G35: Angels 5, Red Sox 4 (12)

Red Sox - 011 100 010 000 - 4 15 0
Angels - 102 000 100 001 - 5 11 0
17 LOB. 3-for-22 with RISP.

Opposites:
Julio Lugo: 5-for-6
David Ortiz: 0-for-7, 12 LOB
***

Brad Penny (6.90, 72 ERA+) / Ervin Santana (2008: 3.49, 127 ERA+)

Instead of facing Joe Saunders, we get Santana, who will make his 2009 debut.

Santana was sidelined by a collateral ligament sprain in his right elbow during spring training. David Ortiz is 5-for-9 against Santana: .556/.636/1.111. It's time to get that big bat going.

***

When Daniel Bard (the bringer of cheese) came out of the pen for his major league debut last night, the Angels had runners men on second and third:
"To be honest with you, I thought there was just a guy on second until the third pitch I threw. Then I looked over and saw Hunter on third. I hope Farrell doesn't see this.

Thanks. Can I get a record for the modern game? 1800s don't count IMO.

Amy said...

What a waste....

Amy said...

Up to Tek....

Jere said...

It was the Orioles.

Jere said...

Those O's existed from 1882-1899

allan said...

tek RH - can he hit osmething?

Amy said...

Where is your cutoff for a modern game, Laura? I agree 1900s don't count.

Shit, Tek, a pop up?

Amy said...

I mean 1800s. But also 1900s (the decade).

laura k said...

Thanks ump.

Unknown said...

Wasted opportunity...

laura k said...

It's not my own cutoff - baseball had very different rules then. It wasn't the same game. I think you have to look after the AL and NL both existed.

Jere said...

AL record in 9, in 1922.

allan said...

start in 1901 - first year of the Al and the "modern era"

though the NL does go back officially to 1876.

Zenslinger said...

They bringing Ramirez back in? I would think so.

laura k said...

There have been a lot of teams called Orioles, I think. That's why the current Baltimore club took the name.

Jere said...

So 9 is probably the record, but there could be other NL games with 9 or 10, too.

Jere said...

we go extras. That was painless.

laura k said...

9 or 10 triples in a game, that is crazy. You got to wonder about the outfield.

Unknown said...

5 pitch OTT

Nice

Zenslinger said...

Five batters, eight pitches?

I don't miss Coco that much.

Amy said...

So MLB defines the modern era as 1901? But lots of rules have changed since then also, most notably the designated hitter rule, of course.

Plus ballparks have changed, balls have changed, etc.

For me, the modern era started the :)

laura k said...

Was the record in the deadball era?

Amy said...

the year I was born. Sorry---I stopped typing too soon.

Zenslinger said...

Comments seem to be coming in all kinds of order.

Jere said...

The 9 game was in Yankee Stadium, back in the true death valley days.

Amy said...

SCORE SEVERAL RUNS

laura k said...

The game is always changing, but even basics were different then. And there were leagues that existed for one year and disappeared, tons of teams everywhere. For consistency, records for the game we watch now begin in 1901.

allan said...

most triples in one game by one team since 1954 is 5. last done in 1986.

Jere said...

'22 is post deadball

Unknown said...

The 1986 Phillies had 5 in one game in 1986.

Link

laura k said...

Wow, Francona tossed.

laura k said...

I could easily read Terry's lips there!

Jere said...

Most triples by one team is 6, done twice in post-deadball era

Edward Lee said...

About damn time, Tito.

Rob said...

My dad seems to think it's an unwritten rule that managers can't argue balls and strikes. I think it's a written rule.

Is it a written rule?

SECRET WEAPON! Would rather have that strike instead of the walk now!

laura k said...

Secret weapon strikes again! He's a fucking hit machine today.

laura k said...

True death valley days, I wish I could have seen the Stadium then.

OH SHIT Lugo in rundown.

Rob said...

Not so hardcore, Slugo!

Unknown said...

LUGO 4 for 5!!!

laura k said...

It's a written rule. It's immediate rejection.

Unknown said...

Gah

Amy said...

1954: a fine dividing line. The year Harvey was born.

OK, LBJ in scoring position. Let's drive him home.

allan said...

no BBI to FY?

Jere said...

Actually, it wasn't at Yankee Stadium--it was Yanks at Detroit, 6/17/1922, 6 for Detroit, 3 for the Yanks.

Amy said...

So what was Terry saying? I always wonder what they can say beyond, "That ball was high, you asshole!"

allan said...

1954 is only as far back as we have reliable PBP info.

Amy said...

Wow, I cannot believe he got that.

laura k said...

fucking torii the annoyii

Jere said...

fuck. I thought maybe Jacoby tags and scores from 2nd but not at all...

Edward Lee said...

Plz to be extricating your head from your ass, Jacoby

Rob said...

My goodness! Jacoby you should be taking notes. Maybe he was!

Rob said...

Well that inning went downhill in a hurry! Damn. Big Papi :(

Unknown said...

And now it's up to Papi...again...

