G127: Tampa Bay 2, Red Sox 1

Red Sox LOBotomy:
122 121 212 = 14
It took Boston four batters to get their run in the fourth: Pedroia HBP, Youkilis double, Ortiz BB, Lowell L7 sac fly. After scoring the run, Pedroia left the game with an injured left elbow.

Dice had a one-hitter going with one out in the sixth when Upton cranked a two-run shot to right. So the Red Sox had three innings against the Rays bullpen to get one run.

7th: Youkilis K, Ortiz line single to RF, Lowell P4, Drew line single to LF, Varitek K.

8th: Crisp P6, Kielty L3, Lugo double RF corner, Cora K.

9th: Youkilis PF5 (1st pitch), Ortiz BB, Lowell L9 (replay showed Young trapped it, no argument from anyone), Drew ground single to center, Varitek F7.

Francona will never pinch-hit for Varitek, but I would have loved to see Manny hitting there. Varitek was useless tonight (0-for-5): foul pop to catcher, groundout first to pitcher, strikeout swinging, strikeout swinging, fly out to left.

Evan Brunell wrote today about The Fall of Jason Varitek.

***

Daisuke Matsuzaka (3.79, 119 ERA+) / Edwin Jackson (5.69, 80 ERA+)

Manny off tonight.
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
Kevin Youkilis, 1B
David Oritz, DH
Mike Lowell, 3B
J.D. Drew, RF
Jason Varitek, C
Coco Crisp, CF
Eric Hinske, LF
Julio Lugo, SS

Meanwhile, Yankee bloggers are telling fans: "Take a deep breath, it's no time to panic."

However, the Yankee room is running out of oxygen.

man what is with the google accounts thing that i have to create a new account everytime i post?????
anyway...im back from beantown.

laura k said...

I won't see you all in the game thread tonight, unless the game goes late. Have fun and go Sox!

allan said...

Do you mean you have to keep logging in (having to get a new account would mean picking a new name)?

If it's logging in, so do I. I do it about 10 times a day -- both with blogger and gmail email.

Example: Log in, work on a blog post, then go to upload a picture and actually have to log in again!

Annoying. And Laura never has to do this. Grrrrr....

nixon33 said...

ni i have to keep signing up.. was doing it with my yahoo and never got a confirmation...just did it with hotmail and it varified my account...weird.

Has anyone here sat in the Monster Seats yet, and is worth some of the prices people charge?

allan said...

Looks like face value is $140.

First year was 50, then it jumped to 100. I'd still love to do it once.

Joe Grav said...

Hinske instead of Kielty?

nick said...

no experience in the monster seats myself. spoke w/ a friend of mine at the beginning of the year who did it once last year. He felt it was overrated. Wasn't a huge fan of the view-particularly for the price, plus noted it was quite windy up there. Having said that, he's glad he did it, but doesn't plan to do it again.

CaKeY said...

The thing I liked most about the Monster seats is the view of the Red Sox dugout. You can see directly into it. Its pretty neat.

nixon33 said...

where is the game thread tonight?

allan said...

i am here

allan said...

FSN morons tonight

i was on the phone with rogers cable trying to get them to change the feed to nesn.

it didn't work.

but i did register a complaint and got an email address to formally complain.

more red sox fans in canada should = more nesn feeds. (that goes for throughout the states too)

allan said...

why i thought they might change it:

on a recent game, they started with the other team's feed, then it suddenly switched to the mfy game (arrggg), i called and when the sox game was restored, it was nesn.

nixon33 said...

i hate it when they arent on nesn

allan said...

i'm going to make this a little project for next year.

at mlb, you have a choice of radio feeds -- why not tv on mlb ei? (there should be enough channels to fit them in, right?)

nixon33 said...

oh no ococ has the "Coco Crystal" harido tonight

allan said...

crystal?

Joe Grav said...

next time JD bats at fenway: "uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuselesss"

allan said...

drew's a little too choosy with pitches to swing at.

coco: 1-1.

Joe Grav said...

OK, you can yell "Choooooooosy" --- the effect will be the same :)

allan said...

LET'S GO LUGO!

nixon33 said...

yeah cause of cocos high harline i saw something in the weekly dig in boston that they said something about seperated at birth billy crystal and coco

allan said...

billy crystal is so fucking annoying.

best thing i saw him in, though, was game 7 of the 2004 alcs. every so often, they showed him and it looked like he was going to cry.

nixon33 said...

the best thing ive ever seen in regards to hopw much we hate the yankees and billy crystal is in the series they played in 2005 (was it vs the white sox or angels?) anyway on of the opposing teams fans had a huge sign that read:BILLY CRYSTAL SUCKS!
fucking awesome.

