G39: Red Sox 2, Blue Jays 1

Blue Jays - 000 010 000 - 1 5 1
Red Sox - 020 000 00x - 2 6 1
Wakefield was strong (8-5-1-2-3, 97), making a two-run second inning stand up against the AL East leaders. Boston is now 2.5 GB. (The Yankee beat Baltimore 9-1, so they are 3.5 GB.)

Mike Lowell started the second inning with a single to left and J.D Drew worked an eight-pitch walk. After Julio Lugo popped out, Jeff Bailey singled to left center. Lowell scored on the hit, Drew went to third, and Gumball took second on Adam Lind's throwing error. George Kottaras then lofted a sac fly to left.

Cabin Mirror opened the top of the fifth with a dong to left, but that was Toronto's only run. Only two other Blue Jay runners reached second base.

The Fenway crowd was solidly behind David Ortiz, but Flo went 0-for-3, walking in the first, but then: K, 4-3, K. Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a fifth-inning single; he also doubled in the eighth.

David Ortiz (.208/.318/.300) is expected to be back in the Red Sox lineup tonight. Will he batting in his customary third spot in the order?

Terry Francona:
I don't know. I want to talk to him. And I haven't wanted to talk to him yet, because I've wanted to give him some room.
SoSHer Carl Everetts Therapist relayed some information "from someone who interviewed [Vice President of Player Personnel] Ben Cherington" last Friday morning:
Papi's struggles are a combination of mental physical and emotional. He also has been withdrawn and silent in the clubhouse. ... There will be a closed door meeting ASAP that includes Magaden, Tito, Theo, Henry and the training staff. A decision will be made as far as how to approach this thing ...

Suggestions have been made about possible options that include ... Moving Ortiz down in the order ...
SoSHer normstalls:
For what its worth (and maybe not much) Ortiz looked really good during BP on Saturday. He hit a groove and was really driving some balls well. I think he hit about 5 out. Now this was only BP and normally is nothing to be encouraged about, but given his current condition I took it as a glimmer of hope.
John Hickey, MLB.com:
Hitting coach Dave Magadan said Ortiz's mechanics are back where they are supposed to be, so all the slugger needs now is to regain his confidence.
Wily Mo Pena, currently with the Buffalo Bisons, on not hitting home runs in 2006:
[Bronson] Arroyo had two [with the Reds] and I had nothing. [Fans] were jumping all over me every time I came to the plate. I was thinking too much, but once I hit that first one, I was able to breathe and starting hitting. That's going to be the same for Ortiz. ...

He's not swinging the same. I don't know if he's hurt, or if something is bothering him, or if he's thinking about something. I wish I could know something.
Julio Lugo is also expected back in the lineup.

I'll be wearing my red Godpapi shirt tonight, because David Ortiz has taught me that no matter how hopeless the situation may seem, no matter how silly you might think you appear to others, no - matter - what, you ALWAYS believe.

And I believe that Flo will bring Good Times!

I was watching the 2007 Red Sox season in review on NESN at the gym this afternoon. There were many parts where I was listening to some good music, watching the video and found myself on the elliptical doing the equivalent of sprinting.

It was amazing watching and remembering the feelings, like the green uniforms night against the Yankees with Coco's double and Jeemer's first save, then the four dongs night. The night where everyone was watching the Orioles/Yankees game hoping for some late bird magic and some celebration. I got a good workout from watching that video!

I've been chirped enough thus far by fuckin' Jays fans. Time for some Sox wins to put them in their place.

I do keep reminding them that in addition to it being May with the Jays in first, so are the Rangers - and KC is currently in second.

Regression will occur. Starting in about 50 min.

Also from Extra Bases: The Blue Jays have "played 15 of their 41 games against teams that currently have a winning record. (They've gone 8-7.) They played three against the Yankees last week, losing two."

The fuckin' free ride in the East is over.

redsock said...

PawSox played this afternoon: Yook went 0-for-4 and Clay Buchholz went 4.1-7-3-2-5.

Amy said...

Hi, everyone. Believe it or not, Harvey is at Fenway while I sit at home. He is with his colleagues from work. I am envious! But not resenting his good time...as long as he roots for the Sox tonight.

Amy said...

