G113: Angels 10, Red Sox 4

Another shitty game drops the East lead to 5 games -- which is still the largest first-place margin of any of the six divisions.

Panic? New York better panic -- they have only 49 games to play.

Our magic number is 45.

***

Tim Wakefield (4.55, 99 ERA+) / Joe Saunders (3.10, 138 ERA+)

RedSox.com:
Saunders continued his high-caliber work in dispatching the A's across 6.2 innings, holding them to two earned runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two. A strike-thrower who keeps his defense involved, Saunders also keeps his team in games. The Angels are 7-0 in his starts since he opened the season with a 4-3 loss to Oakland. He has faced Boston once for a no-decision, going 5.2 innings on August 22, 2006, giving up two unearned runs in a game won by the Angels in Anaheim.
The Yankees (Fat Billy) play in Toronto (Josh Towers) tonight.

The MFY trail the Red Sox by 6 games in the East and are only .5 GB Detroit in the wild card hunt (Seattle is 1 GB).

Lot of people on WEEI killing Francona today. Various complaints. Why Tavarez instead of Gagne? Why Moss instead of Wily Mo in the ninth or Cora? How come he doesn't play small or get these guys to relax when RISP?

The team has the best record in baseball and just because they lose while the MFY's win, the people in Boston seem to panic!

Get a grip people!

Wily Mo passed through waivers, look for a trade within the next week.

Hmmm...just looked at this thread, it's Toonie Tuesday over at Kentucky Fried Chicken today...

Colonel Saunders is calling my name.

Then again, I'm not exactly into having the grease pumped out of my body and missing the game.

Not the people. The idiots.

I can see Tito now, yelling at Drew while he's batting: "RELAX!!!"

This is Exhibit A of why never to listen to these dolts. All of a sudden, they love WMP. ???

I want to keep an eye on the Yankee game, but watching Josh Towers pitch to a hot Yankee lineup on Buffyvision is not for the faint-hearted. I think I'll prep by watching one of the Texas Chainsaw or Saw epics.

Yeah, it doesn't really matter where you are physically...in fact, I have two dish network satellites hooked up ...not going to get into the details of those.

They were trying to make stealing american satellites illegal in canada - which is how we started with directv. But directv phased out the "hacked" cards, and no one has cracked the new cards, so we just decided to get a legit account with my mom's address.

Slappy acting tough tonight. From mlb:

"Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez was hit in the back of his left leg by a fastball from Jays starter Josh Towers in the top of the third inning. Rodriguez took exception to the pitch and started walking towards the mound, which prompted both benches to clear. Eventually, things settled down and Rodriguez took his place at first base. Before play could be resumed, though, Towers and Rodriguez walked towards each other one more time, and again, both benches cleared."

Here's the deal: Look at NESN.com, their FAQ. It's like the first answer. Their territory, as determined by mlb is, and I quote, "all of New England except Fairfield County, Connecticut." (where I lived the first 29 years of my life.)

So, in that county, you're just not getting NESN. In other CT counties, they are in the NESN territory, but not all CT cable companies choose to carry NESN. So those people get the dutch-door action screwjob. They're IN NESN territory, so they're blacked out of ESPN games (as ESPN THINKS, we guess, they must be getting the game.) And they're blacked out by anything else--EI or whatever. So, essentially they can never see the Red Sox.

The thing is, at least they have a chance--if their cable company wises up--like, you can start a petition knowing it might get results. Fairfield, though, is officially out of the territory, so the cable companies will tell you "there's nothing we can do."

And then Remy has the nerve to say "ohh, wow, we're getting people signing up for RemDawg Nation in CT! I thought that was Yankee country." Well, then, give us NESN you idiots!!! God this STILL makes me so mad. (And I live in Boston now!)

You got to remember though that Fairfield county is mostly New Yorkers living in CT. Waterbury is not in Fairfield though, so it is up to the cable company.

One of the reasons why I think you should be able to pick what channels you want and basically just pay for those channels.

I would be able to get rid about half of my channels that way.

Oh, I remember. Like I said, 29 years there. Is it my fault that people who work in New York choose to live IN NEW ENGLAND, HOME OF THE RED SOX? Don't call it New England Sports Network if you're not gonna give it to New Englanders. I'm not asking they add NYC to their region, even though there are LOTS of Sox fans there, but at least give it to New England, or re-name the network.

this is highly frustrating. now, we can worry.

Not yet. I'm not worrying til if/when it gets to 4 games.

But highly annoying, yes.

I hope A-Rod catches Asterisk.... only if he signs with someone else next year.

I can remember Aaron's 715th. I was 14. I can also remember 1978, this year smells alot like it.

