Red Sox - 111 100 200 - 6 11 0The Red Sox constructed a picket fence against Hughes (4-7-4-4-2, 94) and Jason Bay added a two-run dong off the left field foul pole against Alfredo Aceves (4.1-4-2-2-7, 70) in the seventh. Jonathan Papelbon recorded five outs for the save. (The game was delayed more than two hours and did not start until 9:23.)
Yankees - 000 030 010 - 4 9 2
Hughes walked Dustin Pedroia in the first and David Ortiz hit the first of two doubles to right field; Pedroia scored on a passed ball. Mike Lowell led off the second with a first-pitch homer to left, his sixth of the year. In the third, Lowell's single brought home J.D. Drew. In the fourth, Ortiz's second double scored Jacoby Ellsbury, who had hit a ground rule double to left.
Lester (7-6-3-2-10, 111) cruised through four innings, having struck out the side for the first time in his career in the first. He fanned two in the second and one each in the third and fourth. His 10 Ks matched a career high. In the fifth, he allowed back-to-back home runs -- on consecutive pitches -- to Johnny Damon and Mark Teixeira. That cut Boston's lead to 4-3. Teixeira homered against off Ramon Ramirez, ending Ram's scoreless streak at 14.1 innings.
The Yankees loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth against Bot, but -- what do you know? -- Robbie Cano struck out to end the game.
The Blue Jays lost to Cleveland 9-7 in 12, so Boston is only 1 GB. The Yankees stayed 3.5 GB.

Jon Lester (5.40, 94 ERA+) / Philip Hughes (0.00)
Eight days ago, Boston finished a three-game sweep of New York, beating them at Fenway Park by scores of 5-4 (in 11 innings), 16-11 and 4-1.
The Red Sox visit Yankee Stadium III for the first time tonight and begin a two-game set. And the Yankees are praying:
(Rain is in the forecast, however.)
A few Sox talked about seeing the new stadium:
David Ortiz:
I can't wait to get there. ... [I]t seems like it's going to be another hitting park, from what I see. I'm not mad about that.Dustin Pedroia:
I heard it's like a resort.Julio Lugo:
I didn't like the old one very much. I didn't see the ball there very well. That joke just writes itself, doesn't it?
Lester makes his sixth start of the year. For Hughes, it's his second start. Last Tuesday, he went 6-2-0-2-6 against the Tigers. It's also his second appearance against the Red Sox. In the first one (April 13, 2008), he was pounded for six hits and seven runs in two innings.
Reliever Damaso Marte, who had not pitched since the Boston series, was put on the 15-day disabled list with tendinitis and weakness in his pitching arm. Anthony Claggett -- who made his major league debut by allowing eight runs in 1.2 innings -- is up from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (AAA). ... The Yankees have signed Casey Fossum to a minor league contract.

It would suck to train it all the way to the Bronx and have it rained out!
Nix, I hope your seat isn't anywhere in this picture. Especially not the bottom left.
Doesn't look promising, weatherwise. Doubleheader tomorrow?

Cafardo:
"the tarp is on the field here at Yankee Stadium where the Sox and Yankees are about to engage in a new chapter of their dynasty in this new ballpark."
Their wha??
Jere, haha. I've been hearing about those seats for months now. Yanks fans complaining big time.
I lie that they put TVs on the wall so you can watch the play you cant see. Good thinking! So ridiculous...
I'm actually down by the left field foul pole, where Youk is going to wrap one if they play tonight. I have tix for tomorrow too, which they'll definitely get in.
Looks bad though, I don't think they'll play tonight.
Redsock/L-girl- don't know whether you get all 4 Rogers Sports Channels (with Cogeco here, they seem to come automatically with the digital box), but all last week they showed the NESN feed for Sox games on Sportsnet 'East'. Don't know whether it's some kind of policy change, but one of their promos blares "over 100 Red Sox and Yankee games." Worth checking out (btw, their 'West' channel showed YES--tonight I see it has the Rays game). Since 'Ontario' has the Jays, maybe they're showing Division rivals.
woti: we did know and we took full advantage last week. it was great. i keep meaning to write to rogers and thanks them. if we play tonight, i hope i can avoid al yankzeera.
called L in jersey. she says there has been an on and off drizzle all afternoon. gross, but playable. we shall see.
nix: i read something that a guy was in the bar out there and they didn't even have the game on! some other shit was on tv!
RS, Thats hilarious! I wonder what they were watching? Yankeeography?
How can two teams have a dynasty in a ballpark? Or is it in reference to just the Yankees having a new chapter of their "dynasty" in their new ballpark? And why would the "new chapter" start tonight and not for the first game of the stadium?
As a sidenote I've always thought that Cafardo had a thing for the Yankees. Like he works for the Globe but it really a closet Yankee fan. He seems more interested in them than Boston.
