G131: Red Sox 11, White Sox 1

Sexy Lips allowed only two hits over six innings for the second start in a row.

Commenter mikelove says it's the first time (since 1957, maybe earlier) a team has swept a four-game series while scoring 10+ runs in each game. Boston outscored the White Sox 46-7.

The Red Sox lead the Yankees in the East by 7.5 games. New York finishes up against the Tigers tomorrow night, then heads home for Tuesday's showdown.

***

Julian Tavarez (5.01, 90 ERA+) / Javier Vazquez (3.66, 125 ERA+)

Hi, Javy! It's been a while since 2004, but we remember. And we thank you.

In 23 career AB againat Vazquez, J.D. Drew has hit .391/.440/.870.

Interesting 'toid that means next-to-nothing:
Vazquez is trying to become the only pitcher in the Major Leagues to record at least 10 wins, 30 starts and 150 strikeouts for the seventh straight season. He needs five more starts and three more strikeouts to extend the streak.

Probably the ONE and ONLY day we'd like to have Johnny Damon back. Grand Dong please? Jump on him early and I think Julian will do okay.

tim said...

That truly is a useless factoid.

In other news, Dustin Pedroia is about to become the first player to have 94 consecutive games without tying his shoe on the field during the game.

He is currently tied with Roberto Alomar who went 93 games in 1995 before his laces came undone in a September 5th contest vs. Detroit at the Skydome during the fourth inning.

Vasquez has pitched pretty well against the Sox over the last few seasons. I'm more worried about that than 2004.

Ron said...

I love inane stats. Sometimes they can be high comedy. Forgive me for bringing up another sport, but one of my favorites dates from Michael Jordan's unfortunate final comeback with the Washington Wizards.

Jordan scored over 50 points in a game, then had a big night the following evening, making it his "5th best 50 point follow-up" or some nonsense. We were just cracking up.

Maybe it was just me.

You're worried? There's little to worry about. Relax and enjoy.

In other news, I used to like Javy Vasquez. C'est la guerre.

laura k said...

Chief, it was not just you. We call that "slice it thin, but not too thin". It comes from Allan's days behind a deli counter.

BTW Chief, re a comment I made yesterday, the name Ronald is a perfectly fine name. Unless you are this guy, I was not talking about you. (I think he's being hauled off by the fashion police.)

allan said...

The link on each pitcher's name goes to his team's MLB.com preview. Does anyone ever click those?

allan said...

Chokers start at 1 PM (Hughes/Jurrjens).

allan said...

I'm thinking I should start linking to these.

allan said...

Vazquez did not face the Red Sox in 2005.

In 2006, he pitched in 2 games: 9.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 5 BB, 13 K

In 2007, one game: 6.1 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K

Last 3 seasons:

16 IP, 13 H, 3 R, 7 BB, 18 K

A 1.69 ERA, but at least 20 baserunners in those 16 innings. Good amount of Ks though.

allan said...

Plus there are at least four players who were not with the Sox last year who he might see today: Lugo, Pedroia, Kielty, and Drew, so "against Boston" means very little.

Win.

Rob said...

And then there are also the MLB Game Notes...
Boston
Chicago

allan said...

Are those available to everyone? I don't think they used to be.

Rob said...

It appears they are. It says for subscribing to MLB Press Pass, but this season I've always been able to get them.

Rob said...

Did A-Rod just K right there? I couldn't see because my feed... nevermind. They just got back from break. He did K.

Rob said...

He's Grrrrrranderson! Lead-off inside-the-park home run to left! Got past Matsui and stopped in the corner and Matsui had to stop and turn and go chase it, and Granderson made a quick lap.

allan said...

Shemp's always good for a laugh in the outfield.

Rob said...

CONVENTIONAL DONG! Oh it's gonna be a gooood day. 3-0 Tigers

Jere said...

Nice start, Detroit! Somebody's Huggies are Phull.

Rob said...

Giambi's playing first base today. So there's essentially a hole on the right side.

Rob said...

That's not good. Dong to Giambi and here comes the trainer.

Oi. I may have spoke too soon about it being a good day. Though it still can be.

Jere said...

What happened to Jair?

Rob said...

Looks like his shoulder... There wasn't anything obvious, but he could have actually popped it out even. It sort of looked that way...

At least they've got a former rotation guy doing long relief.

Jere said...

