G122: Angels 7, Red Sox 5

Beckett was fine (7-5-2-1-1-8, 103), but Santana (6.1-4-1-0-5, 100) decided to relearn how to pitch tonight. MDC allowed two in the eighth, to give the Angels a 4-1 lead.

Five outs from defeat, the Sox scored four times (Lugo BB, Ellsbury BB, Pedroia single, Ortiz 2-RBI double, Manny RBI double) to go ahead 5-4. But then Gagne coughed up three in the top of the ninth.

A bad loss, but it's a regular ol' doubleheader split at the end of the day.

***

Ervin Santana (6.22, 69 ERA+) / Josh Beckett (3.24, 139 ERA+)

With Mirabelli injured and Varitek playing eight innings of the afternoon game, the Red Sox are hoping Pawtucket catcher Kevin Cash can get from Ottawa to Boston for the second game.

Update: Sounds like Mirabelli is going on the disabled list (strained right calf). Jacoby Ellsbury is starting in center field and leading off. ... More in comments.

Why Cash? from the herald insider: Even though he hasn’t been hitting well at Pawtucket, Cash has been playing well defensively and has caught knuckleballers Charlie Zink and John Barnes this season. That’s vital considering that the Sox will need someone to catch Tim Wakefield while Mirabelli is on the disabled list. Cash, who has played 114 games in the majors with Toronto (2002-04) and Tampa Bay (2005), has thrown out nearly 45-percent of would-be base stealers this season.

Probably need him for two starts catching Wakefield.

If you have a flight #, I'll see what I can do.

Michael Silverman, Herald Insider:

"Expect updates later after GM Theo Epstein meets with us at 6, but the Red Sox will make at least one and probably two roster moves before Game 2: Jacoby Ellsbury and catcher Kevin Cash for Clay Buchholz and catcher Doug Mirabelli. Ellsbury is in the starting lineup as the leadoff hitter and center fielder. Cash is not on the premises yet or the 40-man roster as we type. Mirabelli, who strained his right calf running the bases in Game 1, had his lower leg wrapped in a bandage and inserted into a boot and was hobbling around the clubhouse. Jason Varitek, who caught all but one inning of the first game, is scheduled to catch the second one as well."

allan said...

Horrigan posted at the Herald at 3:52 pm that Cash was on his way. He notes "Cash is with the team in Ottawa and the next direct flight isn't until 6:35 p.m., so he'll be making a connection somewhere".

I'm curious how this works. Do the Sox charter a small plane? Does he take a shuttle flight? Do they exist? Where did he have to go to transfer?

Jere said...

There should be a system where if a player needs to get to a certain park, and it's a total emergency, Sox fans stationed throughout the country could give relay-style rides. Fenway Park & Ride. But only members of RemDawg Nation would be allowed to join, I'm sure.

Yay Ellsbury! I'm happy.

[I replied to all the money players in the earlier game thread, in case anyone is interested. I must not be as well-traveled as I think, b/c I don't know what a colon or a durham is.]

allan said...

FSN on EI but NESN on MLBTV.

We'll try doing both (EI on mute) and see how bad the delay is.

mugro said...

Man! Not only do they have the kid sing the National Anthem, they make him run the bases too!!

allan said...

Huge delay -- MLBTV more than one pitch late. That won't work.

laura k said...

We didn't see any kid running the bases. What was that, a cancer kid?

Zenslinger said...

By the way, is our rookie pitcher's name pronounced Buck-Holtz or Byew-Holtz?

mugro said...

Yeah. A cancer kid.

Actually, all joking aside, this kid had defeated cancer enough to rid himself of his leg braces and he was able to run the bases. Actually, it was quite the scene (my lame joke aside), for this kid was a success story.

The Red Sox and the Jimmy Fund are running a big telethon today. Their goal is to raise $3 million. They are almost there!

laura k said...

By the way, is our rookie pitcher's name pronounced Buck-Holtz or Byew-Holtz?

Buck-Holtz

laura k said...

Re cancer kid, believe me, I have nothing but sympathy and admiration. Check out the game 1 thread, early on, I say I'll be choked up for half the game. And I was.

I notice Orsillo is like me. Whenever Teener interviews a young cancer survivor, when they come back to Don, his voice sounds thick.

allan said...

