays. Now 12-2 as they walk in a run. I can't keep up with this crazy Gameday. (A Jeter error has helped this inning along.)

Jere said...

In play, run(s)! Single, 14-2 Jays in the sixth. This time, no Yankee immediate comeback.

You should have heard the excuses coming from Singelton.."when you are in a game like this you play back on your heels, a play he would usually make.blah , blah, blah,He also made a terrible realy throw earlier and the praise flew about how he and Matsui have mastered that play, right after they blew it.....Now thats blather.......

Jere said...

Matt Stairs walked twice in the same inning. Glad I'm not hearing the excuses. It wouldn't be a Jeter error without Yankee announcer telling us "you never see that."

It's unbelievable. I think they also believe he shits strawberry ice cream...

Jere said...

Yeah, Kaat was neutered for his neutrality.

Man, I love it. Jim Rice: "When the manager tells you you need a day off, you say, "No, I'll tell YOU when I need a day off."

Exactly. Look where all the "resting" has gotten us. Our big lead isn't big anymore. It's time to let them play, Tito.

Jere said...

Seriously, as soon as we found out Papi couldn't play, I'd have gone right back to Coc and said, Okay, we do need you after all. And I'd expect him to say, Sweet, get me out on that field.

This forum is good enough for me...simple, everythings in one place. Each blog post is like a thread.

tim said...

im sure this has been discussed....but what the fuck is with the lineup??????

Relax, it's just Ococ and Flo. Flo's shoulder's been bothering him and Tito decided it'd be nice to give Crisp the day off. Nice guy, considering he was mowed down by a moose on an ATV a few days ago. It probably had something to do with his little tantrum yesterday after his first AB and the K.

tim said...

Moss getting some work early...they must not teach you how to throw accurately in Pawtucket!

allan said...

....but what the fuck is with the lineup??????

i don't know. plus we have tomorrow off.

wmp - drew - moss in the OF worries me a tad.

Jere said...

"Would've turned a DP on DP anyways."

He would've had a different approach with a runner on first, though.

Hey! Weird DP there!

tim said...

Wait a second, Windows Media Player in the outfield? Goddamn, I didn't realize that!

laura k said...

Isn't this game thread a discussion forum?

It's enough for me too.

allan said...

ha ha figgy!

the ol' 5-3-5

tim said...

Fuck ya!

laura k said...

Pencilneck is one scary looking dude.

Re Sid Vicious, yes Jere, I think you are the only one.

Jere said...

I did wonder if the Coco "rest" involved the tantrum. Tito said it was because he's fried out there. Like I said, though, once Papi had to come out, I go right back to the completely fine Coco and say You're playing. You have a day off tomorrow anyway.

allan said...

John Simon Ritchie

If he doesn't live up to being Houdini, we can call him Sid. Because then he'll be pitching as well as Sid played bass.

laura k said...

It's just a day off. It won't make much difference in the course of the season.

allan said...

Lester sweatin' like Giambi out there. Or is it raining?

laura k said...

He can sweat like Giambi. As long as he doesn't sweat like Yook.

Jere said...

Okay, so it's a little off, especially in the nose. But I look at him and I keep seeing Sid.

tim said...

Thanks. I don't get anything from the white abyss. Just abyss. I swear.

You can't give up on it too soon....highlight when it's the text cursor and wait till it turns back into the pointer. Then you're golden.

Anyway, wtf just happened? I walked from my computer to NESN TV, with Lowell on second...By the time I got to NESN, it was already on commerical....

laura k said...

"Maybe? A little?"

Other than spiky hair, no. But shit, he can be Sid anyway.

Only right now we need him to be Houdini.

laura k said...

Maybe it's the stupid trackpoint thingy, but what can I tell you, there is nothing in that abyss but abyss.

tim said...

I'm exhausted - going to watch a couple innings on NESN feed, followed by heading upstairs to computer and NESN.

Will check in later, peeps.

laura k said...

For godsakes Lester, throw the ball! Throw. The. Ball.

Jim said...

Just because this is the last regular season West Coast game is no reason to make it last all night.

laura k said...

I hate seeing a pitcher - if he's ours - look afraid of the batters. Lester seems so timid. Awful.

mattymatty said...

I'm late to they party.

Yessir, its game time!

stefan said...

On gameday, that last sac fly was in the center field bleachers...

mattymatty said...

Drew caught it on the warning track.

laura k said...