Nice job, Kentucky Durbin. Now pile on, O!

nick said...

I repeat myself when I'm distressed.
I repeat myself when I'm distressed.

stopped by to say hi. back to work.

Rob said...

Posterior right shoulder soreness. So... his shoulder hurts.

Jere said...

Nice inning by Durbin.

Rob said...

Keep those good innings comin'.

Jere said...

HR!!!!!!!

allan said...

Comments will be approved as quickly as I can. Thanks.

Jere said...

Here we go, Javy vs. Tavy.

Ron said...

5-1 Tigers. Woohoo!

L-girl - I was just kidding about the corporate poison comment. I share a name with a certain awful president too, but I don't lose sleep over it.

Rob said...

"That's not smart pitching by Phil Hughes." Who's the color man for the Detroit telecast? I like this guy. He tells ya what's coming.

5-1.

Jere said...

you should be gipper instead of chief, ha. or dutch.

That reminds me--there are certain pictures of Kielty where he really does look like Ronny McD...

allan said...

Wondering about comment approval? Email me!

laura k said...

Chief, that's wise. We can't all be named after a classic movie like I am.

Allan: take off this stupid moderation. We promise not to feed the trolls.

Jere said...

L--"she" posted a thousand times in a row......

laura k said...

Jere, I'm well aware, Allan and I have been emailing about it all day. I don't think this is a viable solution. I have other ideas.

Rob said...

I'd say it's a good move to give Manny two days off in a row. Yankees got something going against Durbin. Men at 1st and 2nd, 1 out. Giambi up.

Jere said...

"I'd say it's a good move to give Manny two days off in a row."

I'll let this day off go because they are saying "back problem."

Julian needs a 1-2-3. ish.

(like L, I say "ish" a lot, too, so Ish, I'll let you know if I'm specifically referring to you with my ishes.)

Rob said...

They got Giambi swinging on a hard cutter.

Jere said...

oh you are f'n kidding me. 5-4.

Rob said...

Ah, BALLS. Cano just knocked one out to center... 3 run shot.

allan said...

Laura is our new moderator.

Commnets should be approved quite quickly.

Rob said...

One of my friends liked the name Ish (She told me there was a guy named Ish on "Pimp My Ride" so she told me I'm Ish now.

You guys can also call me Rob if you like better. Well the Tigers are still on top but this has the feeling of being a slug-fest today in Autoland.

Jere said...

Don't let Huggies off the hook, Tigers...

Nice 1-2 start by Julian.

Jere said...

Tigers will have to do it with I-Rod. Terrible. What, did he argue balls and strikes?

Rob said...

Home plate umpire Sam Holbrook ejected Ivan Rodriguez for a pretty heated argument between innings, presumably about his calling of balls and strikes.

Rob said...

That's certainly someone you never want to see get ejected--your starting catcher. You'd think he would have known that by now, but of course feelings get the best of people sometimes.

Jere said...

NESN is really going crazy over this upcoming Yankee series. The scroll at bottom just called it a "huge series."

Granted, I fully admit that to me, the Yankees series are unlike any other, even if the teams are separated by 25 games. But leave the "hype machine" stuff to Fox.

Rob said...

The only mention of the series with the Yankess on the radio was on the keys to the game (brought to you by Glenn Geffner...): Pay attention to today's game and don't worry about the Yankees.

Go go go go go go GONE!!!

Jere said...

oh yeah! He was Drue.

Daniel said...

There's a dong ...

Mike L said...

Yeah JD! Nothin' like a little competition at your position to get the bat goin'.

Jere said...

Everybody's goin' for the dong today it seems.

Rob said...

Must be some strange breeze, the way the outfielders are moving. And the balls.

Rob said...

Durbin's done. Men on 1st and 2nd, 1 out... (In comes Bobby Seay)

Name That Molina and Sour Melk both singled. Here comes Abreu.

Jere said...

Seay you, say me gets Abreu, bray me.

allan said...

Hi all, L-girl here. Keep the comments coming as usual, I should be able to keep up. :)

allan said...

With L's help, I think comments can flow as freely and as quickly as before. So keep up the chatter.

Plus I'm told we scored a run!

allan said...

Heh. Two posts from different people under the same name saying the same thing.

allan said...

Ah-ha, but will you be able to distinguish between the real Redsock and his female impersonator?

Rob said...

Looks like a slug-fest here too. Dead-Dong.

Rob said...