FSN dolts saying Beckett's pitch count "is getting up there". He's at 24. (Lackey threw 46 in his first inning btw.)

Zenslinger said...

Josh gits outta the first. Way to go, ace.

laura k said...

Just saw the kid running the bases. Nice.

laura k said...

Maybe "on his way" meant on his way to the airport. Because Air Canada 8048 (Y0W-BOS direct) was scheduled to arrive at 7:50P but is running a few minutes late.

allan said...

The "on the way" was more from me. The Herald post just said the PawSox were told he was needed in Boston.

Well, not likely we'll make this 3 for 43 or whatever that come from behind in the 8th inning stat was....

laura k said...

this game is over....

I'd rather see friggin trolls here than this shit. What kind of fan are you?

allan said...

yeah no team has ever scored 3 runs in 2 innings before ... well, maybe one time, in like 1886, but it's really impossible.

Jackie said...

Sigh. That got away quickly.

nixon33 said...

a realisitic one. sorry. i'll hold out hope upon hope just as mucha s you will...but in the end. our offense is flat. giving up late runs kills momentum and they have shielks and k-rod, and we have lugo and hinske, yay.

laura k said...

i hope anyone who says this game is over has turned their tv and computer off

laura k said...

i'll hold out hope upon hope just as mucha s you will..

That is clearly not true.

Jackie said...

To be fair to nixon33, the Angels have a terrific bullpen and the bats haven't exactly looked lively tonight. Of course, we do better against "good" pitching than crappy pitching half the time, so who knows...

allan said...

Scot Shields? Scot Shields is scaring you? And Frod, who almost blew 3-run lead to the frickin' Blue Jays two nights ago?

God, it don't take much, does it?

nixon33 said...

THANK GOD FOR CONTROL ISSUES cause we cannot hit, please prove me wrong pedroia

laura k said...

The Angels used to have a terrific bullpen. Their bullpen ERA this year is 8th in the AL, behind the Royals.

Jackie said...

It's more the lack of bat liveliness that discourages me.

allan said...

Also, the MFY bullpen -- you know, the one we make fun of every single day -- has a lower ERA than the Angels pen.

laura k said...

I guess I don't see the point of being discouraged or encouraged, and certainly not announcing "this game is over" down 3 runs with 2 innings to play. I just watch, and I know what's possible in baseball, and I wait to see what happens. I don't give up.

Patriots Film said...

you know, i don't think we have quite enough speed on the basepaths right now...

allan said...

We might lose this game -- we've lost 48 games so far this year -- but giving up on a 4-1 game with 2 innings to go makes absolutely no sense to me.

nixon33 said...

it is about the lack of bats. its just like all you of you said we cant hit bad pitching, and according to you, the angels have bad pitching....
come on Papi

allan said...

sorry - frod sucked vs the jays last night.

nixon33 said...

sorry, you guys are sooooo much better fans than i am...yawn
COME ON PAPI

Patriots Film said...

I was kinda hoping to see another pedroia bomb, but i guess ortiz would be okay....hah

Jackie said...

Of course they would have to go and try to prove me wrong. ;) But I maintain that the Angels pen is pretty good... they have four relievers with sub-1.2 WHIP.

allan said...

47 foot fastballs? never a good idea.

Jackie said...

nicely done. ;)

Now if someone could just explain why we can hit the guy with the 2.88 ERA/1.36 WHIP but not the starter with a 6.22/1.62, I'd be terribly obliged...

allan said...

oh woe is me it's 1-0 we're gonna lose, we can't hit, oh god now it's 4-1, this game is over, we suck, we can't hit, blah fucking blah blah.

ps i posted my "don't take credit" BEFORE you took the friggin credit

you don't even deserve to watch this comeback!

you gave up. plain and simple.

a fan who thinks his team can score 3 runs in 2 innings is a better fan than one who thinks all hope is lost and is ready to put an L in the standings.

if you think the game is over, TURN YOUR FUCKING TV OFF.

that's what i do when the game is over.

Jackie said...

you don't have to like the attitude either! I just wish you could refrain from attacking people for it EVERY TIME. :/

(Also, just for fun, I went to check out the Fangraph - looks our WP headed into the bottom of the 8th was around 10% (maybe a little lower), which isn't as terrible as I'd thought. I think it felt lower since it dropped about 20% over the previous half inning.

laura k said...

wish away, but it's going to change. if there's enough negative people in the game thread, i leave the thread. i guess you'll have to hope for that.

allan said...

