Red Sox - 011 100 010 000 - 4 15 017 LOB. 3-for-22 with RISP.
Angels - 102 000 100 001 - 5 11 0
Opposites:
Julio Lugo: 5-for-6***
David Ortiz: 0-for-7, 12 LOB
Brad Penny (6.90, 72 ERA+) / Ervin Santana (2008: 3.49, 127 ERA+)
Instead of facing Joe Saunders, we get Santana, who will make his 2009 debut.
Santana was sidelined by a collateral ligament sprain in his right elbow during spring training. David Ortiz is 5-for-9 against Santana: .556/.636/1.111. It's time to get that big bat going.

When Daniel Bard (the bringer of cheese) came out of the pen for his major league debut last night, the Angels had runners men on second and third:
"To be honest with you, I thought there was just a guy on second until the third pitch I threw. Then I looked over and saw Hunter on third. I hope Farrell doesn't see this.

By the way, how have we managed to win 21 games (only Toronto and the LA Dodgers have won more) with our starting pitching performance so far?

Yay, Pedro's back.
TC and Daubach live from the Boston Garden. Weird to see a baseball pre-game show with ice and yellow seats in the background.
Ok no more fucking around and making nobodies look like Cy Fucking Young.
WIN.
hahah -- standing around like tourists
"By the way, how have we managed to win 21 games (only Toronto and the LA Dodgers have won more) with our starting pitching performance so far?"
I was wondering about this yesterday.
I've come to the conclusion that we have been scoring more runs than our opponents.
a fairy tale return for Dustin
hello all. Following along on cbs game center. They predict both Abreu and Ortiz will hit their first home runs today.
laa tv guy mark gubiza praises the plate ump for "not being afraid to ring up ortiz" on a good pitch.
little jerry seinfeld?
Little Jerry pulling a Lucky Cliff
you know it.
Almost Reese-ean
jason: you gotta dive into the stands on those. or else they don't count
Did you hear where Papelbon selected Bay as "toughest guy on the team"?
Little Jerry, cool blog! A kindred spirit, I see. See my most recent "what i'm reading" post. :)
rootin tootin beckett is not tough?
I thought Little Jerry's blog is just a blog he reads...
How can a blog on your profile page not be your own blog? Does blogger do that?
Oh yes, my mistake, it's a blog LJ follows, not writes. Still a cool blog to follow.
It's under "blogs I follow." But, of course, him just reading that can still make you kindred spirits.
three bat flips this series, one HR. You'd think he'd learn to stop making a fool of himself.
Jacoco Scaredsbury

Jere, right, I saw that as soon as I finished posting my earlier comment. (See right above your comment.) And re kindred spirits, probably. Just not as impressive as writing it himself.
You just freaked me out thinking that an old embarrassing blog of mine is still listed under my name. A friend is one of the founders for labornerd. Its no JOS, but still very good.
Rx!
Oh no, nothing embarrassing has been revealed yet.
gets the b. n.
ump still not a coward
"Gum-BALL! Gum-BALL!"
jeff walking and chewing gum at the same time
These Fox announcers are acting like they never heard called strikes before. Going insane.
so gumball got hit. rats.
lugo will save us
1-1 us.
Secret Single!
torii luckii that wasn't an inside the parker
here comes a dong for Jacoby, on a hanging breaking ball
actually, now I just want a single.
yeah, a homer would clear the bases and end the rally.
Sluuuu-go, yeah man.
well i'd like every guy to hit a homer but I'd prefer Jacoby slaps one to the outfield to get the two runs there instead of taking a big upper cut swing and popping out. Is all I'm sayin.
Bit of an ugly 5th inning for San Diego:
BB BB BB BB 2B 2B
Still no outs.
Whoops, there was an out. First batter.
nice catch from the canuck
qu'kinning
5 pitch inning/
Penny looks to be very efficient in the first two innings today. I like seeing them swing early and get outs from contact.
no that's fair assholes
YOU FAT FUCKING COCKSUCKER THAT WAS A FAIR BALL I COULD SEE IT IN REAL TIME YOU CUNTY MOTHERFUCKER.
Clearly fair.
they call it fair and sosha will start crying
I saw it live too, didn't need a reply, clearly fair.
biggesr whiny mf-er in the game.
"qu'kinning"
nice! how arctic of you.
Bit of an ugly 5th inning for San Diego:
BB BB BB BB 2B 2B
Still no outs.
People like to focus on the Nationals because they combine terrible on-field performance with hilarious off-field mismanagement, but people shouldn't lose sight of just how shockingly awful the Padres are.
good job by David and Jason
Fox: "Pedroia almost came up short."
Doesn't he always?
(Says a short person.)
