Red Sox - 100 310 020 - 8 11 0A great afternoon in a shitty building in a fine country.
Blue Jays - 100 000 010 - 2 5 0
Lester (6-3-1-3-12, 115) set a career high in strikeouts, fanning the side in both the fourth and fifth innings. Ks by inning: 220 332.
It was the most strikeouts by a Sox lefty since Bruce Hurst struck out 14 A's in a nine-inning shutout on May 5, 1987. [L and I were at Fenway for Hurst's next start -- another complete game shutout -- on May 10. It was L's first game at Fenway!]
Kevin Youkilis belted two home runs, both solo shots. Jason Bay followed Yook's eighth inning dong with one of his own, on the next pitch from Brian Wolfe. Bay also doubled in the first inning, immediately after Yook's first bomb, and walked twice.
Dustin Pedroia broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth with a three-run shot off the left field pole. It was his second home run of the year; he hit his first on Opening Day. David Ortiz doubled to start that rally; in his other four at-bats, he grounded out to shortstop, popped out twice to third, and struck out.

Jon Lester (6.07, 80 ERA+) / Ricky Romero (3.08, 146 ERA+)
The Red Sox's record after 50 games in recent years:
Boston has scored only 4.2 runs per road game, more than two runs fewer than their 6.3 average at home.2004 31-19 0.5 GA
2005 27-23 4.0 GB
2006 30-20 Tied
2007 35-15 11.5 GA
2008 31-19 2.5 GA
2009 28-22 1.5 GB
Dustin Pedroia: "We've got to find a way to score runs. ... It's not early anymore."
Rookie left-hander Ricky Romero gave up five runs on 11 hits (including three dongs) in 5.1 innings on Tuesday in Baltimore, his first less than impressive performance (log).
BP 2009:
Romero throws in the low 90s with a good curve and change and gets a ton of ground-ball outs ... but he continues to struggle with both command and control, as evidenced by his walk rates. He walked 20 in 42.2 innings last year at AAA and 55 in 121.2 innings at AA in 2007. In his four major league starts, he's walked a total of five batters (2, 0, 2 and 1).

Wow, I try not to tell people to panic, it's sounds like FY has a little panic. It maybe easier to score rns if he doesn't get picked off today...And it still is early isn't
In these matters I will defer to the opinion of the players. If they want to get all pumped up to score a lot of runs I am not gonna sit here and say they shouldn't panic. They can score runs in every game. The entire order has the potential to have massive production. They just need a kick in the ass and maybe FY is the catalyst for the team. I see them in the dugout after hits or k's and they are talking it out.
To me FY sounds like he some urgency, but not panic.
But as Andy suggests, if the players need to panic, fine. We don't have to!
It's not the first time I think Tito reads JoS :>) !
Dustin Pedroia, 2B
J.D. Drew, RF
Kevin Youkilis, 1B

Mike Lowell, 3B
David Ortiz, DH
Jason Varitek, C
Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
Nick Green, SS
Lester has had a 4+-run inning in 5 of his 10 starts. Let's cut that shit out!
ha! I just read andy's comment and saw "They just need a nick in the ass". I guess I come to expect a certain quality to his posts.
I really want to stay in and watch a non-loss, but I think it'd be only fair to let emma experience some more of the great outdoors (plus we need groceries for dinner).
I'll sneak in an inning or two perhaps.
I like how I project my pervy mind on andy's clean comment. I may be a republican yet!
I think it'd be only fair to let emma experience some more of the great outdoors (plus we need groceries for dinner).
She's young, she'll have years of chances to go outside.
Tim is at the game -- WIN it for Tim!
shut the fuck up about fucking college sports!
(25 innings is cool, tho!)
SULTAN OF SWEAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YOOOOOOOOOOOOK!!!!!

Castig: His college coach should be indicted.
I better stay off the thread before things like YOOK and FUCK YEAH end up in legal documents.
Alright, maybe we can hold the first-inning lead this time. And increase it throughout the game.
Glad to see Tito finally realizing that Ellsbury sucks at getting on base against lefties.
I managed to go take a shower after my 1:01 post and still be back for first pitch.
Being greedy I wanted more, but who doesn't love a Sweaty Dong?
Box and PBP of that 25 inning BC game here.
Fragging Lester, pay attention.
Bleh

