G18: Red Sox 4, Yankees 1

Yankees - 001 000 000 - 1 7 2
Red Sox - 001 030 00x - 4 7 1
SWEEP!
The three-game sweep of the Yankees capped a 9-0 homestand -- and extended the Sox's winning streak to 10 games!

This game turned over the course of five pitches (with an intentional walk thrown into the mix) in the fifth inning. Boston had runners at first and second with two outs when David Ortiz doubled to the wall in left. Nick Green scored -- giving Boston a 2-1 lead -- and Jacoby Ellsbury went to third. Pettitte walked Kevin Youkilis intentionally to load the bases for J.D. Drew, who had struck out in his previous two at-bats.

Drew swung through the first pitch. Then, while Pettitte was getting ready to deliver, Ellsbury took off -- and stole home*!!! He was trying to run so fast, he stumbled at the very end and sort of fell/slid head first across the plate, but was in safely ahead of Jorge Posada's tag.

[* It was the first Red Sox steal of home since Jose Offerman on August 30, 1999, though that was part of a double steal. The last straight steal of home was by Billy Hatcher on April 22, 1994.]

Drew looked at another ball, then stroked a double to right, bringing in Ortiz. The Sox led 4-1 and the bullpen -- Hunter Jones, Michael Bowden and Takashi Saito -- shut the door.

Masterson was excellent: 5.1-6-1-1-4, 99.

***

Andy Pettitte (2.53, 193 ERA+) / Justin Masterson (3.18, 163 ERA+)

The last two games -- both played in 4:21 -- have not only been amazing Red Sox comebacks, they have also been crushing losses for the Yankees! Wonderful on every level.

The Red Sox's current nine-game winning streak is the best April stretch in team history. A win tonight would complete a perfect 9-0 homestand! It would also, providing Toronto loses to Chicago (2 PM), put us in first place.

Mike Bauman, MLB.com:
If the Red Sox continue to win games the way they won the past two, this season is eventually going to remind a lot of people of 2004 and '07.

Yes, it is extremely early for major pronouncements, but there is never an inappropriate time to turn seemingly certain defeat into extremely uplifting victory. And extremely early is a terrific time to prove to everybody that you are completely capable of this kind of transformation. ...

There is no need to exaggerate the importance of what the Red Sox were able to accomplish in their first two meetings with the Yankees this season. They performed the way that winning teams -- postseason teams -- perform: with resilience, persistence and determination.
Bryan Hoch, MLB.com:
The tight quarters of the visitors' clubhouse at Fenway Park have taken on a funereal pall after the first two games of the weekend, with Yankees players shuffling about silently and preparing to make their exit ... out the dank concrete corridors of the ancient ballpark.
Current Red Sox hitters have done extremely well against Horseface: .365/.425/.557/.982. Yankee hitters are 9-for-18 against Masterson, though no one has more than five plate appearances.

Masterson:
I feel more assured of myself and who I am, and I feel like I'm understanding my mechanics, like, what makes me good. I think I'm understanding that better. I'm not overthinking.
Gil Velazquez was told he'll likely be optioned to Pawtucket tonight, meaning Julio Lugo will rejoin the team in Cleveland. ... Record of the rivalry at Fenway: 446-446, with four ties.

Shithead.
I know, I have XM Radio, but I don't have the baseball broadcasts. I wish I did for these ESPN broadcasts. Morgan is such a boor.

Sounds like your car's brakes resemble the Yankees bullpen - worn and depleted! Whereas I'm quite proud of the 3 2/3 we got from the Sox 'pen, only one hit!

Good stuff, sleep time now - early work tomorrow but definitely looking forward to the smell of schadenfreude in the morning!

