G118: Red Sox 3, Devil Rays 0

Wakefield (8-2-0-2-6, 100) started this gem off with six no-hit innings. Snuffer pitched the ninth, walking one and striking out two.

Lugo came through in the leadoff spot, going 3-for-4. He singled in the first and scored on Ortiz's double to dead center. That was the game's only run until the seventh when Lugo singled after Mirabelli and Hinske had walked with two outs. Lowell drove in Manny in the eighth.

Of Wakefield's 100 pitches, 72 were strikes. He went to three balls on only two Rays -- the two guys he walked (Iwamura in the 4th, Navarro in the 6th). Wakefield threw a first-pitch strike to 21 of his 27 batters.

It's Boston's 10th shutout of the year, tying them with Seattle for the most in the American League.

***

James Shields (4.32, 106 ERA+) / Tim Wakefield (4.81, 94 ERA+)

Well, if they're proud of being the second place team with the biggest games back then that's their own complex.

From Extra Bases:

" Sox groundskeeper Dave Mellor has outdone himself.

In centerfield, Mellor has mowed the lawn into the shape of the Boston Red Sox "B" and has placed it inside a patch of grass shaped like home plate. Pretty impressive. "

Sounds cool...I wanna see this.

My virgin ears (or in this case eyes). Am still waiting to see the B in CF.

WEEI - all the hosts today were of the belief that Buchholz will be starting one of the games on friday.

Anything less than 5 and 2 on this homestand is unacceptable.

Is the sky falling? Tom Caron of NESN wants to know.

Jere said...

Just saw on NESN that Comcast in Waterbury got NESN. Does this mean 9casey gets the games now? (Sorry if you've talked about this before, I was away for three days. In Baltimore, of course.)

Congrats to the people of Waterbury. That's what I was talkin' about. Since you're in NESN territory, you always have at least a chance of getting NESN. Fairfield County: Still screw-ewed after all these years....

allan said...

Remy says he actually batted 3rd once.

Actually, he started 6 games in the 3 hole, all in 1975.

Was 6-for-23, .261.

s1c said...

JERE - Are you the one who keeps on seeing the Bot Blown Saves?

Jere said...

"For once the best pitcher for an opposing team will pitch against them."

You're right. But when a Sox fan caller brought this up on the FAN the other day (as I was driving through), he was passed off as a "crying Red Sox fan with nothing else to complain about."

Jere said...

Sean was the Papelbon blown saves guy.

s1c said...

Ok- thought it was you. Don't blame me for any rants you see about you then! (j/k)

Jere said...

The only game he pitched in this weekend was the only one I went to, and he didn't blow it anyway, so I don't know what you're talkin' 'bout. I was wondering what happened to Sean, though....

Jere said...

laura k said...

"Just saw on NESN that Comcast in Waterbury got NESN. Does this mean 9casey gets the games now? "

Yup, he announced it yesterday in a thread somewhere. The bestest part (to me) is Comcast said it was customer demand (pressure)!

s1c said...

0 for 5 already RISP.

laura k said...

Maybe it was Sean we were thinking of. We couldn't remember who kept seeing the blown saves.

laura k said...

Oops Jere said that already (re Sean), I missed it.

Jere said...

"The bestest part (to me) is Comcast said it was customer demand (pressure)!"

And I'm happy for them. But just makes it even sadder that one entire section of New England with lots and lots of people could all stand at the door of Comcast at once, and there'd be nothing they could do, until mlb changes the territory lines. (Hint to mlb: Make the dividing line for people who get NEW ENGLAND Sports Network the border of NEW ENGLAND.)

s1c said...

s1c said...

And I'm happy for them. But just makes it even sadder...

MLB has nothing to do with the cable company offering NESN in FC. Its all about the greenbacks.

Jere said...

"MLB has nothing to do with the cable company offering NESN in FC. Its all about the greenbacks."

MLB and the teams set the territories where each team can be seen. It has nothing to do with the cable companies.

Jere said...

All they'd have to do would be to add NESN to Fairfield County. Not asking to take YES or SNY out. Just let NESN in as well.

allan said...

Wake looking good: 4-0-0-1-3, 49.

Jere said...

The Sox want that territory, but it's set up so they can't get it, as it's only part of Mets and Yanks-land.

allan said...

wake:
36 strikes
13 balls

s1c said...

The territory is for the over the Air stuff, Cable is a different animal. Unless that is in writing somewhere official I will politely disagree.

Comcast does not want to pay NESN the $2.00 per subscriber in FC, especially since they are paying that amount to the METs and YES.

Jere said...

http://www.boston.com/sports/nesn/aboutus/FAQ/

That's NESN's FAQ. Read the first answer. Fairfield is not considered part of their territory, despite being in New England.

CaKeY said...

s1c said...

I blame Castig and Remy for that hit, talking about no hits at the end of six is a sure way to blow the game.

Shields, first time he has ever pitched six innings vs the Sox.

Jere said...

NESN ruins another no-hitter, at least for me--because the non-CF cameras are a tiny bit behind the CF one, so you could tell by Orsillo's voice when he said "right side" really loud, that it was headed for the hole. Maybe only people with me with Spidey senses or whatever are affected, but it really stinks. (In the Schilling one, you could hear Orsillo say "through" before we saw it get past the fielder.)

Jere said...

So was it a liner off glove or grounder or what?

s1c said...

grounder. If he comes up with it they might still be playing.

Jere said...