The night I was there (preseason) they weren't showing the games on those TVs for the obstructed seats. The TVs were just little versions of the scoreboard. So you could see replays and stuff, but as for seeing what was going on live, you were screwed.
ish--I was actually gonna say, "Cafardo was probably dreaming about Yankee dynasties while meaning to write 'rivalry'." If he was ever a closeted Yankee fan, he's clearly out of it.

URISoxFan: "Apparently, the drainage in the new Stadium isn't as good as in the old."
RingoOSU: "We have a...
wait for it....
CLOGGED TOILET??"
Rice just told a story of how Big Stein once fired a kid for putting the wrong soda in the fridge.
ESPN Radio interviewing Jeter about his thoughts on the Ortiz jersey that was buried and uncovered in the new Stadium. Great job ESPN, great job.
Jeter on Pedroia: "Size doesn't matter".
This game on EI and on Rogers. We'll see who has what. I am preparing to go what in L's office on MLBTV.
YES on BOTH
FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Still no Remy. I am getting worried about the guy....
well, this give time to set up elsewhere. fuckin' shitlickers.
Allan, are you speaking in code? I am trying to decipher your last two posts!
Where is Ish, our official weather forecaster?
Two different channels are showing the game tonight (EI and Sportsnet) -- and they are both showing the YES feed. Therefore, they are lickers of shit.
I have moved everything back down to my cave, where I have: my laptop with MLBTV/NESN and L's laptop for threading.
Cave, eh. Aging any good cheese down there?
"Where is Ish, our official weather forecaster?"
I'm also big on....oh just forget it.
Is this like a "man cave," a term I keep hearing more and more to refer to a media room?
I was waiting for that response, Jere. I figured it would get a rise out of you.
No cheese. Just my messy office, which I like to rarely leave.
And I thought we didn't use the man prefix, we just go with the actual word: crush, purse, date, tits.
I do wish I had a TV showing a tape loop of The Steal, though.
looks like the rain is just about to clear out of NYC
The Yankees are praying for rain
Yes, man cave seems more insulting to men than to women. Like you guys are from the Stone Age or something.
none of the Boston pro sports venues have a 400 section--I'm curious, what section 409 are you from?
Well, with L gone, I *am* wearing a burlap sack and gnawing on a turkey leg....
LOL! Love that image. I hope you are sharing the bones with Tala and Cody.
Well, not turkey legs. Not too good for dogs.
No, they have to go kill their own dinner.
From what I know of cody, that means she will be eating sticks. Not so sure what Tala can catch.
Now we get to compare Joba's mug shot with HIS MOM's!!!!
they said a decision would come around 8. So, it's 8...
I hate Jon Miller's call of LBJ's steal of home so much: "A steal of home, and it works! Jacoby Ellsbury Has Stole [sic] Home!" He's such a mouthbreather.
Any word yet on the game? the weather? I have tuned out of the rain delay programming.
Jere said...
Now we get to compare Joba's mug shot with HIS MOM's!!!!
Jere, I know you lived there for awhile as well, i didn't know you good buy meth in Lincoln......or maybe it wasn't till Joba hit it big and bought his mother her own lab...
Tom Caron: no word yet on any decisions at Yankee Stadium.
Drizzling here. I didn't gnaw on bones but I did have some amazing rib lamb chops.
"don't know whether you get all 4 Rogers Sports Channels (with Cogeco here, they seem to come automatically with the digital box), but all last week they showed the NESN feed for Sox games on Sportsnet 'East'."
It was like having NESN! Thanks for thinking of us, Woti.
Hi, Laura! How was your trip? How's the family?
I'm still at home until they make a announcement.
Do you think the long delay means that they are hopeful about a window? Otherwise if the forecast was shite, wouldn't they just call it?
an announcement, rather.
Hey everyone. Saw on ESPN a few minutes ago that they might get going in about an hour. 9:30 or so? 9:40?
I was visiting my mother in the hospital earlier - sometimes rain delays are convienent. Although I'm not sure I should be saying that here...
Hey, Ish, is your mother okay??
i wonder if i should call rogers and talk them into changing their feed to nesn. i think i once did that and it worked -- or they realized they had two channeles showing the same station on their own and switched it.
Amy, yes she's doing fine now. She'll be home tomorrow. She can't wait to get home and see... no, not us... the cats!
Can't blame her.
That's good. I didn't know she was in the hospital---must have been while I was missing games this weekend.
Allan, on my cable there are two channels playing the same thing all the time, and one station that plays the same thing on THREE channels!
Then again, this is Time Warner, who feel it's important for us to know when a severe thunderstorm is impacting someplace 100 miles to the north and won't ever come near here.
Hi Amy, my trip is great so far, thanks. Lots of fun stuff planned. :)
But I just popped in, I can't sit here and thread at my mom's. Well, I could, but it wouldn't be very polite. Bye for now.
