Cleveland - 001 030 302 - 9 13 0Boston had the bases loaded with one out in the fourth and could not score, as Nick Green struck out and J.D. Drew grounded to second.
Red Sox - 020 000 000 - 2 8 0
Cleveland promptly took a 4-2 lead in the next half-inning. The Red Sox had only one man on base -- David Ortiz's opposite field single -- over the next four innings (5th thru 8th) as the Spiders pulled away.
***
Carl Pavano (7.46, 65 ERA+) / Justin Masterson (4.37, 116 ERA+)
Although Pavano has allowed 34 hits in 25.1 innings (five starts), he was dealing against the Tigers last Friday. He threw seven shutout innings, allowing only three hits, before surrendering a couple of runs in the eighth. (SoSH series preview)
Meaningless, but fun: Pavano has a 24.75 ERA in Fenway (four innings in two starts, in 1998 and 2003) and Red Sox hitters are 14-for-27 against him (.519/.536/.963).
Jacoby Ellsbury, on his right hamstring, which forced him to leave last night's game in the fourth inning:
When I stole the base [in the first inning] it got really tight, it was so tight it got kind of a little tremble ... iced it up, got some treatment, feel as best as I can considering what happened. ... I'll come in early [on Wednesday], get some treatment on it, we'll see ... I think things are pretty good.Kevin Youkilis is unsure if the tightness in his left side will prevent him from playing tonight.
Terry Francona, on the cold and rain in New York:
I think Jason Bay was the only guy who thought it was a nice night out there.Bay:
This is a nice summer day sometimes where I come from [British Columbia]. ... I'd rather take this than 95 degree days.In 13 "late and close" plate appearances -- after the seventh inning with the game tied, a one-run game or with the tying run at least on-deck -- Bay is hitting .615 with five home runs and 10 RBI.
Daisuke Matsuzaka threw 47 pitches for Pawtucket last night, going 2.2 scoreless innings and allowing two hits, two walks and a HBP. He struck out five.
I think I'm ready to pitch in a [major-league] game. I wouldn't go so far to say I don't need any [more rehab starts], but I feel physically ready.Dice will pitch on Sunday for the PawSox in Columbus.
Josh Beckett allowed 10 hits for the third consecutive start. As far as the talk that Beckett has become "curveball happy", the Bleacher Report says that's a lie.

Keep the line moving.
I love the comments Bay made about the weather. You Canadians are tough!
Amy: Here's more from Tito:
"You know what, we get on him all the time [about that]. He's the one guy, he comes out of the dugout and pops his head out, it's like half-snowing and he goes, 'God, is it beautiful out here.' He doesn't like the sunshine in spring training when we are in Port Charlotte (Fla.) and he's losing the balls in the sun and it's 95 degrees. He was happy as could be last night."
On whether he thought Joba Chamberlain intentionally hit Jason Bay with a pitch:
"Oh man, you know what guys? How'd I know that was going to be asked? It's real hard for us to see into someone else's head, and so probably most of the time try not to. ... the game has a way of playing itself out. It's a long year and we play them a lot of times and I'm sure there's times when we do stuff and they're over there yelling like a couple of nights before.
*******
Farrell was far more blunt:
"[Chamberlain] strikes out 12 guys, doesn't seem to have too many command issues, and if there was a purpose or intent to throw up and in, or if the intent was even further than that, to send a clear-cut message, you can disguise it a little bit more than with a first-pitch pitch in the middle of the back to Jason Bay. So, those things aren't forgotten. We know that there's a history there between the pitcher in New York and our guys here, so, not to say that he was specifically out to do that, but I think history speaks for itself. And we've got a number of games left with these guys."
Globe, on Ortiz: PANIC!!!!
I love the comments Bay made about the weather. You Canadians are tough!
Darn right!!!
Though Bay is from Trail, B.C. It gets like 100 degrees there in the summer.
Globe, on Ortiz: PANIC!!!!
I had a big argument with some Yankee loving guy last night about who's doing worse -- Ortiz or Teixeira.
I love Farrell. He seems like the real deal hard ass.
Anyone know how mad the Youk injury is? Oblique injuries are kinda bad, right? Doesn't it take weeks for guys to come back from them, depending on how bad it is? I hope it's mild.
Darn right!!!

Oops. Beg pardon. It gets nearly 40 degrees there in the summer!

Don just announced that Jerry's recovering from cancer surgery.
