G27: Red Sox 7, Yankees 3

Red Sox - 400 000 021 - 7 8 1
Yankees - 003 000 000 - 3 10 1
The first five Red Sox batters hit safely against Chamberlain -- Ellsbury single (and stolen base), Pedroia single, Ortiz RBI single, Bay 3-run home run, Lowell single -- before Joba (5.2-6-4-2-12, 108) settled down.

Beckett (6-10-3-1-5, 108), Okajima (6 batters, 6 outs) and Saito (a perfect ninth) made sure those four runs were enough on a rainy night in the Bronx.

Chamberlain benefited from a very wide strike zone and became only the fifth pitcher since 1900 to strike out at least 12 batters in 5.2 or fewer innings. Nine of his 12 strikeouts were on called strike threes.

In the fifth, at the same time he was dispalying such finesse, Joba drilled Bay in the back. It was obvious retaliation for Bay's first-inning dong, but the umpires did nothing. Beckett chose not to seek revenge tonight.

The Red Sox have won their first five games of the 2009 season against the Yankees. The only other seasons in which that has happened? 1912 and 1985.

In 1912, the Red Sox went 19-2 against the Yankees, winning their first 14 games against New York, including four victories in three days in mid-June by scores of 15-8, 11-3, 13-2 and 10-3. In 1985, Boston won the first five meetings, then dropped the remaining eight.

The Red Sox and Yankees will meet again at Fenway Park on June 9-10-11. The next series at Yankee Stadium is scheduled for August 6-7-8-9.

***

Josh Beckett (7.22, 70 ERA+) / Joba Chamberlain (3.13, 103 ERA+)

Beckett's last two starts have been crummy: 9.2 innings, 20 hits, 15 runs, 7 walks, 11 strikeouts, 13.97 ERA. Only Chien-Ming Wang would be pleased (giddy, even) at that level of performance [sic].

His season BABIP is .338, so there he's had some bad luck here and there. Mostly, though, he needs to start pitching again. Maybe tonight's match-up will inspire him.

s'ok. 6-3.

Ish said...

Very ok.

SoSock said...

We'll take the insurance run(s)

SoSock said...

Jeemer for 8th?

Ish said...

Can we drill a guy now? I mean, I won't be too disappointed if it doesn't happen but I'm still pissed at Joba throwing at Bay.

Ish said...

Jere here ya go...

BOS - 6 runs 8 hits
MFY - 3 runs 10 hits

Ish said...

Jeemer still in there.

redsock said...

we'll drill em in june if need be.

andy said...

Wait, who are we drilling? and why?

Kevin said...

Three-run lead in the 8th with Oki on the mound and Jones, Saito, Ram-Ram, MDC, and Bot available in the pen.

I like our chances.

Technically WF 2.0 is there too, but there's no reason to count him.

SoSock said...

I vote for getting thru the 8th unscathed, then drilling someone with 1 out in the 9th.

redsock said...

i'm surprised any mfy fans are there. i figured it would be 100% sox fans (and spike).

Ish said...

Plus get one of our 90+ guys in there, like MDC.

Amy said...

Eck, we have not won yet. Don't jinx it.

Kevin said...

Sit

Gambrinus said...

I know I was watching last night's game, and saw Jeter, Damon, and Teixeira come up in the same inning, and realized I was rooting more for them getting drilled than, y'know, actual baseball. This is probably a sickness.

Kevin said...

Sit

dud's comedic value is off the charts.

SoSock said...

(backwards)K for the Dud

Ish said...

There's NOBODY THEREEEEE.

SoSock said...

For all that vaunted payroll you'd think they would have a relief pitcher we've at least heard of!

redsock said...

let's add 8.

Ish said...

It's like middle relief isn't important or anything. Nah you don't need it. Just use the farm.

redsock said...

FY on base 4 times (it's like every day right?)

Grant Salzano said...

That appears to have been a fantastic AB by FY

Ish said...

Have a good rest of the game, everyone. I have to go out and pick my sister up at a bus stop. Grumble grumble grumble.

SoSock said...

Nice AB.
Papai - Be Papi. The old Papi that is.

andy said...

Do we just want a yankee to get hit on principal?

redsock said...

no, eck, nyy are NOT going to be there.

Jere said...

Allan, Kim says when we were in Toronto, we saw black squirrels. I have no recollec of this. Can you verify black squirrels in Tor area?

Amy said...

bb bb

nick said...

Thos attendance numbers are as accurate as fox reporting on, well, any rally be it anti-war or teabaggers.

redsock said...

Tala says LOTS of black squirrels.

Gambrinus said...

I've seen black squirrels in colorado. They're usually up in the mountains.

redsock said...

fruitbat better get up.

Amy said...

Does this guy know there is a strike zone?

We have black squirrels here in western MA. Very pretty, for a squirrel.

Grant Salzano said...

Wow this pitcher sucks...

Jere said...

thanks for the squirrel updates.

squirrels on the pond.

redsock said...

yeah, this is a playoff roster/bullpen
:>)

Patrick said...