That dead blue jay photo makes me sad, even though I agree with your message.

Ish said...

Don and Eck tonight.

redsock said...

i also had a pic of a cat with a blue jay in its mouth. should i have gone with that one?

redsock said...

OMG --- we could not find Buffyvision, so we decided to start looking at channel 1 and flip through them all ...

-- AND THERE IS NESN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A free preview of TSN2?!?!?

Amy said...

Yeah, at least then I could have said it was just the natural course of events. Your bird looks like it was diseased. That virus the name of which is escaping me right now that killed all those crows and jays.

redsock said...

NESN is on Channel 1, is what I'm saying.

Amy said...

NESN on Channel 51 here... :)

Amy said...

West Nile. Thank you, Google.

Edward Lee said...

75 mph fastball for the K, sweet.

L-girl said...

Lucky Harvey!

"i also had a pic of a cat with a blue jay in its mouth. should i have gone with that one?"

That's for when the Tigers play the Jays.

Amy said...

Harvey in the grandstand on the first base side.

He would not commit to rooting for the Sox, but did say maybe. After all, right now shouldn't a Yankee fan also be rooting against the Jays? Hmm, guess not.

Amy said...

Got him!

L-girl said...

Strong Cdn arm there!

redsock said...

"God" caught stealing........

Amy said...

How did they still get him? Too bad.

Amy said...

Aw, he WAS safe!

Edward Lee said...

They didn't get him.

Ish said...

Interesting that you don't get TSN2 anyway.

Amy said...

I am hoping good things for Papi. Nice to hear cheers and not boos.

redsock said...

nesn fucks up, holds the lineup until 2 are out, so we miss the nice hand for tiz because the lineup graphic is on the screen.

Amy said...

Watching Papi at the bat reminds me of watching my kids in play...I am so nervous for him.

andy said...

He is watching his own fouls. He is in bad shape mentally.

L-girl said...

Forget TSN2, we don't get TSN regular! We downgraded to basic cable a while back, don't have lots of extra stations now.

tim said...

I thought TSN2 was a standard channel now if you get TSN. Anyway in class and watching slingbox (direct NESN feed)

Amy said...

A walk is a start.

andy said...

Edward Lee said...

Dammit, he had that 2-1 "fastball" squared up and just missed it.

andy said...

Does home count as a base in the TB stat?

Amy said...

Still in class, Tim? Or is this summer school?

andy said...

Can't blame him for that.

redsock said...

only when you get 4 on a dong.

tim said...

Fresh semester Amy - third week of classes. 3 hours of tax is NOT fun, especially with this prof...I missed last week's though, to watch game 6.

redsock said...

nesn missed that 1st pitch to wells?

L-girl said...

"I thought TSN2 was a standard channel now if you get TSN"

It might be but we don't get TSN anymore.

Amy said...

Tax...yeah, not my favorite subject either. Good luck with that.

Amy said...

I wonder how different Canadian tax laws are from US tax laws. Perhaps fewer loopholes and less convoluted? Or is it just as bad?

L-girl said...

I MISS REMY

andy said...

Eck is a god so Remy should take his time healing.

L-girl said...

Here's one difference I know about. Corporations pay taxes here.

L-girl said...

Eck is hideous.

Zenslinger said...

A-Rod 2-R HR donger.

Goddam. Damon was on. He's been hitting very well, too.

Amy said...

Heh, good one, Laura. Corporations are SUPPOSED to pay taxes here, but then...loopholes and convoluted rules that corporate lawyers can work around...

Amy said...

Doctor!

Amy said...

Jed Lowrie...I actually forgot about him.

andy said...

Is that guy on NESN checking out Heidi's ass?

Amy said...

SHOW THE GAME

L-girl said...

All those corporations from the Cayman Islands and Delaware aren't supposed to pay taxes. There's a whole nation's worth of health care, right there.

Other than that, the only thing I know about Cdn vs US taxes is that there's a myth in the US that Canadians pay way more taxes than they really do.

andy said...

Jed was masturbating all week.

tim said...

I don't mind it, since I've done a shitload of personal returns.

Definitely different tax laws between Canada and the US. I'm pissed that I had to buy the books for this class for $180 and since they're updating the tax act, going to have to buy it again in September when I'm taking corporate tax. This one is personal.