Forget about Sid, we might have to call him Trachsel.

allan said...

if he's being sid, shouldn't he be working a bit faster?

maybe it's his plan to make the angles' pitcher's arm get cold from waiting???

laura k said...

Drew made a great catch.

allan said...

lester:

2 innings
3 runs
7 hits
51 pitches

Jim said...

Would it be fanboyish to wish for Moss to channel Melky? After all, the Milk-dud didn't have eye-popping ml numbers. Shit. Robbed. Git im next time, Mr. Moss.

laura k said...

Oh that was nice. Three quick outs for us, now Lester can pitch for another half hour.

This is annoying.

Jere said...

"Out by a step" Lugo lives up to his, uh, nickname. He's the fastest guy in history to ever get thrown out by a step every time. Or something. Just seems like he should beat beating out more balls.

mattymatty said...

The Angels announcers are now saying that Gary Matthews is a great player and his over-the-wall catch of Coco Crisp's almost-homer was "routine."

God I hate them so.

Jere said...

Drew had a long, whether it was cancer or any other type of injury. I say we give this kid time. Being good right away and then shitting the bed later after the manager starts trusting you based on only a few games--it's so--Yankees. Lester will be the Pedroia of pitchers.

mattymatty said...

Lester just threw one at Anderson's head for ball four. According to the announcers, this means the "Angels are getting to Lester."

By the way, thats Anderson's 10th walk of the year. You pretty much have to throw it at his head to walk him.

laura k said...

Sure we'll give him time. He's just frustrating tonight, is all.

"Drew had a long, whether it was cancer or any other type of injury."

What's this mean?

laura k said...

Mattymatty, what happened to your mute button?

Jere said...

Good job, offense!

allan said...

why didn't matthews catch that routine fly from manny???

mattymatty said...

MANNY!!

Jere said...

Meant Lester when I said Drew that first time.....

Jere said...

Remy said that was a "slow-motion swing" as if it looked any different than any other Manny swing.

Jere said...

We're tied.

laura k said...

A long layoff? It's true.

Yeah, we're hitting! AFT.

mattymatty said...

The mute button sucks. I wanna hear these lousy homers whine when we kick their butts.

I also wanna hear the "lets go Red Sox!" chants in Angels Stadium. I can promise you when the Angels come to Boston in a few weeks there won't be anyh pro-Angels chants.

nixon33 said...

OH MY GOD!!!! WE ARE SHOWING SIGNS OF LIFE

Jere said...

Let's win this and make EEi talk about the Celtics tomorrow!!! (Because nobody wants to hear happy Red Sox fans. Apparently.)

mattymatty said...

Like that! Nice hit by Drew. Theres the guy we signed. Tie game... for now.

tim said...

Hells yeah! This is the shit I'm talkin about! Battle back sox!

(picked a good time to fire up the laptop)

Benjamin said...

I'm too lazy to look up the stats, so I'll just concede that Lester must be a better starter at the moment than Batshit. At least we're back in this thing now.

Jere said...

Right, a long layoff. Sometimes I say Drew when I mean Lester, and sometimes I say nothing when I mean layoff:)

Jere said...

Right, I'd rather be lookin' at a future of Lester than a future of Tavarez.

Jere said...

Yeah, Lowell!

laura k said...

Yeah!! The doctor is operating.

tim said...

The Red Sox are a playing advertisement for the GAP right now

allan said...

Mind The Gap.

The LCF gap, that is!

Jere said...

Two doubles for Doubles.

Benjamin said...

Fuck yeah.

laura k said...

Lester over Lips for sure. But I still think Lips has a role in the pen.

Jere said...

I have a sudden urge to shop at the six-game lead store.

laura k said...

Varibelli get a hit? Too much to ask.

Jere said...

Oh, that's right, it closes when Wily Mo comes up.

laura k said...

Wait for the 8-game lead store and I'll go with you.

Jere said...

If Coco doesn't get a day off for no reason it's 5-3.

Benjamin said...

Well that sure ended fast.

mattymatty said...

Four is good, but I'd have like to have had that fifth. Wily Mo... man! Wily Mo... Gotta get the ball to the outfield, Wily Mo...

Jere said...

Yeah, but Wily Mo's ball had the *potential* to reach the outfield. And that's what makes him great.

laura k said...

"If Coco doesn't get a day off for no reason it's 5-3."

Are you serious?

laura k said...

Ugh, you lost me there tdcg. I think they're both wankers.

