G55: Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 2

Blue Jays - 200 100 020 - 5 7 0
Red Sox - 100 000 010 - 2 5 1
The Red Sox - who batted an MLB-best .305 as a team in May - managed only five hits against R.A. Dickey (6.2-2-1-5-4, 100) and three Toronto relievers. Boston did not get its first hit until David Ortiz doubled to lead off the sixth inning.

Baltimore beat the Yankees 6-5, so the Orioles and Red Sox are once again tied for first place.

David Price (7-6-3-4-5, 114) put his teammates in a hole right away. He walked Josh Donaldson with one out in the top of the first and watched as Edwin Encarnacion crushed a two-run homer to center.

The Red Sox got back one run in the bottom half without a hit. Betts walked, went to second on Dustin Pedroia's groundout to second, took third on Xander Bogaerts's groundout to shortstop, and scored on a passed ball by Toronto catcher Josh Thole.

Devon Travis was a big part of the Blue Jays' other three runs. He reached second on Travis Shaw's two-base throwing error and eventually scored on a double play grounder. He then hit a two-run homer off Koji Uehara in the eighth.

Boston rallied in the eighth. Bogaerts walked on four pitches from Joe Biagini and Ortiz doubled to left. With two on, Hanley Ramirez grounded to short, bringing home Bogaerts. Shaw struck out. The Blue Jays brought in Roberto Osuna. Jackie Bradley popped a 1-1 pitch to third.

In the ninth, against Osuna, Marco Hernandez, pinch-hitting for Christian Vazquez, struck out. Blake Swihart singled to center. Mookie Betts flied to center. After the umpires failed to call an obvious balk on Osuna, Pedroia singled to right, moving Swihart to third. Bogaerts, at the plate as the potential tying run and with his 26-game hitting streak on the line, got ahead 3-0, then looked at a strike and fouled one off. He swung at and missed a high fastball out of the strike zone to end the game - and his hitting streak.

Bogaerts grounded to short in the first, walked in the 3rd, struck out in the 5th, walked in the 8th, and struck out in the 9th.

Ortiz hit two doubles and has 25 on the season. He is on pace to finished the season with 73 two-baggers, which would break the current MLB record of 67, set by Earl Webb of the 1931 Red Sox.

David Ortiz is on pace to have a major league-record 120 extra-base hits (Babe Ruth holds the record right now, with 119 in 1921).

NHL Sells Ad Space on World Cup Jersey

...NHL CMO Brian Jennings told Ben Fischer of the Sports Business Journal that the league has already sold some sponsorships on the shoulders of their World Cup jerseys. The eight-team NHL-run tournament will be played this September in Toronto.

But the NHL will be listening to what the fans think about the in-game ads.

"With the use of technology, you’re in a real-time dialogue that lets you know what they think and feel about it,” Jennings told Fischer.

So keep that in mind when voicing your opinion about it on social media later this Summer.

Coming soon... MLB All-Star Jerseys with sponsorships plastered on the chest or shoulders. Just wait...

Joe's gettin' upset!

Speaking to reporters before the Yankees played a game originally set for April 10 that was called off for snow, Girardi shot back at media when pressed about lineup changes:

"Who do you want me to lead off? Tell me. You guys have these questions, but you want me to lead Tex off? You want me to lead Alex off? Want me to lead Carlos off? ... I mean, Ellsbury's done a pretty good job, hasn't he? I have shaken up the lineup, haven't I? Carlos has hit second or third, or third or fourth, most of the year. It's one thing if you have one or two guys struggling and you shake the lineup up, but when you have five or six, there's not a whole lot of shaking you can do because our No. 1 hitter's doing really well when he's hitting first, our No. 3 hitter's been doing really well and he's hitting third."

New York is scoring runs at its worst rate since 1972.

It's Pride Night at Fenway Park.

That is a promotion, along with Autism Awareness Night, that I fully support the Red Sox doing.

Far, FAR better than Dog Tags for Kids Night or some other looniness...

Also, this weekend the Sox are encouraging fans to bring new, white athletic socks to the game at Fenway Park to benefit the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP), which provides medical care to Boston's homeless men, women, and children.

I'm at the game tomorrow with my younger daughter and I plan to bring two packages to donate, one from each of us. It's a small but meaningful gesture.

The Red Sox own the 2 longest hitting streaks of the season (Bradley Jr. 29, Bogaerts 26). According to Elias, this is only the 2nd time in the last 75 years 2 teammates have had a streak of 26+ games in the same season.
The only others to accomplish the feat were Toronto's Shawn Green (28 games) and Shannon Stewart (26 games) in 1999.

The Joy of Sox also provides socks for the homeless. (https://thejoyofsox.org/) In addition to having a cool name! ... No connection to me.