A little excited about a sweep 'eh?
It's April......
I think the Red Sox are on fire right now...no denying it....and I think they are gritty, and had solid wins this whole weekend....but please, talk to me when a sweep has implications like the 5 game Boston Massacre did back in August of '06. The Yanks are 3 games behind Boston......
Yes, there are no excuses....Mo blew one Friday, and A.J. did the same yesterday.....however, it's very early in the season, and I would say the Sox "stole" the series...rather then dominated it.

Nice sweep.....but again, it's not even May yet.

allan said...

....but please, talk to me when a sweep has implications like the 5 game Boston Massacre did back in August of '06.

That had implications? Really? What did the Yankees do in 2006?

I'll tell you: they got swept aside in the ALDS like so much dust on the floor by the Tigers!

***

And I'm so certain that if NY had destroyed Boston in this series, you'd be saying it doesn't mean anything because it's only April!!!

HAHAHAHHAAHHA - Pathetic.

tim said...

Thanks Allan - once I read that the "5 game massacre" in 2006 had huge implications, I was going to ask about that. But you've covered it nicely.

What a goof. I'd also like to point out that if the Yankees had swept, I think the last thing I would do is hunt down a Yankee blog and post a rant on it about how "Its only April" and try and make excuses. Clearly this person is lacking in the chromosome department, or maybe just a lack of social skills. Whatever. SWWEEEEEEP!

Habs AND Yankees in the same week - we shouldn't be so blessed! Loving the dirty water right now.

Anonymous said...

I wasn't dishing out insults.....there's no need to be so harsh and insulting. Lack of social skills? It's a blog...chill. Obviously I'm a little bitter, but I didn't "hunt down" a Red Sox blog. I actually read this blog regularly.....as in day-to-day. I find it entertaining, well written, and it covers the MLB aside from the Sox well.....which makes it even more so frustrating when the Yanks lose due to the joyous atmosphere....but what can I expect...it's a Sox blog.

As for 2006....I never mentioned anything about playoffs.....the implications from the 5 game sweep is that it knocked Boston out of the playoffs.....that one weekend destroyed the season for you....which is why I said it had huge implications.

Nevertheless....my team has some issues.....we need to get a bullpen together (something Cashman seem to forgot this offseason)...and we need a bench.....Boston played very well this weekend, and really have it going. I'm glad this weekend is over....it was highly frustrating for me, and I am hoping Detroit can bring us some wins.

Tim: Sporting Teams That Suck: 0-7 in April Against Sporting Teams from Boston That Are Awesome

allan said...

The 2006 Massacre was so bad, we came back and won the World Series the next year!

How about you get back to us when the Red Sox gak like the Yankees did in October 2004? It was only the worst (or should we call it the best?) choke job in baseball history. Now THAT was a series with implications!

(And even if a team lets another team go from 0-3 to 4-3 in some distant season, unless baseball goes to a best-of-9, no team can ever choke worse than the New York Yankees.)

But, yeah, you reminisce about August 18-21, 2006. Glory Days, indeed! ... Whatever gets you through the night.

Benjamin said...

Awesome shot of Drew's reaction on the LBJ steal (SoSH).

Anonymous said...

A Few Things....
a.) No need to get so harsh....and insulting...I didn't start calling people names, or citing "lack of chromosomes".....it's a blog, so social skills really don't count here...relax.
b.) I didn't "hunt down" a Red Sox blog.....I read this blog every day. I found it a few years ago....and as a Yankee fan, think it's funny...well-written, insightful, and a good source of info for the MLB, AL East, and especially Yanks/Sox battles. The fact that I read this daily makes it frustrating when I have to see all my NY headlines tomorrow that will surely read "Sweep Dreams"....or "April Boston Massacre"...etc. etc.

Obviously I am a little bitter. Childish to bring up '06....yes, I agree....but I wasn't talking about the playoffs....I was talking about the implications of that series, and how 1 weekend put the Sox out of the playoffs. That was the only point I was trying to make.