Well, he managed to avoid the big inning, which has been a problem for him all year.
Let's get that lead back.
Strong breeze, darkening sky, thunderclap. clearly I am supposed to stay and watch the game.
Actually the 4th or 5th seems to be his big inning. Long way to go yet.
That's a wee bit high and inside...
Actually the 4th or 5th seems to be his big inning.
True, but seeing him get out of one jam with minimal damage is somewhat encouraging.
"Ellsbury sucks at getting on base against lefties."
I love it when he proves me wrong.
wtf? did lyndon lure a confused green too far off?
totally shitty confusing recap by castig before commercial.
Nick...what the fuck?
spiders have 3 in the bot 3rd against the mfy

What's with the lefties hitting against this lefty? This is not supposed to happen....
One fun thing I like about baseball on the radio is how the guy sometimes goes right into the short commercial as if it is part of his play-by-play thought.
O'B chats about the game and then suddenly in the same tone of voice "wrangle up some chicken ..." -- I always go WTF for a split second.
Kevin said...
Nick...what the fuck?
Sorry, my bad.
Papi Half Dong!!!
Eh???? That wasn't a home run? I'm watching on a small TV...
Yeah it's not a home run. Haha.
Papi double!
"Sorry, my bad."
Haha
Scrotum bunt!
I like the bunt strategy.
FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!
JOCKEY DONG!!!!!!!
FUCK YEAH!! It's not the size of the dong it's the motion of the ocean!
Okay so "motion of the ocean" doesn't quite work but I'll think of something!

