G123: Red Sox 10, Angels 5

The runs are coming in bunches for the Sox in this series.

Down 5-0 in the fifth, Boston gets six in the fifth (four on a long grand slam from Ortiz) and four more in the eighth.

After Schilling (6-8-5-0-3, 85), it was White Flag, Jeemer and Snuffer (retiring nine of 10 batters).

***

Jered Weaver (3.85, 111 ERA+) / Curt Schilling (4.06, 111 ERA+)

Schilling lost to Weaver and the Angels 4-2 on August 6, in his first start since coming off the disabled list. In six innings against the Orioles (August 12), Schilling did not record a strikeout. In his last start, Weaver held the Twins to five hits and two earned runs in 7.1 innings.

It's likely that Bobby Kielty will be called up (and Jacoby Ellsbury sent down) before tonight's game.

Also: Fat Billy and the Brownshirts (5 GB) face Detroit's Chad Durbin at 4 PM.

Well, I'm back...

Got into Newark yesterday and got a rental car, drove down to Camden/Philly for a concert (Ratdog/Allman Brothers) - what a fucking awful drive, apparently in Jersey you can only make a left every 5 miles or something.

Anyway, great concert, back in Newark now for the night and flying back tomorrow afternoon. Going to head into the city now, my first time in NYC. Should be a good'urn, eh!

Maybe I'll make a trip up to the Bronx around 7pm and laugh at Yankee fans after the spanking they'll receive this afternoon, if all goes as expected.

tim said...

Oh, and re: yesterdays games.

Fuck ya, Buchholz. Fuck no, Gagne. wtf man?

At the show yesterday, I found out the score was 5-4 in the top of the 9th and knew Paps had closed out the day game, so figured the Gagger would be in. I honestly went back to the hotel expecting a loss. And boy was I right.

Oh and one more thing - I got an email back from that dooshe

Had a good laugh. What a baby.

here it is in full:

"i have no idea what your problem is, why you need to resort to personal insults. so you feel differently. obviously, if you read my piece, so do i. but if you listened to any talk radio, read the newspaper columns, you would have known that when gagne blew the second game, there was a certain amount of hysteria in the air. even if you don't agree, this is a dispute about baseball and doesn't justify the kind of nasty, immature putdowns. you are obviously a baseball man more suited to talk radio than civilized discourse. mark"

I'll let you guys make your own comments on it :P

nixon33 said...

come old man schill...show yr glimpse of greatness.

allan said...

Tim: Thanks for sharing the reply. I was gong to suggest anyone anyone mailing him be polite, but fuck it.

I like how he bases his Sox hysteria argument on listening to people on talk radio, then dismisses you by saying you're more suited for talk radio. So he admits basing his entire column on uncivilized discourse.

Anyone watching FB's short outing against the Tigers?

Come on Tigers.

Joe: I don't know if you went back to the faith/unbelief post, but I was quoting Dylan, not Bush.

Joe Grav said...

I know you weren't quoting Bush, but I jokingly pointed out that it sounded like something Bush would say. "Yer with me or yer against me." Anyway, I was just kidding.

Woo, Tigers sac fly: 1-1

allan said...

Just opened up Gameday to check on while I work. And I see in play, run(s) scored for the Tigers!

Only a sac fly -- still, tied.

nixon33 said...

and fatsos pitch count is up in the fourth!
nice, make him work!

allan said...

Bush was actually quoting Jesus when he said that. A while back, someone went through a ton of Bush's terrorism speeches from 01-03 and noted numerous references to scripture (many of the exacting revenge sort, thus having Bush put himself in the position of God metting out punishment on his enemies). It was both creepy and interesting, certainly giving strong evidence to the idea of US-backed religious crusade (a phrase which Bush has slipped and used a couple of times).

Lord knows what this means! :)

Insurance runs are always good, but all I'm saying is that if "MFY always with the comeback" were true, they'd be 122-0 right now.

We'd be 49 GB!

nixon33 said...

dont be a douche-bag, they have a lot of come from behinds this year due to a-rods great season. youre making me argue for the yankees...which in itself is rediculous.
all im saying is that YOU CAN NEVER COUNT THEM OUT. dont be so fucking litteral, jeez.
go look up yr stats now...

allan said...