38 RBI in the 25th game for Bay. Not exactly Longorian, but still pretty fuckin' awesome.
I know HD is the current thing or whatever, but companies should keep regular TVs in mind and not put important things like their phone number in the corner of the screen where it's almost entirely cut off on a "regular" TV.
gubiza saying how smart pedroia was for knowing the liner would be caught and going back to tag.
no, you idiot. he went back because if it was caught, he could advance, and if it was not caught -- and it nearly sailed over abreu's glove, he could have walked home.
it was the smart play no matter what.
plus because fy was on third, it was a "productive out"!!!!
Sac bunt, K, flyout plz
way to get em over centaurus
K, sac bunt, flyout plz
SOmehow I don't think Bobby's sacrificing here.
The sac bunt request was addressed to Izturis (1st and 2nd, none out), and he botched it.
K, flyout, sac bunt plz.
I was referring to the second request where the sac bunt came as the second out.
Annoyii
Sheeeit.
Yeah, I realized that after I posted. Benjamin's obviously being facetious.
FREE CLAY BUCHHOLZ
Runs, please.
At least that wasn't a one-pitch double play.
Way to take pitches, fellas.
kinda similar to Penny's inning
woohoo!
LBJingle
will Papi's first dong be grand?
Hopefully Santana missed the memo while he was gone about pitching inside to Pedroia.
I sort of wanted Pedroia to swing on that 3-0 inside fastball.
ok papi, now is the time.
now is always the time. but NOW would be very nice.
here we go, parent of Slam's parent.
Kinda makes Bailey and Tek look like assholes for swinging away.
wait, no..whatever, just hit a grand dong
Heh, a day game. Yay. Of course, I just got home and have to make dinner soon. But a few innings is better than no innings. And we are tied up!
NOW is the time, Daveeeeed!
starting...
crackpatch
ack
next time
God. Dammit.
poor david...
I miss Papi.
all part of the plan to get him at 2B
Hey everyone. Love these weekday afternoon games. Of course I say that every time.
I am also glad to see the Red Sox tying the game. Not glad to see Ortiz still struggling but he'll get out of it at some point. But that's why there are 9 hitters in a lineup and not 1.
Drew's got one of those deceptively strong arms. He can rare back if needed.
Good job by Drew getting rid of the ball quickly.
Sadly, I'm also slightly impressed that Bailey managed to get out of the way.
Secret Weapon!
CLIMB THE LADDER
So Lugo, you DO know what to do with that glove!
Hey everyone. Love these weekday afternoon games. Of course I say that every time.
I'd rather they be earlier in the afternoon if they're going to be afternoon games, though, since then they finish before I have to think about leaving work. (Of course they are, local time.)
Weekday day games are the best. I wish I was there.
Announcers praising Tek for what Allan always rags on him for.
gubiza actually prasiing tek as "the best in the game" at standing up when he wants a fastball up.
oh
my
god
Why don't I remember that there was a team in 1890 named the Cleveland Infants?
I love the 3:30 start - it's when I usually finish being productive for the day anyway. I can get a good day's work done, watch a game, and still have an evening free. Ahhhh.
gubiza actually praising tek as "the best in the game" at standing up when he wants a fastball up.How many catchers do this? Is it more than one?
The Cleveland Infants? Wow!
true. if he is the only one, he IS the best. as well as the worst.
infants? western or american association or something>
Loving that Bay!
BAY with the balt dong
Butcher can be on the all-?? team with Weaver, Baker, Hunter, Fisher. I think it was the All Trades Team.
Players' League.
Did the Infants play the Orphans? Probably not I guess.
didn't paul o'neill's great-grandfather play on the infants?
L, in my case I love this 3:30 start tonight because it doesn't conflict with hockey and basketball, and be able to go to bed at a normal time tonight! Sox at 3:30, Celtics at 7, Bruins at 8. Plus another Game 7 hockey game (ironically the Anaheim Ducks and Red Wings) at 7.
Just fuck you, Tek.
Been chatting on line with my daughter so have missed all the chat here. Oh well.
And we are still tied.
3:30 start time works for me (though I missed the first hour). I get to see part of the game before my eyes are falling out of my head.
Amy, you haven't missed anything. That's one of the good thing about gamethreads. They're fun when you're here, but you don't miss anything if you're not.
Ish, you're such a fan, that's cool.
"didn't paul o'neill's great-grandfather play on the infants?"
LOL. Excellent.
okay, time to head home. Hopefully will catch the final inning or two. Go Sox!
Well, I am going to cook and watch, but cannot type also. Be back if the game is still on when I am done. But let's hope we break this tie soon and win in nine innings.
"you haven't missed anything. That's one of the good thing about gamethreads. They're fun when you're here, but you don't miss anything if you're not."