I just wish you could refrain from attacking people for it EVERY TIME. :/

It pisses me off like almost nothing else about the game, so that is not likely to happen.

nixon33 said...

fairweather, whatever bub. grew up in the north end...and was going to games when the pink hats werent around.
but im not crying about it...

Jackie said...

There's a difference between saying "ugh, this game is over!" and still watching, and really believing the game is over (and shutting off the TV while the game is still going). I don't think being prone to a little hyperbole now and then makes someone a bad fan.

Ofer said...

This at-bat is annoying as hell... Especially on fucking Gameday- it's no way to follow a tense game.

Benjamin said...

Meh, a 13-pitch out. Better than a 13-pitch homerun, I guess.

allan said...

Maybe there's a Sox blog where everyone is whining and crying about how bad the Sox are. That game thread might be fun.

laura k said...

who cares where you grew up. that doesn't have shit to do with anything.

laura k said...

following a tense game on gameday is the worst! i do that on weekends, it's rough.

allan said...

yeah and all those fans in boston are calling weei and crying about how we are out of playoff contention.

OK, I'd say that the Gagne-redeeming-himself status right now would be something like coming in with the bases loaded and no outs in the 8th inning of game 7 of the ALCS against the yankees, with the Sox up by a run, and striking out Jeter, A-Rod and Giambi. If he could also somehow hit Giambi while he's striking him out, that would maybe even put him on the plus side. I think anything short of that wouldn't be enough (although his being an effective reliever the rest of the way would be accepted as a consolation prize).

Anyway, I realize that that scenario is completely fantastic, since the MFY aren't going to get into the playoffs...

If it ain't broke.......

Tito looked like he wanted to cry in postgame....

It's obvious Gagne's fastball is useless without his change. He is alot like Foulke in that sense. The thing with Foulke was in '04 every time he blew a save we came back and won.......

Exactly how many times must Gagn'e blow a game before the MGMT realizes he is NOT the answer??
Thought his record only shows 2 blown saves, that is because the 10AUG07 game wasn't a save situation, and Okajima took the loss. Gagne' directly lost three games and whats worse is the yanks have won each night Gagne has lost a game for the sox. Our AL East lead this morning is 5 games, but should be 8. Is Gagne French for sabatage?? His stuff is not dominating and didn't have a clean inning vs. Tampa Bay. Obviously he is not doing well, however WHY do they keep putting GAGNe in Crucial situations. I can understand against Tampa Bay but against LAA?? There had to be a better choice. Keep him as a set up man WHEN the game is NOT on the line, until, (IF EVER) he regains his dominance.

OK there is the arguement, maybe there is a little more blame to toss around. Our stupendously lethal offensive threat, and defensive gem Lugo committing 2 errors on the books but that line drive Vlad's line drive SHOULD have been caught.

Delcarmen sucked up to his normal par last night. Where ewas Timlin, or Tavarez, or Snyder?? Vlad leads off w/a Triple, and scores the nex at bat, and then theree is the homer. COME ON?!?!?

Youk and Tito were right for getting thrown out. Mostly I hope it will fire up the sox the wai Sweet Lou's Tossing sent the Cubbies on a winning tear, but not thinking so.

Joe Grav said...

His stuff is good, but he's relying too much on the fastball and is leaving it far over the plate. He just hums it right over in tough situations.

allan said...

Delcarmen sucked up to his normal par last night. Where ewas Timlin, or Tavarez, or Snyder??

If you think that was MDC being MDC last night, you haven't watched many (any?) of his previous outings.

2.81 ERA. 160 ERA+. He's allowed runs in only 4 of his 26 appearances.

Everyone would be screaming for Tito's head if he put Snyder or Lips in there at that point (and they failed).

MDC is easily our 3rd best reliever.

laura k said...

the wai Sweet Lou's Tossing sent the Cubbies on a winning tear

It's unwise to confuse coincidence with cause. If players need a manager's tantrum to make them win, they are not major league material.

allan said...

Well, Lou did win all those championships with Tampa Bay ...