When scoring 1st:
NY: 47-20, .701
Bos: 52-17, .754

When opponent scores 1st:
NY: 21-34, .382
Bos: 22-32, .407

Trailing after 6 innings:
NY: 4-42, .087
Bos: 9-43, .173

Trailing after 7 innings:
NY: 5-46, .098
Bos: 7-44, .137

Trailing after 8 innings:
NY: 3-49, .058
Bos: 2-42, .045

The Sox are better in every single category, except they trail slightly in "after 8 innings".

dont be a douche-bag

Not a good way to start a post.

allan said...

all im saying is that YOU CAN NEVER COUNT THEM OUT. dont be so fucking litteral, jeez.

then type that. i'm going on what you posted. you know, your actual words.

go look up yr stats now...

"There is such thing as an over-reliance on facts."

nixon33 said...

whats the saying? "numbers: you can make them say whatever you want." to quote mazz.
listen, all i know is that i watch every sox game AND every yankee game, and to ME it always seems that any oppositions lead is never safe when it comes to the yanks. i can attest as to how many times ive been pissed cause a team blows a lead vs. them.
happy?
and stop caring so much about what i say.

back to reality, anyone hear about tavarez starting on sunday? is that to have a better pitching matchup vs the yanks?

laura k said...

Why would anyone write something and then say "stop caring so much about what I say"? Unless they're admitting their words are meaningless blather. Always a possibility.

nixon33 said...

cause hes putting WAAAAAY too much stock into the littlest thing i say.

4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. J.D. Drew, RF
6. Jason Varitek, C
7. Eric Hinske, 1B
8. Coco Crisp, CF

5. Gary Matthews, CF

maybe you guys should both take a deep breath.

maybe (just a friendly suggestion, i swear) you shouldn't say "don't be a douche-bag" to the owner of the blog.

allan said...

i can attest as to how many times ive been pissed cause a team blows a lead vs. them.

I posted the actual times they have come back in 2007. There was no massaging of numbers. The facts are the facts. (And blown leads are not the same as losses.)

and stop caring so much about what i say.

When you call me a douche bag on my blog, I'm gonna take an interest.

If you disagree with the records I posted, debate the records. Don't resort to name-calling.

allan said...

Thanks for the lineups. Not sure why Tito always seems to sit at least two starters when he rests someone (Lowell and DP tonight).

Just a reminder for everybody as I head back to work:

1. Be civil. If you disagree with something, discuss the comment, not the commenter. ...

1a. Continued inability to act in a civilized manner will result in your being banned. If you are banned, you are banned forever, even if your later attempts to comment conform to the rules. It's not my job to teach you how to act like an adult.

2. If you make a claim, someone may ask you to back it up with some evidence. Do not be offended; you are not being attacked. We like facts.

nixon33 said...

ok i will be civil.

allan said...

Thanks. Perhaps last night is still bothering us both a tad.

nixon33 said...

ehhh, its just the nature of the blog...you voice yr gut feeling as perspective and someone challenges it as facts. theres nothing factual about feelings, and theres no feelings in facts.

s1c said...

I assume that Cash is going to catch Tavarez tomorrow. Tek will be one tired captain at the end of this game.

Re: Tavarez - Wakefield and his magical mystery tour in the Trop is the reason for this start. Wake is like 9-0 (that is a guess) at the Trop.

Matsuzaka, Beckett and Schilling vs the Yankees - anybody seen who they are going to throw!

laura k said...

you voice yr gut feeling as perspective and someone challenges it as facts. theres nothing factual about feelings, and theres no feelings in facts.

Heh, I was just emailing something to that effect, but you put it more succinctly.

It's a familiar exchange. Fan gives perception, "stathead" oriented fan counters w/ numbers, fan hears that as a negation of his perception.

Stathead-fan might be correct, but in the context of the emotional part of being a fan, it doesn't matter.

Plus stathead-fan dug up those very facts in defense of his own emotional reaction. "What? The Yanekes come back? No they don't, they suck and I'll prove it!"

This concludes the Psychology Today portion of our programming.

allan said...

I'm not trying to be a know-it-all. I'm just noting that the Yankees do not come back and win all that often in the late innings, even though it seems like they do (or you remember those games more because it pissed you off).

Also, their record doesn't change the way you feel while watching this (or another) game. Plus those records don't take into account "trailing after 5 innings".

5-2 after 7.

s1c said...

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate the Globe Sports writers. Gordon Edes just makes my teeth grind, not to mention CHB.

laura k said...

I'm not trying to be a know-it-all.