L-girl said...

Nice to Lowrie! Jed, we miss you!!!

L-girl said...

[Nice to ^see^ Lowrie, that is.]

L-girl said...

Andy, you have video?

andy said...

Keep your mitts off my man L.

andy said...

Yeah we switched off on camera duties.

Amy said...

I'd gladly pay more in taxes for universal health care, but it's never going to happen here.

andy said...

If lugo can hit above 300 this year I will forgive him all his transgressions.

L-girl said...

Don't worry, Andy, I'll just watch.

Amy said...

"JD Drew's pants could be ON FIRE and he would not get upset." LOL

andy said...

Yeah the money it would take to give universal health care from what I have seen pales in comparison to the amounts they are giving the banks. Our priorities are fucked. I guess with less poor people, because they died without health care, there will be less crime and less social programs. Makes sense in a big picture way but come the fuck on.

andy said...

Agreed L. You can just sit a corner in the shadows.

L-girl said...

And you shouldn't even have to pay more. Reduce military spending by 75% and you're there.

My taxes didn't go up when we moved here.

andy said...

Lugo will not be forgiven is my prediction.

Amy said...

No question that our priorities are fucked up here. All that money on war and weapons...

andy said...

Why can't the media chase the suck asses out of town?

L-girl said...

right on andy, you got it

Amy said...

Does Canada have a graduated income tax? I assume it is not a flat rate.

L-girl said...

War, weapons and PROFIT on both. Fortunes have been made off Iraq, billions of it.

L-girl said...

graduated, yes

redsock said...

halladay is the best pitcher in baseball? has eck taken up smoking crack? god, what a dummy.

Amy said...

YAY! We score! Bailey!

L-girl said...

Gummi Jeff!!!

andy said...

Don't get me wrong I love me a good war movie and playing with military toys is a lotta fun. Right now there are problems that a little military loving care would wipe out down around our mexican border. I guess our own borders are not worth protecting and I am not talking about immigration. I'm talking about the privately funded mexican mafia gangs and their activities. But no it's more important to be everywhere else.

redsock said...

RBI for Gummy Bail.

tim said...

Top rate is about 50%

andy said...

This greek guy is pretty...that is all.

Amy said...

I am sure there are studies that show how it is that Canada can raise enough revenue for the services the government provides without having higher taxes than the US. And I bet it does have to do with the differences in military spending and the (I assume) more equitable system for collecting taxes. Fewer loopholes and all that.

L-girl said...

Amy, on our tax returns, Ontario calculates a premium for our health care based on our income. Under a certain amount (I think it's 20K, not sure - I'm sure Tim knows), you don't pay.

If you earn about 50K, it's $1200 for the year.

Ish said...

Also be nice for there to be a little more money for education! Not that it's important or anything. Why should we have to be spending $100,000 to get a college education again?

andy said...

whoa 50% for taxes? Is that right? That's high right? I have no clue how much I really lose to pay for the people to make me wait for 2 hours at the department of motor vehicles. Oh I also pay the salary of the cop who gave me a ticket for driving through a brand new stop sign that I paid for as well. The cure for taxes is to make more money.

L-girl said...

Tim, but the myth in the US is that everyone in Cda pays 50% tax. What % of people pay that?

Amy said...

2-0!

L-girl said...

SAFE! 2-0 and Gummi on 2nd!

Zenslinger said...

halladay is the best pitcher in baseball? has eck taken up smoking crack? god, what a dummy.Isn't he a reasonable choice?

andy said...

I am sure that not everyone pays that much. I guess if I made 2 mil a year that giving up 1 mil would not hurt so much.

L-girl said...

Andy, ordinary people in Cda do NOT pay 50% taxes. Our taxes are no higher here than they were in NY.

andy said...

1200 a year for medical care is outstanding. I wish. I would pay that now. I would pay 2400.

tim said...

Its over 130 or 140 k/year thats about 50% - at least in Ontario. I don't know much about the other provinces though.

And yeah, Ontario health care premium starts at 20 to 30k income.

Zenslinger said...

Yeah, more scoring!

LBJ RBI plz.

Amy said...