Statement from Jerry:
"I want to focus on completing my recovery so that I can return to work without distractions or interruptions... I hope that disclosing my bout with cancer will reinforce the dangers of smoking to every member of Red Sox Nation, especially children"More at nesn.com I suppose.
HEY cakey!
(L was right..... :<( )
Siddown, Ass-Dribble.
Hey, someone flipped the switch and i missed it :)
Hey, I was the first one to say I thought Remy was sick! I want credit! Why did you only mention Laura?
:)
On a serious note, that makes me really sad. I hope that he has a quick and complete recovery. I knew something was up as soon as I saw how thin he was.
That was quick.
Hope they all are. Top halves, I mean.
Probably wasn't lying about the pneumonia either. Hope he recovers well. I love Eck but I don't like the reason he's in there.
I should have put my last comments in ALL CAPS.
Lead-off Drew should be done more often.
amy in full wiseass mode.
drew= fire
It's a start :)
so much for the start
So much for that start...
Didn't ven pull it :(
Yeah, I am feeling wise-ass-ish. Finished with one set of bluebooks, awaiting the next set. Had a beer at dinner to celebrate. So just watch out! Don't mess with me tonight!
Ish and SoSock on the same page.
oh, you're *allowed* to have a beer tonight?
Bellyflop by FY, but nice try.
Well, I think I was allowed to have the beer. I forgot to check first with the powers that be.
Probably wasn't lying about the pneumonia either. Hope he recovers well. I love Eck but I don't like the reason he's in there.
It makes the people questioning his work ethic look a bit like assholes, though they were misled.
I hope Remy recovers but also hope he stays off my teevee. He can wear the Wally suit or something.
Sports night tonight goes into overdrive. Sox on now, Bruins game just beginning, Caps/Pens and then at 8 the Celtics game. Two TVs just aren't enough!
Dr. Doubles, I presume.
Dr. Doubles it is!
It's ANOTHER start.
And we damn well better do something with this one!
wtf tek?
gumball rally?
Wow. That was pretty poor umpiring on that 'Tek AB.
Grand Gumball dong? Just get at least one, Jeffy.
Damn, gidp
I see run(s) !!!
For fuck's sake, can we please stop with the DPs?
.. and out(s).
JVE!
Shit, you're kidding me. A damn DP?
At least he didn't K.
Van Every squashes spiders.
Hey, an 0-2 single.
And the Van is up to a .333
FKR: 00

Any crashing meteorites in the forecast?
I like this Masterson kid. Our youngsters are quite impressive. Unlike those kids the Yankees had in their bullpen.
DP plz.
Good lord, Jeff Bailey is terrible.
Walking the #8 and #9 men ahead of Grady Sizemore is not a good idea.
Methinks Bat worried too much about Francisco.
And why?
He had a grand total of 4 steals last year
i'm yawning non-stop.
i need some greenies.
Ach, I should have kept my mouth shut.
Shit.
Asdrubal = at's trouble
FKR 1 - MFY 0.
Apparently Asdrubal means Baal's helper.
tribe time?
no, dong time!
Apparently Asdrubal means Baal's helper.
I think it's more like "Baal is helpful".
Please, do not whine Ortiz.
Eck is absolutely annihilating this ump. Hilarious.
I watched the first couple of innings on gameday and now watching some of these pitches. The zone seems rather arbitrary.
he's decided to call strikes on only the lowest third of the actual zone.
crotch or higher = ball.
Looks like the strikezone is just shifted over horizontally.
these clev guys are cheering more than i like to hear -- kinda hawk-lite.
I guess it depends on the name dictionary you find. I had no idea---I had never heard of the name before.
TEK!!
Anyone else here? Sooo quiet.
The Crazy Captain will bring it for a ride. Kick starting the fuck train.
Holy cow. Did I read that right?
I'm not clear on this cheese that eck keeps referring to. where does that phrase come from?
whatever it was, it was some high cheese.
Tek doubles and the pitcher hits the guy batting .111.
Crazy happenings
I'm ready to paint this town Green.
JVE again! Very cool.
Apparently 2d base isn't scoring position for Tek.
Cheese = heat
Van Every = Every day I hit the ball.
Green = money, we hope!
manning: "pavanao needs to get van every to hit into a double play -- and he will..."
wrong again, you smug asshole.