I'll worry when the Yanks beat a team with a winning record.

Joe Grav said...

5 games is close enough for me. Especially since it was, what, 14? This sucks.

Sarah Haendler said...

"Did you think they were only going to stop half of the game??????"

Haha - that would have been interesting to see. Which half do you think they would stop?

Nationals: Um... excuse me? We're playing a game here?

Giants: Huh? Sorry, what?

no outs down 3 ..no way they can send him there...

I only vaguely remember '78, but I know this smells nothing like it.

I'll always remember that when Barry hit 756, I was on the phone whining with a friend about the Red Sox, and Hazel STD came on the TV to let me know that he broke the record

They are playing good 21-7 last 28

"they'll never catch the red sox...": blah blah 5 games after tonight...
this team cannot hit in key situations

laura k said...

Who said that about 1978??? I thought we had squelched that talk, at least at JoS.

Are you worried now because the BJ's had a winning record when this series started....

Jim said...

Sure, I remember Hank's. I was in a corner bar on my way home from work in Ottawa that was primarily a peeler joint. I was the only guy watching the little TV above the bartender.

Shit. One of these teams is playing good baseball and the other ...

Jere said...

We lost 14 of 17 and 9 of 10 on separate occasions in '78 to blow the lead. (Before OUR comeback to tie in the final week.) We're not doing anything like those losing stretches now.

I remember the two idiots come out on the field to run with Aaron, I remember the songs that some of the pitchers were singing about don't let it be me, and I vividly remember 1978 because the doofus across the hall in the dorm was a huge Yankee fan.

This doesn't feel like 1978 at all. Because there is no Spaceman on this team and no Gerbil.

I haven't seen the Sox look this bad all year long. Bad coaching, bad pitching in important situations, lousy execution... This is incredibly frustrating.

Also, I'm about to fly to anaheim to murder the Angels announcers.

laura k said...

Forget 14 games. (And I don't think it was ever 14 games this season.)

If you ever thought the Sox were going to win the division by more than 10 games, you were fooling yourself. That would not be at all realistic.

We don't have to win the division by 8 games, or 7 games, or 6 games.

We don't have to win the division by 5 games.

We just have to win the division. And we will.

The Yankees are on a roll, playing shitty teams. It will end. We will prevail.

But for fuck's sake don't start whining about 1978!!! Do you see Ron Guidry pitching for the Yankees? Do you see Reggie Jackson hitting? DO YOU SEE DON ZIIMMER MANAGING THE RED SOX????

Unless you see all three of those things, please shut the fuck up about 1978.

mattymatty said...

Under the heading "lousy coaching" can someone tell me why Tavarez is in there AGAIN tonight? We have three excellent relievers and none of them have gotten into either game yet, but Tavarez has pitched twice! Can anyone explain this to me?

9casey said...

Yeah!!!!!!

Jere said...

We did lead the Yanks by 14. But I agree. The only thing '78ish about this season is possibly these last two innings.....

laura k said...

Hey Woti, I knew you'd have an Aaron memory for me. :)

Heybluu said...

No, not gooch, Sox fan from CT, but I am not impressed with the way these guys are hitting or fielding the ball right now. Looks like a team feeling the pressure to me.

allan said...

bluu is not a red sox fan. i think that's obvious.

don't feed the trolls.

mattymatty said...

Well F! theres no reason not to leave Tavarez out there the rest of the way. This game is over.

To listen to the Angels announcers, you'd think that Coco literally booting the ball in the outfield is because of the scrappy-ness of the Angels.

Joe Grav said...

Tavarez is crap. He should be DFAd.

Sarah Haendler said...

matttymatty, I'll meet you there. Hook up with me under the big A, we can sneak in and strangle them with their own headsets.

laura k said...

No one's "impressed". Everyone is annoyed and frustrated. But there's no need to become a walking stereotype of what Yankees fans think you are.

tim said...

Also, I'm about to fly to anaheim to murder the Angels announcers.

The one of them sounds like he's trying to be a rock star or something.

This game is very frustrating. Shitty management and coaching decisions coupled with sloppy plays and a couple breaks going the Angels way leads to a very annoying time.

Why the fuck is John Farrell coming out? This is bullshit, pull Sexy Lips you tool.

allan said...

bluu: i call bullshit.

no red sox fan would look at this season right now and type: "I can also remember 1978, this year smells alot like it."

mattymatty said...

Why do we have Gagne/Okajima/Papelbon when we're just going to throw Tavarez out there to torch our chances of winning?

I'm going to go throw something at something.

laura k said...

The big question is why am I still awake?

laura k said...

OK, everyone get ready for the big comeback.

Seriously. Get ready.