Not making the regulars feel too good about themselves!
Oh sheesh, I'm sorry! I'm including myself in that of course. I think of it as very in-the-moment fun.
Maybe I prefer to think you don't miss anything because I miss a couple of gamethreads each week!
On second thought, we are creating great literature here. Miss a thread and you might miss a Pulitzer Prize in the making.
fsn talking about the angels fielders shading their eyes from the sun with their gloves before making the catch.
they show two replays, hunter and mathis, and they both do not use their glove. good work guys,
FY!
I'm just gonna go ahead and predict the Papi dong every time now.
Please sir, we'd like some more meatballs
that ball almost hit the ground! Well, almost.
Oh man. How sad about Papi.
"yankees suck" chant at the big A
haha Hunter. eat it.
Why do people "where I'm at"? "Where I am" is all you need. No need to add "at" to that.
No need to add "at" to that.
It's like saying "have got" instead of "have". Don't be such a prescriptivist.
Just a common grammatical error, and not considered an error in all circles.
Soon it'll become a new contraction. 'm't. And then people will add at to that, too. "Where I'm't at." = "where I am at at."
Tourist: Excuse me, do you know where the library is at?
Professor: Sir, at Harvard we never end a sentence with a preposition.
Tourist: Oh, excuse me. Do you know where the library is at, asshole?
On second thought, we are creating great literature here. Miss a thread and you might miss a Pulitzer Prize in the making...............Please sir, we'd like some more meatballs
EL, that's a classic. Love it. :)
Why do people "where I'm at"? "Where I am" is all you need. No need to add "at" to that. - I'm always reminded of Forrest Gump where Jenny's father is looking for her and he always says, "Where you at?!"
And then those Boost Mobile commercials. Where you at?
Fox announcers are dumbfounded by all the called Ks.
why is bill mueller being so mean to us?
why is bill mueller being so mean to us?
This is the Jon Miller type of Miller.
That explains it.
the ump is not a pro.
i think angels announcers are sounding shocked because LAA's pitchers suck on ice.
still gonna lose this one to us, though.
well, the pen sucks.
jeemer time
Dave Roberts was right. Was talking on the previous batter all about how Penny was taking longer to throw, and how he's not gonna ask out, but that the manager has to be pro-active with his decision making. And then the guy triples.
I swear this anncr just said, "Manny comes in, makes a diving catch," then after said Jason Bay made a great catch.
I heard a bit of Dave Roberts yesterday. These replacements are giving me a new appreciation of Remy.
That commercial called trust an emotion.
SW - 3 hits!
The Slooog-ster is batting .317 since his return.
pedro up
L, I said that out loud a few minutes ago. Eck and Dave are making Remy look very good right now. I like their insight but from a neutral prospective of watching a broadcast, they do make Remy look good.
lugo nearly picked off there.
I didn't get any insight from Roberts. I thought it was one cliche after another.
Eck just sounds bored!
okay, now Dustin ties it. Minimum.
I GOT TWO TURNTABLES AND A MICROPHONE
nice Dustin!
FUCK YEAH!!! Boy print that one huh? A good time to be taking off from second too!
FUCK YEAH!!! Welcome back!
for fucks sake, flo, do it now.
Almost!!!! Surprised it carried as far as it did but DAMN.
Fox anncrs saying it feels like a playoff game. That's not good for the Angels!
thanks for the free out fucktard
Torii would have had that one. Cock!
lyndon needs work with walls
Yeah, Don, I'm not sure why he didn't catch it either.
I feel like Drew should've been sprinting over, I kinda doubt he was.
That attempted catch was Abreu-esque.
It's a freakin' triple festival today.
That was NASTY.
OUT!!!!!!!
9-2 fuckers!!!!
Abreu shows the kids out there what NOT to do!
DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
ON FIRE with the arm!
How many triples in this game so far? Anyone know the record?
Ram-Ram hanging chill with his .50 ERA.
ONFIREEE
good good good walky walky
And I am back for the top of the ninth! Score (still) tied!
Or I should say, tied again.
Well, this game has had a bit of everything. Drew with two outfield assists, FY 4-4, Lugo 3-4(!), three Angels triples.
The team triples record is 9 by the NL Baltimore Orioles in 1894.
Time to get Pedro his fifth win of the season.
and my onfire comments shows up about 5 minutes after i send it.
go rico!
You rock!
11 triples by both teams, 1894
Rico suave! [credit to jere]
gumball up - sticky situation for fuentes
That 1894 Baltimore squad had 153 triples! The most any AL team has ever had is 112.
Yay for the fan!
haha! Now capitalize!
Well, it was the NL Baltimore team, not sure if they were actually called the Orioles.
Did that guy have SOX on his shirt?