"High cheese" is a high strike in baseball terminology. Probably per:
cheese, n.2:
1. The right or correct thing: applied to anything good, first-rate in quality, genuine, pleasant, or advantageous.
1818 Lond. Guide (cited in Slang Dict. 1873). 1847 ALB. SMITH Man in Moon I. 201 Admired ‘Pets of the Ballet’..in a print-shop window. Thought them the cheese as works of art. c1850 THACKERAY Codlingsby iii, ‘You look like a Prince in it, Mr. Lint’..‘It is the cheese’, replied Mr. Lint.
Benjamin, you are a true scholar. :)
pavano now has to fight the fire.
I'm ready for some clutch J.D. hits.
I love me Drew hits.
Squander.
Green /= money :(
Feh.
- you look like a Prince
- it is the cheese
- you are high
- nay, good sir, again it is the cheese which be-eth high
- whatever, dude
Drew /= Fire :(
dear clev tv pbp guy:
the only people who refer to boston as "beantown" are tools and morons.
kind of you to look out for them, their being tools and morons and all.
Benjamin, you are a true scholar. :)
Thank you. :)
Mmm...hairy piece of cheese.... *chomp*
I have some hairy cheese in my fridge.
Piece of cheese with hair on it? GROSS
Pedroia smiling. Guess he is ok.
damn
Asdrubal Is-trouble
I like green, but he needs to learn to throw.
Arghhhhh.
OH NO!
shit. now what?
Can of corn??
Does Eck have an eating disorder or something?
c'mon Bat - nail it shut
now we come from behind.
SoSock, JVE ran right into the wall. He is ok, but it looked scary.
Oh, fuck. This is not good.
I'm mad now.....
Finally.
SCORE RUNS.
Can of corn??
Thanks for mentioning that. I forgot I put a bowl of corn chowder (chowdah?) in the m-wave a while back. Hope it's still hot.
And thanks for the pbp on Van Every.
I get none of that.
runs(slurp) please. (slurp)
Papi!
You're welcome, SoSock. Enjoy the chowdah!
Methinks we are squandering a tad too often in this game.
Tizzle has not shizzled too often lately and we really should capitalize when he does.
Rays with 2 in top 6th, lead 3-0
So do we want the Rays or Yankees to lose? Hard choice. Planning for the long run, perhaps the Rays are our bigger threat, and we want them to lose. But watching the Yankees lose is much more fun.
So do we want the Rays or Yankees to lose?
MFYs to lose. Always.
nice hustle, tek......
damn.
I was hoping to at least clear the bottom of the order.
nice hustle, tek......I assume you are being facetious?
big donkey out for the 7th, at 103 to start - jones warming
fck nuts - he would have been dead at 3b
Pitching change - YA THINK, TITO?
I know this is not a popular opinion of mine with L but here it goes.
I don't mind losing this game. If we win its a steal. We have two starters out, rookies in and a rookie pitcher. We can lose 62 games and have a legendary season. A loss here to Cleveland will not hurt us much.
F*ck me
Andy, you are truly a glass half full type, huh?
A and L with all their calling comebacks stuff would not say I am optimistic.
It's not 103 pitch count coming into the inning that bothered me. It's the fact that the 2, 3, & 4 spots had all hit solidly LAST time around. Should have never let them see him again.
That aid - I agree, one loss is just that. And we haven't actually lost ths one yet :)
well, laura is in new jersey and i think you're probably right. then, again, i just want to go to sleep asap. jere might fight ya, though.
I wasn't being facetious. I meant that you could see the silver lining in the clouds. I don't see that as pessimistic.
mmmm....typing not so hot tonight.
that Said, I meant.
sox making outs quickly ....
Fortunately Jere is at the game, so he can't yell at you.
Drew has apparently decided that since no one bothered to get him home after he led off the game with a hit, he's just not going to bother.
I want them to win this game, but someone just accepted our offer on a house, so I've got other things going on tonight.
Congrats, Benjamin! Where are you moving to and when? We just sold ours and moved last week, living in temporary housing until the new place is ready in the fall. Moving is more stressful than I expected (it had been 25 years).
Well since everyone that would fight me is gone, Let's lose this game. Keep this pitcher in for mop up and give the rest of the pen a night off.
I will still hope for a win. But not counting on it.
sometimes i act extra optimistic. not often, but sometimes. :>)
Lopez up...guess Tito has given up also, Andy.
tito agrees with andy
lopez up
Allan channeling me?
Ha!