Zenslinger said...

Wow, Texas has scored 20 runs against Baltimore. 5, 9, and 6 run innings.

nick said...

texas scored 6 in the 8th with no outs. just got their 1st out of the inning w/ 1 on.

allan said...

damn - dusty hit on left elbow. trainer out for a bit.

allan said...

still wincing after about 2 minutes -- staying in.

allan said...

rays tv guys thinking he might be faking pain to set up the rays -- and then he'll steal second.

good lord.

allan said...

he leads off first - left arm just dangling there.

i think he's coming out very soon.

Joe Grav said...

Yeehaw!

allan said...

yooooook - double off top of rf wall.

Zenslinger said...

Holy Christmas. A true football score for Texas over Baltimore: 24-3.

Salty has 7 RBI.

Joe Grav said...

Pedroia looked like he was very uncomfortable heading to 3rd

Joe Grav said...

Big spot for David.

Zenslinger said...

This is not good about Pedrera.

Must not have an injured RotY.

allan said...

tiz checks his swing, 3b ump calls ball, both rays tv guys groan about the call -- migraine says "must be a league directive about not taking the bat out of big papi's hands"

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Daniel said...

Big spot for Dr. Doubles.

Joe Grav said...

ouch. i initially thought line-into-double-play. i'll take it.

AH JD YOU ARE AWFUL

allan said...

drew? booooooooooooooo.

Zenslinger said...

Are they booing Drew even at Tropicana?

Daniel said...

Maybe J.D. should have been choosier on that one ..

allan said...

fsn: "maybe this is edwin's one bad inning"

the guy's ERA is 5.69. i think in most games he has more than one bad inning.

tek - you suck too.

Joe Grav said...

only getting one run there is pretty crappy.

nixon33 said...

WAY TO GO TEAM!
BASES LOADED / NO OUTS/ 1 RUN
ugh

Zenslinger said...

Theo: "We put more men on base, so we leave more men on base."

Grrrr.

Hope that doesn't haunt us.

Hope that the Angels win against Rivera tonight.

Peace to Dice-K. May he roll.

See you all later.

CaKeY said...

Pedroia out Cora in.

JFett said...

OK, say what you want about Don & Jerry and their annoying habits, but at least NESN doesn't give us a half inning biology lesson.

allan said...

how did yook miss that pickoff tag?

allan said...

jeff - i know it.

we get details about what a little green stuffed animal did during the day!

JFett said...

At least you can make a drinking game out of Wally news.

nick said...

from mlb.com:
Renteria was activated from the disabled list in time to start Wednesday night's game against the Reds at Great American Ball Park. But while shifting his weight during the first pitch he saw from Bronson Arroyo in the first inning, the veteran shortstop reacted in obvious pain.

Without even taking a swing, Renteria aggravated the high right ankle sprain that had sidelined him since Aug. 2. The Braves say that he'll be re-evaluated on Thursday.

After Renteria stumbled and attempted to keep his weight off his right leg, manager Bobby Cox and head athletic trainer Jeff Porter rushed on the field. It took them just a few moments to help the injured Renteria back to the bench.

CaKeY said...

Damn. That sucks.

allan said...

At least you can make a drinking game out of Wally news.

Do tell.

allan said...

Texas now beating Baltimore 26-3 -- and they have a Game 2 to play!!!

Ron said...

Hey, just got here, so this is a bit late. I sat on the Monster earlier this year in the blowout against the Braves (the Mike Lowell Grand Slam game on May 19).

I paid face value for the front row ($140). To guarantee access to the tickets, I coughed up even more money to get a Red Sox Nation "Monster" membership (so that's what that little plastic card is for). Otherwise you are in a lottery with just about no chance of getting tickets.

I doubt I'd do it again, but it was an amazing view. You are right on top of Coco and Manny, with a great view of the game from a nice angle. We were close to the light tower on the right (as viewed from home plate).

Here are my pictures.

Was it worth the price? I dunno, but I went with my seven year old son and he loved it. So I guess I'd have to say yes.

allan said...

On my Gameday, the 26 for Texas doesn't actually fit into the score spot, part of the 6 is cut off.