James Hetfield, YUCK.

mattymatty said...

mattymatty said...

nope. never happy. well, that fifth run would have made me happy.

In all seriousness, I don't have ridiculously high standards. I can even handle losing. I don't like it, but I can handle it. What I can't handle (besides ridiculously bad announcers) is a team who gets beat in every phase of the game through little fault of their opposition. That has been the Red Sox to a tee in this series up to this past inning.

laura k said...

Yeah, but it's one inning, of one game, out of 162.

I know, you can't help it, we all react differently to these things.

mattymatty said...

Man, when Lester attacks the strikezone he's just terrific, but you just can't walk a bunch of guys and be a successful big league pitcher. He's gotta throw the ball in the strikezone.

mattymatty said...

I-girl... you're right.

Oh, crap. Double steal. A good throw by Tek gets him, but the throw was high.

thatdietcokegirl said...

l-girl, yes. but i couldn't stop the kneejerk image-search-reaction to compare their facial features ;)

tim said...

Jere said...

""If Coco doesn't get a day off for no reason it's 5-3."

Are you serious?"

Coco can hit a fly ball to the outfield to get the run home.

thatdietcokegirl said...

trouble.

mattymatty said...

Shit. Thats gotta be it for Lester. Thats so disapointing. He was so good at the beginning of that inning, but it just totally got away from him.

Jere said...

Why do you think Brandon Moss is a wanker?

laura k said...

"Coco can hit a fly ball to the outfield to get the run home."

He can, but you don't know if he would have.

You're obsessed with a guy's day off as if he's the lynchpin of the whole team.

mattymatty said...

Tim: Please tell me Tavarez isn't coming in again.

Jere said...

Not his fault, Tito gave him the day off--when he didn't need it, and when the other option is Wily Mo Pena.

laura k said...

Moss, wanker, I only meant looks-wise. I don't have any opinion on the guy personally. Just the pics tdcg posted.

Jere said...

The point is, we're always resting somebody--and in games where it's close, and the offense is that close to getting what would've been the key runs to put you over the top, it's extra frustrating.

laura k said...

But how do you know he didn't need it? You claim he didn't need it, but how would you know.

mattymatty said...

FRANCONA? YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! Seriously, what the fuck? Is everyone else in the bullpen sick?

laura k said...

Yeah, we're always resting somebody. Geez, you'd think these guys were human or something.

Jere said...

I bet there's a better chance Coco gets a runner home from third with less than two outs than there is of Brandon Moss being anything but a fine young man:)

laura k said...

I should get out of this game thread. I can't stand the negativity. See y'all.

mattymatty said...

It does seem like Francona is always resting someone, and on a day when Ortiz is out due to injury it seems a lousy time to give someone time off who isn't hurt. Assuming he isn't hurt.

9casey said...

Jere said...
The point is, we're always resting somebody--and in games where it's close, and the offense is that close to getting what would've been the key runs to put you over the top, it's extra frustrating.

You may not feel that way in October....Look at a team like the Yankees the last few years never rest relievers or postion players and fizzle out early in the playoffs....

allan said...

You're obsessed with a guy's day off as if he's the lynchpin of the whole team.

Well, he is the best fastball hitting guy on the roster!

Should we start calling Jere "Zim" for his insistence of always playing the 9 regulars?

mattymatty said...

I-girl: I hope I didn't drive you out. Apologies if so.

Jere said...

"Yeah, we're always resting somebody. Geez, you'd think these guys were human or something. "

So rest them all at once! Give up one game if they must have this rest! Instead of risking EVERY game! They're being babied. All these guys. I'd be out there every day for free, and that's true, not just "something people say," even though we all say it.

Jere said...

Call me Zim? You said the magic words. Ejected!

9casey said...

That's sexy!!!!!!!!lips

mattymatty said...

We all appreciate it, Jere, but I'm not sure thats a desirable outcome.

allan said...

The point is, we're always resting somebody

We don't have a 10 man roster. It's true.

9casey said...

Now we just need 1b,1b,2b,2b,2b again and all is good in the nation

Jere said...

Dude, I'd rather have me out there than Wily Mo.

allan said...

But I said it as I was walking away from you. I win.

Jere said...

Jere said...

Jere said...

Jere said...

They never definitively answered in pre-game, or I missed it--is Papi available to pinch hit tonight?

Jere said...

The shot was looking down the bench, so I factored in some extra space. 7.5 sounds good.