Gameday still hasn't put the run on the board. Are they writing out a treatise about the run-knocking-in off-pitchers'-glove ability of Jeter? Lemme guess: It can't be taught?

well, Giambi isn't chasing the all-time HR record... I think that's the real difference maker there.

Jere said...

"well, Giambi isn't chasing the all-time HR record... I think that's the real difference maker there"

Oh, okay. So it's okay, then. The 2003 ALCS meant way more to me than any individual record, but that's just me.

Jere said...

Gameday finally says "fielder's choice" to Roberts. I guess it went off Bradford's glove and over to Roberts who couldn't do anything with it. Well, you can't teach that, either.

I know you are more likey pissed off about the hit then the steroids, My ,and I empasize my, disdain for Barry Bonds has nothing to do with the color of his skin......And if 2003 still ticks you off how about '88 Canseco and McGwire had 4 hr's in that sweep...

just yesterday I said I wasn't going to watch baseball for the next 2 weeks. That lasted 0 days.

There's plenty of nights from November to February to not watch baseball.

...you've got that right RedSock. I can't stay away anyway. But lately, it's been keeping me up at night. I try hittin' the wife to relax a bit, but she don't play that.

R-Diddy said...

9 Casey....did Bonds admit to using under oath?

Jackie said...

Oh, okay. So it's okay, then. The 2003 ALCS meant way more to me than any individual record, but that's just me.

Hey, I totally agree with you about the ALCS (or that gem Wakefield pitched against RJ in 2005 that we lost 1-0 on a HGHiambi HR) meaning more to me than the HR record. But Giambi is, I think, unilaterally reviled among Red Sox fans (and A's fans, for that matter).

Elsewhere in the country, I think people care less about the 2003 ALCS ;) and more about the record. I still don't believe that people particularly like Giambi, but they don't actively hate him because he's not in their faces, destroying Precious Records and the American Way of Life. Or whatever it is that Bonds is doing.

allan said...

It's my understanding (which could be faulty) that Bonds has not admitted knowingly using anything.

s1c said...

Jere - About Aces -
Sox have faced the following 4 times this year - Halladay, Pettitte (5 if you count relief).

3 times - Wang, Trachsel (only pitches like an ace against the Sox), and Ohka.

Yankees - 4 times nobody
3 times - Schilling, Wakefield, Garland, Kazmir, Contreras

Only Kazmir would count as an Ace, and the Sox will face him for the third time tomorrow.

Meanwhile - no CC Sabathia, Santana 1 in two series, etc.
Yes I know I am retentive about some things.

R-Diddy said...

I didn't think he had admitted anything either. Didn't Schilling comment that he cheated on his wife and his taxes?....I think that is the only proven cheating that he has done.

9casey said...

Bonds admitted to using the cream and the clear, which are none steroids.......

9casey said...

none=known

allan said...

If it had been proven he cheated on his taxes, wouldn't he be paying big time fines or something? Has that happened?

Also, cheating on his wife is not against the law. (But I do believe he is the only MLB player to ever sleep around, so ....)

allan said...

The only thing he's guilty of as far as I can see is not kissing the media's ass.

R-Diddy said...

Gotcha Casey. I thought there was some technicality there with the Clear/Cream stuff. Did he end up saying that he didn't know they were steroids? Tomatoes...Tomah-toes.

s1c said...

Bonds admittance was that he thought the Clear was Flax Seed oil. etc.

In other words, they told me it was this which was ok, later I found it was steroid.

As for the Wife, comment by Schilling - His quote was "well, he admitted to cheating on his taxes and his wife"

allan said...

Bonds admitted to using the cream and the clear, which are none steroids.......

Link?

Again, I don't follow this very closely because I don't give a shit, but I thought he said he may have used them, but did not know exactly what they did (uh-huh) or something like that.

AgGain, you might think this is bullshit, but he is techincally not admitting knowingly using roids.

allan said...

In other words, they told me it was this which was ok, later I found it was steroid.

That sounds right.

As for the Wife, comment by Schilling - His quote was "well, he admitted to cheating on his taxes and his wife"

Wasn't that in a book on Bonds and not an actual admission in public?

R-Diddy said...

When is MLB (and other leagues...NFL) just going to start f'ing testing for 'roids, HGH, etc.? Are they that worried that their "product" will be de-valued?

s1c said...

Of course all of this admittance is also "leaked" GJ testimony. Let me see the transcripts!

I also agree with Sock - I really don't care, the hypocrisy by the owners and the players on this issue makes me want to puke.

allan said...

Leaking them was illegal, as well.

Correct..........I beleive he saying if you think this is true , build your case and come and get me..........which I think they are doing...Balco ran their business somewhat like bookies with strange notes and unclear markings on calenders so I believe it has hard for them to make the case..........All the while his buddy Greg Anderson still sits in a jail for contempt of court of charges, I believe he has been in jail for 6 months....

s1c said...

R-diddy - NFL has been testing for years for Steroids. Once abuse was linked to health issues the Union and the Owners got together and hammered out a deal.

Remember last year there were a couple of suspensions for roid use including the LB for the Chargers.

Recent quote from Jim Bouton, author of ball Four: He said in his day (1960s) if someone had come along as said "take this, you'll win 20 games but it will knock 5 years off your life", pitchers would have stampeded to use it.

He also talked about him and Whitey Ford rubbing some drug for horses shit on their arms. I know you know this, but this shit ain't new.
