Jon Heyman confirms WFAN's Mike Franseca's report that Jason Bay will (pending a physical) sign a contract with the Mets. An offer of around 4/65 had been mentioned previously.

It will be interesting to see the terms of the agreement. Hopefully we won't have to hear "Why don't we get players like that?" down the road.

Fine by me.

Four years, $66 million. Averages to $16.5 per season. That doesn't seem that far out of Boston's reach but maybe that money is being saved for something bigger???

FenFan: It wasn't out of our reach...but its also a lot more than Bay is worth. It was smart to let him walk, even though I loved the guy.

That smart decision was negated, however, by the inexcusable Lackey signing.

Post says 4/66 too. Also this:

"And the physical might not be a formality. There has been a lot of talk in the sport that the Red Sox were hesitant to do a long-term deal with Bay because they were concerned about the health of his shoulders."

Good for Bay. I'm glad to see him get that kind of money (somewhere else).

I hope that's right. If it's true we offered 4/60 then another 6 over 4 years wouldn't seem to be a big deal. Of course it's a lot easier for us to say "what's 6 mil" than it is for those spending the 6 mil. And I must say I thought that (the 4/60) was already pushing the limits of what he's worth. I'm just a bit concerned that we really need 1 more good steady bat.

happy 2010 all. i promise you one world series, to be delivered in approx. 10 months time.

[sidenote: it feels weird saying that, 10 months...the last WS feels so long ago, almost as if the winner was so insignificant i don't remember. oh well, it was probably a tomfoolery of overpaid businessmen, not even a baseball team. not that we're much better but hey, it doesn't appear to me that the sox are quite as bad mercenaries as MFY are. of course, that's just my biased, fan, champagne-induced opinion...i still wonder if BR is reading...

well i guess that about ends my first nonsensical rant of 2010. i promise there will be more to come. no, i guarantee it.

i guess i should close this bracket at some point. good night JOS! happy 2010!]