Breaking out of the slump would be great here.

Amy said...

Arggh, that is FRUSTRATING.

nixon33 said...

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

laura k said...

"So what was Terry saying?"

I saw "fucking bullshit" and "no fucking way". Getting his money's worth, as they say.

Jere said...

The other AL game with 6 by one team was 9/17/1920, Yanks vs. White Sox at Comiskey.

Unknown said...

WHY?!?! Why would you hack at the first fucking pitch?!

Rob said...

Little dribbler up the first base line again for Tiz.

Jere said...

ANd the third 6 (the one in deadball) was Chi/Milwaukee in 1901.

laura k said...

"WHY?!?! Why would you hack at the first fucking pitch?!"

Maybe because you're tired and frustrated, and don't believe you can get a hit today.

Imagine how much it sucks to be Papi right now.

Rob said...

I wouldn't be surprised if this went three or four more innings.

Amy said...

You are a hell of a lip reader! I cannot imagine sweet little Terry saying those things. ;)

Rob said...

0 for 6 for Ortiz.

At this point it's no longer about trying to spark him. He needs the pressure taken off of him somehow. Seriously where do you go with this?

laura k said...

I hope not, Ish, cause I'm really hungry and we haven't even started making dinner. :)

Amy said...

Well, Ish, at least it is early. What time does that other game start? Some kind of hockey game? Or is it basketball.

Just kidding!

Rob said...

Love me some Pedro Ram-Ram dominatrix!

laura k said...

"You are a hell of a lip reader!"

On the Fox feed we have, it was very obvious!

Amy said...

So Lugo is hitting, but still can't field for shit.

nixon33 said...

I LOVE RAZOR RAMON

Unknown said...

I'm sure he's frustrated. And I still believe he's going to break out at the plate sooner or later. But still, that's no reason to abandon patience at the plate.

laura k said...

Pups are hungry too!

Rob said...

You are a hell of a lip reader! I cannot imagine sweet little Terry saying those things. ;) - And those glasses aren't helping his touch guy look, that's for sure!

Unknown said...

In other news, Pedro just pitched two OTTs on a total of 13 pitches.

laura k said...

"But still, that's no reason to abandon patience at the plate."

Easy for you to say, sitting at home at your computer. It's got to be more difficult than that - or else everyone would do it.

Amy said...

We have eaten. Dog eats only once. Cats are on demand feeding with food always available.

Rob said...

Ram-Ram is the Man!

laura k said...

Our dogs only eat once, too. And they're waiting impatiently for it right now.

(They get treats for breakfast, but they're waiting for the real meal.)

allan said...

Ram: 2.2 IP on 16 pitches!

allan said...

closest abreu has been to a wall in 5 years

allan said...

MATHISBALLA

Amy said...

Cassie eats in the morning. And gets treats as the day goes along.

Bay on! Now, let's CAPITALIZE.

Unknown said...

Free baserunner!

allan said...

fuck the bunt - hit a double

Zenslinger said...

Ha HA, Bay can't stay off base even when he strikes out.

Rob said...

Funny. Francona gets ejected and Mills has Green try for the scrotum bunt.

Amy said...

DAMN. DAMN.

Jere said...

I read the article about the 1922 game, and FUCK!!!, and, anyway, a few of the triples went to right field. At Tiger Stadium back then, it was 370 to right. The Yanks also thought a catch by Cobb should've been ruled a triple as he caught it among spectators.

Unknown said...

Bleh, DP

Unknown said...

It feels really weird thinking that Lugo is one of our best hopes for winning this game.

Pedro, MDC, and Bot have combined for a 0.69 ERA so far. That's fucking insane.

Rob said...

Snuffin' Time!! Without the save opportunity.

We should let Mills manage extras more often!

Unknown said...

Ooh, Bot in.

Nice

Amy said...

Nice!

laura k said...

fuck yeah!

allan said...

regular 2B gets that chest high!

Amy said...

Torii Hunter is sure pesky.

allan said...

pbp guy says hunter is missing only double for cycle.

he doubled in the 3rd. he needs a dong.

idiot.

Edward Lee said...

Papelbon's arsenal looks like crap right now.

Pickoff/CS please?

Jere said...

I like to imagine Tito rushing around, gathering all his things, all while manically shouting instructions to Mills as he scoots down the tunnel, like Terri Garr on the way to her first day of work in Mr. Mom.

"If Velazquez cries, it either means he's thirsty or tired the bottle's in the fridge Put Baldelli down in the twelfth DON'T let him stay up later than that bye!"

Amy said...

Uch, my stomach does not like this situation.

Amy said...

OK, one more strike.

allan said...

any thought of dealing with rivera instead?

allan said...

fsn shows scoreboard -- already a 1 in the bottom of the 11th for ;laa...

Jere said...

hey I thought you loved those called Ks, ump

allan said...

1 is gone now.

allan said...

will tek decide to elevate????

Jere said...

"fsn shows scoreboard -- already a 1 in the bottom of the 11th for ;laa..."