3K inning
Nice
I'm enjoying the oatmeal today!
Nice, we're into their bullpen.
I'm glad to see them taking more pitches today.
Rx!
Rx!
double for lowell??!! That's out of character. [/sarcasm]
One of those good feelings when a guy says something like that then goes out there and immediately backs it up on the field.
Checking on ESPN gametracker since I am doing something important. I am flying my flight sim program in a charity event to raise $ for Cystic Fibrosis research.
Joe is liberal with that 'squander' word. I'll take a run with a smile.
Good luck with the fundraising, M.
Patrick, I thought the same thing re "squander". We got a run, glass half full!
Another K
Another K!
this is that troubling 5th inning for Lester...
damn, he's dealing!!!!
10th K!
6th consecutive out by the K.
wow - K machine.
Fuck BABIP!
I wouldn't be surprised to see him back out for the 6th.
only at 97 pitches
these guys always are ripping on don orsillo. It's pretty hilarious.
"only at 97 pitches"
Yes, and the only two games so far that he's gone less than 100 he allowed 5 and 8 runs.
"If you want to plan for Orsillo, you have to plan for meals - first and foremost... And of course the gym time. Those all-important 18 minutes a day..."
Jeez Lind is rejecting the pitches like a cricket batter.
Lester now at his career high for Ks - 11
11th K!
Career high!
missed the DO talk! damn.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!
Don and Rance were talking about Eck...
Rance just said, "When I found out I would be doing this, on Wednesday morning I spent all day making sure I knew how to pronounce Masterson's name correctly."
!!!
KKKKKKKKKKKK
Make that 12!
12th K!
K by inning: 220 332 - 12
"making sure I knew how to pronounce Masterson's name correctly."
ROFL
Then Rance said "That's why I also try to make a point not to read lips..."
Hahaha ripping on Eck. Love it.
Don: "Well as our next guest commentator in Detroit says, that had hairy cheese on it."
Rance. Beautiful.
Eck's "shit" was alluded to in the papers, but I do not think "masturbate" was.
Don just lost it when Rance said that about Masterson.
Now that was the Lester I am used to seeing!
And so did we here in the living room.
Me: Eh? .......OOH. OHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! BURN.
Hi, everyone. Been outside in the garden, etc., but with one ear/eye on much of the game. We did a sacrifice bunt? Wow. And Papi had a double! And LBJ bumped from leadoff.
Big day. Maybe all that stuff is working.
Don just lost it when Rance said that about Masterson.
I'll bet!
OB said it was the first successful sac bunt of the year! In Game 51!
YA-Fucking-HOOO!
I know, I know, it ain't over yet.
But 2 Ks per inning for Lester and he's through the 6th - I'm a happy camper.
Just stopped by the house for a tad, had to check in.
Trying to decide between getting the damn yard and garden work done (the 4 straight weeks of rain has it looking shit around here) and going to hear a great little jam band at my favorite bar.
And FY hit a dong! Guess a little panic is ok.
Heidi says this is the first time the Red Sox has ever played in Canada with two Canadians on the team.
The band sounds like more fun, SoSock.
Weather turning here on the Cape---rain coming after a mostly sunny day.
Skydome is quiet!
13th double for Flo. Same # as Bay and 3 fewer than Dr. That's a surprise.
Ha, I heard that comment about Masterson's name, but I wasn't sure what he was referring to! LOL.
"Heidi says this is the first time the Red Sox has ever played in Canada with two Canadians on the team."
And on the radio they say "native Canadians". In Canada that means an aboriginal or First Nations person. Kottaras and Bay do not qualify! :)
Amy it's a good thing you're on the cape and not at home because you'd have an unpleasant most-of-the-day rather than sunny most of the day before the rains.
Up here we had a nice morning until the rains came around 2:00 this afternoon. Some thunder. Some wind. Meh.
I am just always happy to see Papi get on base and not walking with his head down back to the dugout.
"OB said it was the first successful sac bunt of the year! In Game 51!"
And he went on and on and on about it.
Dr. Doubles doing it again! Double your pleasure, Doc.
Really, Ish? I hadn't checked the western MA weather. But I am always happier to be on the Cape, regardless of the weather.
Doctor Doubles!
The Doctor is in! Operatin'!
DO: "Mike Lowell scampering to second with his second double of the day."
Lowell can scamper?
Yeah Obie has a tendency to keep banging on about things. Like the first game Ortiz batted sixth.
Yeah, I wasn't really happy about the bunt. Now that Allan has shown me stats that suggest it is usually a bad move. And it was. :)
Amy I was looking at the radar, at the rain and thundershowers coming and they were all coming from western MA.
Prescription double
BJ Ryan?
There's a tasty rag arm.
"Lowell can scamper?"
No.
Well, Ish, I can't say I wish I had been there for the rain!
Ryan in 12 games:
10.2 IP
15 H
11 R
8 BB
10 K
9.28 ERA
2.156 WHIP
Dig in, Tiz!
These ominous clouds caused my very beloved sunday ultimate frisbee game to be canceled.
It's not supposed to rain, but the lame-Os wussed out. I'm peeved.
MFY's tie it up in cleveland
Well Amy, the band would definitely be more fun, but the yard looks I might need a bushhog if I wait any longer and I have LL games Monday and Tuesday nights. Thursday also. The constant rain has me in a bind with make-up games. Trying to figure out how to manage my pitching is a bitch.
8 hits and 6 walks for the Sox vs. 3 and 3 for the Jays. That's the Sox I know and love :)
Heh. Walking Varitek to get to Lyndon.
tag that lefty...
SoSock, a bushhog??
Lots of weather watching on this thread today. I'm at work. It's always the same here.
It's a fun part about summer. Getting those big thunderboomers. Love em!
Thunder and lightning scare me...especially in our little cottage here. But so far, just some ominous darkness out there.
Hoping Lester's turned a corner with this outing. This is the Lester we all know and love.
Yes, no bad inning this time. What a relief.
Amy - probably means a brush hog, which we used on the farm. Big rotary mower pulled behind a tractor, we used it to knock down brambles etc around the woods (to keep fire hazard down).
Bush hog - a tractor implement for cutting high fields that can handle small shrubs, saplings, etc.
I used the term around a newbie on our grounds crew this year and he had that cleless look, so one of the other guys picked up it and started describing the "bush hog" for him. You know, the small member of the pig family that is sometimes used like a goat to keep fields down :)
It's still the standing joke of the year on weekend mornings at the field.
I am cautious around lightning but it doesn't scare me. I certainly don't like being in the open. But I like being outside, underneath an awning or a bridge or overpass. In a building with an open window...
But I certainly don't crouch down and go to the center of the house during a storm.
Getting dark here again.
Ah, that makes sense, S1C. I was envisioning a really big hog that pulled out bushes or something. Or a big hog from the bush.
And yes - is referred to as a brush hog just as often, although my grandpa used bush hog, so I still do.
So is it bush hog or brush hog? Or two names for the same thing?
lightning messes with my wifi. I don't appreciate that.
Ish, I am a close all the windows and cover my ears type with thunderstorms.
But your photos of thunderstorms make me realize what I have missed. Which is ok. PHotos are good enough for me!
It seems a Bush Hog is a brand of brush hog.
The things I learn here...it astounds me.
I really don't care for lightning during the day though.
Day thunderstorms are where I like to see the ominous, black clouds that form into walls and swirl around and such.
Night time is where I want a good lightning storm where I don't have to worry about things falling from the sky except for rain. At least if things get crazy during the day you can see what's coming. Can't at night.
But lightning at night is amazing.
Amy - I arkansas we called it a brush hog.
It's funny how we tend to get scared of thunder, when all it does is tell us what's happened.
Some Tek loving going on. :)
The old man dog, hates the thunder, becomes the biggest baby in the world when we get thunderstorms here.
Most of the cats I have had do not like thunder. They do not like loud noises. The dog is indifferent.
I'm not actually a doctor, but I am a real worm!
Top of 9th 4-4 in Cle, MFY's have runner on 2nd w / 1 out.
Green = money!
Well, this time, anyway.
Another scrotum bunt!
Don: Pedoria with a bunt bid..."
Drink!
Another sac bunt? Or was he going for a bunt hit?
Cody needs xanax for storms. She wasn't afraid when she was younger, but in her old age she's terrified. It's horrible to watch. The xanax works great, tho.
Ok, why is FY bunting?
Go ahead, FY, just panic a run right on in here.
OK, that time the bunt paid off.
I use Xanax for flying. Great stuff.
It's tough when you don't know what's going on, all you hear are loud booming noises.
1st & 3rd 1 out in cle, Posada at the plate and hits into a dp.
Xanax is just great. Klonopin is great too.
I just like drugs :)
I'm a MUCH bigger fan of the bunt to move the guy to 3rd with 1 out than I am the bunt to move him to 2nd.
Especially when looking for that all-important Geico run.
Youuuukkkk!!!
YOUK!!!! Nice!
YOUK
SULTAN OF SWEAT!!!!