I don't want to hear joe say the word 'squander' ever again, Lowell. Please work your magic.

nick said...

if the park is that empty, why don't more folks move forward -- water? or is the security still determined to keep people in their sections?

Jere said...

Wow, I guess I have lived my whole life on the periphery of the black squirrel zone.

Grant Salzano said...

Walk 4 straight...PLEASE...that will be awesome...

A Conformer said...

Wow. 22 pitches, 14 balls, 3 bbs, no outs for Melancon thus far.

Amy said...

Is the strike zone that much bigger in the minors? :)

SoSock said...

BBs :)

Jere said...

And Girardi puts up both arms to call for "whoever's out there".

redsock said...

on pace for 8!

redsock said...

7th ny pitcher!!!!!!!

Amy said...

A strike?

redsock said...

worse tyhan a lot of the balls earliert.

A Conformer said...

The mid-AB pitching change... gotta be pretty humiliating.

Patrick said...

These Yankees, they suck.

SoSock said...

We have nothing but the classic grays and a few flying squirrels around here, but where we used to camp up in the Mt. Pisgah area there were these very small reddish striped squirrels that were very friendly.
I've never seen the black squirrels either.

redsock said...

at least there wasn't a lot of fans to boo him

redsock said...

CI penciled in to be Mr.27

Grant Salzano said...

Cmonnnnn walk him in...

A Conformer said...

Hey, I was just in Mt. Pisgah this weekend. Beautiful area.

Jere said...

gotta know yr outfielder

Patrick said...

Bailey the unlikely hero (of the 9th inning)?

Grant Salzano said...

That sauce? Weak.

Kevin said...

If we manage to not score here...

Grant Salzano said...

This is pretty comical...

Grant Salzano said...

If Bailey swings I'm going to kick him in the cunt.

redsock said...

Gum Ball Walking.

Jere said...

7-3

Grant Salzano said...

See? He listens.

Kevin said...

RBBI for BBailey

Gambrinus said...

I'll take that.

A Conformer said...

Robertson doing his best Melancon impersonation. And now it's bases loaded Tek again.

Kevin said...

"If Bailey swings I'm going to kick him in the cunt."

So you're going to kick him in the Joba?

Amy said...

Another GS chance for Tek

Amy said...

But..no. Another wimpy grounder.

redsock said...

1 run
0 hits
3 left

Grant Salzano said...

So you're going to kick him in the Joba?

Zing :-P

A Conformer said...

I'm gonna guess Saito for the 9th.

SoSock said...

Mt. Pisgah - there's a beatiful park inn type place right on the BR Parkway that looks out on the mountain.

We could never afford to stay there but we stayed at the campground right across the street and hiked out to the overlooks and such.
It most certainly IS a beautiful area.

As a Yankee fan, I will be very happy to not see the Red Sox for a little.....it has been beyond frustrating these first 5 games.....it seems like all is better when we don't have to play you guys....hopefully Tampa doesn't continue the pounding tomorrow....gonna get my first look at the new Yankee Stadium....would love to see a win....

Grant Salzano said...

Trying to jinx us, eh? :-P

Amy said...

Mattaroni, you are brave to come to a Red Sox blog tonight.

Jere said...

good job Saito

redsock said...

gotta respect a nyy fan who ventures in at this point...

Patrick said...

I wouldn't mind the yankees beating up on Tampa Bay.

Amy said...

Yes, but we can be gracious in victory.

Hope you enjoy the trip to the new stadium, though I know two Yankee fans who have been there who are disappointed.

redsock said...

sneaky cheese

Grant Salzano said...

I wouldn't mind the yankees beating up on Tampa Bay.

I'm sorry, what?

Kevin said...

Sit

Amy said...

Yes! We have dirty water in the toilet!

Jere said...

"I wouldn't mind the yankees beating up on Tampa Bay.

I'm sorry, what?"

That's what I'm sayin'. I wouldn't so much "mind" as I would "puke blood."

mattaroni22 said...

There are no excuses....the bottom line is this...and I told other Yankees fans in the office tonight....if the Sox were down 6-4 in Fenway, bottom of the 9th, and the first two men got on base, with the top of their lineup up....they would have found a way to win.....Damon, Texiera, Cano...none of them could muster a hit, and that has gotta change if we have any shot of staying in the playoff race as either an AL East contender or Wild Card contender. This is the 2nd time the Sox have ruined a good streak we have had going.....besides that loss to the Angels, we have been rolling pretty well since our last Sox beating....we will have to start with Tampa tomorrow

Kevin said...

FILTHY TOILET WATER!!!

SoSock said...

GOD - please let it be Jeter that ends this game.

Pleeeeeeeze!

Benjamin said...

Jere said...

(can I just say how much I freakin' hate these bobblehead lottery ads -- gag!)

g'night!

Amy said...

Mattaroni, I hope you beat each other up and then both teams go on to lose against subsequent teams. :)

Amy said...

OK, time for sleep.

See you all another night.

A Conformer said...

G'night, all.

SoSock said...

Later all!

A good night. A good sweep = a good sleep.

Love it!