Bye, have fun!
9:20 start
nix, get over there!
This video of unbearded Youk is just so weird to watch.
called rogers -- and failed in my bid to help sox fans across canada.
the guy said they do not control what EI feed they get and they show the home feed on sportsnet, which is mfy. BUT last week, the sox were in tampa and sportsnet showed the AWAY feed of NESN every night, so.........
anyway, i'm shit out of luck re the TV.
Allan, my condolences from this side of the JoS land.
Dealing with that in the playoffs watching the Celtics too. Stuck with the national broadcast douches.
Sucks even more since you can't hear Eck and Dave Roberts. Got NESN on MLB.tv though right?
Surprised EI didn't have both feeds.
NESN Crawler: "Watch Don, Dennis, and Dave bring you all the action from the new Yankee Stadium."
That suggest that Roberts will be there for more than just a few innings. But we'll see.
EI does not offer both feeds -- that should be the next step, since you can get them both via mlbtv. I think there was both feeds of a sox game once in 3 years.
i can get nesn on mlbtv and am trying but the two 'puters don't want to play nice next to each other. gotta wait until they go live to see if it'll work. if not, it's back upstairs to yes.
Hey look! Ortiz just hit a home run!
...in 2005.
NESN just showed a classic Papi dong off Myers. Those were the days.
have roberts replace heidi.
he's hotter anyway.
It was actually 2006 it looks like. Bot was in the bullpen.
if tizzle can't go yard at the new loo, should we panic?
have roberts replace heidi.
he's hotter anyway. - Now you've crossed the line into the Unhealthy.
Can't go yard if you strike out... Pop it up in the infield - maybe it'll carry out.
are you kidding me?
most male sox fans would rather hang out with roberts -- and make him breakfast, too!!!
NESN is showing the date of is game on the Red Sox Classics logo but the Rain Delay logo is covering the date!
What does that make me if given the choice between Heidi and Roberts I chose Heidi?
"That suggest that Roberts will be there for more than just a few innings. But we'll see."
Don signing off the other day: "For Tony Mazz, Theo Epstein, I'm Don Orsillo...."
So it doesn't necessarily mean that, but I gotta figure Roberts does significant work. He interviewed Jacoby earlier.
THe old game on now is '06--Damon's return.
It means you are not a true Red Sox fan. I'm sorry.
Kim and I burst into applause as Pap strikes out A-Rod...and then she says..."why are we clapping?"
Ack -- that was me!!! L must have signed me out from NJ!
Wow guess I'm not a real Red Sox fan! I'm all Roberts until the clock strikes midnight and it's bed time.
It was this game in May 2006.
I thought that was somewhat strange coming from L... Haha!
Woohoo, they're actually gonna play it. It's gonna be the first game I get to watch this season...
Evening all, btw.
Orsillo: "going to be getting underway here in about four minutes."
Pre-game meet at home plate. Getting close to first pitch!
I have moved to L's office and am commenting from her computer (and wonderful chair) -- with mlbtv on laptop. I expect YES to interrupt the Jays radio on EI.
There it is -- but is it YES?
Go ahead, Don. Tell us how many seconds until the start, too! Clearly you're rounding when you say four minutes! Be exact!
Rain still falling on the American flag...
I have the TV on mute - did they air the national anthem?
EI has switched to espn; YES still on sportsnet.
mlbtv shitting le bed on the laptop.
anthem was played on organ as they showed scenes from the park
thanks baby hughey
That must be some sort of a contractual agreement to air a game at Yankee Stadium. You have to air the national anthem and GBA. They don't even air the anthem at Fenway!
Lofting one a couple seats into the RF porch sure would be nice.
Nice.
I was thinkin' they showed anthem just because of the odd timing of everything. We'll watch for it tomorrow.
Nice Papi. Let's score two and then fivequickinnings.
Fuck The Slump
Eck thinks it's a good sign that Papi is pulling the ball. That's what he does, Eck.
The Hoose call
1-0 us, fuckers
Molinaballa!
MOLINABALLLAAAAA
Runs are good.
Whoa! I missed the start, and there is already a run and a man on third!
PASSEDBALLA
After the TB series, I'm hearing phantom cowbells in the crowd.
oral hershiser breaking out the kneepads for hughes.
Here comes a dong for drew
soft quarter dong
Eck doing that "root for the pitcher" routine. Much like Orel Sax, I guess.
Allan, breaking out the knee pads like trying to call pitches? That's what Eck was doing. And getting them wrong.
Bleh.
Wish we'd gotten more than one run. Sort of like the TB game.
One good thing about Eck being in there instead of Remy: Eck has only three letters.
Hey, a west coast game! oh...just a rain delay. But LUCKY ME!! I can listen to the entire game!
you missed the "oral" clue....
