G85: Rangers 8, Red Sox 2

Red Sox - 000 002 000 - 2 3 1
Rangers - 021 320 00x - 8 8 1
Doug Fister (3.2-5-6-3-3, 89) did not do well. He gave up a two-run homer to Rougned Odor in the second, a solo shot to Carlos Gomez in the third, and then walked two guys and committed a throwing error that opened the gate to three runs in the fourth. (He was seriously squeezed by the home plate umpire and those two walks should not have been walks, but whatever.)

When I bailed after four innings, the Red Sox had yet to get a hit. In the sixth, Dustin Pedroia reached on an error with two outs and Xander Bogaerts homered. That broke up the no-hit bid by Andrew Cashner (7-3-2-3-4, 110; both runs unearned) and the potential shutout. The other two hits: Hanley Ramirez followed the homer with a single and Jackie Bradley had an infield single in the seventh. (Also, Andrew Benintendi walked twice.)

Red Sox batters, during their current six-game winning streak: 53 runs (8.8/game), 85 hits, 34 walks, .346/.423/.533, .956 OPS. The pitchers have a 2.79 ERA, with 17 walks and 62 strikeouts.

And over their last nine games (8-1): .324/.407/.493 at the plate with a 2.54 team ERA.

This afternoon: The Yankees trailed the Blue Jays 5-0 in the fourth inning, rallied to take a 6-5 lead after six, then promptly blew the lead, and lost 7-6. Dellin Betances gave up the winning run when he walked four of the five batters he faced in the eighth inning. In his last five games, Betances has a line of 3-2-7-11-5. He has walked 11 of the 22 batters he has faced. ... A victory tonight will give the Red Sox a five-game lead in the East.

Andrew Benintendi was 5-for-5 with two homers and six RBIs on Tuesday night. The only other rookie to ever have a 5-for-5 (or better) game with at least two homers and six or more RBIs was Kevin Seitzer for the Royals in 1987. Seitzer went 6-for-6 with two homers and seven RBIs against the Red Sox [on August 2, 1987].
ESPN noted that Benintendi "is the 1st player to have 5 hits and 2 HR in a game on July 4 since George Crowe of the 1957 Reds". However, Crowe's Reds lost that game, 10-7, to Milwaukee.
