Cody Ross had three of Boston's five hits, including an RBI-double in the sixth. Cook (6-7-2-3-5, 93) was outpitched by Millwood (6-4-1-3-3, 92).

The Red Sox stranded the potential tying run at second base in the seventh and eighth innings. A leadoff walk in the ninth was followed by two strikeouts and a grounder back to the mound.

Aaron Cook / Kevin Millwood

After the Red Sox wrap up their west coast road trip tonight, their remaining 24 games are against AL East teams (six contests against each of the other four teams).

After an off-day on Thursday, they start a six-game homestand against the Blue Jays and Yankees.

We should of took care of business last year by ourselves, but the Yankees did us no favors. It would be nice to have a chance those last three games to keep them from the playoffs.
