Red Sox - 001 010 000 - 2 9 0Evan Longoria clubbed a grand slam to left and Carlos Pena belted Masterson's next pitch over the wall in right-center. Those two swings turned a 2-1 Boston lead into what became the final score.
Rays - 000 060 00x - 6 7 0
Other than slogging through that nine-batter fifth inning -- a bases-loading walk and the two dongs came with two outs -- Masterson (6-6-6-3-6, 105) did quite well. Manny Delcarman and Ramon Ramirez each pitched a scoreless inning.
The Red Sox had their chances in the early innings against Sonnanstine:
1st: 1st/2nd, 1 out, 1 LOBBoston left 10 men on base.
2nd: 1st/2nd, 1 out, 2 LOB
3rd: scored 1, 3 LOB

Justin Masterson (2.70, 187 ERA+) / Andy Sonnanstine (7.78, 63 ERA+)
Ian Browne, MLB.com:
In general, the Red Sox have asked a lot out of their bullpen recently. Starters, with the exception of knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, have not been going deep into games.Boston's bullpen has the 2nd lowest bullpen ERA (2.88), but is fourth in innings pitched (75).
The last Boston starter -- aside from Wakefield -- to go as deep as seven innings? Jon Lester, on April 19.
In using Javier Lopez for a third consecutive day and then grabbing Jonathan Van Every, Terry Francona avoided calling on Jonathan Papelbon, Hideki Okajima, Manny Delcarmen or Ramon Ramirez in last night's rout. The Red Sox's next off-day is May 11.
Sox vs Sonnanstine: Lowell/Drew/Varitek good -- Pedroia/Ortiz/Youkilis bad.
Rays vs Masterson: Pena: 3-for-6, 2 doubles, home run.
Rays Notes: The 18 straight batters retired by Matt Garza to start last night's game set a franchise record, beating Sonnanstine's 17 batters (Mariners) on August 7, 2008. ... The Rays wear some new alternate jerseys for the first time tonight!
Etc.: The Royals turned six double plays against the Blue Jays last night, tying an AL record. (Oddly, the Royals hit into six DPs less than two weeks ago, on April 21 in Cleveland.)

He's giving up a ton of hits and walks whenever he works, though.
Was Pena the only successful ray to bat against the Master? Surely he wasn't the only rays starter to fare well.
It could be worse we could be back 5.5 games coming into tonight.
Anyone know whats going on with Remy?

Why? it's not like Masterson is 6 year veteran....and last year when he faced them , if i recall he was lights out...
Two starts v FKR last year; 4 runs in 6 innings both times.

Ugh. I so wanted Ortiz to swing on 3-0.
Nix, no one seems to know.
I wonder if he is recuperating from chemo treatments. I have absolutely no knowledge - DO NOT START A RUMOUR - and hope I am wrong. But that's what I've been wondering.
Oh, Dustin.
that's 2 quick ones for buck

Buck just said it: David ORtiz.
Strange about Remy. At least Masterson's dealing so far. F Train is underway.

Dear Buck Martinez,
There is no Catch-22 for the pitcher, just two hitters. Please stick to baseball cliches and do not butcher the English language.
Thank you.

So, I assume that when Dice-K gets back, Masterson stays in the rotation and Brad Penny gets taken out behind the shed?
EL: I fuckin hope so.
Penny is also fast becoming the new Face. Bad ump call, error, whatever - he melts.
well hit by slugo
It must be really uncomfortable for Sonnansuck to pitch with such an enormous horseshoe embedded in his backside.
masterson did not settle in in the 1st? he K'd the last 2 guys.
so the sox need masterson to go deep?
52 thru 4.

laa still up.
Is it wrong of me to wish pain upon Longoria for celebrating like that after a homer in the fifth inning of a game in May?
In case anybody has forgotten, Andy Sonnanstine is still pitching for Tampa Bay.
Not anymore he's not.
Howell the Red Sox come back?
Stay tuned!
It was a bit much. But unless you want to sound like a Yankees fan, it's best not to whine about other teams celebrating, I think.
maybe i missed some of it, but it didn't seem like much of a party
buck has got to be at 7 or 8 now.
ant blame masterson, he;s been pitching well, just had a minor meltdown, too bad it killed the happiness of me seeing pettitte's meltdown.
Well, I certainly don't want to be compared to a Yankee fan. But he was shaking his fist in the air as he ran up the first base line.
Baseball is a strange game. If you'd asked me for the most solid part of the Red Sox before the season started I'd have said the starting pitching. I guess you never know, huh? And, it's early, I know.
I know, I saw it. I think it's best not to whine about those things. Just MO.
MLBTV comes in late -- I miss 4 pitches.
I shouldn't say you'd sound like a Yankee fan. I should say you'd sound like Michael Kay.
That's worse. Much worse.
buh-bye gabe!
Much worse - right.

I thought he did it quite low key.....and we have a closer who shows a lot of emotion in April
9c = correct
Shit if I just hit a grand slam I would be doing cartwheels....
Good point 9C. I wish Papelbon would just be cool. I think it makes more of a point when a pitcher smokes the batter and just saunters off.
Just my personal preference tho.

I agree we spoke of this before.....Like Pedro did..just stare at the guy
Right. Pedro - Mariano too. (Except against the Red Sox, where he slinks off after blowing the save.)
umm, buck, the rays and red sox did not face each other in the world series last year.
Oh WS, ALCS, what's the diff. ;)

Mo's Classy when he saves a game....
But when he blows one, the bewilderment is hysterical..
percival brought the intangibles.
man.
no remy means i get a nice pbp guy buthave to endure the shit i usually mute from espn.
Buck, I don't think Joe Maddon is that concerned with Percival's intangibles. He probably is more interested in his pitching abilities.
Buck said even on the DL Percival had an impact! He must be really great.

Yeah, by not pitching, he couldn't blow games, so Tampa got more wins.
i will accept the score being 6-4 in one minute.
"Mo's Classy when he saves a game....
But when he blows one, the bewilderment is hysterical.."
Bewilderment, that's exactly what it is. "How could this be happening... again???"
In my other life I used to like his smile after a save. It's getting to be a long time ago.
i will accept the score being 6-5 in three minutes.
I'm ready for a Doung, how bout yooo?
Two men on and Dan Wheeler is coming in. I like where this is going.
What time are the games this weekend?
"ERA somewhat inflated"
We can change that into just plain huge.

I gotta get away from the computer. Enjoy the comeback, everyone.
I was watching that yankee game and pettite came unglued with guys on 1st and 2nd ..kept stepping off and faking to second even threw one to jeter who was at his normal postion, O'neil and Flaherty kept wondering why he was so concerend with a 4 run lead.....turned out they were right..O'neil actually does a nice job in the booth......
Yankees bulpen blows.......How Cashman still has a job is amazing to me....
speaking of bullpens that blow - Yankees have scored 4 in the bottom of the eighth, now trail the Angels by just one run.
"they sure are"
wouldn't a bad first month create MORE pressure to defend your pennant rather than less?
RAM TOUGH
clean water. bah.
[9C, I agree re PO'N in the booth, he's a bright spot. Leiter is good too, don't know if he's around this year.]

LOBotomies SUCK!
My LL team lost a 5 - 6 game Tuesday night after leading the whole way when we walked in the tying and the winning runs in the last inning.
Meanwhile we had left bases loaded in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th innings and 2 on in the 7th.