Bobby Seay got Abreu (8-Fly) and A-Rod (6-3) and got out of the jam.

Jere said...

way to get out of it, Julian. I like that he settled down to get the next two. And good job by Seay last inning getting out of that deal.

Jere said...

Does anyone else clap along with that kid on the bus in that underarmour commercial?

Jere said...

Everyone swinging for fences indeed. Hey, why not....

trollzapper said...

Hi again. Now you can tell us apart. :)

Jere said...

shit, nice play by incorrectly spelled Jere.

Jere said...

Gameday again shows a ball practically over the wall called a fly out. Did Matsui rob it?

Rob said...

Impressive catch. I'm starting to like this Owens kid. Reminds me a little of Jose Reyes. (Not just because of his number)

Rob said...

Matsui got it on the warning track, about 1-2 feet in front of the wall.

allan said...

Not that there was any doubt, but L notes that "Barb"'s recent (rejected) comments clearly ID "her" as a man.

Jere said...

Nice inning by Seay! Insurance, now, Detroit!

trollzapper said...

Jeff from PA, if I deleted you by mistake, forgive me, and please try again.

Jere said...

Thanks, ish the commenter.

Gameday had the ball almost completely beyond the wall.

Nice DP, Sox!

Rob said...

Verlander against Mussina tomorrow night at 7 on ESPN2. Not a bad way to spend a Red Sox off-night.

6+4+3=DP yarr.

Ron said...

Off to buy school close for the kids. I'll be with you on the radio...

Mike L said...

Great D by the sox infield to end that inning. Little things that win games...

allan said...

L-girl says "No baseball - NO TV - on Red Sox off nights!"

signed,

L-girl the trollzapper

Ron said...

err, make the "clothes."

Jere said...

" Off to buy school close for the kids."

They need to look good for spelling class! I KID, Ronald!!!!

Jere said...

guess I was a little late on that one....

trollzapper said...

It was funnier that way.

Jere said...

Uhhh, Rabelo swung at a pitch that, on Gameday, was literally over his head.

allan said...

Uhhh, Rabelo swung at a pitch that, on Gameday, was literally over his head.

How Varitekian.

Rob said...

Red Sox off-nights... I try not to be home but if I am and I'm here... at the computer... and there's another baseball game on... well, you get the picture.

Jere said...

If only there was some way for Manny to just bat and not play the field..........

Jere said...

meaning today. with the rest. was a joke. not supposed to imply i wish he was always the DH.

Rob said...

These Detroit commentators say "tardy" way too much. Sounds like I'm still in school.

Jere said...

but then you'd lose Lowell or Youk with Papi at first. Just forget it.

Mike L said...

Can we agree that with JD at the plate a 5 pitch at-bat is officialy "long"?

Jere said...

Wow, that guy behind the plate has a green White Sox collared shirt on.

Jere said...

Tigers six outs away. Still, get some insurance!

That was the Burger King "Youkilis upset with the call" of the game.

Rob said...

Bobby Seay goes 6 up, 6 down... and now Zumaya's heating things up. 2 up, 2 down for Zumaya and they stretch in Detroit.

Jere said...

very nice K, Julian

Rob said...

WOW. Three VERY nice pitches from Tavarez.

Jere said...

Tavarez ain't missin' by much when he, you know, misses.

Jere said...

Casey with a "long" AB vs. Farnsworth

Rob said...

Heh... Don Orisillo's sunglasses.

Jere said...

That was the Pabst Blue Ribbon double-hit of the game.

Rob said...

Note to Tavarez: Don't throw that pitch again.

Orsillo*

Jere said...

That was the Curves for Women body language of the game.

allan said...

That was the Curves for Women body language of the game.

I'm approving these, L may not (see wmtc)!

Rob said...

1-2-3 for Farnsworth. He was nasty.

Jere said...

That's what got me thinkin' about all this avertisin'....

Jere said...

I'm still waiting for the Brunswick Billiards Cue Shot of the Game.

allan said...

The Wall was once covered in commercials and I'd be beyond pissed if it was again -- yet it looks nice in old photos.

Rob said...

OH SNAP! GemWeb for oCoC!

Jere said...

great catch coco!!! Too bad NESN almost cut him off the bottom of the screen on the play....

That was the Swiss Miss Coco catch of the game.

trollzapper said...

The zapper has returned.

Rob said...