It just comes naturally?

/duck!

their record doesn't change the way you feel while watching this (or another) game.

That's the point, I think.

allan said...

Wake at Trop: 8-0, 2.33, 3 saves (18 games, 12 starts)

So -- 9-0 on Tuesday AM!

laura k said...

s1c, I recommend my approach. I never read them.

Seriously, you can watch every game, never read a word of that crap (stick to blogs) and be much happier.

allan said...

Edes seems fine, but all I have to go on is print.

Why everyone likes Bob Ryan so much, I don't know. Some good columns, some real shits.

Perception - Yankees always seem to win from behind.

Reality - they suck

WHY THE PERCEPTION - because usually they come back against some team that the Sox just lost close games against. Facts to support this - none. I am just going with my gut!

Stat-head fan - "There is such thing as an over-reliance on facts."

laura k said...

Comments like this leave me wanting to read some of Jack Marshall's poetry.....

LOL

The man can turn a phrase. (Jack, are you lurking?)

nixon33 said...

not to nit-pick, but comebacks arent always in late innings. ive seen a lot of games where opposing teams scorea ton of runs in the fourth, and the yanks comeback and take the lead, whether they end up winning or not, sometimes yes, sometimes no. comebacks dont always mean wins i.e. last night. thats all i meant, i'll write that next time to make myself 1000% clear.

laura k said...

"Stat-head fan - "There is such thing as an over-reliance on facts." "

That is stat-head fan quoting a troll!!

laura k said...

Jack Marshall banned himself, you know. Because of our politics!

laura k said...

I have to agree with Nixon33 on that last one. How many times do we look at a Yankees score during a game, they are behind, then the next time we look, boom, they are ahead? (Please don't go look it up.) I would say it's A LOT of times.

That doesn't mean they always win those games and it doesn't mean the Sox don't do it too. But just b/c NYY is behind at some point means nothing. I share the same perception.

nixon33 said...

Comments like this leave me wanting to read some of Jack Marshall's poetry.....

s1c said...

What I hate is the Globe writers being on the pre-game show. It is always the same Edes, Carfado, CHB and Benjamin (who I like actually). It is always the Globe people and what really grinds my teeth is they fail to mention how the freaking Globe own 17 % of the Sox and NESN.

We never see or hear any of the other beat writers from the other papers. I would like to here Buckley, Massorati or Bradford once in a while.

laura k said...

And PS it's part of what makes NYY fans so arrogant, the ingrained belief that they will always come back. Despite 2004. It runs very deep.

allan said...

Bradford is great. But it's a NESN-Globe exclusive. Thanks goodness for new blood like Snow and Benjamin.

I just hate the NESN-Globe Exclusive, especially since it is due to their part ownership of the team etc. Factor in the fact the globe is owned by the NY Times and you soon realize why it always comes back to the Yankees.

Ex. - Even when the Yankees were in last place this year, the NESN pre game had some type of Yankee update.

Although H. pylori is not generally thought of as invasive, it has been observed in the lamina propria and within vacuoles in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells. The authors report that isolates of H. pylori can enter into the cytoplasm of tissue culture epithelial cell lines such as HEp-2 cells. Intracellular uptake of H. pylori by HEp-2 cells is rapid and appears to require both the N-acetylneuraminyllactose-binding adhesion and another factor present only in living bacteria.

I couldn't say. We had a real change of life when we moved here - we're staid suburban folk now.

Toronto is a nice city, seems to have a lot going on. There are lots of resources online you could check out though.

Montreal is a fabulous city, but it's very hard to live there and be well employed if you aren't bilingual. People do - but it would be hard. Also much harder to emigrate, you have to apply directly to Quebec, and they really want you to parlez francais.

Better to apply federally (to all of Canada), move to Toronto, then move to Montreal later if you want to.

It takes about 1.5 - 2 yrs to get through the emigration process.

We should take this outta JoS.

nixon33 said...

FUCK YEAH!

There was one Manny moonshot HR where every single person behind the plate leapt to their feet, hands going crazy, but one woman in the first or second row stayed in her seat and just nodded her head once, maybe twice.

It was great.

bennymac said...

speaking of people behind the plate...who is the dude directly behind home? slightly to the right of a right handed batter, next to the aisle. he is at every home game. every home game. he's got some kind of streak going.

allan said...

Jere knows all those guys, has nicknames for them and everything. Where is he tonight?