Hinske: SB and E2!!! Get him in, Lugo.

CaKeY said...

Remy: Maybe the haircut gives him more speed!

LOL

JFett said...

Wally Drinking Game

Each person take a different scenario and whenever Remy mentions that situation, you drink. Examples:

1. Wally interactinvg with some other mascot, drink
2. Wally with travel trouble, drink
3. Wally on a 4-wheeler running over a player coming out of the dugout, oh wait, that was someone else...

allan said...

You're on, Einstein.

Ron said...

Coco's "SLOW" sign in front of the dugout the other night was pretty funny.

JFett said...

Damn, nice catch from Crawford

Ron said...

Rangers now up by an Order of Magnitude.

JFett said...

Texas now has 30!

JFett said...

A little gift for Trembley getting a 1 year contract for next season.

allan said...

holy fuck

30 runs for texas.

Tex 000 509 0(10)6
Bal 102 000 00

allan said...

the rangers will, of course, get shutout on like 2 hits in the nightcap.

allan said...

kielty in for hinske, per gameday

allan said...

FSN says an Rangers pitcher threw the last 3 innings in the 30-3 win -- so he gets a SAVE!!!

Joe Grav said...

Why? I hope Hinske isn't hurt.

and HA at that guy getting a save...that is amazing

allan said...

wes littleton gets the save and gabbard gets the win.

apparently it is a modern record for runs scored. no team has scored 30 in a game since a year that started with 18xx.

Joe Grav said...

Wow.

Cmon dice

JFett said...

I'm impressed with 30 runs, but I'm more impressed that all the runs were scored in only 4 different innings.

Sir Jahmez said...

I think Tropicana Field should be renamed Fenway South.

I bet they don't send him if Manny's coming up.....

nixon33 said...

We just raise them well and sent them out in to the world.....

allan said...

gameday says hinske left with injured leg.

i don't think fsn has even mentioned he's out (it's been 1.5 innings).

any news from nesn?

Ofer said...

Can someone explain how that qualifies as a save? As far as I can tell, he entered the game up by 10 runs... hardly a save situation...

s1c said...

Pitching the last three innings of while your team is winning counts as a save. The run differential only comes into effect if you pitch less than three.

Ofer said...

Hmmm. Thanks for clarifying that. I guess the fact that I never saw that situation arise says something about modern bullpen usage.

allan said...

AP:

The Texas Rangers became the first team in 110 years to score 30 runs in a game.

It was the ninth time a major league team scored 30 runs, the first since Chicago set the major league record in a 36-7 rout of Louisville in a National League game on June 28, 1897, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Texas also set a team record for runs scored in a doubleheader -- before the second game even started.

Joe Grav said...

you are #@$@!#@! me

allan said...

3 innings vs the Rays pen = runs (and a win).

Rob said...

I'm still glad that Dice-K is throwing more fastballs tonight. Once again the offense is not capitalizing on their opportunities yet. Yet. Any guesses on when the Red Sox will take the lead again? I'm betting... the 8th inning.

allan said...

we need you now, papi.

allan said...

Dr., if you please?

allan said...

Dammit, I believe in Drew. Here we go, JD!

Daniel said...

What's with all the broken bats? Is there someone I can blame for that?

allan said...

Tek tonight: P2, 3-1, K.

Can we PH Cash for him?

Joe Grav said...

n/m, Tek is up, not Drew (that's what I get for not paying attention for a minute).

errrr well it turns out the inning is over. GAH

Daniel said...

When Tek was up in the 5th he was swinging at everything. In the 7th he was called out on strikes. Some days you can't win ...

i do not appreciate what mr. timlin is doing here.

Joe Grav said...

HUGE

s1c said...

See, without the HBP the score a run!

Ron said...

nice play youk

allan said...

Dice - 111 pitches.

nixon33 said...

is it coincidence or is it real: ever since the boris comments about how hes not happy with how many pitches dice-k had been throwing, they've been pulling him a bit earlier?
maybe im out of my mind.

nixon33 said...

HUGE BALLS OF TIMLIN!

Daniel said...

It's a scoreless inning, I'll take it

Spencer Brown said...

Timlin == God

allan said...

nixon33 - check his pitch counts and see.

Joe Grav said...

who is coming in to pitch for the Devil Dawgs?

Rob said...

Sometimes it's just as nice to see a pitcher get into a jam then pitch his way out of it rather than just throw a scoreless inning. Not that you're every really wishing it upon them. 5 outs left. Gagné's loosening.