Yankees Radio Network is absolutely full of advertising.

Speaking of nice plays... Inge barehanded a little ducksnort shot to third from Melky Cabrera and gunned it to first JUST getting Sour Melk (who slid head-first into first base)

Jere said...

I do like how, with the current ads on the Monster, they blended them in, just white stencil on wall. I mean, if they must have them, at least they know we're paying attention to such things.

trollzapper said...

Jere, I've been wondering when each pitch will be sponsored.

Jere said...

Plus there are the Coke bottles and the two ad signs above the Monster. So actually, it does have a lot of ads...

Jere said...

Stupid play by Javy!!!

Rob said...

I'm becoming a huge Kielty fan.

allan said...

The gyroball would be a natural.

...

Hi Babs! MFY still losing 5-4!

Jere said...

The Yankee broadcast booth ITSELF is sponsored. Seriously.

allan said...

The Coke bottles are a travesty.

Jere said...

Tigers 3 outs away!

Rob said...

On Yankees Radio for each pitching change they have ads on each side of the break.

"This call to the bullpen is brought to you by..."
- break -
"That call to the bullpen was brought to you by..."

Jere said...

Just recently, the Red Sox radio network became the Shaw's Red Sox radio network....

trollzapper said...

when it comes to ads, there's no difference, all the teams suck.

only fenway and wrigley are quiet at the park, which helps a lot.

Rob said...

Zumaya's putting on a SHOW out there!

trollzapper said...

On Yankees Radio for each pitching change they have ads on each side of the break.

NESN does the same thing.

Rob said...

1-2-3 Zumaya 8th... ends by a NASTY strikeout to A-Rod! Woo hoo! Man. Zumaya was practically dancing off the field.

trollzapper said...

Allan, please don't talk to "her" through comments!

Jere said...

way to beat it out, screwball

Jere said...

How about Thames hits another dong to make the 9th a little easier. Do we know if Jeter is available to pinch hit?

Jere said...

Pedroia's thinkin dong here. But we'll take a single

trollzapper said...

I like that "thinking dong".

A thinking dong's dong.

Rob said...

I don't know if he is, but I think they trust Better Meat.

Jere said...

SASUNHPE or whatever

Rob said...

They've got Polanco up, Thames on deck with 1 away.

trollzapper said...

I think we have the new game thread system down.

Allan will be able to score - I'll be able to watch the game and post - and trolls will not be able to post.

As long as everyone can wait a few secs to see their posts, we're good.

Teamwork, baby!

Jere said...

i love it!!! 3-1 us!

Rob said...

Yeah Dusty!!!!

Jere said...

Long AB for Thames. Headed toward redsock long.

Jere said...

two-run quarter-dong for Dusty.

Rob said...

PAPI!!!!!

Rob said...

Now THAT is 4 quick runs!

trollzapper said...

PAPI!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jere said...

Large Papi. We're comin', Bronx!!

trollzapper said...

I say this every day: playing the White Sox is fun!

Jere said...

Tim's walks. Thames missin' this. Or vise versa.

Rob said...

And now Todd Jones comes in to get the final 3 outs and put those Yankees away. I really do feel bad for Ozzie Guillen.

Jere said...

big lead, Tav, throw strikes

Jere said...

got the yanks on mlbtv for the ninth. Sweet, no Yes.

Rob said...

Ortiz's last four home runs have come on the first pitch.

Matsui, Giambi, and Cano in the 9th.

Jere said...

key K for Julian to start the frame.

Rob said...

1 out. Matsui 3-1.

trollzapper said...

Ortiz's last four home runs have come on the first pitch.

hmmmm :)

Jere said...

Heck of a KEY play by Jones to get Matsui at first!! one out

Rob said...

Giambi bloops to left-center... Duncan pinch-runs for him.

Jere said...

bloop-ish hit for Giambi

Joe Grav said...

Come on Tigers :)

Jere said...

we hold on and it's 7 or 8.

trollzapper said...

how can it be 6? we can't go backwards.

trollzapper said...

ok, gotcha

Jere said...

Yanks closer to third than first.

trollzapper said...

oops! perhaps you saw the level of intellect we're dealing with here!

Jere said...

If we lose today, and Yanks win tomorrow, it's 6. So we have to hold on today.

trollzapper said...

i'm doing too many things at once to check - what's the wild card standings right now?

Jere said...

ok

trollzapper said...