I'm watching GDGD and chatting here on the laptop, while trying to get a couple of bills out on the desk unit.
Several times I've seen something happen here or went to make a comment and moved my mouse, then moved it again and wondered momentarily why the cursor wasn't budging on the laptop.
This newfound patience is new for me. I remember being a panicky patty early in 2007.
Wow, SoSock, one computer at a time is all I can handle.
I am a moron and stupid
Amy - moving after 25 years, and how many kids?
Must be tough. Lots of STUFF.
Andy, I think it's the JOS aura that makes some of us more patient and optimistic than we once we.
2 outs leave him in
the huntress needs to learn how to throw it to contact in these situations.
SoSock, two kids, both grown (28 and 24), but still LOTS of stuff. We threw away and gave away more than I thought we had, and we still had 40+ boxes of books and a truckload of other stuff. All in storage now.
Walking through our house for the very last time was very emotional.
I'm "working" on two computers right now as well -- desktop and laptop.
On the desktop I've been ripping CDs while doing this and preparing for my radio show on the laptop (to which I have to leave in a couple of minutes).
I've got a nice little program that allows me to use my keyboard/mouse on both computers. just slide off the screen and you're now controlling the other computer.
without 2004 and 2007, there would be an unbelievable amount of rage and bile here!
It's sort of amazing that we beat the Yankees five times and can't win tonight. Oh well.
nah - spiders > yankees.
Nick, I can only imagine the embarrassing mistakes I would make if I did that. As it is, I have sometimes posted a comment on one blog that was intended for another. Posting profanity with some acronym like LBJ or FY is certainly not expected on a law blog!
That's a big deal, Amy. Growing up, we moved a lot, so I never became too attached to a house, but I've now lived in my current place for 14 years. I can only imagine 25 and kids.
We dont have our best foot forward tonight.
The come backs in 04 and 07 really ruined all chances for pessimism. As long as any of those players are playing we can always come back.
NICE amy. very funny
It's just a local move within Providence, from a rental.
lol, amy. you should accidentally throw some of that lawstuffs our way.
gdgd says 56 degrees at game time -- too hot for bay to get comfortable.
Amy - I knew the kids were grown, just couldn't remember how many.
I also knew there would STILL be lots of stuff, maybe even more since they're grown. Things have a way of ending up at the folks' place sometimes :)
It had to be VERY emotional. I can't imagine. We came here 17 years ago with kids 10, 13, & 16, and that's hard enough to think about leaving. Can't imagine if they had spent their ENTIRE childhood here.
Good luck with the transaction, Benjamin. Good time to be a buyer!
lopez in - this inning could take awhile
alright, off to radioland. Goodnight all and, barring some astounding comeback, we'll just roll it til tomorrow.
Good time to be a buyer!
Amen to that!
Mozel Tov Ben.
SoSock, the kids came home about two weeks before we moved so that we could all be together in the house one last time together. It was so bittersweet. Lots of tears, lots of laughs.
And yes, we still have some of their stuff. Wedding gifts still hear from the older one, and the younger one will not let us throw away or give away much of anything from her childhood.
i hate lopez
Still HERE, not hear. Don't want Andy correcting my spelling again. :)
That didn't take long.
Good night, Nick. Have fun on the radio.
it's van every time .....
WTF? I guess no one wants to win this game.
Lopez really IS the new Timlin, isn't he?
Amy - bittersweet memories. I can relate, and they're really something to cherish. Smiling through tears.
Thanks, SoSock. I am sure you can. I hope you are doing okay.
doctor saving lopez's bacon
Just pathetic.
Oh well,
win some, lose some, some just suck.
And Amy's man starts the 8-run comeback!
gumball has lost its flavor
And the "just pathetic" comment referred to the game, not me. I'm doing OK, thank you.
Now they get hits?
Pinch-hitting for the only guy with multiple hits tonight?
Well, it is almost mother's day---perhaps another miracle?
Guess it panned out.
hits from tek and lugo?
anything is possible
And so it goes...
Good night, everyone. Here's to better luck tomorrow night.
Sounds like a DP comment there Amy.
GDGD hasn't caught up.
Agua limpia.
Manana .
Should be arriving late. My LL team has a game. But if the fields aren't any drier than they were tonight (we were supposed to practice) I'll be in.
MFYs lose 4-3 in the 10th.
MFYs are a sub-.500 team now (13-14). The schadenfreude tomorrow should take some of the sting out of tonight's Sox loss.