Rob said...

Texas has a 3-0 lead in the Bottom of the 3rd in game 2.

Of course, Baltimore had a 3-0 lead through 3 innings in game 1.

I'm gonna suggest we drink on that one.

Rob said...

The village is getting bigger.

Daniel said...

Castig: "Red Sox have speed at second if Cora can find a hole, bloop a hit."

If Lugo gets thrown out at the plate I blame Demarlo Hale for the loss.

Daniel said...

Never mind ..

Rob said...

Payton and Markakis just hit home runs in Baltimore... I thought about it earlier tonight about having a ticket to see both of those games; how absolutely boring I'm sure it would be. Now I'm wishing I was at Camden Yards tonight. 3-3 in the Bottom of the 3rd. Could they...?

allan said...

Manny for Drew?

Ofer said...

Come on guys, let's give gagne his second W as a redsox.

nixon33 said...

LETS GET SOME F-ING RUNS!

Rob said...

Progress for Gagné, I'd call it. Even with the two hard hit foul balls.

s1c said...

Two straight appearances with no runs for Gagne! But who will pitch the ninth for the Save?

Rob said...

I'm surprised Youk went after that first pitch.

allan said...

yook - pitch up and in and he fucking hacks - pop up foul to third.

idiot.

JFett said...

I remember when I thought Youk was great. Now he just pisses me off.

Daniel said...

What happened to the Youkilis we knew and loved? This joker swings at everything, argues balls and strikes ... get over yourself.

Rob said...

He trapped that ball! Surprised there was no argument. Wow. What a world.

allan said...

replay looked like a fuckjign TRAP

FSN: Rays caught a break there!

Joe Grav said...

WHY THE FUCK IS JD DREW BATTING IN ANY SITUATION

Daniel said...

Castig just pointed out, "If they do rule it a trap, Ortiz is forced."

JFett said...

Big time trap!

tunameltzer said...

Got robbed!

Joe Grav said...

IT'S A MIRACLE

MANNY FOR TEK PLEASE

allan said...

FSN doesnt say trap, but clearly they know it was not a catch

DREW!!!!!!!!!

TITO -- DO NOT LET TEK HIT

Rob said...

What's FSN saying now about 'Tek coming up to the plate?

tunameltzer said...

I take back .01% of my J.D. Drew hate.

nixon33 said...

WHERE THE F IS MANNY>?????

allan said...

FSN: "It's Varitek again, and we've talked about how dangerous he is."

Oy.

Spencer Brown said...

"WHY THE FUCK IS JD DREW BATTING IN ANY SITUATION"

you were saying???

I'm not the sharpest stick, but why not have someone run for Papi? In case of extra innings?

Thanks Varibelli.

14 LOB.

Classic 2007 Red Sox loss.

again, great job team....

Unknown said...

Thanks Varibelli.

I agree, I want to break shit too.

s1c said...

Red Sox 7 and 3 vs Rays

All three losses goes to Daisuke.

14 lob 1.5 an inning.

At least they won the series. Go Angels!!!!

Rob said...

Seattle also lost.

John Sterling: "This game has become much bigger for the Yankees because the Red Sox [and Mariners] just lost."

Daniel said...

Seems like Dice never gets any run support

Is it true that some pitchers consistently get run support while others don't? Does it hold from one season to the next?

Just curious.

Rob said...

The run support statistics are so strange, because there really is no rhyme or reason to it. Unless one pitcher has a personal catcher who can't hit (Wakefield/Mirabelli), but that rarely comes up. It's so strange.

thatdietcokegirl said...

francona should have come out to argue that ""catch"" in the 9th. plz. wtf. i think they would have reversed it cause it was obvious the dude himself didn't even think he caught it considering he threw to second to get the force out. LAME.

Daniel said...

Angels announcer just said the Sox-Rays game was a pitchers' duel.

Rob said...

The catch looked legitimate to me in real-time... I was very surprised when the replay showed the trap. Maybe they were just as fooled. Well, that's a stretch.

Ron said...

re: Run support.

Thing is, he did get the force at second, so it would have just been Lowell at 1st instead of Ortiz - and Ortiz's speed didn't become an issue ..

Francona will never pinch-hit for Varitek, but I would have loved to see Manny hitting there. Varitek was useless tonight (0-for-5): foul pop to catcher, groundout first to pitcher, strikeout swinging, strikeout swinging, fly out to left.