I read an article last week about Norway (I think it was Norway) where the tax rate is over 60%, but the services are incredible and people are not complaining. Some of it is what a society is used to. It was an interesting article tracing Norwegian cooperative attitudes back to the days when they needed to cooperate for access and control of water.

andy said...

Halladay is in the running for this year. Grienke gets my vote. I hope he pitches a perfect game against the yankees.

andy said...

Wait if I make 140 a year I get 70 grand taken out for taxes? see that stings some.

Zenslinger said...

Remember that when you move into a higher bracket, you only pay the higher amount on that money. It's not 50% across the board.

tim said...

The lowest rate is 16 or 17% - if you make more than 10k but less than like 35k.

Amy said...

I would pay $1200 to get veterinary care, let alone human health care!

L-girl said...

Norwegians were a big force in the socialist movement in the US, long ago. It's a very cooperative society.

Edward Lee said...

Also be nice for there to be a little more money for education! Not that it's important or anything. Why should we have to be spending $100,000 to get a college education again?1. Because that's what the market is willing to pay.

2. The market is incredibly irrational on this point.

L-girl said...

"1. Because that's what the market is willing to pay."

No, because that's what a small percentage of the population is *able* to pay.

"The market" shouldn't be a factor when it comes to education.

L-girl said...

Andy, you don't. See Zen's comment.

redsock said...

he's very good, but it sounded like eck was saying, he was the best right now - and that is just not the case. he is not in the top 10 in mlb era+.

i also liked how eck was talking about a pitcher called "ray" that toronto has -- how no one knew who this guy was, only calling him "ray" -- is that his first name, his last name, his only name, like prince? "ray"

(it's robert ray, dennis.)

Edward Lee said...

L, my second point is far more important.

L-girl said...

EL, the market is incredibly irrational, period.

andy said...

Ok eck trashed Millar for the playoff first pitch. He was not under contract with Balitmore anymore cunt. Their season was over.

L-girl said...

OMG Eck is so stupid.

Amy said...

So why aren't there more catching prospects? These guys have no useful insights.

andy said...

Got it L and zen. Yeah education has become an elitist thing and it shouldn't be. We are on country with a common goal, or we should be. We(america in general) would sell our first born to make a good profit if we could. All that individual liberty far right wacko talk was fine a good in areas where we are not living on top of each other. We just need to get along and take care of our own. Well all those right wingers are cool with dumping all that money into a different country who now has demanded we leave. Hmmm, do we get any of that country building money back? Sure the corporations over there do.

andy said...

Eck still a god.

andy said...

Eck pays 75% in taxes.

andy said...

He just talks too much. He should let Don do the talkin more.

Amy said...

I don't think we have ever really been one country with one common goal. But it's a nice ideal.

Amy said...

SHOW THE GAME

Zenslinger said...

Education is expensive. It became a common "statistic" to throw around that it cost the same to have someone in prison for a year as it did to educate them at Harvard. But that's because your average elite, private college (what do they run, $35k now? and, yes, that was a bit of oxymoron there) pays for half of expenditures out of the endowment, etc.

It makes me choke when students complain about paying $20/credit as City College here in San Francisco, or when they don't buy their goddam books. I understand these expenses can be a lot for some folks, and we're here to serve them, but there isn't much understanding of what it actually costs to educate people.

Amy said...

Oh, Papi...

redsock said...

ugly AB

L-girl said...

Is there any evidence catching used to be so great and now sucks? And when was this golden era of catching? Isn't it all cyclical? No reason to believe a word these guys say.

L-girl said...

Zen, you're right. But when education is so out of reach for the majority of people - but it's necessary for any kind of advancement - and the only education many people can afford is through the military (hmmm...) - something is really off.

Amy said...

Zen, private colleges are now about $45K a year.

BAY!

The odd thing about college tuition that often gets lost is that 1)about half the students don't pay the full freight; much is discounted as scholarships, and 2)a lot of those increases are paying for things that students demand at colleges now: better food, fancy fitness centers, nicer dorms, etc.

redsock said...

eck with the "if that fly ball had been a homer" it would have changed the game. well, no shit, eck.

if half the sox fly outs had gone over the fence, they would have won the game 83-3.

the analysis of an 8 year old.

L-girl said...