Yes, the Yanks got dominated by the Tigers (thanks Randy Johnson & ARod)....and yes, 2004 will forever be the worst choke job in history. Right now, my team is in trouble because we lack a bullpen, and a solid bench. Hopefully as the weeks go by our new aces settle into a groove, and our next visit to Fenway is a bit more successful.

As for this weekend. We choked yet again. Early in the season, but I'm nervous watching Boston right now as a Yanks fan. The fact that this is without Dice-K and an effective Papi is even more frightening.

Hopefully you can let this Yankee fan stick around and post comments. I'm not ignorant, nor' insulting, 'nor rude.

nixon33 said...

CANT WAIT TO SEE THE BACK PAGES TOMORROW!
MMWWWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

allan said...

You are welcome to post, but please do not tell anyone to "relax" or "chill". I find that offensive.

And social skills do count.

nixon33 said...

DONT TASE ME, BRO!

In all seriousness, Jonny Miller sounded like he was going to piss himelf when Dreamboat stole home. TOO FUNNY.
Bad job by ESPN not showing us a replay until 10 minutes later.

allan said...

That series in no way "knocked Boston out of the playoffs".

After the five-game sweep, the Red Sox were 4 GB the White Sox in the wild card race -- with 37 games to go.

Both clubs went 17-20 the rest of the way. And it was the nearly one injury per day during that entire month of August that did the actual damage.

(By the way, in mid-September that year, Boston took 3 of 4 from the Yankees in New York.)

nixon33 said...

SWEEEEEP! Wake Goes Later Today For 11 In A Row!

laura k said...

"it's a blog, so social skills really don't count here."

THE FUCK THEY DON'T.

They sure as hell do and if you can't use yours (or you don't have any), you're not welcome here. Buh-bye.

Anonymous said...

L-Girl....I don't even get how I had poor social skills? What did I even say?

Anyway...tonight will be a true test for Sabathia....if he can't go 8 innings, I don't want to hear that "he's getting acclimated to a new team." He's had 4 games already.

NY papers are destroying the Yankees bullpen, Angel Berroa, and now Johnny Damon may even be injured....not good.

laura k said...

Mattaroni22, I was only responding to your claim that since it's a blog, social skills don't count.

On many or most blogs, social skills most certainly do count. This is not a chat room or an open forum where people scream at each other and trade insults. We treat each other with respect, when we disagree we don't attack each other personally, and generally are supportive and friendly to everyone but trolls.

We save the insults for players, managers, umps and broadcasters!

My reaction was sharp because people often confuse blogs with chat rooms and act like "anything goes" here. It's not the case.

laura k said...

It's also pretty common for Yankee fans to show up here (usually after a Yankee win or some awful Sox loss to any team) to taunt and generally act like idiots.

I don't get it. Like Tim said, the Red Sox just swept the Yanks, but I can't imagine going to Yankee blogs to gloat.

But one thing about posting around here: you'll want to check your facts first.

laura k said...

"NY papers are destroying the Yankees bullpen,"

Wouldn't you?

"Johnny Damon may even be injured....not good."

Thing is, most people here disagree.

So if you post stuff from a Yankee-fan POV, you're asking for trouble. As Allan said, you're welcome to post here if you're civil, but you may not like the reaction, or lack of it.

Anonymous said...

Fair enough...this will be a rough transition, but again...I will never just come here to gloat. I am realistic, and I do read the blog daily....I'm not just out here looking to pick fights with Red Sox fans. 'Nor will I taunt.

I am still debating however the more frustrating loss of this weekend. While Friday night was more shocking, than upsetting (more so because Mo has started 2009 looking rather lights-out)...Saturday was tough to swallow. I dvr'd the game, and got home an hour and a half into it.....had the homerun been hit by Bay, Youk, Pedroia, or Ortiz...I wouldn't have been shocked. The fact that Burnett gave it up to Varitek added to the frustration, mainly because of 'Tek's lack of offense to start the season. After that homerun, A.J. became a complete mess, and self-destructed.