Donnie Moore.

Jere said...

"1 is gone now."

Donnie Less?

Jere said...

we go 12

Unknown said...

Jam escaped.

Score runs please

Edward Lee said...

Hell yeah.

Meanwhile, the Ducks just executed the worst 5-on-3 power play evar. Suck it Anaheim.

Jere said...

Jays walk in a run in the 1st, 1-0 NY

Amy said...

A Tek bloop!

allan said...

Has Lugo ever had 5 hits in a game before?

Unknown said...

That's a start

nick said...

just got home thinking I missed the game... not over huh!

caught the last 4 pitches of the previous inning.

Zenslinger said...

Kind of amazing that Hunter hasn't scored today.

Zenslinger said...

I thought the comment that Bulger should be on the All Penis Team was the best of the week. Was it L-Girl's?

allan said...

Lugo has had 5 hits 3 times before.

Jere said...

three times

Jere said...

yeah. 3 times.

Amy said...

LUGO! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH THIS GUY!???

Amy said...

4 times now.

allan said...

why are the sox batting this HIT MACHINE 9th? morons.

Unknown said...

IF HE DIDN'T, HE DOES NOW!!!

Damn Lugo, I'm almost speechless.

Amy said...

Good thing this rental has NESN Plus. We did not have it at our house.

allan said...

fy at the battle of the bulge(r)

Unknown said...

Loaded for FY

Jere said...

NESN+ MUCH louder than NESN

laura k said...

Look, a scoring opportunity... Many such opportunities. Come on now. We're hungry here.

Amy said...

When are they switching?

Jere said...

Pedroia can NOT equal Lugo's 5-hit game total today.

Rob said...

What a game! I just finished eating dinner. Homemade fried chicken, roasted red potatoes, homemade cheddar garlic bread, and adult beverages!

Jere said...

Dustin couldn't have just hit a fly ball there? Come on

Amy said...

Damn. Is it time for Papi to start feeling better? Can he get some RBIs now?

laura k said...

Dinner at Chez Ish sounds great tonight.

I just lit the bbq and put the chicken in to marinate, while Allan fed the dogs, and then we both ran back to the TV.

Zenslinger said...

All on Papi.

Again.

Jere said...

2nd GS chance for Papi today

Amy said...

Ish, don't talk food. Allan and Laura are hungry.

Unknown said...

Okay Papi, please get us a lead here.

Please

laura k said...

And fried chicken and red potatoes! Only some of my favourite foods! :)

Jere said...

launch one, David

laura k said...

Oh man Ortiz, you can be such a hero here, as you used to be...

Jere said...

the payoff pitch!

Amy said...

I am feeling the pressure for Ortiz.

Amy said...

OMG, we blow another opportunity.

allan said...

17 LOB ?!?!?

laura k said...

fuck

fuck fuck fuck fuck

and

fuck

Jere said...

the opposite of a launch

Benjamin said...

Asinine.

nixon33 said...

David needs some time off.
Brutal fucking inning.

Amy said...

I am glad you started your dinner, Allan and Laura, because we may be here all night.

I bet Tala and Cody are happy also.

Zenslinger said...

Did Papi dig up an Indian burial ground and not tell anyone or something?

Unknown said...

Wow...

Well, I can't blame him for not being patient at the plate this time.

allan said...

my scorecards hold 12 innings; i expect to use a second one this evening.

Zenslinger said...

12 LOB for Ortiz.

allan said...

winning pitcher: bard?

Jere said...

"Did Papi dig up an Indian burial ground and not tell anyone or something?"

ayuh

Edward Lee said...

Ortiz's WPA is -.547.

Unknown said...

Double play would be great here

allan said...

Angels PBP guy said, when Willitis went out, that Kottaras has had trouble throwing runners out, "there was that game in which Car;l Crawford stole 6 bases".

Jason Varitek caught that entire game.

Rob said...

FAILballscockasspenis in a laundry basket!

Amy said...

Oh, well, we sure blew that one. So many chances...

laura k said...

*sigh*

potable water

Zenslinger said...

Ah, well. Couldn't expect to get too many more chances.

Fun game in its own maddening way.

Unknown said...

That game sucked

nixon33 said...

YOU ABSOLUTE MISERABLE FUCKING PUSSY MOTHERFUCKERS.
EMBARRASSING.

Rob said...

Hockey time!!! And basketball! And hopefully we will forget about this stupid Red Sox result and move on to Seattle.

nixon33 said...

wasted day.

Zenslinger said...

"Did Papi dig up an Indian burial ground and not tell anyone or something?"

ayuh
Are you thinking the Micmacs, too?

"The soal of a man's haht is stoniuh."

laura k said...

I thought it was a fun game too (like Zen). I'm glad I don't take these losses as hard as you guys. That must suck.

No hockey or basketball for me, but on to dinner!

allan said...

Off to dinner ...

9casey said...

Maybe I missed it searching the thread , but why didn't they have Ellsbury bunt Lugo to third in the 10th?