Hey, it's the ShamWow guy. What was he busted for recently? I was trying to tell Allan but I can't remember.

Benjamin said...

and 3) research-oriented universities hardly pretend their mission is to teach students anymore, and fund accordingly.

redsock said...

is nesn fucking up or it canada based? we comeback from commercial and wells is standing on first ......

Benjamin said...

For busting a prostitute in the face.

L-girl said...

My grad school will cost about $8/yr. The dean I met with has a daughter in the same program in Boston, she's paying $24K a year. I have no idea why that is.

L-girl said...

Thanks, Benjamin.

andy said...

I saw how wells got on and this was on NESN on EI

L-girl said...

Not $8/yr, $8K/yr! It's not THAT cheap here! :)

Edward Lee said...

Having attended and taught at both private and public institutions, I'm pretty confident when I say that private universities are a waste of money (education-wise) for about 99.9% of students.

UNC is a world-class institution, and it charges in-state undergrads something like $6,000/yr for tuition. Unless North Carolina's state taxes are especially onerous, there's no reason every state can't eventually be like this.

andy said...

Zen I graduated from Cal Maritime in Vallejo. They did an all school assembly one time to show us how half or more of the cost of our education was paid by not us.

I think what they do with a lot of catchers, that can hit and hit well, they move them to 1st or 3rd or outfield, catchers take a beating. That's why Mauer will get a boatload of money, he can hit and catch a very odd combo at this point in baseball..

Amy said...

I think, Edward, that that is largely true, but not for everyone. Some students can do well at large universities with large classes; other students need the smaller environment that they can get at a small college.

I do believe, however, that anyone can get a top notch education anywhere if they take advantage of what is there. OTOH, anyone can waste four years at any school if they just sit back and party.

andy said...

I kick myself every game I watch. I used to be a real good catcher up through HS then quit because I hated my step dad who made me play catcher. I could hit too. I will not allow that to happen to my new son, when he arrives. If he is a boy. Better be for this plan to work. Another girl would be awesome too. But I wouldn't want her to have softball thighs.

L-girl said...

EL, very interesting perspective.

A huge part of the problem is seeing education as another profitable item to be consumed by a consumer culture. Certain things have to be removed from the market IMO - health care, education, clean water, basic fuel - in order to have a strong and healthy society.

L-girl said...

"gets the bad news" - DRINK!

andy said...

I always get a kick out of the clerical ladies that I work with. They are middle aged and party like college kids. I did that for a year or two in college and was over it. I think that is better to get over it sooner.

Amy said...

Andy, I take it that is your way of saying that your wife is pregnant?? Congrats, and I hope she is feeling well.

I used to catch when I played softly. But mostly because I thought it required less running than the other positions. I was awful.

L-girl said...

Andy, are you expecting a new baby??? That's awesome.

L-girl said...

I was briefly a catcher too! For the same reasons as Amy and I was awful. Much safer for me to hide in RF.

andy said...

Yeah I broke the news a few games back but it was missed. Yeah she is due Nov 10. That's 11/10/09. C-section so we will schedule for that day for awesomeness.

I always wonder why MLB has such a hard time getting the inner city youth to play baseball. The sport gives you the best opportunity to make money if you specialize in the right thing. Be left handed and pitch or catch and hit and you will make money.

Amy said...

That's hysterical, Laura! My daughter used to play right field and sit down on the grass and talk to her friend, the center fielder. Her coach was not amused.

Some of us just know our limits!

That day is my favourite nephew's birthday. Will you know the gender in advance?

L-girl said...

Amy said...

No space for ballfields in the inner city, Andy? Too much expensive equipment needed, unlike basketball?

redsock said...

what is that? "go bridge"?

are we gonna hear that 38,956 times this series?

L-girl said...

Andy, not a lot of good ball fields in inner cities.

Amy said...

Not a bad inning, aside from Millar.

Edward Lee said...

L, I agree that education needs to be publicly funded up to some level, but I have no idea how you can remove the "profit motive" from education entirely. Teachers like to make money too.

Another big part of the problem with education in the USA today is the decline in standards -- kids today need to go to college to learn stuff that they would have learned in high school 50 years ago.

L-girl said...

SHOW THE GAME

andy said...