K, flailing
K, tipped into mitt
Don getting into the whole "fielding pct." thing.
Don: "The Red Sox fielding percentage is only good for 11th in the American League!"
"this ball had some hump on it"--Eck.
Non NESN people: Don was wondering if Eck would say a ball had "hair" on it, and Eck said, "I'm not gonna drop a hairball this early." But he almost used it there.
That curve was a beauty.
Ks the side!
Go Lester!!
Lester looks HOT!
KKK
WOW. Struck out the side.
Eck's sort of mumbling in the booth.
Sit, Sit, and Sit
hey oral:
lester > hughes
Fuck Huuuuugh
LOWELL dong!
HELLOOOOOO BANDBOX.
Rx Bandit!
DOCTOR!
R MOTHERFUCKIN X
Get daddy's rain machine ready, Hank!
Doc Dong!
Loving this game so far.
Thank you Mike Lowell - Mr. Ex Skankee
"Mike Lowell - Mr. Ex Skankee"
I always forget about that, but it's true.
I feel the same way of the Red Sox playing the Yankees after having played the Rays as I used to feel a couple years ago about the Red Sox playing the Rays after having played the Yankees.
for all the talk about papi, teixeira's OPS is only 60 points higher (680 vs 620)
"I feel the same way of the Red Sox playing the Yankees after having played the Rays as I used to feel a couple years ago about the Red Sox playing the Rays after having played the Yankees."
Have to say I disagree with you 100 percent on that one.
These red undershirts are such an improvement compared to that early west coast trip.
Jere I probably wouldn't have said it if the Red Sox weren't leading right now.
fair point
Rays take 3 out of 4 against us and are now trailing 8-4 against Baltimore in the 9th.
45 pitches.
after moving all the fuck over the house, i return to the bedroom and have the usual setup, laptop for commenting and whatever feed on the tv (espn)
...
late but ... RX!!!
Don, don't tell us "the pitch count is rising." Tell us the NUMBER of pitches it's risen to!
jays with 2 in bot 9th to tie bal 6-6
Nibble nibble nibble.
spiders in tor, not birds
jays with 2 in bot 9th to tie bal 6-6Must've read the NESN crawler wrong. I swore it was O's leading Rays 8-4.
Don, get Eck into it more. Suggest wacky things, trick him into accidentally cursing, etc.
Cheryl trying to close it out against FKR.
I can only pop in for a moment because I'm at work, but I just want to say I'm SICK of the Rays and BOTH Ovechkin and Crosby had hat tricks tonight. Caps win!
I was reading an interview in Sports Illustrated because we got a subscription from... something... Dan Patrick interviewed Eck and at one point in the interview asked what Eck thinks people would think when they think of Eck. I forget what he said, but Patrick says he thinks of the porn mustache.
Hearing Eck try to read a promo is entertaining.
Eck reads the ad copy with no issues.
Pepe I watched most of that game - simply incredible.
espn says last inning was 1st time lester K'd the side in an inning
yeah it was funny:) But he got each word out.
Eck reads the ad copy with no issues. - But he sounds like I would sound in high school when the teacher would call on me to read.
So many empty seats.
media can blame the empty seats on the rain
Heidi, I'm not crazy about your hat.
How many empty seats would there be at Fenway for the same delay length?
Pepe I watched most of that game - simply incredible.
Man, I hope it goes 7.
I'm starting to genuinely HATE the Rays. I mean Yankee-esque HATE.
Hey, if you HAD a three hundred dollar seat, you'd use it, right?
good play, way to get 1
GREEN!!!!!!!!!
Go Green!
yankee fans confused; suspect sox have 5th infielder behind second.
NO, that's a shortstop that goes to his left.
Do you suppose folks watching at home at Fifth and 72nd look at all those empty seats and think they should buy one?
Shit. What happened to first inning Lester?
Green still > Lugo
DP Please?
Melky dp, please.
the dud will abide.
Haha
That was incredibly satisfying
Second and third with 2 out in the bottom of the 9th and Crawford batting in Tampa.
Sit.
Sit
sit down, teat
Cheryl holds on. O's win 8-4.
FUCK YOU SIT
haha
I love how Lester just strolls off the field. So cool.
Sit
sit down molina ya fat fuck
we're 40% official
lester sees no need to jack off after a K - walk away like you swatted a small fly.
sox: keep that picket fence going.
Dave Roberts in the booth now.
Dave Roberts! Three-man booth...
Don: "We're now officially a three-man booth!"
Dave: "The three amigos!"
Exactly, Allan. He could give Papelbon a tip or two. The cool approach is so superior.
Dave thinks Papi's gonna get hot...
"just playin' some light catch - oh was there a batter there?"
It takes two to cover for Remy? And still no word on what is wrong with Jerry?
A leadoff walk.
may have to watch the archived game for roberts tomorrow....