BAY goes B2B!
all these dongs making me giddy!!
Insurance run.
SWEAT & THUNDER!
Holy BTB's Batman!
GDGD catches up just in time to show 2 HRs.
LOVE IT!
I love flying. Flying means I'm traveling somewhere, so I'm happy.
Speaking of doubling your pleasure...
Laura, I bet you are a bit surprised that I use Xanax to fly, given my general reluctance to take meds.
I have never flown before.
I am in NO rush.
I get the impression my internet is running around a batter behind.
Nice to see our offense is still with us!
Red Sox making Tim happy today!
Lead off walk in cle.
Okay - I've now lost my window to go hear music. The band is off at 4:30. But this has been fun, and the yard is really calling my name, not mention Cat's garden, which I HAVE to keep up.
So, with a healthy lead, I'm signing out.
Sing Dirty Water shortly for me!
I love traveling, hate flying. Xanax changed my life.
Ish, if you aren't afraid of lightning, flying shouldn't bother you much. Flying (they tell me) is safe---I am sure much safe than standing under something to watch lightning!
"I love traveling, hate flying. Xanax changed my life."
I know many people who say this. Anti-anxiety meds are amazing.
Did Yanks just lose? Is that what I just read? Walkoff walk by Cleveland?
(Harv not saying anything about it.)
Amy I think when I get over the hump of flying once I'll be fine.
"I get the impression my internet is running around a batter behind."
Radio goes first, then regular TV, then MLB TV, then GDGD. The delay between radio and GDGD can be huge!
taking off is fun. tons of metal plastic and flesh accelerating at a ridiculous rate. I like pulling geez
If I'm traveling anyways I would much rather drive. I have control and I can actually see things and enjoy the trip.
All depends, obviously. If you need to be in LA tomorrow you can't exactly drive there.
Taking off is the hardest for me. I like landing...it is almost over, and I am in a new place (or home).
Nice to have that BIG lead.
WHATEVER.
Crushed it.
I *love* road trips. But you need a lot of time, a luxury I don't usually have. Plus all the places you can't drive to because there are oceans in the way.
I see god hit a home run. Jays fans can wake up momentarily.
I forgot the Jays were actually wielding bats. weird.
I assume you are driving to Boston for JOS1, not flying, Allan and Laura?
I am doing a lot of flying in real life in June, Going to Puerto Plata DR for vacation for a week, then Boston to Sacramento thru Dallas and back again later.
We have a general rule that we will drive anywhere within 5-6 hours, but beyond that, if the flight is reasonably priced, we will fly. But I prefer the car.
The only road trips I've been on have been in a bit of a hurry. We weren't consciously in a hurry but we wanted to get from Point A to Point B. That was the objective.
Still tied in cle, 1 out spider on 2nd
Real life, Meuniermr? As opposed to virtual flying or us just talking about it? :)
s1c, didn't you say walkoff walk?
Last trip I went on was 2006 down to Washington D.C. Left Portsmouth at 3:30 AM by car and got to DC at 1 PM. Burrying my grandparents at Arlington National Cemetery.
Reason we left so early was we went down there on October 9th and came home the 10th.
No I said a lead off walk AMY
Not an ideal inning, but I'll take it.
Thanks, I guess it was wishful thinking/reading on my part. Leadoff, walkoff---heh.
Another walk and brak brak at the plate.
I actually like the "smell my new phone" commercial on the radio. I generally despise all commercials.