We will definitely know the sex soon. Gotta plan.

I guess the cost thing does exclude the inner city but what is the reason that the poorer then poor currently dominate much of baseball? I am talking about the islanders of course. They played with sticks and rocks. Look at Vlad he hits like he is playing in a field of dirt clods.

Amy said...

More land available on the islands and better weather than in most US cities.

L-girl said...

That's my boy!!!

L-girl said...

It also can be a cultural priority. The reason a sport is more or less popular may not be rational.

andy said...

Good point on the education of past Ed. There are standards but there ate far too many and varied standards. It is so regimented and geared to the tests. Not a lot of reaching kids anymore, it's more of a process or an assembly line. Enrichment is not a big deal anymore. Teach the test. Test scores. That's all that matters now. Where I am at least in California.

redsock said...

it's dong time.

Amy said...

It's everywhere, Andy. Thanks in large part to No CHild Left Behind. What a misnomer that is. Like Newspeak.

L-girl said...

EL, I'm not suggesting teachers (or anyone else!) work for free! I think teachers should be paid a lot better than they are. That has nothing to do with privatizing education.

Amy said...

Hope so, Allan. I want a Papi dong.

andy said...

Yeah I see that Laura. Well if i have a boy ever he will either be a lefty pitcher or a hitting catcher. I can teach mechanics of both. Kinda I am right handed. I always loved pitching. I actually throw a side session during most games in my house with wiffle balls. I have a stroke zone marked on the wall across the house. I am always experimenting with different deliveries.

redsock said...

can't remy call games via phone from his house?

and eck can go bridge (jump off one).

Amy said...

Uch. Another dribbling grounder.

L-girl said...

"Teach the test. Test scores. That's all that matters now. Where I am at least in California."

And the other 49 states. If they want federal funding, that's what they have to do, as Amy said.

L-girl said...

No Child Left Behind [sic] also makes funding conditional on allowing military recruiters in public high schools.

andy said...

Yeah NCLB is trash. Under-funded. Obamarama says he will fund it. But now the states, at least this one, are holding the fed money for education. I vote to eliminate the entire state assembly and senate. There is our budget shortfall right there and then some with all their staffers, cars, health care, perks, travel, offices and expense accounts. For what? We are set to vote on shit they should have decided on their own. But they couldn't. So fire em all. Or let them announce yankees games. Same standards.

L-girl said...

Thanks Don!

andy said...

Ok ok ok. Eck is kinda dumb and annoying. Alright. Happy everyone? I did enjoy him calling the yankees catcher a piece of shit and all the other shit he said that game. Now he is just diluted.

L-girl said...

"Another big part of the problem with education in the USA today is the decline in standards"

I was trying to type this before and went on for so long that I deleted it. So thanks!

A huge number of problems in the US are attributable, at least in part, to the terrible state of public education. Certainly makes it easier for certain interests.

In 27 years of teaching law students, I have seen an incredible decline in writing skills. Grammar, punctuation, spelling, clarity of expression, etc.----all just disappearing.

I refuse to use modern or current slang for the most part. But because I stuck to my proper speech I excelled in my professional life. I wasn't a nerd either. I weren't no nerd. Young people now are writing so much on the internet in the current slang and it is ruining their actual language. My faults on the internet are capitalization and punctuation. I concede that in an effort to type faster in conversational blogging and chats.

It's good. It means Harvey won't be driving home at 1 am.

Can't get away with that here though. You bastards, me included, will call you on it.

Eck it's 1-2 how are things happening so fast?

I even let my punctuation slide when chatting here. But damned if I'll ever write that way anywhere else.

But remember, people can't use what they've never learned. Most people don't learn to write anymore.

It does no good for Arod that 5 of his 8 hits are homers. That's unreal and will attributed to roids. He needs to cool it.

I used to teach math. It's really depressing that so many kids grow up to hate math. As a result, they're set up to get pwned by politicians, salesmen, bankers, investors and writers for the rest of their lives.

Here's something I love about baseball. Right now it's 2-1, 8th inning, the game is only 2 hours old, moving right along. But in an eyeblink the game could be tied and we could be here another hour in great suspense.

Not that we will, of course. But you never know.

Love this Canadian catching.
